Myths And Legends of Our Own Land
by: Charles M. Skinner
Charles Montgomery Skinner (15 March 1852 – 1907) was an
American writer. Skinner published collections of myths, legends
and folklore found inside the United States and across the world.
Skinner hoped that America’s progress would transform the nation’s
few legends into few but great ones – “as time goes on the figures
seen against the morning twilight of our history will rise to more commanding
stature.” He hoped to combine folklore conventions with
New England transcendentalism to keep alive traditions endangered
by the industrial age.
Skinner’s writings were wide-ranging. He was a playwright, authoring
Villon, the Vagabond. Skinner’s other interests included the
seasons, especially as they changed inside of industrializing cities.
In order to improve the urban environment, he authored a guide to
gardening and urban beautification. He also commented on turn-ofthe-century
America’s turbulent economy in Workers and the Trusts
and American Communes. His other contributions to American literature
included works of natural history such as With Feet to the Earth
and Do-Nothing Days.
Perquimans Chamber
What are you thinking of doing for lunch? I’m just
beginning to get a little hungry, but I can’t figure
out what I want. There are lots of great places to eat
that we’ve been to before, but there are a bunch of new
options right around here and I was hoping we could try
them out.
How about we run out to Albemarle Plantation? Remember
when Patricia’s closed and we were so sad?
Well, guess where the chef from Patricia’s is right now?
The Clubhouse Restaurant at AP! Craving those fried
green tomatoes you used to order at Patricia’s? You
can find them on the Clubhouse menu. But you could
also just get something simple – what do they call it? –
American Casual cuisine. Life isn’t all beef medallions
in wine (although sometimes I kind of wish it were).
Or, we could try the Dockside Café. They’re doing
Neapolitan pizza. You know, the kind they make in the
huge wood-fired oven and is so delicious it could bring
a strong man to tears? That kind. Mmmmm, basil and
garlic and mozzarella.
But there’s also Bout Thyme Kitchen that’s just opened
on Church Street in Hertford. Yes, it was in Elizabeth
City originally, at the old train station. Remember going
there on Sundays for the best fried chicken? Well,
they’re in down Hertford now and the food is just as
fantastic as ever. Can I confess something? I tried the
fried fish on Friday. I know, I know, I’ve always said that
I really don’t like fish and you told me that Bout Thyme’s
fried fish was so good that even I would like it. Well,
you are right! I tried it and it is wonderful! And the fried
cabbage. And the macaroni and cheese!
Looking Out for Your Investment?
by Harry Cannon, with Laura Bush Jenkins
Whether you own a home, take care of a property,
or strive to retain valuable tenants, your real
estate investment requires attention to earn the proper
return. Rather than waiting for mold issues to become
an expensive nuisance, you can protect your space and
control what might otherwise seem like an unforeseen
variable eating your bottom line.
If your home inspection reports mention anything
about discoloration, you need help right away. My company,
Dwelling Management Solutions, provides assessments
with prioritized recommendations. We issue
a certificate after treatment that provides a warranty,
assuming compliance with recommended action steps.
You may recall how Edenton’s historic Taylor Theater
is re-opening g after about a year of closure. I devised
a plan enabling the group’s 64 investors to stay on track
with their goal of providing the community meaningful
focal point, minus the messy aftermath of past storm
damage.
Other home improvement companies are leveraging
the value of proactive mold treatment strategies using
them to ensure consumer safety. In North Carolina,
an entity can be liable for improper application of mold
treatment. The chemicals can cause serious burns,
especially when they aren’t mixed properly.
by Colleen Brown
Have you been to El Paraizo, the new Mexican restaurant?
It’s in the same building where Isabella’s Taqueria
was, on Church Street, but is a whole new place. It’s
run by this wonderful family and the food is so good. A
lot of authentic dishes, but lots of things that you and I
love as well. I got adventurous recently and tried the
Huraches. Someone told me that it was like Mexican
pizza? But no, it’s so much more delicious. It does
have a crust with toppings on it, but the crust is made
with corn flour (I think) and it’s topped with beans and
cheese and sausage and salsa and lots of other wonderful
things. There’s also a burrito made with sausage
and on Cinquo De Mayo they had Tri-Color nachos!
It’s exciting that there’s so much good food in Perquimans
County. And those are just the new places.
Ooooo, and have you heard about the Tap Room that is
opening on Grubb Street? I can’t wait. See you there.
Over the past twenty years, I’ve seen these products
and our certified applicators can respond immediately
with an array of targeted, non-toxic compounds.
If you would like to understand how to protect your
property from airborne contaminants that may affect the
health and safety of your family or tenants, contact me
or Bruce at 252 339 2489 or email info@dwellms.com.
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
While watching a story about feral hogs in Australia, I
was struck by the poison they use for control. Their
poison of choice is sodium nitrite (NaNo2). Sodium Nitrite
is the curing agent for over 90% of cured products in the
country. I flashed back to my old inspection days. A big
part of my early food safety career was as an Inspector-in
Charge in New York City, where they had huge pastrami,
frankfurters, ham, and corned beef operations, and used
tons of sodium nitrite. So, let’s connect some dots:
Curing formulas containing sodium nitrite are limited to
parts per million, and is monitored by residual samples.
I believe curing operations require diligent oversight and
quality control. The worlds largest cured pork producer is
now China, and ”Country of Origin” labeling is no longer
law. I’m not a big history guy, but I can’t remember, nor
have a read of a law that was actually rescinded two
years after it was implemented. RED FLAG for me so I
reduced my cured meat intake and increased my fiber
when I couldn’t resist my cravings. I tried some of that
uncured bacon, and I even compared it the regular stuff,
and couldn’t tell the difference. Can’t wait to try the other
uncured stuff.
I was stunned by the amount of national and regional
recalls and Epidemiology investigations, so I had to
devote some space to it. The USDA (FSIS), and CDC
released press releases, regarding a nationwide anti-biotic
resistant salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey.
A nationwide outbreak is serious stuff particularly when
you have the CDC and FSIS both working on it. There
hasn’t been a voluntary recall. No main manufacturer or
distributer has been identified, the outbreak has been
linked to various brands and products, including pet food.
The USDA suggests turkey products be fully cooked,
and equipment be cleaned and sanitized. It says that in
the “safe handling instructions” on the label. The CDC
also reported that hundreds of folks in the Midwest were
sickened by parasites found in vegetable trays sold under
the Del Monte brand.
These are quality control issues. Both are a result of
missed Critical Control Points. There should be zero
tolerance for food poisoning pathogens such as E-coli,
salmonella, Listeria, etc.
Finally, I hear talk about how young people are adamant
in their rejection of getting into America’s food supply
chain that’s going to be underpinned by a $900 billion
dollar farm budget. To put that number in perspective,
the entire Russian economy is about a $100 billion dollars
more. Agriculture is a sustainable gold mine. Our State
was created for it’s agriculture richness. It’s time to develop
it. I’ll expand on that next time.
You are what you eat.
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
by Jim KAIGHN, CLU,CHFC,RHU,AABA, BSBA,LUTCF
Radio and T.V Experts??
One thing that irritates me more than anything is that
someone who claims to be be an expert on economic
matters on the radio or television shows, gives their stupid
advice as if they do this work everyday and has years of
experience in doing it..I listen to some local radio programs
over the weekend and most of them give sound advice
concerning matters off economics and mostly LIFE INSUR-
ANCE advise.. These people do not show their ignorance on
these matters..They offer sound advice on all types without
pontificating one way is better than the another, or one type
is bad and one type is good.. BUT, some nationally know
blowhards give the worse advice by preaching one type is
superior over the another.. that WHOLE LIFE insurance is a
waste and only buy TERM INSURANCE..Others say whole
Life is a lousy investment..
Well, quickly Whole Life insurance, the correct kind, can
build up CASH RESERVES that are guaranteed to grow
every year, no matter what the stock market or the economy
does because it is not tied to the these markets, or the S&P
500 or other indexes.. they are GUARANTEED within the life
insurance contract themselves.. Also, most reliable companies
also pay out extra money to policy holders in the form
or DIVIDENDS, which is tied to the company”s growth..
Though not guaranteed, almost all company’s that do this
have done it for around 100 years or more..It is a great way
for people to grow wealth over the years, TAX FREE and
have a personal fund they can draw from without worrying
about the economy or how the stock market is doing..TERM
LIFE is a simple alternative to trying to buy much whole life,
which they could never afford, to cover a mortgage
or family coverage while the children are young.. These
so called experts want you to put your money in the stock
market and maybe risk losing 25% or 50% of your money
when the market crashes. These financial experts want you
to give them your money to manage so they can keep getting
commissions off of you even if YOU LOSE MONEY for
you, they keep getting their fair share.. Most working people
have a hard time saving and they depend on their employer
to help them through a 401K plan or other savings accounts
they offer.. But, no one there are experts on how you are
suppose to manage these accounts.. MY suggestions have
always been, if you can not afford to lose money around
retirement time, do not put your money in risky places..Also,
I try to show a balanced portfolio of LIFE INSURANCE ideas
with both TERM and WHOLE LIFE.. But these radio and
TV experts say only one way or the other.. they are cheating
you on sound advice to make an informed decision on
which way to go.. ALWAYS,ALWAYS, consult an INSUR-
ANCE EXPERT on matters of life insurance, like you consult
a doctor on matters of health, not someone who is a guest
on some talk show..THINK PEOPLE, USE YOUR BRAIN..
IT is YOUR MONEY!!-- For more info on this or other money
matters, you can contact me at 252 202 5983 or 252 335
5983, or by e-mail at “insdr@roadrunner.com”..Until next
month-HAPPY TRAILS.
Dear Dr. Crime: Our public debt is so high, why should
we spend money “rehabilitating” criminal offenders? It
doesn’t make them less a crook does it?
Dear Reader. Research has not shown that locking
them up (incarceration), does much to reduce more
crime when the crooks get out. In our country 68% of
state prisoners released in 2015 were rearrested within
3 years. And as far as cost is concerned, the annual
cost of judicial expenses is 265 billion dollars. I sure
would like to spend that on something else. I have
argued the cost goes much higher when we look at the
impacts beyond the crook and victim. Families are hurt,
and that is likely an awful figure. I ran a prison for
young boys and saw the failures. But, research has
shown that the economic impact is in our favor when
treatment programs are used to change the offender.
The impacts of that positive change spread just as bad
effects do, so we avoid having more victims as well as
saving a lot of money. A recent review of the wide range
of positive effects, money as well as human betterment,
shows this is true. That significant and powerful review
of research tells us we should do more to study what
works and do that!!
Dear Dr. Crime: What is the general opinion about abortion
being legal? Girl
Dear Girl: The Pew Research Center reports more believe
it should be legal than believe it should be illegal.
Dear Dr. Crime: Do many people believe in God? Pastor
Dear Pastor: The Pew Research Center reports that
90% of Americans believe in a higher power. However,
only a small majority believe in God as described in the
Bible. Research shows that more involvement in religion
would impact our crime rate.
Dear Fellow. A report for 2017 from Cal. State U.
showed the rate for hate crimes is up while other crimes
are down. The FBI reported that in 2016 the groups victimized
included African-Americans, lesbians, gays and
bisexuals, Whites, Jews, Latinos, and Muslims. Race
continued to be the most common category, comprising
57 percent of all hate crimes. African-Americans were at
their lowest proportion of all hate crimes since 1992.
Dear Dr. Crime: My friend told me over coffee about an
incest matter in her family. What do I do? Scared a Lot
Dear Lot: In dealing with offenders for years, and still
today, I know of no crime more awful and causing more
confusion than incest. It is a crime, make no mistake,
and it generally carries a minimum sentence of imprisonment
of 25 years. If the victim is under age 12 it can
be life without parole. I presently work with attorneys in
child custody cases, and see it today in our courts. Do
not keep your mouth shut, but speak with the county Department
of Social Services first. Then you will probably
go to law enforcement.
Dear Dr. Crime: You don’t have your head screwed on
right! I keep seeing you taking the position against girls
and boys being basically different, in thinking, acting,
and every way. I know girls can’t compete against me or
other males. Strong Guy
Dear Guy: Your position and mislead beliefs are ancient.
When Jesus was alive, women could not be witnesses,
as they were considered unreliable and incompetent.
While not to that extent the same type of beliefs continues
to today. I was pleased to see the journal Science
(Volume 346) review the neuroscience research on
comparison of male and female brains. Research does
not back up the assumptions of different types / structure
of male female brains. Rather, differential treatment
creates experiences that influence brain development.
Even some research has been biased and misleading.
The argument with which I can agree is that we need
more research with clearly identified variables and relate
that truth to social policy. We will return to this issue.
Chowanoke History
British colonization advanced in America using principles
that aligned with those of the Portuguese and
Spaniards, which were principles based on papal decree.
The doctrines of discovery and Christian conquest were
used to justify possession of the “new” land in America.
While the British were not as brutal as the Spanish had
been in their treatment of the Natives, their imprints had
far dire consequences that are still felt centuries later.
British rationale sparked debate by those who did not
agree with the “unlawful taking” of “Heathen” land against
the Native’s will. One opponent wrote that it was “shameless
to claim for oneself by right of discovery what is held
by another, even though the occupant may be wicked,
may hold wrong views about God, or may be dull of wit.” 1
Conversely, there were proponents who held views that
Natives did not have rights to property. Robert Gray, a
minister in Virginia was one such proponent who wrote in
1609: “In Virginia the people are savage and incredibly
rude, they worship the divell, offer their young children
in sacrifice unto him, wander up and downe like beastes,
and in manners and conditions, differ very little from
beastes, having no Arte, nor science, nor trade, to imploy
themselves. These Savages have no particular propriety
in any part or parcel of that Countrey, but only a general
residence there, as wild beasts have in the forest so that
if the whole land be taken from them, there is not a man
that can complaine of any particular wrong done unto
him.”2
Gray’s comments were in stark contrast to those made
by many earlier Europeans who recalled different encounters
that they had with the Natives. Such contrasting
differences signaled changes that had taken place in the
attitudes that Europeans once held towards Native Americans,
now that they no longer needed them for survival.
Just a hundred years prior, initial interactions between
the English and the Roanoke colony of North Carolina in
1506 reflected a totally different assessment; “Wingina
(the Chief) welcomed the visitors, and the Indians gave
freely of their supplies to the English, who had lost most
of their own when the Tyger (the ship) grounded. By the
time the colonists were settled, it was too late to plant
corn, and they seem to have been helpless when it came
to living off the land. They did not know the herbs and
roots and berries of the country. They could not or would
not catch fish in any quantity, because they did not know
how to make weirs. And when the Indian showed them,
they were slow learners; they were unable even to repair
those that the Indians made for them. Nor did they show
any disposition for agriculture. Hariot admired the yields
that the Indians got in growing maize; but the English, for
lack of seed, lack of skill, or lack of will, grew nothing for
themselves, even when the new planting season came
around again. Superior English technology appeared, for
the moment at least, to be no technology at all, as far as
food production was concerned.”3
However as fate would have it, Native populations along
the Eastern shores of North America declined, allowing
European culture and population to advance and flourish.
As the American British colonizers began to assert their
independence from Great Britain and to assert a level of
arrogance over Native peoples, the byproducts of this
assertion began to effect the political atmosphere in North
America.
Summer Is All About Water
by Claude Milot
The arrival of summer is a signal to head for the water, and northeastern
North Carolina has something for everyone. The pristine
beaches of the Outer Banks, of course, bring visitors from just about
everywhere. There’s no better way to cool off on a hot afternoon than
a quick dive into a cresting wave off Coquina Beach, followed by a
cool drink and a soak in the sun.
Sponsored by Dwelling
Management Solutions
For so many others it’s the blue waters of Albemarle Sound that
beckon. Early June saw sailboats in four racing classes gather for the
10th annual ASSA Osprey Challenge Regatta on the open waters of
the Sound off the mouth Yeopim River. The regatta, sponsored by Albemarle
Plantation’s Osprey Yacht Club, was preceded by a welcome
party for the visiting yacht clubs and followed by an awards celebration
with dinner, music, and cheers for the arrival of summer.
Albemarle Plantation’s marina, which is open to the public, had
many more visitors in June, including a flotilla of 20 sailboats from the
Neuse Sailing Association based in Oriental. They were “Loopers” on
their first leg of a tour of Albemarle Sound (“Loopers” refers to boats
doing the Albemarle Loop, that is, visiting the marinas and towns on
the Sound).
The original idea for the Albemarle Loop was conceived by Albemarle
Plantation’s Jack Atwell and OYC commodore Steve Harris to
invite boaters on their seasonal migrations up and down the Intercoastal
Waterway to discover towns like Edenton, Plymouth, Columbia,
Manteo, Hertford, and Elizabeth City. But, it’s not only the ICW
migrants who are discovering the museums, shops, restaurants, festivals,
and historical sites in these towns. The members of the Neuse
Sailing Association enjoyed their two days at Albemarle Plantation
so much, many of them, after visiting Edenton, returned for a round
of golf or another dip in the pool, and fine dining at the Clubhouse
restaurant—all available to visiting Loopers.
An idea is always a generalization,
and generalization is a property of
thinking. To generalize means to
think.
Raymond’s Creek
T
he Raymon’s Creek subdivision, situated in Camden,
NC, near the village of Shiloh, is less than 45 minutes
south of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, and 45
minutes west of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Its location
provides convenient access to Virginia’s three largest
cities - Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake. To the
east, Currituck County’s H2OBX waterpark, the Dare
County beaches, and numerous wildlife refuges are easily
accessible for day trips.
The development abuts the expansive Raymon’s Creek
estuary and the Pasquotank River. The Raymon’s Creek
Homeowner’s Association community park and pier,
overlooks Albemarle Sound, and is suitable for wading,
swimming, and boating. Woods and waters surrounding
the neighborhood provide abundant opportunities for
fishing, birdwatching, hiking, kayaking, or simply basking
in solitude.
Two of the remaining lots abut the Raymon’s Creek estuary,
and all lots have deeded access to the Pasquotank
River via the homeowners’ association common area. All
lots connect to the county’s water system, and impact
fees have been paid for most sites. Dominion Power provides
underground electric service, and all lots have been
pre-tested for septic systems.
For individuals desiring more than a lot, an adjacent
eight-acres tract is available, offering views of the
Raymon’s Creek estuary and the Pasquotank River. An
outbuilding sits on the cleared portion of the tract, and a
newly constructed creekside pier provides safe harbor for
boats.
For more information, visit www.raymonscreek.com, or
call George Jackson, Developer/Broker.
Phase One of the subdivision, comprised of 12 lots, was
created in the early 1990s. All of the original lots have
been sold, and, ten families now reside in the neighborhood.
In 2015, the adjacent 13 acres were divided into
five wooded/partially-cleared lots ranging in size from
1.5 acres to 5 acres. Prices begin at $44,000. One lot in
Phase Two has been sold, and site work is underway for
a new custom home, being offered by Kyro Builders, LLC.
Scuppernong Grapes
By Jimmy Fleming mrflemz@embarqmail.com
One of my fondest memories of growing up in Tyrrell County
was my grandparent’s old white grape vine. It was such a
great place to play and get in the shade on a hot summers day
… as well as providing some of the best grapes I ever tasted.
When the white grapes or Scuppernongs ripened in late summer
it was a sweet time for us kids. We would stand under the grape
vine (most older vines were trellised with posts and a simple
framework to keep the vines overhead) and pick til our hearts
were content. Granddaddy picked grapes for another reason. He
would make about 10 gallons of home made white grape wine
which he kept in two five gallon jimmy johns in the smokehouse.
The Scuppernong Grape was named for the Scuppernong River
of Tyrrell and Washington counties and has been propagated
for about 400 years. The oldest cultivated grapevine in the world
is the Scuppernong “Mother Vine” growing on Roanoke Island
in Dare County. The early explorers of North Carolina were
amazed at the number of grape vines growing wild and wrote of
them in their log books. The Scuppernong grapes are delicious
to eat fresh, as well as for making wonderful jams, jellies, pies,
juices, and wines. Along with being the first grape cultivated in
the United States, the Scuppernong grape was given the distinct
honor of being named the official fruit of North Carolina in 2001.
This grape has a long and storied history but most of all it just
tastes good. When you hear that the white grapes are ripe get
out and pick you a mess or find a local grower that’s selling them
and enjoy some of NC’s state fruit.
When teams normally visit nursing homes, they visit
the general population and see as many patients as
possible. Hospice visits will be focused on the individual
patients and more time will be spent with them.
The addition of this service is in keeping with the Pet
Partners mission to “improve health and well-being
through the human-animal bond.” The organization
encourages local chapters to include hospice as one of
their focuses. Information provided by the organization
says hospice patients “report improvements in mood, as
well as a decrease in depression and loneliness.”
Additionally, “the presence of therapy animals can
bring a sense of normalcy to both the patient and their
family members during a difficult time.”
Four therapy teams currently visit nursing homes,
libraries and special needs groups in Perquimans,
Pasquotank and Camden Counties. We only have dogs
certified for therapy work but Pet Partners also certifies
cats, birds, alpacas, small horses and guinea pigs.
complete an obedience training program. All animals
must be current on vaccinations and be screened by
their local veterinarian before they are evaluated by
a Pet Partners licensed team evaluator. If the animal
passes this evaluation, it is approved to begin working in
the local area.
The next meeting of Pet Partners is August 21, 6-7
pm, at the Pasquotank County Public Library, 100 E. Colonial
Ave. Anyone interested in training their animal for
therapy work is invited to attend. For further information,
lizabeth City Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers
to help with everything from working in
our store to rehabbing, repairing and building homes
for qualified buyers in Pasquotank County. We are
trying to compile a list of people who can help with
building projects we anticipate working on in the
next few months.
These projects include completion of a home
rehab project and repairs on a home for a local
veteran. We need people who can help with installation
of cabinets and interior trim, build porches
and wheelchair ramps, paint, pour concrete, grind
a tree stump and other general labor on worksites.
Experience is not required because we will provide
instruction for willing volunteers.
Not able to work on a site but still interested in
helping? We need people to prepare lunches for volunteers
and contact local businesses for donations.
This is a great project for a club or church group
looking for volunteer opportunities in the area.
The Habitat family selection model requires many
different volunteers to evaluate applications, visit the
homes to verify the family’s need for a house, and
mentor new families once they move in. People with
social work backgrounds are ideal to help with these
tasks.
Our board needs people with different skills as
well: research and write grant proposals, recruit
local businesses to support different projects, and
organize fundraising events.
items, contact Mariah Andrade, andrademariah8@
by Frank Elfring
Well we are now supposedly entering the dog days of
summer. Hope it is a little drier than the monsoons of
July. Here at Encore we are finishing up a very successful
run of our dinner theater – Ghost of Mystery Manor. We are
now entering auditions and rehearsals for our next dinner
theater Musical Miscasts. If there has ever been a song from
a musical that you wanted to desperately sing but were barred
from singing it because of age, race, gender, vocal range or
even stature this is something you might want to audition for.
We are scheduling the production for the last weekend in September
and first weekend in October. If you want to be sure
to get information about the audition or the actual production
send an email to President@encore.org.
We also went out to the Coast Guard base to participate
in their Welcome Aboard Day. This is the Coast Guard and
When I first met Jim, he gave a firm
the years he has done nothing to
change that opinion of him. He told
me he is a veteran of the United
What is a CG Auxillary vessel safety check?
The vessel safety check (VSC) is a great
way to ensure that you and your guests on your
boat have fun and safe boating experience.
The VSC is performed by a certified CG Auxillary
member at no cost to the vessel owner. It typically
takes about 30 minutes. Upon successful
completion a safety check decal is placed on the
vessel. This decal indicates to the Coast Guard
or other law enforcement agency that the vessel
was in full compliance with all federal and state
boating laws for that year.
Requirements of vessels will vary depending on
size, use and engine type. VSC’s can also be
performed on personal water craft and paddle
craft.
Some of the items checked may include.
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY: STOP ADDICTION NOW FESTIVAL
Have you or someone you care about been affected by addiction?
Are you concerned about the epidemic that is taking so many
lives in our area? If so, please come join us and be a part of the
change! We will bring the region together to learn more about Substance
Use Disorder, what resources are available for treatment, how
to live a full and sober life, and what we can all do to prevent further
addiction. We hope to draw in people from surrounding counties to
enjoy some fabulous music and food while exploring the many booths
we will have and listening to short talks on the subject from those
committed to stopping this epidemic.
This festival will happen on the lawn of the Museum of the Albemarle
on September 15, 2018. There will be a 5K at 9am, and from 10am
to 2 pm, we will have speakers, music, food, and interactive/informational
booths.
Bobby Plough will MC the event and will perform with his band,
Bobby Plough and the Lost Gringos. We are fortunate to also have
Little Dickie and the Misfits and Drunken Confessions who both have
performed at every festival we have had so far!
The event will include booths with resources for individuals and families
needing treatment, tools and ideas for living a full life in sobriety
for those in recovery who are rebuilding their lives, and education and
resources to help prevent addiction.
Evie’s Question
Last Fall, a thoughtful five-year-old little girl stood on
the north shore of the Albemarle Sound.
The wind was picking up and white-caps crowded the
shore. Gray, rain-laden clouds scudded across the
sky.
“Grandpa,” she turned to the man who’d been clutching
her little hand, “Why isn’t the water blue today?
Does the water reflect the sky?”
What an intelligent feat of thought, the grandfather
chuckled to himself. Gently, he offered a different
view.
“It’s the Sun, sweetie. When the Sun shines through
the sea and the sky, it wakes up both and they turn
blue to say hello to the light.”
“So, Grandpa, since the Sun is behind the clouds, the
water and the sky are both gray? And sad?”
“It’s okay for the sky and the sea to be gray. It means
that there’s rain for our flowers back home.”
The little girl, Evie, pondered, her finger to her chin.
Her eyes widened as a bright thought passed from
heart to her lips: “Then the sky and the water are
friends. Because the Sun makes them both blue, and
the rain makes them gray.”
“And, Evie, everything is okay. We need the sunshine,
and the rain. God takes care of us.”
“Yes Grandpa. When it’s blue, and when it’s gray. It’s
okay.”
And with that, they walked back hand in hand, up the
lane from the Albemarle Sound, and got back inside,
right before the rain
Find Your Dream Wedding
Destination
A Dream Wedding Becomes a Reality
by Laura Bush Jenkins
Planning a wedding can be a stressful endeavor. But when Amy
Lewis and her fiancé Josh Baldwin were looking for an elegant waterfront
setting to host their wedding, they found exactly what they
were looking for close to home.
Amy, a nurse in Ahoskie, initially considered a traditional setting in
downtown Edenton, but realized a large venue in a central location
would best accommodate out-of-town guests.
Several of her friends were married at Albemarle Plantation, a
waterfront golf course community in Hertford. Her parents attended
a reception there and recommended it after enjoying the venue and
food.
“We had an idea of what we wanted but the Plantation had a list of
helpful options,” Amy recalled.
She appreciated how the venue was “all-inclusive” without much
work to do on her part. The couple selected their cake artist, florist,
photographer, videographer, and entertainment while the Plantation
did the rest.
“Finding vendors on your own would have been very stressful,”
Amy mentioned.
Her mother, Cindy, was also pleased with Albemarle Plantation.
Main Dining Room Seats: 96
Upstairs Room Seats: 80
Outdoor Wedding Accommodates : 300+
Steak Medallions, Prime Rib.
“The Plantation was wonderful to work with and provided us with
the best of everything. We would not change a thing if we had to
do it all over again,” she said.
On the morning of her wedding, Amy and her seven bridesmaids
gathered above the Clubhouse to enjoy muffins, mimosas, and fruit
plates. Meanwhile, the groom and groomsmen relaxed near the
marina in a rented condo. They had options available to enjoy golf
for the afternoon.
That evening, beef medallions and chicken marsala were a
delicious hit among the 275 guests. Although buffet options were
available, the wait staff served each guest so the meal was properly
portioned and everyone had enough to eat.
Who Will Act for You if You Can’t?
Power of Attorney – Understanding the Basics
got a call yesterday that made me think writing about
I powers of attorney would be a good topic for this
month. A power of attorney is one of the most important
tools to have in your estate plan.
First, let’s define a Durable General Power of Attorney.
This is a legal document where you (the principal) give
authority to another person or entity (the agent), whether
family member, friend, or bank, to act on your behalf (to
make financial decisions) should you become disabled,
incapacitated, or need their help. Generally, this power
of attorney deals with your financial affairs, such as bill
paying and investment management, if an accident,
illness, or diminished capacity leaves you unable (or unwilling)
to handle your own affairs. By creating a power
of attorney, you are not giving up anything – you are still
in control. You can still act on your own behalf and you
can “fire” the agent whenever you want for any reason.
However, if you need help, the agent can step in and
manage your financial affairs for you. The agent may
have broad or very limited authority to deal with your
(the principal’s) assets. The power of attorney is durable
because the agent’s powers are not affected should the
principal become incapacitated or incompetent in the
future.
A durable power of attorney is particularly important
should the principal suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s
disease. Remember, to effectively execute a durable
power of attorney, the principal must be mentally
competent. So, if your loved one has the early signs of
dementia, don’t wait! If you do not have a durable power
of attorney and become incapacitated, your relatives will
have no choice but to go to court. Your family members
will have to have you declared incompetent. This is
called a guardianship proceeding. Compared to a power
of attorney, incompetency hearings and guardianships
are expensive, unpleasant, and most of the time do not
have the results that you would have wanted if you had
Mere goodness can achieve
little against the power of
nature.
By: Stella Knight
made the decisions ahead of time yourself.
A health care power of attorney is a different document
that gives the person you designate as your health care
agent broad powers to make health care decisions for
you, including the power to consent to your doctor not
giving treatment or stopping treatment necessary to keep
you alive. This power exists only for those health care
decisions for which you are unable to give informed consent.
Again, so long as you can make your own health
care decisions, you continue to do so.
I recommend that everyone, regardless of age or financial
position, consider executing both a durable general
power of attorney and health care power of attorney.
Yes, even if all your financial assets are in joint names
(you and your spouse or you and your child), these documents
are important. Joint ownership is not a substitute
for executing these powers of attorney.
I often get calls from family members because they are
unable to talk with their loved one’s insurance company,
retirement benefits’ manager, or file their loved one’s
tax returns, or to sell the jointly-owned automobile. Yes,
those are real problems. Don’t wait until there is a crisis
to plan or talk with someone about powers of attorney.
As they say: “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.”
The information contained in this column is of a general
nature and does not constitute legal advice. The characters
in this article are fictitious.
Gun Law
by Joe Forbes
This month’s article is inspired by recent events of road rage, and the care that must be taken by those who are armed with a firearm.
Most of us are busy living our daily lives. We go to work,
we go to the store, we visit with family and friends,
and maybe go to church. In that routine, we tend to see
the same people over and over, and most of them are a lot
like we are. We do not know about the significant numbers
of people living right here in our little part of the world who
have mental health issues, substance abuse issues, or are
career criminals who do not share the same ordinary values.
Add into that the occasional person who is stressed to the
point that they are triggered by some otherwise insignificant
event, and do something rash in the heat of the moment.
We don’t know about them because we don’t run into them
in our daily lives. I knew they existed, but had no idea of
just how many there are until I spent 34 years in the criminal
court system. When you factor out traffic offenses, 90% of
what I’ve seen in criminal court are the people I’ve described.
When you travel in a vehicle, you share the road
with them, and you may not even realize it until one confronts
you.
None of us are perfect drivers, and when we unintentionally
offend such a person, they begin to act in a hostile
manner. Some are content to give the middle finger salute
and go on their way. Others may act more aggressively.
In either case, you must not retaliate. You do not want to
escalate the situation. Do not show the weapon. Use your
weapon only as a last resort, and after you have done everything
in your power to avoid the confrontation in the first
place.
Do not follow them. Do not stop your car anywhere near
them. If you fear for your safety, call 911. If you have to
stop, do so only in a well-lit public place, like a police station
or a fire station. If those places are not available, go to a
supermarket or a convenience store. The video surveillance
systems in such places will be very useful in court IF you
did everything you could to avoid a confrontation, let alone
violence. Banks also tend to have good video systems, as
well as Walmarts. Do not go into a residential neighborhood
or down a country road. The presence of large groups
of people may intimidate the aggressor from stopping. If
he does stop, their presence may prevent him from doing
anything violent or threatening. Attract attention by turning
on your emergency flashers and blowing your horn. Park
so that you cannot be blocked in. You always want to have
the option of leaving. Lock your doors, and do not get out of
the vehicle until the aggressor has left. The aggressor may
kick or beat on your vehicle, but that alone does not warrant
the use of a firearm. If the person follows you, DO NOT GO
HOME! The last thing you want is for the aggressor to know
where you live. Avoid going to your job as well. Again,
you don’t want this person to know anything about you if
possible.
Dash cameras have become relatively inexpensive, and I
recommend investing in one and leaving it on all the time.
Typically, they record on a limited memory, which records
over itself after a few days. In the event of an incident, and
after the incident is over, shut it off so it won’t record over
itself and give it to the police. The video will document what
happened. It may also give you the aggressor’s license
number. In the event that a face-to-face confrontation
occurs, set your cell phone to video mode. Even if you
cannot record the video of the event, you will at least have
the audio.
Deadly force is a LAST resort, to be used only when you
are in fear of imminent serious bodily injury or death, and
when you are not the aggressor. Be prepared to prove that
you did everything possible to avoid it.
Maps are very important in our everyday life.
Whether we use them because our GPS tells
us we are floating in a sea of blue or you happen
to have an old Atlas in the glove compartment that
keeps falling out when you open it. Maps are also
very important to museums. We use maps to tell
us what used to be where, who used to own what,
and maybe, just maybe what type of big fish live in
the ocean.
The Museum of the Albemarle holds just a few
maps in its collections, mostly because we collect
three-dimensional artifacts. The few that we do
hold are quite interesting. MOA holds the 1893
PLAN OF ELIZABETH CITY, a map by engineer H.
T. Greenleaf designating the railroad, wards, and
lots of the city. For the museum’s 20th anniversary,
the NC Museum of History Associates presented
MOA with Theodor de Bry’s 1590 “VIRGINIA.” The
engraving is based on John White’s 1585 drawing.
We keep this one in our vault but we do have
a copy on display. MOA also is the repository of
several Sanborn maps, which were drawn to assist
fire insurance companies from 1867-1977.
Everyone can access a great source of maps at
your fingertips. North Carolina Maps (https://web.
lib.unc.edu/nc-maps/) contains over 3,000 maps
that have been digitized from the collections at the
North Carolina State Archives, the Outer Banks
History Center, and the North Carolina Collection
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Their earliest maps date to the late 1500s.
“North Carolina Maps is made possible by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services under the
provisions of the Library Services and Technology
Act as administered by the State Library of North
Carolina.”
Dr. Bald and Associates
“Thank you for calling Dr. Bald & Associates. This is
Julie, how can I help you?” or “Dr. Bald’s office; this is
Mandy speaking. How can I help you?” Or “Dr. Bald’s
Office, this is DeAnna, how can I help you?” will be your
greeting when you call to schedule an appointment with
Dr. Bald.
Since 1990 Dr. Bald has been providing excellent oral
surgery care for people in the Albemarle Region. Our
Elizabeth City location is at 1134 N. Road Street, Building
7, near the hospital.
We also have an office in Nags Head at 2224 S. Croatan
Hwy, Suite 7, at Milepost 10 on the Sound side of
the road in front of the bowling alley, where we currently
do surgeries on Thursdays. We offer Saturday appointments
in our Elizabeth City office. At both locations we
extract teeth AND place implants, do biopsies, treat
broken jaw bones, and many other services.
When you call, we will ask you questions about what
needs to be done. What tooth number(s) or where the
tooth/teeth are located will help us as we prepare for
your surgery. We accept referrals but a referral is not
required. If you have an x-ray of your tooth/teeth from
another dentist in the past six months we will discount
your charges and give you a free full mouth x-ray.
Another question we will ask is whether you want to
have local numbing done to remove the tooth/teeth or if
you want to be “put to sleep.”
Please call us for your oral surgery needs at 252-338-
Jake’s Outdoor Adventures
I
t is August and for me that means I am headed back to NC State
University to start my junior year. Because I will be in class, I am
going to miss one of the great fisheries that heats up around August
and sometimes lasts to late-September. That would be fishing for
White Marlin. Here on the OBX, the White Marlin bite can be one of the
most exciting and fruitful seasons we have. Of course, the presence of
tropical storms or the dreaded hurricane can alter or kill the bite totally.
Assuming we have no weather events, this is the time to charter a
boat to target these class of Billfish. It is a beautiful sight to ride by
Pirates Cove or Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and see all those White
Marlin Release Flags hanging from the charter boats’ outriggers.
The weather, sea currents, temperature breaks, and presence of
baitfish will determine how good the white marlin season will be. There
have been some seasons where the bite was so hot, Oregon Inlet
FIshing Center reported their boats releasing in the area of 300 White
Marlin per day! There are many great billfish captains who charter right
here in the Outer Banks. If you are here on vacation, call the fishing
centers and see if the bite is hot and if they have a open boat for charter.
If the bite is on and a boat is available, cancel whatever you have
planned and go White Marlin Fishing. I promise you that if you experience
this fishery in its prime form you will be marking your calendar
every year to make this trek to the OBX to experience it again.
by Jake Worthington
Imagine having a nice White Marlin to hang in your office or home to
remind you of the great day you had on the Gulfstream!
Also before you leave the fishing center after your day on the water,
tell your captain you want to fill out the North Carolina Fishing Citation
Form. They will tell you what to do and make sure you get the form
filled out correctly. You will be given a copy of the form to keep and
make sure you put it in a safe place. Most of these citations are printed
out at the first of the year and if you have not gotten it by May, you
will need to call the NCDMF and get them to check the status of your
citation. When your citation arrives, you can frame it and maybe hang it
under your trophy mount.
Adventures go to
https://www.facebook.com/
jakesoutdooradventuresnc
If you have a great trip and are lucky to release a White Marlin, think
about having one of your catches mounted. In today’s taxidermy industry,
you no longer have to kill the fish to have a mount made. Just let
your captain know you want to do this and he will have the first mate
take a measurement of the length of the White Marlin and maybe even
snap a quick picture in the water. He will then use these measurements
to order your mount and the fish is released to be caught another day.
he Frisco Native American Museum & Natural
History Center recently welcomed a new staff
member. Barbara Miller assumed her duties as
Director of Education and Public Relations at the
museum in June.
As a former volunteer, Miller has been involved
with the museum for a number of years and is
familiar with on-going programs and goals for
the future. Her native heritage gives her a clear
perspective for museum projects while her work
with the Office of Justice Services/Bureau of Indian
Affairs in Towaoc, Colorado, gives her a broad
understanding of current Native American issues.
She has organized and managed major public
events and is already working with a committee on
plans for a Native American Music Festival at the
museum next spring. It will be the beginning of
many exciting programs planned for the future.
Miller, who left a position with the Bureau of
Reclamation in in Albuquerque, NM, for her new
role will be developing two additional exhibits at
the museum as well as leading plans to expand
outreach activities for school groups through the
use of technology. She will be building on existing
networks and bringing in new resources to provide
programs and workshops through distance
learning.
“We are pleased that Barbara is coming home“
said Executive Director, Carl Bornfriend. “She
loves the Outer Banks and is passionate about
sharing Native American heritage. We know she
has a great deal to offer and are looking forward to
the programs she will organize for our visitors.”
The museum is located on Hatteras Island and
is open Tuesday through Sunday (Monday by appointment
Ceramics Show To Open At Dare County Arts Council In September
essels, sculptures, and wall-mounted work will be featured in Dare
County Arts Council’s Ceramic Show, which opens in their Vault
Gallery Room in September.
The Ceramic Show is being curated by sculptor and installation artist
Gabrielle Graber. In 2017, she graduated with her MFA from NYSCC at
Alfred University and is currently living in North Carolina as a resident
artist at Pocosin Arts. Her practice is an ongoing investigation of being a
body in the world where layers of experience and interactions collide into
material form.
“Clay allows us to experience the essence of a gesture,” said curator
and artist Gabrielle Graber. “Whether that gesture be from a functional or
sculptural perspective, a piece moves from a malleable arrangement of
molecules to a rigid record of the history of its movement. By selecting a
variety of ceramic artwork created by local and regional ceramic artists, I
hope to showcase this creative act in a space where individual aesthetics
can coexist.”
Artists wishing to participate in this special exhibit can find a prospectus
online at DareArts.org/ceramicshow and at the DCAC Gallery located in
downtown Manteo.
The show is open to all artists working with ceramics as their primary
medium that are over 18 years of age. All entries must be original and
executed within the last five years. Deadline for application is August 1.
Selection and notification of participating artists will be announced by
August 15.
Selected entries will be eligible for Best In Show, Excellence, and Honorable
Mention awards, which will be announced at the show’s opening
reception.
On Friday, September 7 an opening reception will be held for the
Ceramic Show at 6pm. The opening reception will take place during
Manteo’s First Friday celebrations and will feature snacks, drinks and live
music by Sandbar Blues. The reception is free and open to the public.
The show will remain on display through Tuesday, October 2.
Those interested in learning more about ceramics can take Gabrielle
Graber’s three day clay workshop “Abstracting Reality: Figures & Objects
Clay” at Dare County Arts Council July 26-28. Workshop participants will
learn the basic of modeling, carving, pinching, and coiling and will create
compelling sculptural objects inspired by everyday interactions.
For more information about the Ceramic Show or clay workshop, please
visit DareArts.org or call (252) 473-5558.
Celebrate Summer With A Southern Casserole
I
t’s summertime and I have the luxury of being able to walk outside to my
garden and pick my meals. Today, I’m picking eggplant and making Mama
Hawthorne’s Eggplant Casserole.
it's an experience.
By Rosie Hawthorne
You’ve never heard of the phrase “Northern hospitality,” but “Southern hospitality”
is ingrained in us. And that includes the hospitality of casseroles – a Southern
casserole. That means a casserole with large quantities of butter, cheese, and
Ritz crackers. Ju- know Cousin Henrietta had a bad fall? Imonna take a sweet
potato casserole on over. Ella Sue just had a baby. Imonna pop on over with a
King Ranch casserole. Lawd ha’ mercy. Pastor Joe Don just passed and he was
only 102 years old. Immona whup up a nice green bean casserole and take it on
over. How’s yo Mama’n’em? I ain’t seen ‘em for ages. I reckon I’ll just mosey on
over with a macaroni ‘n’ cheese casserole.
Southerners take care of their own with comforting casseroles. If the recipe’s not
primly written in Mama’s precise cursive handwriting on a notecard in her little tin
recipe box, then you’ll find it in a dog-eared Junior League cookbook or a spiral
bound church cookbook. Casseroles are what we do best. They provide ultimate
comfort all within the confines of a 9 x 13-inch Pyrex dish and you can’t ask for
much more than that. Just stir together some love, joy, concern, gentility, and
friendship and top it with Ritz, butter, and cheese. Serve with a side of tenderness
and compassion. And you got yo’self a Southern Casserole.
Dr. Lisa Barr Shows Readers How to Kick the Pain Habit
in Outsmart Your Pain!
Author to discuss book Aug. 4-5 at The Well Yoga Co-op on the Outer Banks
(Virginia Beach, Va., July 23, 2018 ) – Over a 30-
year career as a physiatrist, Dr. Lisa Barr has helped
countless patients overcome debilitating physical
pain, in addition to experiencing a painful recovery
of her own. Now, she shows readers how to kick the
pain habit with the launch of a groundbreaking book,
Outsmart Your Pain!
In her debut book, Barr explains how the nervous
system and one’s mental and emotional state can
trigger chronic pain, and she lays out eight steps to
keep it at bay.
“I wrote this book as a guide to help people understand
the mind-body relationship to pain and how to
overcome, or outsmart, it by making simple changes in
their mindset and lifestyle,” said Barr, a board-certified
physiatrist serving clients in Coastal Virginia and the
Outer Banks.
Barr’s book arrives at a timely moment when the nation’s
opioid epidemic has become the fastest growing
public health problem in the U.S., according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Offering
alternatives to prescription medications, she explores
how pain is an output of the brain and is often a physical
manifestation of stress.
In the first half of Outsmart Your Pain!, Barr reveals
how stress and pain can become a habit caused by
poor posture, sleep habits, nutrition and body awareness,
among other sources. In the second half, she
guides readers through eight steps to release pain,
from rooting out the mental and emotional triggers that
cause fear, and thus pain, to re-training mental habits
as well as recognizing physical postures that contribute
to it.
Barr was in such acute pain that she had to stretch out
on her office floor between seeing patients.
“I realized that in order to fully heal and achieve real
wellness, I needed to find better balance in my life,”
said Barr. “To me, that meant not working as much as I
had in the past, and taking better care of myself—both
body and mind. It’s a process that I am still working on
every day.”
On the Outer Banks, Barr will lead a group discussion
about how to pursue a pain-free life on Aug. 4
at 7 p.m., followed by a book-signing and meditation
event Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. Both sessions will take place at
The Well Yoga Co-op, in Nags Head, and are free and
open to the public.
“These triggers don’t even have to be particularly
traumatic,” said Barr. “All that’s required is that they
have been persistent enough to cause the distress. As
a result, we typically turn to a habitual or addictive way
of trying to manage painful feelings.”
Barr’s own experience with chronic pain developed
following a boating mishap years ago. On a family
excursion in Virginia Beach, she sustained a head and
neck injury when the vessel struck a sandbar, sending
her flying across the deck. She hit her head against
the bow and suffered a severe compression of her
spine and later herniated discs. Two surgeries and
seemingly endless therapies followed. At one point,
A Coastal Virginia native, Dr. Lisa Barr is a seasoned physician with a
passion for treating people with musculoskeletal conditions that cause
pain and dysfunction. She is board certified in Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation. Since completing her training over 30 years ago,
she founded APM Spine and Sports Physicians, an interdisciplinary
practice devoted to treating pain. Currently, she focuses her energy on
Welcome to August. To many sportsmen this month represents
the dog days of summer. To the artist it is the time to
finish up those wonderful beach paintings and prepare your
paints for the fall scenery yet to come. You still have time to
get in some more summertime painting before the seasonal
change.
Paint and Sip parties have been the “art happenings” this
year and many have been going on all around our area and
in the surrounding states. These are fun parties to attend
and get your “art” on. If you would like to try an adventurous
foray into painting or would just like to begin. This is an activity
I would strongly suggest. For a minimal investment you
get food, drink, canvas, paint and brushes plus some quality
instruction. It is an excellent opportunity to start painting and
see if you would like to continue.
Rock painting continues to be rampant in our area! There
are several groups in and around our area.if you are looking
for another avenue of painting I would also suggest getting
involved with one of these rock groups. It is enjoyable
and the friendships you will make are enduring and uplifting! Please
allow me to give you a list of the groups. Perhaps
you would like to join with one or more of these groups.
They are: Elizabeth City Rocks, Currituck rocks, Grandy
Rocks, Edenton Rocks, Outer Banks Rocks, North Eastern
North Carolina (NENC) Rocks, Chesapeake Rocks, Deep
Creek Rocks, Suffolk Rocks, Suffolk Rock swaps, Norfolk
Rocks, Sandbridge Rocks, OBX Rocks and Virginia Beach
Rocks. If you find a rock, look on the back and post a picture
of that rock on the group’s facebook page.
Fluid art is also a very popular form of art that has been
around for a while but is now burgeoning to the forefront. I
would like to describe how one artist combines fluid art with
the use of a simple dish strainer. The artist gets a canvas
or a small plywood platform , made to the size desired to
paint on, artist’s choice. Then mixes, in a measuring cup or
other see through cup, each acrylic paint color with a pouring
medium (some artists use plain Elmer’s glue ), this is done
in layers all in the cup at once. The dish strainer is placed
in the center of the canvas or board being used, slowly the
artist pours the acrylics from the cup into the strainer, the
paint runs through the strainer in all directions in beautiful
patterns. Slowly pouring until the paint covers the whole
canvas or board. It creates beautiful peacock feather-like
designs. The technique will differ depending on the design
of the strainer used and of course the colors of acrylic paint.
Afterwards, when the paint has cured, the artist will cover
the design in a resin or varnish. There are some excellent
videos on this technique. You can look on fb on the Art Insider,
Genius Ideas, to see more examples of this art!
Your goal this week. As usual, is to put some colors on
canvas, on paper, or on a rock! Send me some of pictures of
your artwork... please. I will try and incorporate a picture or
two in the coming months.
The “dog” days of August can be enjoyable if you start doing
some painting and beat the heat! Since it is shark week
I will post a rock I did in the past as an example of fun rock
painting!
Don’t forget the First Friday Art Walk in Elizabeth City.
Also, check out the art classes offered in and around your
county.
The watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is found throughout
the United States growing in shallow moving fresh
water. The aquatic watercress was introduced to the US
from Europe and Asia. Before we get too far, please do not
be misled by the genus category of this plant with the landbased
flower by the same common name nasturtium. The
flower was named after the aquatic plant because of the
similarity in botanical oils both plants produce.
Watercress has the distinction of being one of the oldest
known leaf vegetables consumed by humans. It was a
staple food for Roman soldiers and Hippocrates, known as
the father of medicine, used the plant to treat patients for a
range of medical conditions.
The nutritional benefits of watercress are significant and
many. It is a member of the cruciferous family that enjoys
such better-known healthful members as cabbage, broccoli
and kale. One cup of watercress contains more than one
hundred percent of the USRDA of vitamin K. The plant is
superior to spinach for dietary iron it provides. It is noteworthy
for the levels of vitamins A and C it contains, the beneficial
effect of lowering blood pressure, and it demonstrates
a positive role of minimizing the side effects of cancer
treatments.
Uncooked watercress has a distinct peppery taste that
adds culinary interest to salads and soups as a garnish.
Roughly translated, nasturtium means “nose twister”. It
once enjoyed great favor as part of the working person’s
diet and then migrated to the tea party crowd in the form of
watercress sandwiches. When cooked, it is a versatile ingredient
that is featured in soup, pesto, pizza, deviled eggs,
and as a lettuce substitute in BLTs or your favorite wrap.
In the absence of trusted foraged sources nearby, you can
purchase the plant from better supermarkets and specialty
food stores.
Watercress Soup
Ingredients
3 large bunches watercress, destalked and chopped
– about 8 oz (reserve a few leaves for garnishing)
4 oz butter
the white parts of 5 leeks, washed and chopped
4 medium potatoes, about 1 lb 8 oz peeled and
chopped
3 pints vegetable stock
4 heaping tablespoons sour cream
salt and black pepper to taste
Melt the butter in a large thick-based saucepan, then
add the prepared leeks, potato and watercress and
stir them around so that everything is coated with
the melted butter.
Sprinkle in some salt and pepper then cover with a
lid and let the vegetables wilt over a very gentle heat
for about 20 minutes, giving the mixture a good stir
about halfway through. Add the stock, bring everything
to a simmer and cook, covered, for about 10-
15 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
Remove the pan from the heat and allow the soup to
cool slightly – puree ingredients in a food processor
or blender. Return the contents to the saucepan,
swirl in three tablespoons of sour cream, season to
taste and reheat very gently. Serve in soup bowls
and garnish each one with a little extra sour cream
and a few watercress leaves.
August,,,,the dog days for hunters and fishermen.
Especially with the extremely wet weather we have
been experiencing lately. Deer season will be upon us
in a few weeks. I have one question for you....Are you
ready? Prepping for the upcoming season is much more
than just pulling out last year’s equipment and stepping
into the field. getting prepared begins by scouting your
area. Scouting , at this time , given our wet weather
is almost non-existent, but it is an activity that is very
important to our upcoming season. If you are hunting private
land or with a club you have to be out at the fields/
woods area several times before hunting season looking
for deer. I don’t mean walking in on their trails, wear your
boots, and leaving your scent everywhere, (take precautions
about scent), but truly scouting your area. If you
can get out at various times during the off season using
a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope, look for the deer
in your hunting area. Make copious notes in a trail journal
or on a map. Note the patterns and time of day you spot
the deer.
In the event you are unable to get out several times for
some self-scouting trips,, try and obtain a trail camera.
These devices can be invaluable to a hunter that is
not able to put the time in the field to observe the deer,
whether due to work or family obligations. A trail-cam
could be the next best thing to being there. If nothing
else it will show you the multitude of animals on the property
you are hunting. However, remember your scent will
be in the areas that you place the camera(s).
The NCBA and Boneyard Archery have come together
to have a big 3-D event just before our bow season
starts. There will be vendors, novelty shoots, 20 targets
indoors and 20 targets outdoors. The dates are: Saturday
August 18th, 9 AM - 4PM and Sunday, August 19th,
9AM – 2PM at Boneyard Archery, located at 184 Old
Covered Bridge Road, Madison, NC.
Whatever you do in getting prepared for the upcoming
season, check your equipment, practice shooting, and
have fun!
Screen printing press and conveyor for $400
Call 252 489 8667 ask for Jesse
Note the feeding ares. Food sources are important.
What are the food sources that the deer are keying in
on? Check out the forest... are there any fruit trees on
your property? White acorn trees? What crops are being
planted nearby? Each of these can give you a clue to
the patterns the deer are using and enable you to have
a more successful season. It is also important to find two
other areas. Bedding areas and staging areas. Bedding
areas are just that … places where the deer bed down
until that habit of eating makes them get up and move.
Staging areas are the areas just outside of the food plots
. The deer move around in these areas just before entering
the food plots. These are excellent ambush areas for
the bowhunter. Check them out. Look for the faint trails,
usually indicative of buck movement.
Upcoming events:
NCBA Annual Picnic, August 5th, Guilford Bowhunters
Club, Starting around 11:00AM and eating around
1:00PM. The event will be held at 6057 Rock Quarry
Road. Please bring a dish or dessert, the main course
and drinks are provided.
Check our website for more details.
Respectfully submitted.
Northeast North Carolina Family History – thoughts on things new…
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
It has been a year since we moved to lower Currituck. For anyone
who moves, there will always be adjustments and a variety
of new experiences some noteworthy and others not. The question
is what would be of interest to our posterity? A few weeks ago we
had the chance to spend a few hours with my husband’s aunt and
uncle at his sister’s home. They were briefly in the area from their
home in Florida. We had long promised to visit them in Gloucester,
Virginia to talk about family history, stories and look over photos but
years went by and suddenly they were much further away – lesson
learned (AGAIN!) – don’t put those conversations off that you think
you will eventually get to.
As her mother, my husband’s grandmother, had died when his
aunt was twelve, she was concerned she would not have many
memories to share, but as we spoke, I was able to share some information
now available on Ancestry.com that her mother had been
a postmaster in Waterlily in Currituck back in the early 1930’s. She
had never been told that. She shared that her father had been a
surfman during WWI which was a fact none of us knew. She added
that he had often spoken about it which is why she remembered
it well. We had hoped to learn more about her mother’s Sanderlin
line but she said after her mother’s death six months after her
Sanderlin grandmother’s death, she lost touch with her Sanderlin
relatives and her father didn’t share many relevant details and because
of her age she hadn’t thought to ask.
She remembered buying ice cream for five cents after church
then walking to her Hampton grandparents’ home for Sunday dinner.
She recalled eating lots of fried chicken and lemon pies. One
of the sad yet sweet memories she had was after returning from
church, they found her mother very ill and drove her to the old hospital
in Elizabeth City where she was placed in an oxygen tent. The
last words she heard her mother say were, “It’s so beautiful over
there.” It was a great pleasure to share memories of commonplace
things that were new to all of us, with promises to share more.
One of the struggles of a new place is getting used to where
everything is. Many had warned me of the empty shelves at local
stores during the summer on or near the Outer Banks. I generally
like to shop on Mondays, which worked fine during the winter, but I
quickly learned that shelves are not restocked until Wednesday or
Thursday and some items are questionable even then!! I was just
getting used to the Grandy Food Lion when they did a major overhaul
and my tired mind had to start learning where things were all
over again. I think many of us in this region shared that pain. Distances
to many things have been a bit of a challenge after decades
of living in a city. I can only think how spoiled we all are compared
to how our ancestors had to get around – so I won’t complain too
much. I really need to allow more time and add a little extra for the
wait to pull out onto Caratoke Highway…
Living surrounded by trees has been something I haven’t done
in 40 years and in the Rockies we didn’t have anywhere near the
variety of birds we’ve been able to see here. Colors and bird calls
I’ve never seen or heard. We added a hummingbird feeder recently
and laugh at their antics as they chase each other off. Not a fan of
the chiggers in the pine straw or the current crop of yellow flies, but
there has to be a trade off somewhere.
My husband continued his job with closer access to the Outer
Banks and much less drive time but for me it meant two new
jobs. The first one was at H2OBX last summer and my current job
starting last November as a historical interpreter at the Whalehead
in Corolla. What a great blessing, as I was able to discover my new
connection as a sixth cousin to Marie Louise Lebel Knight who built
the home with her second husband Edward Collings Knight. I can’t
forget to mention that I have really enjoyed getting to know the rest
of the staff there – not always the case in every new job situation.
Being in Corolla had me delve more in depth into the Sanderlin line
which brought forth new information, too.
July brought new ornaments made from the original Whalehead
copper roof tiles. Every year 300 are made with the striations from
copper with its lovely green patina. It’s been fun for me to give
some as gifts to my husband’s siblings and our children and tell
them their great or great-great grandparents looked upon the very
roof the shingles come from. I’m including a picture. They are
$15.00 or $16.01 with tax not including shipping. If you won’t be
in Corolla any time soon you can call 453-9040 and get something
new that is very old. I hope you will record some of the new things
happening with you or your family this summer. Even the mundane
– what you ate for Sunday dinner will be of interest to someone
decades from now!
Financial Tips for Alzheimer’s Caregivers
Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe
I
f you are, or will be, a caregiver for elderly
parents or another close family member
living with Alzheimer’s disease, you may experience
some emotional stress – but you also
need to be aware of the financial issues involved
and what actions you can take to help address
them. You will find few “off the rack” solutions for
dealing with the financial challenges associated
with Alzheimer’s. For one thing, family situations
can vary greatly, both in terms of the financial
resources available and in the availability and
capabilities of potential caregivers. Furthermore,
depending on the stage of the disease, people
living with Alzheimer’s may have a range of
cognitive abilities, which will affect the level of
care needed.
Here are some general suggestions that may be
useful to you in your role as caregiver:
• Consult with family members and close friends.
It’s extremely hard to be a solo caregiver. By
consulting with other family members or close
friends, you may find that some of them have
the time and ability to help.
• Consider obtaining durable power of attorney.
If you possess a durable power of attorney for
finances, you can make financial decisions for
the person with Alzheimer’s when he or she is
no longer able. With this authority, you can help
the individual living with the disease – and your
entire family – avoid court actions that can take
away control of financial affairs. And on a shortterm
basis, having durable power of attorney
can help you take additional steps if needed.
You’ll find it much easier to acquire durable
power of attorney when the individual living
with Alzheimer’s is still in the early stage of the
disease and can willingly and knowingly grant
you this authority.
• Gather all necessary documents. You’ll be in
a better position to help the individual living with
Alzheimer’s if you have all the important financial
documents – bank statements, insurance
policies, wills, Social Security payment information,
deeds, etc. – in one place.
• Get professional help. You may want to consult
with an attorney, who can advise you on establishing
appropriate arrangements, such as a
living trust, which provides instructions about the
estate of the person for whom you’re providing
care and names a trustee to hold title to property
and funds for the beneficiaries. You also might
Did you know the
want to meet with a financial advisor, who can
help identify potential resources and money-saving
services. And a tax professional may be able
to help you find tax deductions connected to
your role as caregiver.
Finally, use your experience as a caregiver to
reminder yourself of the importance of planning
for your own needs. For example, a financial
professional can suggest ways of preparing for
the potentially huge costs of long-term care,
such as those arising from an extended stay in a
nursing home. Caring for an individual living with
Alzheimer’s has its challenges. But by taking
the appropriate steps, you can reduce uncertainties
– and possibly give yourself and your
family members a greater sense of security and
control.
New Life of Currituck
by Pastor Dan Bergey
don’t know about you, but for me there are phrases my parents said to
I me growing up that I still remember. One such phrase was a verse in
the Bible that says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when
he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 I remember one time
when I was doing something I had been asked many times not to do,
Dad punished me for it and then said this verse. Dad was not very happy
when I rolled my eyes as if to tell him, yea yea I hear you.
Years later I was on my uncle’s sailboat enjoying a day on the water
with him and we were talking about all kinds of sailing things and he
repeated a statement he heard a long time ago. “The person who is
enslaved to the compass has the freedom of the seas.” That statement
continued to make me thankful for the boundaries my parents gave me.
How hard it was at times to try and follow them, at times I thought they
were cruel and unjust. But then there was a time in my life I thought that
the Bible was that way to. These rules and regulation that are written in
the Bible are crazy, until I began to realize the freedom that the boundaries
in Scripture give me. God wrote them down not to restrict me, or hold
me back, but to give me freedom to experience a relationship with Him.
Those boundaries set in my life from an early age, even though I tested
them a lot were there for my freedom and protection. My boundaries
settings started at home and were reinforced at Church. These are the
two places the Bible expected a person to learn and understand boundaries
and their purpose. Two of the verses leading up to verse 6 tell us
the difference between a person who has learned those boundaries
and the one who has not. Verse 3 says “The prudent sees the evil and
hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it.” Verse 5 says
“Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse (The person without
boundaries) He who guards himself will be far from them. (The person
with boundaries) I would like to encourage parents to set boundaries for
their children, boundaries set with God’s love and relationship will last a
lifetime. I am praying for you.
Do the Arithmetic
By Ron Ben-Dov
Copyright 7/29/18 all rights reserved
The devil is into arithmetic,
He’s always trying to divide;
He definitely loves subtraction,
He tries to take you away from Jesus,
And does it all the time;
He’ll multiply your problems,
And add to them all the time;
But Jesus isn’t like that,
Though He likes arithmetic just fine;
He’ll never seek to divide us;
He’ll add blessings all the time;
He’ll multiply your blessings,
And subtract the devil’s lies;
So always follow Jesus;
Just do the arithmetic;
The cost to you is, zero,
For He’s already paid the price;
His sacrifice, gave us, eternal life.
held prisoner at Castle William on Governor’s Island, he was then
transferred on November 1, 1861, and paroled on February 3,
