SPECIAL EVENTS<br />
• BOOK SALE - The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their next<br />
book sale on Saturday, September 1 st at 10 AM until 4 PM. There is a<br />
large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s<br />
books and paperbacks. All proceeds will benefit the library.<br />
• FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL - Bring the whole family out to our family film<br />
festival this summer. On <strong>August</strong> 3 rd , a tiger scours the Hundred Acre<br />
Woods for his family. Popcorn will be provided. Talk to a librarian to<br />
get a complete schedule.<br />
• ART DISPLAY - During the month of <strong>August</strong>, the Islamic Arts Society will<br />
display art pieces include canvas, paintings, woodwork and ceramics, all<br />
produced by Houston based contemporary artists. IAS aims to share the<br />
rich heritage of arts in Islam. The society organizes events to celebrate<br />
“Islamic Arts” and promote the positive image of our community among<br />
Houstonians. Art is a common language and binds diverse communities.<br />
By sharing Islamic arts we hope to promote mutual understanding and<br />
to bring the broader Houston community together.<br />
• SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” The <strong>2018</strong> Summer<br />
Reading Club is for both readers and listeners and will run from Monday,<br />
June 4 through Saturday, <strong>August</strong> 4 th . There will be weekly storytimes,<br />
special programs and crafts for children of all ages. This year we will<br />
be using a point system with prizes including a book, medal and more!<br />
• TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” Special<br />
teenage programs include various musical events. Young adults who<br />
complete the summer reading program will receive sunglasses, a book<br />
and more! So this summer, join us! All programs are free. Thursdays<br />
at 3 PM.<br />
Thursday, <strong>August</strong> 2 nd : Woven CD Dreamcatchers<br />
• VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY - Volunteer opportunities abound at<br />
the Maud Marks Library. Volunteers are needed to help shelve, count<br />
patrons and more. Applications will be available beginning <strong>August</strong><br />
13 th . Students should be in high school and must be able to commit<br />
to two hours a week.<br />
• ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” All adults<br />
ages 18 and up are invited to participate in the Harris County Public<br />
Library summer reading program. Special programs include movies<br />
and computer classes. This year we will be using a point system with<br />
prizes including a book, sunglasses and more. At the library, read<br />
books in various genres and receive entries in drawings for various<br />
gift baskets. Read books in five different genres and receive an entry<br />
into the drawing for our grand prize of various gift certificates and a<br />
Kindle. Come in and see what we have for you! Also, join us for our<br />
family summer reading programs. All programs are free and everyone<br />
is welcome, although many of the classes do require pre-registration.<br />
• TIMELESS TRAVELERS: SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Seniors 55+ are<br />
invited to join the library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to<br />
Miller Outdoor Theatre for the annual Shakespeare Festival. The bus<br />
will be departing on Tuesday, <strong>August</strong> 2 nd at 7 PM. We will be seeing<br />
Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet. Seating is extremely limited.<br />
Registration required.<br />
• VOLUNTEERS ROCK!… COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FAIR - Volunteers<br />
Rock! Come to the library on Saturday, <strong>August</strong> 4 th , 10 AM to 2 PM for<br />
our fourth annual volunteer fair. Dozens of community organizations<br />
in the Greater Katy area in need of help will be here to tell you all about<br />
what they do to make life just a little easier for the Katy community.<br />
You can find out all you need to know to assist others in need. Libraries<br />
might Rock, but so do Volunteers!<br />
• COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION - Are you ready for college? Come<br />
Monday, <strong>August</strong> 6 th at 1:30 PM for this introductory session that will<br />
help you to make a plan including finding the right college fit, admissions<br />
steps, finishing a degree you started, tuition costs and paying for<br />
college. This program is presented by University of Houston-Victoria.<br />
• RENEWABLE ENERGY - Want to save money and help the environment<br />
at the same time? Solar panels may be the answer you are looking<br />
for. Join us on Monday, <strong>August</strong> 6 th at 7 PM as Sheldon Wilkinson of<br />
Alba Energy come to talk about renewable energy resources and solar<br />
panels. Learn what you need to do to go green!<br />
• DIY WORKSHOP: MAKE YOUR OWN SOAP - Would you like to have<br />
that personalized smelling soap without all the cost? On Tuesday,<br />
