Rachel Mgbeike heads east to attend Yale University and intends to<br />

double major in Music and Global Health. She is thinking about becoming<br />

a cardiologist; getting her M.D. and possibly pursuing a Ph.D.<br />

Her advice to the students younger than her is “Never give up. You’re<br />

closer to your dreams than you think. Keep your head up and keep<br />

moving forward.”<br />

VALEDICTORIAN OF SAINT JOHN XXIII’S CLASS OF <strong>2018</strong><br />

Griffin Jay Alexander, a resident of Lake <strong>Forest</strong>,<br />

is the valedictorian of Saint John XXIII’s<br />

class of <strong>2018</strong>. Griffin Alexander will be the<br />

second generation to attend Notre Dame,<br />

majoring in Engineering with hopes of going<br />

on to law school. He is the son of Jay and Amy<br />

Alexander of Katy, Texas.<br />

A National Merit Commended Scholar, Griffin<br />

has been a member of the National Honor Society,<br />

Mu Alpha Theta, National Science Honor<br />

Society, National Spanish Honor Society and<br />

the International Thespian Society. He has<br />

served as an Altar Server, Head Altar Server, a<br />

Lion Ambassador and a House representative.<br />

For the last four years, Griffin has been the St.<br />

John XXIII lion mascot and a three year All American performing once in<br />

the Citrus Bowl pregame show. Griffin was a member of the ComedySportz<br />

team and president of the Young Conservatives Club. Griffin spent<br />

the summer after his junior year at Notre Dame after being accepted into<br />

their Summer Scholars Program where he studied The Contemporary<br />

Church and its Evolving Mission. Griffin has dedicated numerous hours<br />

to community service and mentoring retreats through Epiphany of the<br />

Lord Catholic Church where he is a member. Griffin’s leadership abilities<br />

are strong, as evident by his commitment to earning his Eagle Scout<br />

rank and serving on the Archdiocesan Youth Council for the Archdiocese<br />

of Galveston-Houston for four years. It is important to Griffin to take<br />

an active role in serving his community. He has served on the mission<br />

field organized a clothing drive, served the homeless and worked with<br />

Alzheimer’s disease patients. Griffin’s favorite memory at St. John XXIII<br />

was participating in the theater productions.<br />

2 ND ANNUAL GALA BENEFITING A PLACE FOR PEANUT, INC.<br />

Friday, <strong>August</strong> 17, <strong>2018</strong><br />

A Place for Peanut, Inc. will host its 2 nd Annual Gala on Friday, <strong>August</strong><br />

17, <strong>2018</strong> from 7-10 PM at Kirby Ice House located at 3333 Eastside St.<br />

Houston, 77098. A Place for Peanut is a non-profit horse sanctuary and<br />

equine therapy foundation. The organization is dedicated to rescuing<br />

horses, donkeys and miniature horses from being slaughtered; while<br />

bringing joy to children and veterans in hospitals through its special<br />

programs and therapy.<br />

Honorary Chair Michelle Maresh along with Gala Co-Chairs Christine and<br />

Steve Johnson will welcome guests to a fun-filled evening with bites<br />

and beverages along with live entertainment provided by Houston’s<br />

legendary Scott Gertner Jazz Band. Houston abstract artist Ann Marie<br />

Vancas will paint “live” a piece of artwork that will be auctioned during<br />

the evening for the organization. Casey Curry will serve as the Master of<br />

Ceremonies. Guests will have the chance to meet two miniature rescue<br />

horses from the sanctuary and place their bets in a live and silent auction.<br />
