CEO, Scoot
Hello, and Welcome Aboard!
Scoot now operates three-timesweekly,
non-stop return services via
Singapore to Nanchang in China’s Jiangxi
province – the newest destination in our
network! Bringing our global network to
a total of 66 destinations across 18
countries/territories, Nanchang is a
well-connected city that pulls together
the eastern and southern parts of China
via its extensive railway hub and houses
a variety of industries ranging from
agriculture to pharmaceuticals. There
are plenty of spots to relax in this
bustling city too – travellers can choose
to escape on a soothing bamboo raft
ride at Mount Longhu, or slowly savour
the city landscape perched upon the
Star of Nanchang, a giant 525 feet tall
Ferris wheel.
While we Scoot around the world,
Singapore is still our main hub, and in
conjunction with National Day
celebrations this month, we are
delighted to introduce some National
Day Specials on our latest edition of
ScooTV*, our in-flight streaming
favourites like The Noose and Jimami
Tofu on your device while tucking into a
selected routes, while stocks last) for an
HACKABLES
WORDS JUSTINE MONDONEDO PHOTOGRAPHY EVOLVE MMA SINGAPORE
WHEN YOU’RE
CHOKED FROM
THE FRONT...
• Fight the instinct to pull away
from the attacker’s hold when
he or she goes for your neck
and uses hands to choke you.
• Slip both of your arms in
between his and grab his
head with your hands to lock
your hold.
• Pull the attacker towards you
while rotating your body,
positioning yourself to throw
him to the ground.
• Lower your hips underneath
his and pull him forward and
then toss him over your hip.
• When he falls to the ground,
use this opportunity to punch,
kick, or run away.
WHEN YOUR SHIRT
IS GRABBED...
• Step forward and lower
yourself to shift your weight.
This should stabilise your
weight, making it harder for
your attacker to pull you off
balance.
• After making sure that your
balance is stable, reach over
around your attacker’s arm and grip
it with your hands together,
effectively trapping his arm under
your armpit.
• Pull your clasped hands upwards
and then extend the assailant’s
elbow to lock his arms and keep
him in place. Doing so will give you
enough time to make an escape
move or shout for help.
WHEN YOU’RE
CHOKED WITH
YOUR HEAD DOWN...
• Reach for the assailant’s face
using the hand closest to it and
then cup his chin.
• In one swift motion, force the
attacker’s chin upward and then
use your other hand to push
against his hip to free yourself.
WHEN YOU’RE
CHOKED FROM
BEHIND...
• Pivot away from the attacker
using your leg that is wrapped
around him as the swivel point.
• Rotate approximately 180
degrees to loosen the choke and
then pull him forward and down,
tripping him over your leg that was
wrapped around his.
• Alternatively, grab the arm
(using both of your hands) that is
choking you and pull it down to
relieve the pressure.
• Wrap one of your legs around
the attacker
DANGER THINGS
Steer clear of mortal peril
way before it gets to you.
Open streets only
Avoid walking through
dimly-lit places and back
crowded areas, but watch
out for pickpockets.
Anti-theft secret
gets stolen.
Life matters first
Down a spiral staircase, in
the underbelly of OIi
Lemke’s sprawling Berlin
brewery, is a room he refers to as
“the lab.” Delicate rows of test
tubes and flasks line the walls,
housing yeast at various stages
of cultivation.
“This is the heart of the entire
operation,” Oli declares proudly.
“The yeast is what gives our beer
its unique taste. Other breweries
will buy pre-made yeast
elsewhere, but it’s vital to us that
we work with our own.”
As the Founder of Brauhaus
Lemke – one of few craft
breweries in Berlin producing
everything in-house – it’s not only
Oli’s job to ensure the quality of
the beer, but a passion that took
hold from a young age.
24 SCOOT

PHOTOGRAPHY BECCA CRAWFORD
“As a teenager, I quit my
business administration degree
after three semesters and
turned to brew school. I’ve
always been fascinated with
biology,” Oli shares. “To me,
brewing is a mixture of
craftsmanship, creativity, and
science – if all three come
together you are going to end up
with really great beers.”
In 1999, after stints working in
Japan and Venezuela, Oli
rounded up a few friends and
got to work transforming a
derelict S-Bahn unit at the
Hackeschen Markt into a
brewery. On 21 November 1999,
his dream became a reality:
Brauhaus Lemke opened for the
very first time.
Today, Brauhaus Lemke am
Hackeschen Markt has more
than doubled in size; a
labyrinth of pumps,
fermenting tanks, and bottling
machines are ensconced
beneath the red brick arches
of the former S-Bahn station in
Berlin’s Mitte area. His brewing
empire now extends to
Brauhaus Lemke am Alex and
am Schloss, producing more
than 12 styles of beer.
Oli heads up a team of nine
brewer engineers, brewmasters,
and brewers, who must have a
formal education or an
apprenticeship to join the ranks.
As Oli puts it, “Right now with the
craft movement, a lot of people
think that everyone is a brewer.
But to maintain quality, you need
official training.”
To the uninitiated, the term
“brewer engineer” might sound
like a little, well, overengineered.
But a mere five
minutes into a tour of Brauhaus
Lemke, any misconceptions
fade away. Creating a new batch
of beer can take up to 100 brews
and multiple years to get right.
The site itself requires constant
maintenance, such as the
recent nine-month excavation
project to lower the ground,
making way for a state-of-theart
brewhouse.
Oli walks us through his
“newest invention”, the new
brewhouse; a web of metallic
pipes engulfed in warm air that
smells of sweet, sugary malt.
We meet Victor, the guy who is
responsible for boiling the malt
and coaxing the liquid through
each step with scientific
precision.
“Aren’t the machines
beautiful?” Oli quips, with the
satisfied grin of someone who
so clearly loves what they do.
“This is where the whole process
starts. With this brewhouse, we
produce up to six batches a day
in a 24-hour shift. Each batch is
3,500 litres. This machine will
ten-fold our capacity.”
The excess spelt grain from
the brewhouse is picked up by
local farmers and fed to cows or
pigs; a small but important cog in
this well-oiled machine.
Under the next archway,
Freddy, a tattooed brewer
apprentice, is overseeing the
fermentation and washing the
kegs, and in the following, Jens,
the full-time welder, is kept busy
repairing pipes and
reconfiguring equipment.
To a gentle soundtrack of
clinking bottles and whirring
machinery, staff are busy filling
and labelling beers, the final
stage before they are boxed
up for sale. “1,900 bottles an
hour go through this system.
That’s very little – in a big
brewery, they would be
making 30,000 bottles per
hour. It works for us.”
Oli holds up the fruit of
his labour, a freshly
bottled and labelled
beer, the Berliner
Weisse. “We do a lot of
research with the
Technical University of
Berlin (TU), and we recently
collaborated with them to
bring the Berliner Weisse back
to life. It was introduced to
Germany from France in the
1600s but died away.”
We stroll over to the
Brauhaus Lemke am Alex, a
cavernous restaurant and
brewery directly across from
Alexanderplatz, which holds a
special significance for
Berliners. “Every East German
knows of this place. They used
to kid that it was the only place
where they could get bananas
before the wall fell.”
Here they serve not only
Lemke’s beers but a range of
hand-picked barrel-aged beers
from around the world, in a
move designed to educate
people about the artistry of craft
beer as distinct from large
commercial brewers.
“Beer has always been a big
part of the German culture, but
over time it’s become a
commodity. It’s ridiculous how
beer is priced in supermarkets.
Eight euros for a case of beer
With more
than 1,000
breweries
across the
country, beer
is an
important
part of
German
culture,
embraced by
locals and
tourists.
wouldn’t even cover our costs.
It’s cheaper than water.”
We navigate back along the
walkway past the S-Bahn
archways, a space brought to
life with murals by artists at TU
University, and where many an
after-work brew is shared on
long bench tables.
After a near two hour tour,
we settle into the leafy,
cobblestoned courtyard at
Hackeschen Markt with a tasting
board of beer and some hearty
German fare: schnitzel, pork
knuckle and currywurst. You
would think that Oli would tire of
talking about beer at this point,
but that’s not the case.
Brauhaus Lemke’s
restaurants serve traditional
German fare including
schnitzel, pork knuckle, and
currywurst.
“Some craft brewers try to
shock you with their beer, but
that’s not our style. Our aim is to
make you say ‘I want another
one of those.’ We don’t just
want to appeal to tourists, or
hipsters, or traditional beer
drinkers. We make beer for
everyone.”
After talking us through the
beers, from a Bohemian Pilsner
to an India Pale Ale, Oli
excuses himself to get back to
work: emails, meetings, fixing
machinery, quality checks. The
brewery is a complex web of
moving parts that never sleeps.
“I don’t have a normal day at
work – every day is different.
I’m not complaining,” he says.
“You’d better not complain;
this place is your second
home,” I tell him.
“No,” he replies, “it’s my first.”
Bali makes for an alluring
proposition. “We came to Bali
A PLATFORM FOR
YOUNG VOICES
“Street art is the universal
language of young people.
Young artists try to express
themselves differently, and
there are no rules except one:
be original,” says artist Trang
Suby. He would know: the
France-born artist began
doing graffiti at age 12. He kept
his passion for street art when
he moved to Ho Chi Minh and
had seen the local scene
evolve firsthand. The frenetic
city centre that is District 1 may
soon be known for more than
its crazy traffic, food, and
architecture as new street art
pops up all the time. “Street
art is the latest big art
movement, whether people
like it or not,” he adds. “You
don’t need knowledge or a
pass to be amazed by it. It is
always changing, always a
surprise. It can bring you to
places you would never have
been if you stuck to your
travel guide. You will meet
different people, maybe get
to know the real Vietnam.”
has grown as murals sprout
in plain sight across
neighbourhoods like SoHo
and events like the annual
HKwalls Street Art and Mural
says Jean de Dieu. “It’s
interesting to see how
murals interact with their
surroundings and bring
emotions to unsuspecting
passers-by. Street art can
be painted over or
destroyed any day, so there
is an element of urgency in
viewing it.” It’s a sentiment
the team at HKwalls agrees
with: “A lot of what makes
street art great is the desire
to find the art, see it in
person, and get photos
before it vanishes like all
street art eventually does.”
A CITY MADE MORE
“The biggest gallery in the world
is the streets,” declares Janno
Gonzales, one of the founders
of Gerilya, an art collective
established by three university
students in 2008. A decade
ago, Manila’s “gallery” was host
mostly to graffiti. Now, murals,
stickers, stencilling, and even
the occasional yarn-bomb
have exploded across the
metro: taking a stand on
politics or national identity,
decorating upscale
neighbourhoods, and
expressing the everyman’s
sentiments. “Manila is a
the first British settlement in
Southeast Asia. In 2012,
Lithuanian artist Ernest
Zacharevic painted a series of
murals as part of the annual
George Town Festival. The
most iconic piece, “Little
draw art enthusiasts today.
In squeaky-clean Singapore,
street art is finding a home
banquets that is a feature
cuisine in Jiangxi Province.
Later, the atmosphere will be
dialled up a notch as the city’s
party people migrate to the bars
and clubs on Ming De Lu Street
and Fuzhou Road – two of the
most buzzing spots to dance
and imbibe the night away.
Nobody would call this
release of energy at the end of
the working week subdued; but
it is positively cathedral-like
compared to the unholy racket
emanating from the downtown
rehearsal space where local
heroes Explosicum are putting
some new material through its
deafening paces.
One of China’s leading thrash
metal outfits, Explosicum have
released three studio albums
and starred at music festivals
around the Middle Kingdom
and in Asia. And as they crank
into crowd-pleasers from their
latest release, Living’s Deal, it’s
easy to see why they have
grabbed the attention of
China’s ever-expanding
contingent of metalheads.
Songs such as “Endless
Killing”, “Kill Them All” and “Die
For Thrash” pass by in rapid-fire
succession: atonal melodies,
grunted lyrics, and shredding
lead guitar producing a sound
that is horrific for cosy
singalongs but perfect for
heaving mosh pits populated
by angst-ridden Asian youths.
Their brutal power and
breakneck pace of their songs
are clearly influenced by US
thrash metal Godheads such as
Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.
The artwork on their album
sleeves, meanwhile, features
familiar tropes of the genre such
as gore, lighting and skulls.
But Explosicum is a product
of their surroundings as much
as they are beholden to the
heroes of the thrash scene.
For example, the sleeve art on
their second album, Raging
Living, shows tattered posters
of a faceless Mao Zedong on a
wall while a figure bearing a
strong likeness to China’s
one-time leader is shown
being swept away on a river of
molten lava.
The growing popularity of
the Nanchang band is
indicative of the diversification
of the music scene in China.
From major metropolitan
centres such as Beijing,
Shanghai, and Guangzhou to
the second tier (but still
massive) cities such as Harbin,
Kunming, and Sanya, an
eclectic spread of genres
ranging from all stripes of metal
to hip-hop, dream pop and
indie-folk are breaking through
and thriving.
Indeed, Nanchang is famous
for its vital role in the country’s
recent history. The Nanchang
Uprising in 1927 is recognised
as the official launching point
of the Chinese revolution, and
the city was bestowed the
name “City of Heroes” by the
politburo as a reward.
These days, Nanchang’s
contingent of highly respected
musicians are among those
bolstering the veracity of that
forceful moniker.
Particularly strong is the city’s
metal scene. Explosicum is
spreading its appeal to metal
fans around the region with
recent appearances at festivals
in Osaka in Japan and Vientiane
in Laos.
After years of touring, the
four-piece is now widely
accepted as one of the premier
thrash acts in the region. It’s no
surprise then that other
Nanchang metal outfits are
intent in emulating their success.
Currently making waves in the
local live scene are Dopamine
and Be Persecuted. Unlike
Explosicum, whose music speeds
along like one of China’s bullet
trains, the two bands major in
more ponderous sounds.
Both have sizeable
followings in Nanchang and their
recorded output – especially
Dopamine, who lighten the
mood by introducing different
textures to their music – has
grabbed the attention of music
Nanchang’s lively bar
the hip 699 Art Culture
Founder Deng (short for
importing black metal CDs from
overseas to sell them in
Nanchang. A member of Be
Persecuted, Deng used his
new label as a way of releasing
the band’s first demo in 2006.
The recording gained traction
internationally, and soon metal
bands from around the world
were contacting Deng with a
view to having their music
distributed in China.
Since then, Pest Productions
has gone from strength to
strength; it has garnered a
reputation for openmindedness
with its acts
spanning a variety of metal
subgenres. The label celebrated
its ten-year anniversary in 2016
with major events in Beijing and
Shanghai, and aims to become
“Asia’s most famous underground
metal label.” Not bad for an
operation that started out in
Deng’s tiny college dorm.
“We are not in it for the
money,” says Deng. “But we still
have plenty of ambition. Our
intention from the start has
been to invest in human capital.
To be a vehicle for bands to
develop and better themselves.”
MORE THAN JUST
METAL
While the Nanchang metal scene
is prominent, there’s more to the
city’s music landscape than
brooding lyrics and fiddly guitar
solos. Indeed, there are numerous
other styles to investigate. Like
metal, hip-hop is on the rise in
China, and Nanchang’s
contributions include Ocase,
California-based Lei Lei, and SJoK,
the founder of local hip-hop
collective GanGanG.
Other notable players on the
alternative music scene range
from Wang Xu, an artist/
experimental musician and
co-founder of acclaimed
Nanchang gallery Snarte Space –
to Jingdezhen Renaissance, who
specialises in a mellow, delicate
style of folk-influenced indie.
Back in the centre of Nanchang,
Explosicum is winding down at
rehearsal. As Friday night wears
on, many locals will make their way
to karaoke to sing along to
Mandopop and slushy ballads.
Few will be trying their hand at
“Endless Killing” or any other
Explosicum songs. Nevertheless,
the presence of such radical
elements makes Nanchang febrile
territory for any musical explorer.
in Greece (mainly due to
it doesn’t mean that its sister
island Mykonos should be
swept under your radar.
Located some 180 kilometres
southeast from the Greek
capital of Athens, Mykonos is
a town bursting with colourful
exuberance – a juxtaposition
from the single-toned
whitewashed buildings that
Greece is synonymous with.
From what I gathered via
presumptions and minimal
research, I initially expected
rowdy youths, a bustling
nightlife, and luxury
boutiques around every
corner. I mean, the island
does play second home to
Hollywood A-listers like
Leonardo DiCaprio and
Lindsay Lohan for summer
escapes, after all. But as I
would soon realise, Mykonos
doesn’t always take
precedence over the lifestyles
of the rich and famous, as I
set forth to discover sites that
highlight different aspects of
the astonishing isle.
LITTLE VENICE
Upon hitting the town centre,
the quaint storefronts instantly
beckoned me for a stroll along
its grey street pavements. Led
by an excellent guide who was
eager to share her wealth of
knowledge about her
hometown with us, I followed
and listened intently to every
impassioned detail she
imparted along the way. Our
casual paces ultimately brought
us to Little Venice, a picturesque
corner to the southwest of the
island lined with restaurants
and bars that overlook the
waters. The unrivalled views
while dining here make for
some postcard-worthy
snapshots and memories,
especially when
complemented by the golden
hour of sunset.
As I turned my gaze towards
demanded attention away from
the deep blue sky and sea.
PANAGIA
PARAPORTIANI
After absorbing one breathtaking
sight after the other, we
ventured to the neighbourhood
of Kastro for what was possibly
the whitest building I’ve ever
seen. Kept extremely minimal
with the entire structure painted
in Greece’s signature white –
sans the entranceway, a scatter
of windows, and the overhanging
bell – the construction of
Panagia Paraportiani is an
architectural dream. I couldn’t
stop marvelling at how the
archways and curvature of the
building’s exterior gleamed
with a majestic glow beneath
the afternoon sun, while also
noting how the five churches
within seamlessly marry
together as one.
ANO MERA
The next day saw me ditch the
surrounds of buildings for a
taste of the rural side of
Mykonos. Ano Mera is a village
that sits about eight kilometres
from the town centre and
features the enviable
combination of lush vineyards
and farms while maintaining
close proximity to the
beach. The best
Ano Mera is with
area thanks to experienced
guide Dimitra. Despite strong
winds threatening to pause my
cycle up some fairly steep
slopes on the way to the pit stop
of Fokos Beach, it was nothing
that sheer determination
couldn’t overcome. I’m grateful
I did too, for the serenity of
having a bite amidst the
panoramic views of untouched
nature is not something I’ll
DELOS ISLAND
While there is already plenty to
the intricate history of the
well-preserved holy ground.
My guide, Amaryllis, skillfully
painted the mythological
history through her words as
we combed through different
landmarks together. Delos first
appeared to the goddess
Leto, and eventually
became the birthplace of
her twins Apollo and
Artemis. From the mosaic
tiles at the House of
Dionysus to the royal statues
at The Terrace of the Lions,
every advancing step took
us further back in time to
appreciate present day even
more. And thanks to
Amaryllis’ expertise, we even
got to experience Delos’
grandeur from unique
vantage points, before
According to a spokesperson
from Singapore’s National Arts
Council, the primary objective of
the Busking Scheme when it was
introduced in 1997 was to
provide engagement
opportunities for hobbyists.
More importantly, it was meant
to be a platform for emerging
and established artists to
interact with street audiences
through their creative
expressions.
Jonathan Goh and Edwin
Ong, who make up the circus
comedy street performance duo
The Annoying Brothers, is a
testament to the Scheme’s
success. To them, they agree
that busking in Singapore has
gained greater public visibility,
acceptance, and appreciation in
the past decade.
“Busking makes art more
accessible to the masses which,
in turn, brings life and vibrancy to
an otherwise quiet street,”
Jonathan says. “Moreover, street
performing helps showcase the
many talents hidden around
Singapore.”
He adds, “As performance
artists, we are grateful for the
freedom to choose when,
where, and how we like to busk.
The intimate space we create for
our audience during our shows
is an experience we won’t trade
for anything else in the world.”
While there’s a lot of wriggle
room for creative liberty,
Jonathan doesn’t shy away from
sharing the challenges that
come with performing on the
streets, saying “if it rains, we have
to wait until it stops before we
Fri-Sat (8 p.m.)
Aside from being at the mercy
of the weather conditions, the
young entertainer notes that the
most challenging aspect of
busking is keeping the audience
interested enough for them to
not walk away. Plus, they have to
think of innovative ideas and up
their skills constantly to maintain
a watcher’s attention.
When Dave Tai isn’t
crafting catchy slogans as
a copy-based creative for
big brands, he writes
haiku for strangers. “I
started busking in 2016
because I had a
Remington typewriter
lying around at home and
couldn’t quite figure out
what to do with it,” he
busking scene
indefinitely, Dave now
brings his art to local
Annoying Brothers’ first-ever
busking session, Jonathan recalls
that while it was a “disaster,” the
experience was a huge learning
point for the pair. “Five minutes
into our show, there was no one
left watching us.”
“We were so demoralised by
the negative reception that it
took us more than three hours
to muster up the courage to
perform a second set which,
thankfully, went so much better
this time!” he says triumphantly.
“Our spectators are different
from the audience in paid
shows,” Jonathan shares
matter-of-factly. “Busking
audiences can walk away
anytime they want, while
theatregoers are committed to
finishing a show they spent
good money on no matter how
boring the performance is.”
IN THE NAME OF
LOVE (AND OTHER
THINGS)
When acoustic guitar player
and singer Muhammad Firdaus
(stage name Fyrdauz Macbeth)
started his busking journey in
early 2016, he propped up a
board beside him that read: I
busk to make the world a
better place. To this day, his
love for sharing his music with
the public and using it to make
a positive impact remains his
top motivations.
“Singapore is a unique
country with people from
different walks of life, and I
believe that music can inspire
people in one way or another,”
the talented male crooner
says. “I have received
Like Firdaus, female singersongwriter
shares Marian, who is set to
THALI
Use fingers only.
THALI
When it comes to curry, it’s
best to start from the source.
India has a motley of curries
available from smoky tikka
masala, to buttery korma, and
hot and spicy vindaloo. For
those who want to try a little
bit of everything, ordering a
thali is your best bet. Thali is a
set meal that is served on a
silver platter, and comes with a
few different curry sides plus a
helping of rice or Indian
flatbread. While thali can be
found all over India, the ones
in Bengaluru are quite colossal
and are typically paired with 10
to 15 side dishes.
It’s tempting to pour all
the curries onto your rice
douse them one mouthful
at a time.
Progress properly.
Begin with the vegetable
dishes, followed by
from turkey berries and
KARĒ PAN (カレーパン)
Take a beloved home stew and put it in
an edible to-go package – that’s what
you get with karē pan. First created in
1927, the simple Japanese bread bun is a
meal on its own, especially for busy
Tokyo-ians who have little time to stop
work to eat. Karē pan is filled with
Japanese-style curry, which is slightly
sweet and not as spicy as an Indian-style
curry. The bread bun is then coated in
panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) and
deep-fried, resulting in a crispy-shelled
bun with a soft and fluffy interior.
White is not a colour anyone
would expect curry to be, but
in Penang, Malaysia, this
colourless food is a favourite of
locals. The dish starts out with
a white soup base – a savoury
blend of coconut milk and
chicken broth flavoured with
curry and pandan leaves. The spice comes
from the curry paste that is added to the
soup after the dish is served, and is made
with shallots, garlic, chillies, galangal,
lemongrass, candlenut, curry powder and
belachan (fermented shrimp paste). Add
more if you like heat, or just a bit if you’re still
getting used to chillies.
CURRYWURST
Germany’s capital has always branded
itself as “proudly strange” for its openmindedness
to experimentation, which is
probably why currywurst is touted as the
“most Berlin dish of all” for its unusual
pairing of ketchup and curry powder. Born
out of the kitchen of a resourceful housewife
who traded spirits with British soldiers for
ketchup and curry powder, this iconic
street food is a simple one that can be
easily replicated at home – slice up a
grilled German sausage and serve with a
ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, and a
sprinkling of curry powder.
SHRIMP CURRY
Inspired by Japanese curry
from Hawai’i’s large East Asian
population, shrimp curry is
classic comfort food from the
Aloha State. Unlike many other
curries where everything is
thrown into a pot to stew,
shrimps are first pan-fried until a
lovely seared crust is formed
before they are added to the
curry. Another unexpected twist
is the garnishes used; shrimp
curry is given the Hawaiian
tropical treatment with the
addition of chopped nuts, raisins,
fruit chutney, shredded coconut,
and sliced fresh banana.
CHULIA STREET
One of George Town’s oldest roads is
Chulia Street, a focal point for throwback
thrills in one of Asia’s most nostalgic
cities. Here’s the place to get your fill of
local gut-pleasers like beef noodles,
char kway teow, and assam laksa
(Malaysian fish-based rice noodle
soup). Chulia Street also features a host
of flea markets and antique stores
selling handicraft items.
remained when Seven Terraces
was completed in 2012.
CHINAHOUSE
At some point, every visitor to George
Town ends up in ChinaHouse, and it’s
not hard to see why. Not only is this the
longest shophouse in the city,
occupying an entire block in the historic
centre – it takes several minutes to walk
from the front (Lebuh Pantai) to back
(Lebuh Victoria) – but it’s also Penang’s
most versatile public space. A mixedconcept
leisure-time mega-market, it
comprises no fewer than 14 cafés,
eateries, wineries, contemporary
galleries, shops, and multi-purpose
creative spaces.
books and magazines on art, design,
architecture, and cooking for sale.
George Town is a goldmine for
offbeat artisan boutiques, and
technicolour – everything from
the façades of houses in
Scoot is proud to announce that
Singapore’s favourite budget
As the capital city of Jiangxi
freshwater lake in China, Poyang
Lake, and the Meiling National
Celebrating the launch of the
Singapore-Nanchang direct flight,
TR112 passengers were invited to
and sees over 110 services per
THE
SCOOT
LIFE
THE SCOOT SCOOP
Recently, our three Cs
(CEO, CCO & COO)
were put through their
paces as a Scootee to
connect more with
fellow Scootees and
better understand the
challenges they face on
a daily basis. In this
issue, we feature
Lik Hsin – Scoot’s very
own CEO – as he
experiences life as
a Scootee.
This has been a long time coming,
but when we first heard about
Lik Hsin’s interest to try being in
the shoes of a Scootee, we quietly
began to put the plan into action
and got hold of some uniforms for
him to try on for size (he is a little
wider than we thought!). Here’s his
detailed account during his first
day as a Scootee!
D-Day
-
My calendar’s blocked off for two
days, and I am secretly rostered
on two flights as a Scootee. Only
the project team’s in the loop at
this point; there’s no turning
back. Our destination? Osaka!
D-Day
-1
The midnight oil’s burning,
and I’ve got a stack of
manuals to go through before
the flight. You’d be amazed
at how much our crew have
to know, but I understand
that knowledge and training
are the only ways to ensure
crew and passenger safety
while we keep up service
standards. Even though I am
only an extra crew and not
manning a full position, I still
have to be knowledgeable
about standard operating
systems and not trip up the
rest of the team.
“I WON’T KNOW WHAT’S
THE BEST METHOD TO LEAD
MY TEAM UNLESS I GET MY
HANDS DIRTY.”
D-Day
It’s showtime! Everyone meets
up at the briefing centre before
the flight, and for the first time,
they are told that I am joining
them onboard. Sure, some
nervousness is there, but smiles
break out as I share with them
what my expertise is – and
that’s cleaning toilets! The
briefing takes place as usual,
then off to the aircraft we go.
While making our way through
the passenger terminal, I
understand for the first time
why the uniform is always worn
with pride; your uniform is the
ultimate symbol of who you
are and what you do.
We meet the pilots for a
quick brief, and then prep the
cabin before boarding
commences. It’s not always
easy to maintain a sunny
personality 24/7 for hundreds
of people, but our crew
manages to do it every day.
Shortly after takeoff and
the seatbelt signs have been
turned off, we get to work.
Food is heated and served;
carts are rolled out. While I
didn’t make a single F&B sale
on one trip down the aisle, my
fellow Scootees kindly offered
consolation and
encouragement. Also, I’ve
come to know that serving
meals and drinks is a
balancing act – literally!
Thankfully, there were no
spillages under my watch. As
our flight nears to descent,
trash was mounting, and
toilets needed cleaning. I’ve
come to know that the crew
uses Post-it notes to record
who has cleaned the toilets
and during what times, so I
jotted down my name as
instructed. Time flies when
you’re having fun, and before
you know it, we are
approaching Osaka, so we
ensure the passengers are
buckled in for landing.
POST-FLIGHT
The crew and I enjoyed some
Japanese food once we
settled in Osaka. And no,
we didn’t forget to bring
home a bottle of sake
(Japanese rice wine). The
camaraderie is strong, and I
am reminded once again
that a company’s success
depends on their people.
RATING:
Competent
“I have done better
on in-flight sales
since then – I even
sold some dutyfree
liquor and
perfume on a
recent trip!”
YOUR SAFETY
& COMFORT
SCOOT
SECURITY
POLICY
Scoot reserves
the right to deny
boarding to
passengers who
are inappropriate
on board or
on the ground
with their
comments or
behaviour.
KEEP MOVING
Maintaining good blood
circulation and muscle relaxation
goes a long way towards avoiding
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a painful
condition that arises when a clot obstructs
blood flow in a vein. Though it’s a rare
occurrence, don’t take any chances,
especially during long flights. During your
flight, move your legs and feet for a few
minutes every hour. Stand up and stretch
your arms and chest.
CABIN PRESSURE
Changes in cabin pressure during the flight
may cause discomfort in the ears. Relieve
ear pain by swallowing hard, holding your
nose and gently breathing out with your
mouth closed. If travelling with toddlers or
infants, give them a sweet or feed them a
snack when cabin pressure rises,
particularly during take-off.
SAFETY FIRST. NO COMPROMISE
Your safety is our number-one priority, but you have a part to play
too. The cabin crew’s safety briefing and the safety information
card in your seat pocket provide crucial details in the unlikely event
of an emergency. Always pay attention to these details on each
flight you take because information can vary, such as the location
of emergency exits and equipment. If in doubt about anything
safety-related, ask. Our crew are specially trained to ensure your
safety at all times. Regardless of the situation, safety must never
be compromised, so follow the crew’s safety instructions at all
times. It is an offence to refuse to obey any lawful command
of the captain or cabin crew.
CABIN CLEANLINESS
Please do not place rubbish or other discarded items in your
seat pocket or on the floor. Trash bins and napkins are located in the
lavatories. Unless you have strict dietary requirements not catered
for on board our flights, please refrain from bringing outside food
and beverages into the aircraft. We have a delicious array of meals
and snacks on offer, including tempting vegetarian and halal options.
PORTABLE
ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
You may use your
lightweight portable
electronic devices
(“Flight Safe” mode on
A320 /”Transmitting”
mode on B787) unless advised by crew.
Personal headphones or earphones must be
unplugged and not in use when the aircraft is
taxiing, taking off and landing. Laptops may
not be used and must be properly stowed
when the aircraft is taking off, landing and on
the ground. If you’re boarding or disembarking
the aircraft on the tarmac, you must switch off
your devices. At any point of the flight, the
captain or cabin crew may advise you to turn
off your devices.
STAY HYDRATED
Low humidity in the cabin
can cause your body to
dehydrate. Drink lots of
non-alcoholic beverages
during your flight and
apply moisturiser liberally
to combat dryness. Consume alcohol in
moderation while on board as high altitude
intensifies its effects. The consumption of any
alcoholic beverage not purchased from the
inflight menu is not permitted.
DON’T SMOKE
Scoot enforces a strict no-smoking policy on all
its flights, which also prohibits the use of
e-cigarettes. Please refrain from lighting up in
the lavatories, as doing so could endanger the
safety of your fellow guests or disrupt the flight.
