CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Since our last meeting, our Sunday run was a local navigation run to allow members who had attended
the club night to practice their skills.
Leon had set a challenging course suitable for testing what would be required to take part in rallies set by
other branches. Everyone made at least one mistake! Some enjoyed the challenge while others felt it was
too difficult and therefore not enjoyable. We always learn something !
Our Winter Woollies Wander had good weather and feed back was very positive about the route. We did
make one error but only the “experts” went wrong there. One of our members did head for Whangerei!
Leon and Brendda Salt were the best of our branch. We look forward to next year.
Our next midweek café is on August 1 st at the Puhoi Café and Cheese Store.
Our next club night is Prize Giving. Usual format, but a group of us have proposed and set up a Take-away
Roast $13.00 all one size, choice of 3 meats. Please see the advertisement in this Newsletter. If you have
dietary constraints or just prefer to BYO, please feel free to do so and don't let this put you off attending
the meeting.
Daffodil Rally looms ever nearer. Those who are considering volunteering or joining in, please let me
know. All the information was in your last newsletter. It would be very encouraging to the committee to
see people who are not always active. It is for a good cause.
CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH
JAMES’ & GLORIA’S 1937 CHRYSLER COUPE
This car and at least 4 other identical vehicles were NZ-assembled at Todd Motors in Wellington. There is
also one other car, which was English-assembled. All 5 are restored and on the road. There is also a genuine
1937 Plymouth example as well (a recent import from Detroit and LH drive). I first saw this car on display
in Columbo Street, Christchurch back in 1973 while touring the South Island with a couple of mates.
By then I was a qualified mechanic with the first 3 years of my apprenticeship spent in Orourkes Precision
Engineering in Warkworth which was a Chrysler Agent. The car was quickly purchased, with lapsed rego
and no current WOF. It did run, but we obtained an ‘A’ frame and hooked it up behind my 1965 Cortina
GT and towed it home to Warkworth. On the steep hills we simply put one of the lads in it and fired it up.
As a matter of interest the doors on the GT still had all their proper gaps when we got back!
The old convertible was put away in a shed at Mahurangi and did not emerge until January 2003, having
been inspected by the Branch on a Sunday Shed Raid. In 2003 the car was moved into our new garage/
workshop where it was dismantled and all parts of the body were taken to “Heritage Beadblasters” in
Auckland to be blasted clean and primed. Wilbur Brown (a Branch Member and Panel-beater) came and
inspected. He took away one front guard and started the panel work. This was a continuing process for
Wilbur.
I borrowed a large trailer and took the body to the Beadblasters. The chassis I took into Tucker Panelbeaters
at Warkworth as they had a chassis alignment machine. As the original axle was bent on the RH
side I located another front axle and also a RH rear guard, both purchased second hand from the same
vendor. The chassis was then taken to Henderson for sandblasting and paint. The paint used was
Resene Log Truck chassis paint.
In the meantiime I purchased a large quantity of rubberware, an engine kit and lots of other sundry items
from the USA. When visiting our niece in Melbourne I found a shop which was an agent for “Peter Jacksons
Old Auto Rubber” where I purchased a nice set of repro running board rubbers. Steve Simpson, another
Branch member and Panelbeater, made up a new set of running boards and as I hate gluing rubber
I got “Airflo Hydraulics” in Auckland to attend to painting and gluing on the rubber for me. Laurie Roberts
was the owner of Airflo and had restored a similar car to ours. He also attended to lots of other
8

jobs as well. Laurie is a very talented man (now retired) and has restored at least 3 Ford Zephyrs. All
mechanical work was done by me, except for machine work and the setting up of the gears. The engine
was bored and sleeved back to standard and the crankshaft was reground, etc.
I purchased a complete gearbox with overdrive from a
VCC member in Whangarei. The 3 speed gearbox had a
complete new gear-set already fitted, but I had to get a
new layshaft made up and hardened for it, plus the OD
needed new shafts and rollers in the planetary gear set:
Laurie Roberts attended to that job. I also rebuilt both
the driveshaft U joints. The overdrive was not there
when I purchased the car – it just had the normal 3
speed box – but it did still have the cable to operate the
OD mounted on the dash.
On another visit to Melbourne we went to see a lovely man Ellis Barron whose business was making up
frames and glassware. He supplied these all over the world, in particular to the Hot Rod industry. He
made a superb job for us in triple plated brass. He has since passed away – a great loss to the old car industry,
Various firms were involved in the Chrome plating but we settled on Advanced Plating and Polishing
whom I found gave the best deal on price and quality of job. In the spring of 2011, Gloria and I visited
Rob Pollock in West Harbour and checked him out over wood-graining the dashboard – check out the
result for yourselves!
By this time the body, chassis and both front and rear axles, etc were reinstalled (with new shackles etc)
and the brake system was totally rebuilt, including the pipework, linings and cylinders. Wheel bearings
were replaced as necessary, as were all the diff bearings. The body is rubber mounted – 7 up each side of
the chassis and all mounts were renewed. A new battery box and lid were made up: this is under-floor
beneath the passenger’s seat. A new petrol tank was made and installed along with new pipe work.
9

Next the painter came and painted the fire-wall on the engine side, enabling me to refit the rebuilt engine
and gearbox. Then Nigel Hawkes came and took the car down to Pit Stop for the exhaust system to be
made and fitted. The car then went to Advanced Auto Refinishers in Warkworth for painting.
Once painted, Nigel took the car down
to have a new Top made, plus seats,
redone in leather etc by John McKechnie
in Auckland. At home again I then
spent considerable time installing a
N.O.S wiring loom, refitting door windows
and locks among other things.
The car is now on a 12v electrical system
which includes halogen headlamp
bulbs (60W) along with a genuine 12V
Chrysler generator from the 1950s.
Denis Martin from our Branch has adjusted charge rates, etc. Other mods include a homemade resistor
in the starter circuit and the fitting of a 10V ignition coil. I also fitted a rubber priming bulb in the fuel line
and a battery switch, both under the bonnet.
In February this year, Nigel transported the finished vehicle down to North Shore Automotive Lid, for
Vinning and WOF and we registered the car at VTNZ with our personalised plate. My first drive was down
to Duffs Tyres to check the wheel alignment and whether the 2nd hand axle was bent: fortunately it was
not! The car is on 600x16 radials, drives nicely and tracking is straight, although steering is heavy parking.
All in all a 15 year restoration!!!
MYSTERY MOTORS
What car is this? Answer in September’s Newsletter.
July’s Mystery Motor could be mistaken for a Bentley
S3 but is a one-off Alvis known as the 1967 Alvis
V8 Burns Special. Jim Burns was an Alvis enthusiast
and businessman who made his fortune producing
electric guitars. He shoe–horned a 5.4 litre 300 bhp
V8 from a Chevrolet Corvette into his elegant TD21,
lowered the roof line and redesigned the front
where the double stack of headlights had spoiled
the original elegant Graber design. Burns wanted
to produce the car for the US market but by then
Rover owned Alvis, and Rover was in turn bought
by British Leyland which had
no interest in producing a low
volume prestige car, and so
Burns’ dream died.
What a pity that was !
1953 ALVIS TA 21
After 15 years of enjoyment with our lovely Alvis it is time to say goodbye.
It has recently had the head off to be checked, valves ground and new seals fitted.
The radiator was rodded and pressure tested, the tyres are all in good condition and have
ample tread.
We have had some fabulous trips including one from North Cape to Bluff.
We are looking for $22.000 or near offer.
