Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel NEW STAFF MEMBER JOINS MUSEUM by: Joyce Bornfriend T he Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center recently welcomed a new staff member. Barbara Miller assumed her duties as Director of Education and Public Relations at the museum in June. As a former volunteer, Miller has been involved with the museum for a number of years and is familiar with on-going programs and goals for the future. Her native heritage gives her a clear perspective for museum projects while her work with the Office of Justice Services/Bureau of Indian Affairs in Towaoc, Colorado, gives her a broad understanding of current Native American issues. She has organized and managed major public events and is already working with a committee on plans for a Native American Music Festival at the museum next spring. It will be the beginning of many exciting programs planned for the future. Miller, who left a position with the Bureau of Reclamation in in Albuquerque, NM, for her new role will be developing two additional exhibits at the museum as well as leading plans to expand outreach activities for school groups through the use of technology. She will be building on existing networks and bringing in new resources to provide programs and workshops through distance learning. “We are pleased that Barbara is coming home“ said Executive Director, Carl Bornfriend. “She loves the Outer Banks and is passionate about sharing Native American heritage. We know she has a great deal to offer and are looking forward to the programs she will organize for our visitors.” The museum is located on Hatteras Island and is open Tuesday through Sunday (Monday by appointment only) from 10:30 AM - 5 PM. Ceramics Show To Open At Dare County Arts Council In September Read More at: outerbankswave.com V essels, sculptures, and wall-mounted work will be featured in Dare County Arts Council’s Ceramic Show, which opens in their Vault Gallery Room in September. The Ceramic Show is being curated by sculptor and installation artist Gabrielle Graber. In 2017, she graduated with her MFA from NYSCC at Alfred University and is currently living in North Carolina as a resident artist at Pocosin Arts. Her practice is an ongoing investigation of being a body in the world where layers of experience and interactions collide into material form. “Clay allows us to experience the essence of a gesture,” said curator and artist Gabrielle Graber. “Whether that gesture be from a functional or sculptural perspective, a piece moves from a malleable arrangement of molecules to a rigid record of the history of its movement. By selecting a variety of ceramic artwork created by local and regional ceramic artists, I hope to showcase this creative act in a space where individual aesthetics can coexist.” Artists wishing to participate in this special exhibit can find a prospectus online at DareArts.org/ceramicshow and at the DCAC Gallery located in downtown Manteo. The show is open to all artists working with ceramics as their primary medium that are over 18 years of age. All entries must be original and executed within the last five years. Deadline for application is August 1. Selection and notification of participating artists will be announced by August 15. Selected entries will be eligible for Best In Show, Excellence, and Honorable Mention awards, which will be announced at the show’s opening reception. On Friday, September 7 an opening reception will be held for the Ceramic Show at 6pm. The opening reception will take place during Manteo’s First Friday celebrations and will feature snacks, drinks and live music by Sandbar Blues. The reception is free and open to the public. The show will remain on display through Tuesday, October 2. Those interested in learning more about ceramics can take Gabrielle Graber’s three day clay workshop “Abstracting Reality: Figures & Objects Clay” at Dare County Arts Council July 26-28. Workshop participants will learn the basic of modeling, carving, pinching, and coiling and will create compelling sculptural objects inspired by everyday interactions.
