WELCOME
MESSAGE
Lee Lik Hsin
CEO, Scoot
Hello, and Welcome Aboard!
We are pleased to introduce new
facilities to further streamline our
check-in process in Singapore! Forgo
the queues at our check-in counters,
and instead check-in for your flights
and drop your checked baggage, if
any, with our self-service check-in
kiosks and automatic bag drop
machines. In case you didn’t know,
web check-in is also available for
flights departing Singapore and Berlin,
with more destinations to be added
progressively. Guests that have
checked in online without document
check requirements or checked
luggage can Scoot-to-Gate and head
directly to immigration!
At Scoot, we are continuously
looking into how to enhance our
customers’ journey, which is why we
have partnered Qualtrics, an
experience management company!
We are collecting post-flight feedback
which will then be analysed using
advanced artificial intelligence and
machine learning to find out where
and how we can improve. So, if you
receive an e-survey from us we hope
you can take the time to provide
feedback to help us serve you better!
Since its launch, over 150,000
members have joined our member
portal, Scoot Insider. Anyone can sign
up to enjoy awesome member-only
benefits such as exclusive promotions
and updates, faster bookings with
personalised travel details, birthday
and more!
In July, we called out to readers to
help train our newest chatbot ‘intern’
M.A.R.V.I.E on our Singapore FlyScoot
Facebook page. M.A.R.V.I.E can
answer queries, search for flights,
make flight bookings, and allow
payment by credit card. Thanks to
you, he is now tackling over 1,700
queries on average daily, with an
average transaction time of 7 minutes
and a resolution rate of 67%. If you’re
feeling too lazy to book a flight on our
website, why not chat with M.A.R.V.I.E
and have him do the work for you?
FOOTSTEPS
Going offline on a journey
might entail some hassles,
but it can be an eyeopening
experience in
many ways. Here are
some tips on how to have
an adventure without
depending on your
Internet connection
HACKABLES
WORDS LESTER V. LEDESMA PHOTOGRAPHY REENEY JENKINS, ALEXIS-BROWN ON UNSPLASH
THE TELEPHONE IS
YOUR BEST FRIEND
In the old days, getting a hotel
room was a simple matter of
picking up the telephone. You
dialled a number and made
inquiries over the line. No
vouchers or online payments
were required, and the hotel just
trusted you to show up on the
specified date. In contrast to
online booking where prices are
fixed, talking to an actual person
might even give you an
opportunity to negotiate the
rate. The same can be said of
many other services from car
hires to package tours – if you
can’t ask in person, the phone is
the next best thing.
SMILE AND
MAKE CONTACT
Woe to the tourist who gets his
information from Google Maps,
instead of that cab driver or
market vendor who might have
decades of local knowledge just
waiting to be shared. When in
doubt, I suggest switching off
your screen and asking a local.
Paired with common safety
sense, it could lead to a one-ofa-kind
travel experience. While in
the ancient town of Lijiang in
China, I happened to ask a local
how to get to the mountainside
village of Yuhu. It turned out he
was from there, and he happily
accompanied me to his sleepy
hometown. There we rode native
horses and drank lots of tea—you
can’t get this kind of random
encounter from Wikitravel!
HACKABLES
USE A NOTEBOOK,
NOT FACEBOOK
Social media is great if you
want to share experiences and
get feedback instantly, but
don’t count on it to give you
that warm, nostalgic feeling
when you revisit your posts
years from now. Compared to
Facebook’s carefully curated
#feelgood #humblebrag
entries, keeping a written travel
journal does a better job of
documenting your adventure
with all its highlights and low
points. When I look back at a
Vietnam trip that my wife and I
took many years ago, what I
remember most is not that
gorgeous waterfall shot that I
later put on Instagram – it was
that freezing New Year’s Eve
dinner in the highland city of
Dalat, which we had at a
streetside noodle stall with a
pitcher of local wine. There’s
also that one night we spent in
a creepy deserted hotel that
we couldn’t wait to leave –we
booked that room online.
OFFLINE INSPIRATION
Travel guides (both online
and printed) tend to focus
more on practicalities than
experience. When I do my
travel research, I always
make it a point to consult
the To Asia With Love
series of books. These are
beautifully written guides
that focus on one country,
and are filled with essays
and reflections written by
longtime expats and
inspired locals. They do an
excellent job conveying the
magic of travel to readers.
LET’S TALK
ABOUT SILKS
A paragon of hospitality
excellence in a handy
location – halfway between
the harbour and the
commercial centre – Silks
Club Kaohsiung is as much
an art gallery as a boutique
hotel. In the lobby, Dancing
Particles (by ART+COM)
provides a wonderfully
calming entrance; Lunar
Watch by Olafur Eliasson, an
interactive piece, enlivens In
Jade restaurant/bar (where
there isn’t a happy hour, but
“Exquisite Hour”); and
bespoke pieces hang in each
luxurious bedroom. The
UKAI-tei teppanyaki/grill,
sake bar and infinity pool/
sauna all testify to the
remarkable attention to detail
– immense care has been
taken to enhance all five
senses, and the comfort
factor is truly next-level.
KAOHSIUNG
ARTISTIC
MODERNITY MEETS
FUSION FOOD
In 2012 I’d visited Taipei and
Yilan, and fallen instantly for
their madcap mix of the
hypermodern and traditional.
This time, I’d come to discover
the broader character of this
oddly overlooked island –
starting with a jaunt around
Taiwan’s third-largest city, 260
kilometres from the Philippines’
northernmost point.
Kaohsiung’s uber-efficient
airport, avant-garde architecture,
and clean streets struck direct
parallels with Tokyo, and
gliding up to the Silks Club
hotel, with its hypnotic kinetic
installation in the lobby, only
heightened the Japanese aura.
The commercial centre,
Sanduo, continued the theme:
design-forward malls,
streetscapes straight out of
Shibuya, and a bustling, yet
strangely calm ambience.
Central Park’s Scenic Lake
offers photo-ops with its
Japanese bridge and musical
sculptures.
The KRT (Kaohsiung Rapid
Transit), which opens into the
park, works like a dream. Its
trains are even shinier than
Singapore’s; individual
compartments accommodate
bicycles and wheelchair users;
and intuitive interiors let
travellers clutch a rail anywhere
in the carriage. It’s fantastically
simple to use: buy an iPass at
any convenience store,
pre-load with cash, then top
up using machines at stations.
KRT has just three lines, each
named by its colour.
Changing at Formosa
Boulevard offered a sight to
floor any hard-bitten traveller.
The world’s largest stainedglass
sculpture, Dome of Light,
fills the concourse with
luminous colour, making this a
contemporary art museum as
much as a rail interchange.
A creative inspiration of
another sort awaited at Pier-2
Art Center, which arose from a
block of warehouses a decade
ago. As the port declined,
Pier-2 set the stage for a
citywide embrace of public art:
quirky designs now enhance
stations, parks, city walls, and
EXPRESS YOURSELF
For all its advancement
and prosperity, Taiwan is
remarkably affordable. A
one-way ticket traversing
the entire nation, on a train
ride lasting 90 minutes
and reaching 300km/h,
costs just TWD 1,480. The
high-speed railway’s
fastidious tidiness, design,
and service style recall
Japan’s Shinkansen with its
sleek, turquoise-white
interior and almost
imperceptible movement.
FEATURE STORY
Larger-thanlife
pedestrian precincts. Its
flamboyant sculptures – a red
dinosaur, angular abstractions,
giant robots – have revived this
fading district, where children
ride a mini-train as hipsters sup
ice coffee at cafés.
The KRT covers vital areas,
but stations are far apart, and I
found myself making long
walks to appreciate the city
thoroughly. It was on one such
stroll that I began to
understand Kaohsiung’s
universal appeal. There were
upscale cafés, one owned by a
lady who’d studied in England
(“I love your accent!”); the
super-random Laborers’ Park
Night Market, a hub of weird
food (“bear stone eggs”),
cheap sunglasses, and
fairground games; and an
Italian-fusion restaurant
looking across to Sanduo’s
neon billboards, where I
feasted on spaghetti with
peanuts, chilli and chicken.
Enchanted by this synthesis
of the spectacular and bizarre, I
ventured out on day two with a
wide-open mind. Making a
loop around the harbourside, I
gazed at the undulating
Exhibition Centre and KUBIC’s
bright shipping containers that
house boutiques, studios, and
cafés. In suburban Weiwuying,
the National Center for the Arts’
elegant curves are inspired by
banyan trees. Further down
Sanduo 1st Road, Dan Dan
Hamburger is a proudly local
chain combining Western fast
food with Taiwanese tastes.
On the western bank of the
Love River, which slices
downtown in two, a ceramic
panda stood in a rest area
billowing with flame trees, as
fishing boats left ripples in their
wake. Soon I was back at the
harbour boarding a ferry to Cijin
island, where the world
stopped turning centuries ago.
Medieval Tianhou temple
stands on touristy Old Street,
while Cihou fort and lighthouse
cling forlornly to the rocky
northern tip. These ancient
structures contrast with a
mountain tunnel’s glow-inthe-dark
constellations.
Finally, I reached Fo Guang
Shan, Taiwan’s largest Buddhist
monastery – an OTT theme
park where pagodas, shrines,
and Buddha statues are
elaborately spotlit around
dusk. Both a tech-enhanced
art project and huge-scale
architectural feat, it summed
up Kaohsiung’s appeal in one
fell stroke.
TAIPEI
GREAT GRUB AMID
MEDIEVAL STREETS
Taipei’s gargantuan station is
daunting for a first-timer, but
after trudging through myriad
retail areas and passageways, a
cheery taxi-rank official –
perhaps sensing my
bewilderment – saw me off
(“Be careful now!”) in a yellow
cab. Soon I was in another
world entirely, Taipei’s oldest
district Wanhua, with its lanes
of garment stalls and incensewaving
devotees at Longshan
temple. Yet from here it’s one
quick hop on the MRT – using
the same card I’d bought in
Kaohsiung! – to neonsplashed
Ximen, where
cocktail bars now encircle Red
House theatre, and boutique
hotels nestle amid garish
mochi and noodle stalls.
Even in a city as sprawling as
Taipei, it’s surprising what you
can accomplish in a day. Diving
into the MRT’s blissful air-con
at regular intervals, I bounced
around key sights, parklands,
newly revived historic areas,
and gorgeous enclaves I never
knew existed. After walking
through the serene Botanic
Gardens, I circled the
magnificent Presidential Office
Building towards 228 Peace
Memorial Park, a green oasis of
monuments and stone bridges.
Within minutes I’d arrived at the
awe-inspiring Taipei 101, before
a complete change of scene at
Dihua Street.
The city’s oldest thoroughfare
has undergone a renaissance of
the best kind. Traditional
attractions remain, but beyond
the stores selling weird and
wonderful foodstuffs, and Xiahai
City God temple, where young
women pray for children,
boutiques and cafés have set
up shop within the medieval
architecture. Ubiquitous
man-buns indicated this was
hipster central, so I obligingly
devoured a juicy gua bao
(Taiwanese pork bun) at Danish
microbrewery Mikkeller before
heading to Chiang Kai-Shek
Memorial Hall, where lateafternoon
sunlight cast long
shadows over Liberty Square.
Just before sunset in Daan
Forest Park, a serenade drifted
over the Ecological Pool. Gulls
and herons jostled for position
on the central island’s trees,
their squawks reaching
crescendos as they flew from
The imposing
Caesar Metro Taipei’s
cavernous, light-filled
Bar 98 (which serves a
mean Americano, as well as
will welcome the spacious
outdoor pool to cool off.
Located in the timehonoured
Wanhua district
within close proximity of
Longshan, Taipei’s oldest
temple, Caesar Metro
Taipei is also 300 metres
from the MRT; but if you’re
in a hurry, getting a taxi is
almost instantaneous. Cosy
bathtubs and inspiring
views, and friendly service
complete the experience.
Nuggets of advice to
maximise an open-jaw
journey in Formosa.
A tipping tip!
There’s no need to tip in
Taiwan unless you receive
service beyond
expectations; it’s not
customary.
A showcase
for artists and
designers,
Huashan 1914
Creative Park
is repurposed
from an old
Japanese
winery.
branch to branch, while swans
sat stoically on the bank
watching the dizzying white
blur. Just minutes away I found
a paradise of another sort –
the entrancing Yongkang
Street, where antique stores,
restaurants, and galleries
created a picture of perfect
contentment. There was still
time to explore Huashan 1914
Creative Park, a repurposed
Japanese winery, where arty
types meander through a maze
of craft shops, cafés and cinemas.
By the following morning,
the heat had become
overpowering, and I
succumbed to higher and
cooler terrain north-east.
With typical convenience, just
TWD 50 on my iPass (for an
hour-long bus ride from
Muzha MRT) brought me
through winding hillsides to
the fabled Shifen village.
From here, a 15-minute hike
on suspension bridges above
Keelung River led to Taiwan’s
“Little Niagara,” a roaring
40-metre waterfall perfectly
framed by the idyllic scenery.
At Shifen Old Street, on
abandoned railway tracks,
tourists write wishes on
lanterns before releasing
them skywards.
Back in Zhongshan before
sundown, I browsed at Siping
Yangguang market and joined
the reverent throng at Xingtian
temple before veering
underground to an alleyway
full of Japanese fortunetellers.
Finishing the evening
in quintessentially Taiwanese
style, a friend brought me to
Haichen, a décor-free
Chinese eatery opposite the
Mandarin Oriental, where we
enjoyed scallion pancake,
tofu in rich gravy, egg and
kailan soup, and meatballs.
Taipei residents often eat out
daily, and the happy faces
here were all local ones.
On my final morning, I
revisited an old favourite,
SPOT Taipei Film House,
before feasting on
multicoloured meatball pasta
at Zhongshan’s chic-yetaffordable
Café Marché.
Zipping back to Taoyuan
airport courtesy of a Lewis
Hamilton-wannabe driver, I
reflected on a week of
enriching experiences, one
that perhaps only this
fascinating country among its
neighbours could offer at
such budget-friendly prices.
Just the ticket
Buy an iPass (or Easy Pass)
travelcard as soon as you
arrive. It will save you
hundreds of Taiwanese
dollars on buses, trains,
and ferries.
Now you’re talking
Learn some basic
Mandarin. Many younger
locals speak English,
though it’s sometimes
limited. So don’t be
offended if your café order
is unavailable and the
server simply replies, “No.”
Go back to your routes
Bring a reliable, bilingual
map at all times; not just for
navigation, but for pointing
out your destination to taxi
drivers. Don’t rely on
Google Maps.
Let’s go surfing
If you don’t have a local
SIM, many public places
have serviceable WiFi,
including both Taipei and
Kaohsiung MRT and
bus networks.
To cab it all...
Taxis are metered, so you
don’t have to negotiate
fares; Uber offers cheaper
rides, but there are far
fewer cars.
The poet Wallace Stevens
is, of course, the world itself.”
And there’s nothing quite like
hitting the open road to discover
fascinating places around the
globe. The question now is,
where do you start? Across Asia
and the Pacific, here are some
incredible and scenic road trips
you can take the next time you
get that travel itch.
A DOSE OF CULTURE
POINT OF ENTRY: CHENNAI
Touted as the Soul of South
India, Chennai is a good
starting point for an adventure,
with many roads leading to
some of the most amazing
sights of the country. One of
these is Pondicherry, about
150 kilometres away via East
Coast Road (ECR). Driving
along this route is a lovely
experience in itself, as you’ll
get a splendid view of the Bay
of Bengal’s coastline on your
left towards Pondy.
Take a detour to
Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site of temples
some places put
you in the here and
yourself in an old British village.
Take time for snaps by Fraser’s
Clocktower or in front of the
mock Tudor-style homes.
Fraser’s Hill also has eight
nature trails that you can
undertake, each with a
different level of difficulty.
Traveller reviews online say
that one of the most
enjoyable is the 1.5-kilometre
HONOLULU
Oahu, the third-largest island
in Hawai’i, can be explored in a
day. Travel times from one
point to the next can take less
than an hour – it’s the beauty
stops that will make you stay
awhile. For your road trip on
The Gathering Place, start from
the widely popular Waikiki,
then head east.
Stopover at: Waimanalo
This theme park and living
life and activities of the
island’s people. And you’ll
even get to experience a
traditional Hawaiian luau, too.
Stopover at: Kahuku
A quick drive from the previous
stop but definitely an essential
one, Kahuku is where you’ll
find Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck,
the first food truck on the
island to have shrimp as the
star of its menu.
“The scampi has been and
will always be the favourite,”
says Jorge Amorim of
Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. A
dozen shrimp marinated in
olive oil, garlic, and lemon
butter plus double scoops of
rice. Who could resist?
End at: Haleiwa
Its stunning shores and
excellent surf breaks earned
Haleiwa the title of the Surfing
Capital of the World. But more
than these, the bohemian
vibe and artistic lifestyle also
draw in tourists to this
charming town.
Coming over when there’s
no scheduled surfing
competition? Then simply stay
for the sunset. The one you’ll
Because you’ll need all the rest
you can get to take on crossing
the Eyre Highway.
Stopover at: Nullarbor
You’re now on the long and
not-so-winding tree-less road
pretty, well, plain – save for
the occasional kangaroos,
camels, and wombats
crossing. These animals are
either nocturnal or
crepuscular, so steer with care
during dusk and dawn and
avoid driving at night.
Nullarbor
welcome respite
from the vastness of
the Eyre Highway.
Even for a short
End at: Ceduna
Finally, trees! But not only that:
the Great Australian Bight also
offers a wide range of
attractions, from retail to leisure.
Before:
Plan your route and
possible stops. Ask the
local tourism office for a
map, as well as phone
numbers to call in case of
During summer months,
one can’t miss seeing
shital pati almost
everywhere – these strikingly
patterned handcrafted
sleeping mats are widely used
in the capital city of Dhaka
and other parts of
Bangladesh. Shital pati,
which means “cool mat”,
keeps people comfortable
amidst the sweltering summer
heat in the country. The
versatile handicraft, which is
also used as a prayer mat and
decorative item, is also
utilised in other parts of India.
But aside from the visual
delight brought on by its
intricate workmanship and
practical use in everyday
Bangladeshi life, the shital
pati has a more significant
role; it improves the lives of
the weavers whose livelihood
are more or less dependent on
the production of this
traditional symbol of culture.
HUMBLE ROOTS
The base material used for
creating the shital pati comes
from the green cane plant
known as Murta. Also known as
mostak, patipata, or patibet,
the Murta plant typically grows
in the wetlands and is harvested
for its beti (cane strips), which
are then woven to create the
flexible mats. The cane strips are
dipped and boiled in a mixture
of hog plum leaves, boiled rice
juice, and boalilota to give the
fibres the smooth and shiny
texture that you can see from
the finished mats.
The standard shital pati
takes around five days to make,
while the Jamdani mat, which is
bigger and has more intricate
patterns, takes eight to nine
days. There are also
embroidered shital pati mats,
each one requiring around 25
days to make.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
There’s more to the weaving of
shital pati than the creation of
beautiful and functional mats;
it’s also a family-based craft,
starting from the collection of
the beti to the weaving process
itself. Men and women gather
the plants from the fields,
which they take to the weaving
communities. The women are
mostly involved with the
weaving, although both are
seen sitting on the floor and
putting the strings together.
For these families, the whole
business of creating shital pati
is more than just a way of
putting food on the table.
Weaving is a family-bonding
activity and is strongly
integrated into the social lives
of the villagers. The families
involved in the shital pati
trade are mostly from the
low-lying villages in numerous
parts of Bangladesh, although
the greater Sylhet region is
known for being its major
producer.
The production of shital
pati is most Bangladeshi
families’ prime source of
income, especially during the
long months when cultivable
land is extremely scarce.
During this period, weaving
these mats becomes their
alternative means of
livelihood.
COMMON
HINDRANCES
Just like other sources of
income in rural communities,
the production of shital pati
also has its own set of
problems. The common
issues that villagers face are
the scarcity of funds or
resources and the lack of
adequate skills needed to
produce the decorative mats.
The scarcity of Murta plants
hampers the smooth
production of the mats. It takes
around three years to fully grow
a Murta plant, which can be a
very long time for people who
depend on its materials for their
source of income. Another
pressing problem is the lack of
training for weavers. The
villagers admit that more
government and community
initiatives are still needed to
train the people and transform
them into skilled artisans.
PROMOTING
AWARENESS
The Bangladeshi government is
currently pushing the local and
national craft fairs to feature
and promote the shital pati,
which are being sold to local
wholesalers and exported to
Saudi Arabia and other Middle
Eastern countries.
Cooperatives are also being
established in the communities
that produce the shital pati to
maximise the profitability of the
trade. The move also ensures
the transmission of skills among
villagers to pass from generation
to generation. In this way, the
government can empower
underprivileged communities,
especially the women.
A NATIONAL
TREASURE
In 2017, the organisation
UNESCO included shital pati on
its Intangible Cultural Heritage
(ICH) of Humanity. The shital
pati was the fourth ICH from
Bangladesh recognised by
UNESCO – the country’s Baul
songs, the traditional art of
Jamdani weaving, and the
festival Mangal Shobhajatra on
Pahela Baishakh were the first
three to gain the prestigious
recognition.
Bangladesh’s National
Museum jumped in on occasion
by holding a seven-day exhibit
in the same month at its
Nalinikanta Bhattashali gallery.
The exhibition showcased the
different types of shital pati,
and the museum tapped on
several craftsmen to perform
live weaving demonstrations.
The exhibition sparked
optimism regarding the
resurgence of the weaving trade.
The shital pati craftsmen who
attended the event were
hopeful that the UNESCO
recognition would finally make
the government take more
actions to preserve the art
form for future generations.
OWNING A PIECE
OF NATIONAL
IDENTITY
Thankfully, you don’t need to
travel to the rural areas in
Bangladesh to buy a shital
pati. If you’re staying in Dhaka,
you can find lots of stores that
offer a dazzling array of these
mats at competitive prices.
Nowadays, the shital pati
faces increased competition
from plastic mats, which are
cheaper and mass-produced.
But wouldn’t you rather buy an
authentic piece of culture that
is a labour of love by people
who spend a considerable
part of their days protecting
their heritage?
RIDES MADE EASIER
Now you can travel
seamlessly from Dhaka to
Savar and Gazipur, thanks
to the UberIntercity
service. For just 22 Taka
On the outskirts of
Sapporo in northern
Japan, a singular
sculptural work glimmers under
an iridescent, dome-like sky.
But there’s no museum or
gallery in sight. Here, plinths
take the form of sloping green
ridges, the manicured paths a
self-guided tour and the
changing seasons curate its
annual program of events,
from cross-country skiing in
winter to a sea of cherry
blossoms in spring.
Built on a former sewage
wasteland, Moerenuma Park is
a 400-hectare maze of
geometric installations and
landscaped gardens, giving
meaning to the phrase “one
man’s trash is another man’s
treasure.”
Designed by the late
Japanese-American sculptor
Isamu Noguchi, among the
park’s cornucopia of
attractions are a glass Louvrelike
pyramid, a sculptural
playground of more than 126
vividly coloured installations,
and a man-made mountain,
the highest peak in the
Sapporo region.
As the park’s Director, Ms.
Yuko Tanaka, explains,
“Moerenuma Park is one of the
most unique parks in the world.
Its dynamic design of
geometric shapes resembles
Peru’s Nazca Lines when
viewed from above.”
“Unlike other sculpture parks
where works from various
artists are featured, every part
of Moerenuma Park is based
on a single artist’s concept. The
park itself is essentially one
giant sculpture.”
AN ARTFUL LEGACY
Born to an American mother
and a Japanese father, Isamu
Noguchi was a pioneer of the
land-art movement and one of
the 21st century’s most critically
acclaimed sculptors. He
dedicated his career to shaping
public spaces, integrating
Japanese aesthetics with
Western modernism.
Moerenuma Park is widely
considered to be his most
important work, and sadly, one
he never saw realised. After
drawing up the master plan in
November 1988, Noguchi passed
away just one month later, aged
84. It then took 17 years to
complete his final project.
Noguchi was brought onto the
Moerenuma Park project at the
request of local tech
entrepreneur Hiroyuki Hattori,
who had long admired his work.
According to Tanaka, “At 83
years old, Noguchi still had not
been able to bring the plan for
a park and recreational space
he had been developing since
his 20s to life. It was then that
he accepted an invitation from
an entrepreneur in Sapporo
to visit.”
“The area had previously
been used as a landfill, and
Noguchi expressed a strong
desire to use art to restore the
land that humans had
damaged. In response to his
enthusiasm, Sapporo decided
to re-do all previous plans they
had created for a park there
two months after Noguchi’s
visit in March 1988.”
The project architects took
his plans as gospel, bringing
Noguchi’s designs to life as he
had envisioned over the next 17
years. Moerenuma Park was
officially unveiled to the public
in 2005.
A PARK FOR THE
PEOPLE
The further you delve into
Noguchi’s garden of Eden, the
more you appreciate his
passion for functional,
multi-purpose design.
Moerenuma Park is certainly
not an opportunity to flex his
artistic chops, but a genuine
effort in building a space that
brings people together.
“A concept that Noguchi
held onto throughout his life
was the idea of art being
useful to people in their daily
lives. He wanted to create a
world in which art is integrated
into people’s lives, with
beautiful places functioning
as areas for relaxation,”
Tanaka explains.
“Moerenuma Park is an
entrance to that world, where
you can experience the form
and function of art, and the
mysterious feelings it evokes.”
You only have to witness
the changing of the season to
see this in action. In winter,
the park is buried under deep
Hokkaido snow, where skiers
hurtle down Mt Moere or ski
cross-country throughout the
grounds. Springtime fills the
air with fragrant cherry
blossoms, and the rising
mercury tempts picnic goers
and joggers outdoors.
In summer, the park is an
expanse of rich, green grass.
The white-washed concrete
Music Shell provides a stage
for concerts and events, and
children frolic and splash through
the waters of Moere Beach.
Before designing Moerenuma
Park, Noguchi commented:
“my best work is yet to be built.”
One can only hope he is looking
down over Sapporo and seeing
that the opposite is true.
The park can also be
atmospheric commercial district
lit by curlicues of street lamps
and overhead bulbs where
stalls fill the pavements of a
tree-lined boulevard. The malls
here occupy low-rise blocks;
government offices, hotels, and
restaurants stand at the side of
the road; and shoppers chat
over a cacophony of revving
motorbikes as they stroll
towards department stores,
vape outlets, and cafés.
It’s not until I get to the far
end of Jalan Sudirman, with its
Bundaran Air Mancur fountain
encircled by ASEAN members’
flags, that the cityscape takes a
turn for the historic. South
Sumatra’s largest mosque,
Masjid Agung, is an inescapable
vision whose grounds fill an
entire block. Building began
here in 1738 and its imposing
architecture, with twin minarets,
dwarfs all around it.
Opposite, the Monpera –
a contraction of Monumen
Perjuangan Rakyat (or
People’s Struggle Monument)
– commemorates the Battle of
Five Days and Five Nights that
pitched local Sumatrans
against the waning force of
Dutch colonial authorities in
1947. It’s a gargantuan, ominous
statue that somewhat
resembles a stripped-down
Transformers figure.
Finding an opportune
moment to zigzag Frogger-style
through the oncoming traffic, I
veer towards the Musi river and
a scene as colourful as you’ll
find anywhere in Indonesia: the
16 Ilir Market, where stallholders
loudly advertise their rambutan,
fish, and fake watches as
passersby mill around under a
parade of brightly hued
shophouses. I spend only
minutes here but I have already
received the greeting “Hello,
Mister!” over ten times, as well
as numerous requests to have
photos taken with me.
A ride over the river on the
Ampera Bridge, though, is an
experience to savour. Or even
better, walking across it, which
while admittedly noisy, affords
unforgettable views of the 220
metre-long bridge itself with its
giant central tower, as well as
the multi-hued fishing boats
and riverside settlements below
(the city was once nicknamed
the Venice of Sumatra). Not for
nothing is Ampera considered
the icon of Palembang; this
monumental vertical-lift
construction, painted a vivid
red, dates back to 1965, but like
the Golden Gate Bridge of San
Francisco, which it uncannily
resembles, remains a timeless
feat of modern engineering.
Suddenly, I’m in Ulu
Seberang, the south side of the
city, and in another time and
place altogether: the tranquil
riverside neighbourhood of
Kampung Kapitan. Here, in the
traditional Chinese district of
Palembang, a group of kids
playing in a neatly kept
courtyard built around a pagoda
greet me with a wide-eyed
enthusiasm generally reserved
for visiting dignitaries. As I walk
around the square, a kindly lady
asks if I’d like to explore, free of
charge, a wooden house which
from the outside seems little
more than a faded shanty
dwelling.
Upon entering, and meeting
Tjoa Ham Hin’s resident guide, I
emerge into a wide-open space
lined with sepia photos of
former inhabitants. Circling the
building, I’m dazzled by a
brilliant crimson interior centring
on a shrine that’s laden with
candles and golden incense
bowls. In the next room,
spotless lanterns and a vintage
chandelier spotlight
a living area that’s flanked by
images of Chinese deities. The
adjacent bedroom re-creates
the sleeping arrangements of a
19th-century home, draped with
scarlet bed linen. This residence
dates back to 1850, but the
restoration work is so meticulous
and complete that it gives the
impression that the residents
only moved in last week.
Returning to the riverside, I’m
perfectly positioned to
photograph the majestic
Ampera from close quarters
before driving down another
tidy boulevard, and around a
captivating flower sculpture –
Tugu Parameswara, named
after a king who in the 14th
century ruled Singapura, the
precursor of today’s Singapore.
It forms a spectacular entrance
to Jakabaring Sport City, where
the majority of Asian Games
events are being staged.
A ride around the complex,
dominated by the Gelora
Sriwijaya Stadium, reveals a
sporting venue that could
grace any first-world city,
replete with eye-catching
modern architecture and a
beautiful man-made lake for
canoeing and rowing. The Asian
Games are a matter of significant
prestige for Indonesia. The
country is hosting the world’s
second-biggest sporting event
(after the Olympics) for the first
time in 56 years, and by all
appearances, Palembang is
more than adequately prepared.
Just in time for the sporting
feast, Jakabaring has been
linked to the airport as the
penultimate stop on the LRT, a
large-scale infrastructure
project extending 25 kilometres
through the city. The final stop,
Diners at Tugu
Ikan Belido, a
riverside seafood
restaurant in
Benteng district.
Ongah Permata Indah, brings
me to my home for the night,
Wyndham OPI. The city’s
newest and flashiest hotel
flaunts a palatial lobby,
decorated in neutral earth
tones with a 12 metre-high
ceiling and spiral stairway that is
positively dripping with bling.
A somewhat older residence
is next on my itinerary the
following morning. The name of
the 300-year-old Peranakan
house, Baba Boentjit, is familiar
to locals, yet few seem to know
exactly where it is. So I enlist the
help of a group of eager boys
(“Hello mister!”) who direct me
there for just a few thousand
Rupiah in return, and finally
come across a Kermit-green
façade on the south bank of the
Musi, hidden among a labyrinth
of ramshackle stilt houses.
The timing is fortunate:
Sunday is market day at the
house. So after an engrossing
tour of its glorious period
furnishings courtesy of guide
Adi Budirman, I’m out in the
garden watching Sumatran
dance and craft workshops,
and stocking up on pempek,
Palembang’s famous fried-fish
snack with a consistency like a
spring roll.
Back on the north bank in
the district of Benteng, another
craft and food market is in full
swing outside the sprawling
Kuto Besak fortress (1797), in
the shadow of the Ampera.
Jumping on a ferry, I’m
transported 5 kilometres
downriver to Kemaro Island, a
technicolour patch of land in
the middle of the Musi that’s
rife with legends of starcrossed
lovers and ghosts.
Its Buddhist temple’s
montage of red and yellow is a
foretaste of the main attraction,
a nine-storey pagoda (Hok
Tjiang Rio) with a golden
staircase sculpted in the shape
of roaring lions. During Chinese
festivals, Kemaro is packed with
devotees, but on this Sunday
afternoon, I spot only two other
people – a monk in the temple
and a vendor selling instant
coffee by the pagoda.
While Lake Toba remains the
principal holiday centre in
Sumatra, Palembang’s recent
upgrades seem set to usher the
city into a new era. And with its
host of hidden historical
hotspots – coupled with new
flight routes, plentiful modern
malls and even a sprinkling of
hipster cafés – there’s no
reason why this southern
capital shouldn’t emerge as the
tourist hotspot it’s always
promised to become.
A NEW YORK
design-driven, two-storey
KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN

Thanks to Hallyu (the Korean wave), Korean
fried chicken has taken the world by storm.
The crispy fried chicken comes in a variety
of flavours but by far the most well-known
is yangnyeom, where the chicken is
drenched in a sweet, spicy, tangy and
garlicky sauce. Do as the Koreans do and
order beer with your fried chicken, a
favourite pairing called chimaek, a
chicken (chikin) and beer (maekju).
KABSA
Served all over Saudi Arabia is
kabsa, a delightfully fragrant
chicken-and-rice dish.
Considered the Arab version of
Kabsa is made by simmering
the chicken in tomato-based
broth with spices. The chicken
is then removed and fried or
grilled, while the leftover stock
is used to cook the rice. The
Whole chickens are poached,
and the birds are then dipped
into an ice bath so that the skin
produces a jelly-like finish. To
spice up the dish, chicken rice
is often eaten with garlic chilli
MALAYSIA
CHICKEN RENDANG
Beloved not just in Malaysia but Singapore and Indonesia
as well, chicken rendang was the centre of controversy
when a judge deemed a Malaysian-born chef’s chicken
rendang not crispy enough on a popular cooking
competition show. There was an immediate outcry by
chicken rendang lovers everywhere – the slow-cooked
spicy chicken stew should be fork-tender, and its skin
should never be crispy. Escape #rendanggate and have
proper chicken rendang with coconut rice in Malaysia’s
national dish, nasi lemak.
Thailand
Stuffed Chicken Wings
(ปีกไก่สอดไส้)
Thai stuffed chicken wings are pretty
much a meal on their own. The flat part
of the chicken wing is deboned, and
then stuffed with a seasoned mix of
minced pork and prawns, and mung
bean noodles, before they’re fried.
Vietnam
Grilled Chicken Sandwich
(bánh mì gà nu’ó’ng)
Classic Vietnamese flavours like
lemongrass, fish sauce, and Chinese
five-spice powder are used to marinate
chicken thighs before they’re
chargrilled. The chicken is then stuffed
into a French baguette with fresh
cucumbers and pickled carrots and
radishes for a quick meal.
With a vision of improving
Singapore Facebook page via
Facebook Messenger on 2 July
2018. M.A.R.V.I.E. has serviced an
average of 1,700 queries daily, with
an average transaction time of 7
minutes and a resolution rate of
67% since its launch.
Coinciding with the one-year
anniversary of the merger of Tigerair
into Scoot, M.A.R.V.I.E. is the first
chatbot by an airline in Asia to allow
transactions, as well as responding to
customer queries. In addition to
handling queries in English,
M.A.R.V.I.E. is able to assist customers
to search for flights, display the same
fares and availability as reflected on
Scoot’s website and mobile app,
make flight bookings, and allow
payment by credit card.
M.A.R.V.I.E. was developed with the
expertise of Caravelo, a technology
company specialised in solutions for
the airline industry. “We are super
proud of M.A.R.V.I.E. and our longstanding
partnership with Scoot,” said
Caravelo’s Chief Commercial Officer,
Mr Jonathan Newman. “For the last
two years, we’ve been pioneering
conversational commerce in the airline
industry and Scoot’s goals of meeting
customers where they are and making
travel planning simpler resonate with
our view of digital servicing and retail.
It’s great that Scoot and M.A.R.V.I.E. are
setting the standard in Asia.”
In the future, M.A.R.V.I.E. can accept
promo codes, assist customers to
manage and make changes to their
bookings, purchase ancillary products
such as preferred seats and travel
insurance, make interline reservations
involving flights by partner airlines, and
accept more payment modes. There are
also plans to make M.A.R.V.I.E. available
in more languages and on more
platforms, including Scoot’s website.
THE
SCOOT
LIFE
Recently, our three Cs
(CEO, CCO & COO) were
put through their paces
as a Scootee to connect a
little more with fellow
Scootees and better
understand the
challenges they face on a
daily basis. In this issue,
we feature Chee Keong
- Scoot’s very own COO,
as he experiences life as
a Scootee.
“THERE’S NO BETTER WAY
FOR ME TO APPRECIATE
OUR SCOOTEES’ EFFORTS
THAN TO SIMPLY DO
THINGS RIGHT AND DO
RIGHT THING.”
After witnessing Lik Hsin’s Scootee
attempt, we had calls from the
other two Cs to schedule them on
the next Scootitude flights quickly.
We couldn’t leave them out of the
fun! Aside from that, not many
Scootees get the opportunity to
work closely with Chee Keong
(CK), so they were all nervous
before meeting him. Well, they
didn’t realise how much of a joker
he is! Here’s his account:
THE SCOOT SCOOP
As a Chief Operations Officer (COO),
I focus on the operational aspects of
the organization namely the Flight
Crew (also commonly known as
Pilots), Safety, Quality, Engineering,
Ground Operations, and Operations
Control. Everyone under my care
ensures that our operational
aspects are well executed. Taking up
this challenge to experience life as a
Scootee was a no-brainer, and
there’s no way I’m going to miss out
on all the fun!
“For the record, I’m
aiming to top Lik
Hsin’s rating. Placing
second isn’t an
option - chiong
arrrhhhhh!!”
The crew was adamant to give
no special treatment for me, so
I was tasked to study the same
manuals and attend the same
briefings as Lik Hsin did. Safety
is of paramount importance,
and it’s reassuring to know that
all the high-level protocols and
safety procedures are adhered.
After the initial
introductions and crew
briefing, we walked to the
gate together, and I noted
that I was the only “thorn”
amongst the crew of eight
other gorgeous ladies! To
break the ice, I managed to
sneak away for a minute to
buy some treats (curry puffs)
to win brownie points so the
crew wouldn’t tekan (abuse)
me during the flight.
D-Day
The cleaning crew
just finished up
their work as we
took over the
aircraft, so we
began preparing
the cabin for our
passengers. Like
clockwork, everything
was happening so fast, but
I was determined to be as
helpful as possible. Finally, with
the aircraft fueled, cargo loaded,
and catering uplifted, I was ready
to greet passengers at the door!
The entire onboarding
experience was quickly over, and
I could only recollect that I had
to keep smiling and help as
much as possible to settle
everyone. My role primarily
requires me to oversee
everything behind the scenes, so
a customer-facing experience in
such a manner is a new
perspective for me. Challenge
accepted!
The whole crew kicks into
action the moment the aircraft’s
seat belt sign is switched off.
Each member of the
crew already has
predetermined
roles for the
flight, and the
team chemistry
adds to the
slick service
that we’re all so
proud of here at
Scoot. My
assigned duty: to
heat up the preordered
meals, and to
serve them to the correct
passengers. At the micro level,
this is where execution counts!
There can be no mistake as
each meal must reach the tray
table of each designated
passenger.
Of course, I had done my
homework. Toilets needed
cleaning, so I took one for the
team by cleaning all four of
them! It was a very
fulfilling experience
that added
colours to the
job of being a
Scootee. It
really
heightened my
senses.
POST-FLIGHT
After a quick rest, we headed
out together to sample some
of the tastiest burgers and
beautifully roasted coffee in
Melbourne. Working
alongside the crew for a full
day provided an opportunity
for me to appreciate the
challenges that came with
their jobs and with it, new
respect. Experiences like
these are key to understanding
the fundamental aspects of
an airline – and there’s no
better way for me to
appreciate our Scootees’
efforts than to simply do
things right and do right thing.
For an airline to look after
our passengers, we need to
look after everyone in the
aviation industry, especially
so for our front-line staff
who are required to be
nimble, professional
and at the same
time, be the ever
cheerful and
friendly
ambassadors
of Scoot!
I had done better
than Lik Hsin.”
CHOYA
100% All-natural
Japanese Liqueur
Founded in 1914, CHOYA started out
as a small winery in Osaka before
shifting their business direction
towards producing only Umeshu
– a traditional Japanese liqueur
made from the ume fruit – in 1959.
Since then, this known leading
producer of Umeshu has been
supplying Japanese families at
home with special ume fruit liqueur
for generations.
The CHOYA Promise
Each bottle of CHOYA Umeshu is
crafted by local farmers who
ensure that the aromatic and
perfectly ripened ume fruits used
during production are grown in
high-quality soil. Moreover, all
products contain large quantities
of ume fruits, with rich flavours
fully drawn out – along with
organic acids that are known to be
gentle and beneficial to the body.
Age of Glory
Ageing is the key to producing premium
CHOYA Umeshu. And because only
simple ingredients such as ume fruits,
sugar, and alcohol are used, the Umeshu
must take place under a rigorous,
controlled environment in order achieve
its ideal flavour. Due to this requirement,
specially designed Umeshu storage tanks
are utilised in order to protect the liqueur
from external influences such as light,
temperature, and air. These customised
containers also anchor the meticulously
deliberate process called still ageing. The
result? A perfectly unprocessed Umeshu
without additives or preservatives.
CHOYA Gold Edition
Made with 100% nanko-ume fruits that
are meticulously selected from the region
of Kishu in Wakayama Prefecture and
French brandy, the CHOYA Gold Edition
possesses spectacular flavours and a
signature deep amber hue with glowing
gold flakes. Indeed, the CHOYA Gold
Edition’s luxurious taste and elegant
aroma always call for a celebration.
YOUR SAFETY
& COMFORT
THE SCOOT SCOOP
SCOOT
SECURITY
POLICY
Scoot reserves
the right to deny
boarding to
passengers who
are inappropriate
on board or
on the ground
with their
comments or
behaviour.
KEEP MOVING
Maintaining good blood
circulation and muscle relaxation
goes a long way towards avoiding
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a painful
condition that arises when a clot obstructs
blood flow in a vein. Though it’s a rare
occurrence, don’t take any chances,
especially during long flights. During your
flight, move your legs and feet for a few
minutes every hour. Stand up and stretch
your arms and chest.
CABIN PRESSURE
Changes in cabin pressure during the flight
may cause discomfort in the ears. Relieve
ear pain by swallowing hard, holding your
nose and gently breathing out with your
mouth closed. If travelling with toddlers or
infants, give them a sweet or feed them a
snack when cabin pressure rises,
particularly during take-off.
SAFETY FIRST. NO COMPROMISE
Your safety is our number-one priority, but you have a part to play
too. The cabin crew’s safety briefing and the safety information
card in your seat pocket provide crucial details in the unlikely event
of an emergency. Always pay attention to these details on each
flight you take because information can vary, such as the location
of emergency exits and equipment. If in doubt about anything
safety-related, ask. Our crew are specially trained to ensure your
safety at all times. Regardless of the situation, safety must never
be compromised, so follow the crew’s safety instructions at all
times. It is an offence to refuse to obey any lawful command
of the captain or cabin crew.
CABIN CLEANLINESS
Please do not place rubbish or other discarded items in your
seat pocket or on the floor. Trash bins and napkins are located in the
lavatories. Unless you have strict dietary requirements not catered
for on board our flights, please refrain from bringing outside food
and beverages into the aircraft. We have a delicious array of meals
and snacks on offer, including tempting vegetarian and halal options.
PORTABLE
ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
You may use your
lightweight portable
electronic devices
(“Flight Safe” mode on
A320 /”Transmitting”
mode on B787) unless advised by crew.
Personal headphones or earphones must be
unplugged and not in use when the aircraft is
taxiing, taking off and landing. Laptops may
not be used and must be properly stowed
when the aircraft is taking off, landing and on
the ground. If you’re boarding or disembarking
the aircraft on the tarmac, you must switch off
your devices. At any point of the flight, the
captain or cabin crew may advise you to turn
off your devices.
STAY HYDRATED
Low humidity in the cabin
can cause your body to
dehydrate. Drink lots of
non-alcoholic beverages
during your flight and
apply moisturiser liberally
to combat dryness. Consume alcohol in
moderation while on board as high altitude
intensifies its effects. The consumption of any
alcoholic beverage not purchased from the
inflight menu is not permitted.
DON’T SMOKE
Scoot enforces a strict no-smoking policy on all
its flights, which also prohibits the use of
e-cigarettes. Please refrain from lighting up in
the lavatories, as doing so could endanger the
safety of your fellow guests or disrupt the flight.
