SPECIAL EVENTS
• BOOK SALE - The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their next
book sale on Saturday, September 1 st at 10 AM until 4 PM. There is a
large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s
books and paperbacks. All proceeds will benefit the library.
• FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL - Bring the whole family out to our family film
festival this summer. On August 3 rd , a tiger scours the Hundred Acre
Woods for his family. Popcorn will be provided. Talk to a librarian to
get a complete schedule.
• ART DISPLAY - During the month of August, the Islamic Arts Society will
display art pieces include canvas, paintings, woodwork and ceramics, all
produced by Houston based contemporary artists. IAS aims to share the
rich heritage of arts in Islam. The society organizes events to celebrate
“Islamic Arts” and promote the positive image of our community among
Houstonians. Art is a common language and binds diverse communities.
By sharing Islamic arts we hope to promote mutual understanding and
to bring the broader Houston community together.
• SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” The 2018 Summer
Reading Club is for both readers and listeners and will run from Monday,
June 4 through Saturday, August 4 th . There will be weekly storytimes,
special programs and crafts for children of all ages. This year we will
be using a point system with prizes including a book, medal and more!
• TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” Special
teenage programs include various musical events. Young adults who
complete the summer reading program will receive sunglasses, a book
and more! So this summer, join us! All programs are free. Thursdays
at 3 PM.

• VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY - Volunteer opportunities abound at
the Maud Marks Library. Volunteers are needed to help shelve, count
patrons and more. Applications will be available beginning August
13 th . Students should be in high school and must be able to commit
to two hours a week.
• ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” All adults
ages 18 and up are invited to participate in the Harris County Public
Library summer reading program. Special programs include movies
and computer classes. This year we will be using a point system with
prizes including a book, sunglasses and more. At the library, read
books in various genres and receive entries in drawings for various
gift baskets. Read books in five different genres and receive an entry
into the drawing for our grand prize of various gift certificates and a
Kindle. Come in and see what we have for you! Also, join us for our
family summer reading programs. All programs are free and everyone
is welcome, although many of the classes do require pre-registration.
• TIMELESS TRAVELERS: SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Seniors 55+ are
invited to join the library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to
Miller Outdoor Theatre for the annual Shakespeare Festival. The bus
will be departing on Tuesday, August 2 nd at 7 PM. We will be seeing
Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet. Seating is extremely limited.

• VOLUNTEERS ROCK!… COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FAIR - Volunteers
Rock! Come to the library on Saturday, August 4 th , 10 AM to 2 PM for
our fourth annual volunteer fair. Dozens of community organizations
in the Greater Katy area in need of help will be here to tell you all about
what they do to make life just a little easier for the Katy community.
You can find out all you need to know to assist others in need. Libraries
might Rock, but so do Volunteers!
• COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION - Are you ready for college? Come
Monday, August 6 th at 1:30 PM for this introductory session that will
help you to make a plan including finding the right college fit, admissions
steps, finishing a degree you started, tuition costs and paying for
college. This program is presented by University of Houston-Victoria.
• RENEWABLE ENERGY - Want to save money and help the environment
at the same time? Solar panels may be the answer you are looking
for. Join us on Monday, August 6 th at 7 PM as Sheldon Wilkinson of
Alba Energy come to talk about renewable energy resources and solar
panels. Learn what you need to do to go green!
• DIY WORKSHOP: MAKE YOUR OWN SOAP - Would you like to have
that personalized smelling soap without all the cost? On Tuesday,
