were 20 street artists; now,
there are over 100.
Experienced artists from the
cities and abroad are coming
and pushing locals to paint
bigger and better,” Thorax
says. Street art sensibilities
have become more local,
infusing traditional Balinese
elements and tackling
environmental issues affecting
the island. For Thorax, it’s
something that’s here to stay:
“The art is everywhere now,
whether you are driving down
streets or eating at a small
café. It’s become part of the
Canggu DNA.”
A PLATFORM FOR
YOUNG VOICES
“Street art is the universal
language of young people.
Young artists try to express
themselves differently, and
there are no rules except one:
be original,” says artist Trang
Suby. He would know: the
France-born artist began
doing graffiti at age 12. He kept
his passion for street art when
he moved to Ho Chi Minh and
had seen the local scene
evolve firsthand. The frenetic
city centre that is District 1 may
soon be known for more than
its crazy traffic, food, and
architecture as new street art
pops up all the time. “Street
art is the latest big art
movement, whether people
like it or not,” he adds. “You
don’t need knowledge or a
pass to be amazed by it. It is
always changing, always a
surprise. It can bring you to
places you would never have
been if you stuck to your
travel guide. You will meet
different people, maybe get
to know the real Vietnam.”
EVER-CHANGING
ART IN A
COSMOPOLITAN
SETTING
“I’ve been in Hong Kong for
ten years, but it seems street
art has only become popular
recently,” observes artist Elsa
Jean de Dieu. Public interest
has grown as murals sprout
in plain sight across
neighbourhoods like SoHo
and events like the annual
HKwalls Street Art and Mural
Festival let street artists take
centre stage. “By observing
street art in any city, you can
get a feeling for the
aesthetics of the artists and
