Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
By Jane Elfring
President, Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
E
lizabeth City Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers
to help with everything from working in
our store to rehabbing, repairing and building homes
for qualified buyers in Pasquotank County. We are
trying to compile a list of people who can help with
building projects we anticipate working on in the
next few months.
These projects include completion of a home
rehab project and repairs on a home for a local
veteran. We need people who can help with installation
of cabinets and interior trim, build porches
and wheelchair ramps, paint, pour concrete, grind
a tree stump and other general labor on worksites.
Experience is not required because we will provide
instruction for willing volunteers.
Not able to work on a site but still interested in
helping? We need people to prepare lunches for volunteers
and contact local businesses for donations.
This is a great project for a club or church group
looking for volunteer opportunities in the area.
The Habitat family selection model requires many
different volunteers to evaluate applications, visit the
homes to verify the family’s need for a house, and
mentor new families once they move in. People with
social work backgrounds are ideal to help with these
tasks.
Our board needs people with different skills as
well: research and write grant proposals, recruit
local businesses to support different projects, and
organize fundraising events.
If you are interested in helping with any of these
items, contact Mariah Andrade, andrademariah8@
Our store is our primary revenue generator for
build projects. To hold costs down, volunteers help
our small staff pick up donations and organize donations
in the store.
