Athlete of the Month
Lincoln-Way West
runner wins July honor
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Sierra Maze
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Before she graduated this spring, Jenna
Fiore left quite the mark as a runner for Lincoln-Way
West, and North Central College
took notice.
The former Warriors runner is expected to
compete in cross country as well as track and
field for the Naperville school. And she told
22nd Century Media she is excited to take
that next stride, finding a good fit with the
team’s coaches and training.
The distance runner earned one more accolade
on the way, though, claiming the most
votes in 22nd Century Media’s Southwest
Chicago Athlete of the Month contest for
July to win the title.
The Athlete of the Month competition pits
featured Athlete of the Week selections from
our south suburban newspapers against one
another in an online voting contest.
The next contest is to begin Friday, Aug.
10.
To vote, visit MokenaMessenger.com,
hover over the “Sports” menu tab and click
“Athlete of the Month.” Readers can vote
once per session per valid email address.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. Aug. 25.
All athletes featured in the July Athlete of
the Week sports interviews are automatically
entered into the contest.
anne and Taylor went four
holes to decide it, before Bri
eventually won.”
Bolden said she’s “been
in a lot of playoffs.” But a
state title situation, like that,
would be something.
“It would be as friendly
as it would be competitive,”
Bolden said. “We both appreciate
and support each
other. But we both have
the same goal, and we both
want the team to play well
too.”
No matter what happens,
Bolden has an extra motivation
this season. Her grandfather,
Ken Connor, who
taught her the game, passed
away in March.
“He taught me everything
and has always been my golf
coach,” Bolden said. “He got
to see me at state last year
and knew my swing better
than anyone. This season is
a big dedication to him. My
goal is to win state and it
definitely would be for him.”
The Knights open the season
on Thursday, Aug. 9. As
they will do often, especially
early in the season, they
will have a split squad. Half
the team will go to the Barrington
Invitational, starting
Jenna Fiore — a Lincoln-Way West runner
who graduated this spring — won the
The following Monday,
Sierra Maze is an incoming junior on the
Lincoln-Way Central girls water polo team
How’d you get started in water polo?
My siblings. My older sister, [Abigail,]
she played in high school and I always went
to watch her. I kind of follow after her in a lot
of things… My sister played then [my brother,
Mason,] played, and I was like, “Ooh, I
want to try that.”
What do you like best about playing
the position of driver?
I’m a swimmer, as well, so I like being
able to use my speed against the other team.
What do you like least about the
sport?
All the training. It’s a lot of hard work
trying to get to the point where we are right
now. Getting all your muscle back over the
summer, it’s hard coming back after a long
summer. I usually work out over the summer,
too, but high school is so much different
than club.
If you won the lottery, what would
be the first thing you would buy?
Probably a car of my own because right
now I use my parents’ car to get around. I
like trucks, so probably some sort of truck.
Black or silver, normal colors.
What’s your favorite subject in
school?
Math. I think it’s probably because I like
problem solving and getting from point A to
point B with lots of different equations.
What’s your spirit animal?
Maybe a tiger because it’s very fierce and
outgoing, and it’s also very fast. So, probably
tiger.
Have you given any thoughts about
college yet?
I have. I’m not quite set completely on
22nd Century Media file photo
what I want to do. I was thinking interior
design. My brother goes to [University of]
Alabama, and I really love Alabama, so it’s
either there or Colorado is where I’d want
to go.
If you could own an exotic pet, what
would it be?
I really like turtles, so I’d probably have a
turtle if I could have a non-normal pet.
If you could visit any place in the
world, where would you like to go?
I would like to visit Hawaii because it’s so
beautiful there and such a nice environment.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned
playing water polo that you’ve
applied to your life?
Your hard work pays off. With all the
training we do, it really does pay off in the
games. And learning different stuff. Even in
school, it pays off, too, because all the work
that you do, when you apply it to your tests,
it definitely shows.
