Rolls-Royce announced three years ago that it would launch Cullinan, and it did so in the knowledge
that its customers around the world had asked it to build “The Rolls-Royce of SUVs”, with luxury,
performance and usability not seen before in the SUV market. Many of these customers were younger,
very successful high-net-worth individuals who are heavily engaged in the experience economy, and
wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them to the ends of the Earth in ultimate luxury.
Automotive mobility has always been a fast moving and dynamic business, with new concepts – such
as SUVs – appearing with great regularity. But those new concepts need to be perfected in order to be
adopted by those customers who will accept no compromise – the patrons of true luxury. Hence the
Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Rolls-Royce
CULLINAN – All-terrain high-bodied SUV makes
the idea of authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality
For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, which it calls ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era
when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-car, so the occupants did not travel with
their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the
place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the
key fob button.
The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for
the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats.
Have
Fun
The World Cup is over and so much can be learned from it.
Have fun in life. That’s the main lesson.
The faces of passioante supporters in the stadium and on the streets
singing and dancing with their various painted faces and national
costumes brought so much excitement and fun. Many travelled
miles; some quit their jobs and sold everything they had to be there
to cheer on their home teams. Their raw emotion; tears of joy and
despair, and friendships made are part of the whole experience.
Let go. Laugh. Have fun. Sickness and stress will fade away. Life will
be so much better.
PRE-SIHH 2018 NOVELTIES
MARINE TOURBILLON BLUE GRAND FEU
In one magnificent timekeeping instrument, the Marine Tourbillon
unites the three fundamentals so essential to Ulysse Nardin’s identity:
in-house production, technical avant-garde and rare artistry. The
self-winding UN-128 caliber is produced in-house in the workshops
at Le Locle, Switzerland. Embodying the brand’s development and
continued independence in the manufacture of its movements, it
harnesses the properties of silicium technology, with a 60-hour power
reserve and a magnificent flying tourbillon. From its position at 6
o’clock on the blue Grand Feu dial, the tourbillon is a highlight of this
beautiful timepiece, a glorious tribute to the watchmaker’s continued
pursuit of the technical cutting-edge.
CLASSICO MANUFACTURE GRAND FEU
MARINE TORPILLEUR MILITARY
Riding on the wave of success of its Marine Torpilleur, Ulysse Nardin
is releasing the Marine Torpilleur Military edition, a chronometer for
a whole new generation of adventurer. Bold and dashing, this is
a direct descendant of the pocket chronometers prized by the sea
captains of 19th or beginning of the 20th century, radically redesigned
for a resolutely mo-dern era. Featuring the same Ulysse Nardin UN-
118 in-house movement as the celebrated Marine Chronometer, the
Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military takes on a more imposing air,
as if daring the wearer to rise to a new level of challenge.
In mesmerizing black enamel, the Classico Manufacture Grand
Feu transforms the daily act of telling time. While the crafting
of a white Grand Feu enamel dial is already a difficult process,
producing one in intense black is even more complex. The
selection of the enamel powder is crucial in determining the
result: black can only be created by applying different and
carefully chosen colored pigments to the substrate, giving the
enamel opacity and depth. The unusual Classico Manufacture
Grand Feu: a memorable expression of the three Ulysse Nardin
fundamentals of independent manufacturing, skilled craft and
constant innovation.
Story by Carissa Cheng
Health is the most important thing in life for Madam Han even
though she has billions of dollars and assets at her fingertips. This
is especially true from her perspective as a dialysis patient. But she
will not let any illness stand in her way of work and ambition. She
Madam Han was born in a military family in China with strict principles of
— Madam Chen
Han Xiao Ying Chairlady of Jingying
International Industry Holdings
Why is Singapore an attractive place to do
business?
Before any businessman decides to invest its resources,
research and reports have to be conducted and reviewed. In
July 2017, Bain Capital’s survey report showed that the scale
of assets controlled by high-net-worth individuals in China has
reached USD5.9 trillion. Among it, the number of people that
chose Hong Kong as their first choice of overseas investment
dropped from 71% to 53% within two years.
However, investors that chose Singapore as their first choice
of country for their overseas investment increased from 15%
to 20%. Currently Singapore manages about USD1.9 trillion in
assets of which 78% comes from overseas. Morgan Stanley, JP
Morgan and other large Private Banking companies have been
setting up their China relations management team locally in
Singapore.
I think that Singapore will be another “Eastern Zurich”, a global
centre for banking and finance. In our organisation strategy,
Singapore is an important location to set foot in, even though
there are risks. I strongly believe that there is an opportunity in
every crisis. It’s an instinct that every strategic investor has.
Is it also an attractive place to stay
permanently?
Yes, I really enjoy being in Singapore. When selecting a place to
stay, the most basic consideration is the environment and food.
I grew up in the north of China where it is very cold and dry. I
like that the weather in Singapore is the same throughout the
four seasons. I do not have to worry about the weather being
too cold or too hot. I feel very comfortable here. In terms of
environment and food, Singapore is my first choice.
You are a successful entrepreneur. what is
your area of business?
Jingying International Finance (Holdings) Limited was
established in 2009 and our headquarters is located in
Melbourne, Australia. We are a multinational company,
whose vision is to build a complete integrated industry
with a stable and hedging asset investment as its core, and
capacity acquisition as a means of integrating resources. Since
its establishment, the company has been adhering to the
operating philosophy of internationalisation, capital clustering,
basic economics, and virtualised economy.
After 12 years of hard work, the group’s management of assets
has reached nearly USD3 trillion, comprising of 24 first-class
all asset investment subsidiaries and 26 top level professional
service holdings. The company has offices in Australia, United
States, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, France, Brazil,
Chile, Argentina, Singapore, etc. The company’s businesses
cover property, high-end white wine, agriculture, timber,
How DOES your venture and investment in
Singapore help local companies connect to
Singapore and Asia?
Jingying International Industry Investment Holdings Company
Ltd is a subsidiary of Jingying International Group. Believing in
the principles of “I possess what others lack, I innovate what
others possess, I specialise what others innovate and I am the
one to set the standard”, the company is based in Singapore
and adheres to the company’s corporate culture and strategic
vision, with a focus on the Southeast Asian market. Taking in
“The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)” concept to achieve closer
cooperation between China and Southeast Asia, our presence
and business here will help connect and boost the growth in
Singapore and the region. We have established the framework
for our Southeast Asia business, which will contribute to the
harmonious development of the regional economy.
What advice do you have for Singaporeans
who want to start a business in China?
Firstly, you need to know what you want to do for your start up
and how are you going to do it. You need to conduct thorough
market research, capital funding, and most importantly
you need to do self-assessment. You need to proceed with
caution and evaluate if you are suitable and capable. China
is a huge market and most of my businesses are in China. To
Singaporeans looking to start up in China, they have to be clear
of the rules and regulations in China and follow them in order
to successfully gain access into the market.
How do you relax after a hard day at work?
Most people do not believe that I’m a dialysis patient, so
other than work I have to go through my treatment. I believe
everyone should hold on dearly to life and persevere during
hard times. When a person is sick, it does not mean that you
have lost. I work very hard so that I can live better. My husband
is the one who brought me into this industry and he is like a
mentor to me. I am very thankful to him and love spending time
with him. He has never failed to celebrate important events like
my birthday and Valentine’s Day!
What are your personal aspirations?
I was born in a traditional military family in China. Since young,
we were educated upon the principles of dedication and
responsibility. I have always prided myself for being dedicated
and responsible in whatever I do in life.
I plan to build a medical hub in Singapore. What is most
important in life is your health. I understand this deeply, so I see
this as a critical development.
PT Bon Café Indonesia recently announced its grand
opening in Jakarta, Indonesia’s bustling capital city.
Strategically located in Fatmawati, one of the most
vibrant business and commercial districts of South
Jakarta consisting of offices and shopping hubs, PT Bon Café
Indonesia is poised to expand its foothold in Indonesia.
modern four-storey building with its minimalist design, houses
the passion of PT Bon Café Indonesia in its quest to become
rapidly expanding middle class rising coffee consumption.”
“Indonesia, as the fourth largest coffee producer in the world,
is growing at a rapid pace amongst the younger discerning
Indonesian consumers. I’m very excited to embark on this
journey with my team in Indonesia to realise our strategic
business goals together,” said Joe Mohan, Chief Executive
Aloysious Parker, the protagonist from
Seaweed
Sensation
This versatile ingredient from the sea is
a wonderful food source that is packed
with health benefits
By Susanna Ping
The Japanese have been consuming seaweed and
seaweed products for centuries. As their country is
surrounded by the sea and has a rich source of many
species of seaweed, the Japanese are resourceful
enough to include it into their diet and culinary preparations.
Other than the Japanese and Koreans, cultures in the west that
live by the sea also consume seaweed.
Also known as algae and sea vegetables, seaweed has over
hundreds of edible varieties depending on the source. All of
them contain nutrients and a variety of health benefits which
include digestive health, cholesterol-lowering effects and
weight loss. Get your daily dose of a number of essential
minerals and vitamins with only a small amount of seaweed
such as nori, kelp or kombu.
Lots of fibre
The natural fibre known alginate that is found in some types of
seaweed such as kelp, is reported to help digestion and reduce
fat absorption. Studies found that eating seaweed reduced
fat digestion by more than 75 percent. Fibre also helps you
to feel full faster and prevents overeating. Adding seaweed
to your diet could help you lose weight and lower unhealthy
cholesterol levels in the blood.
Essential nutrients
Seaweed contains essential minerals and vitamins you
need to get in a healthy, balanced diet. All types of seaweed
contain essential minerals that includes iron, calcium, copper,
iodine, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus,
potassium, selenium, vanadium and zinc. Vitamins include B
vitamins riboflavin and pantothenic acid, as well as vitamins A
and E; and vitamin C, which aids iron absorption.
One serving of seaweed contains almost one-fifth of the daily
recommended value of vitamin K. Research shows only a
gram of seaweed provides your daily dose of iodine, a mineral
that is critical for healthy thyroid function. Additionally, a
type of brown seaweed called kombu contains the pigment
fucoxanthin, which reportedly helps metabolise fats for energy.
A serving of seaweed is loaded with more calcium than
broccoli and is almost as rich in proteins as legumes. Other
nutrients in seaweed include vitamin B12 and vitamin A.
Types of edible seaweed
Dried, fresh or preserved, there are many types of seaweed
that can be eaten. Seaweed is also classified as algae, with
more than 20 edible types classified by colour - green, red or
brown. Each variety is unique in its appearance, flavour and
texture. Japan is the leading producer of seaweed and many of
the varieties are known by their Japanese names:
Nori - green purple in colour, this seaweed is best known as
wraps for sushi. Also popular are dried nori snacks.
Kelp - most widely used, kelp comes in a number of edible
types. These include: kombu, the green brown thick sheet that
flavours soups and broths. Arame is a typr of kelp in brown
strands with a sweetish flavour. It can be used in soups and
salads.
Wakame - a brown seweed that looks like fern, it grown in
rocky shores in temperate zones of Japan, Korea and China
Sea caviar - there are many species of Caulerpa lentillifera or
sea caviar or sea grapes. They look like bunches of tiny grapes
and are used mainly for fresh salads.
Dulse - a pink red seaweed that has a tender, chewy texture
Recipes
Salt to taste
Soak the dried seaweed in water for 5 minutes to soften. Mix
the sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil and salt in a bowl.
Pour over the seaweed, toss and place on a serving dish.
Scatter sesame seeds on top if using.
Refreshing
Coconut Water
Coconut water not only quenches your
thirst, it helps you build a strong immune
system. By Marie Lee
Coconut water has long been a popular drink in the
tropics where it is available fresh, canned or bottled.
For generations, it has been touted for its healing and
medicinal properties. In recent years, coconut water
has been marketed as a natural energy or sports drink. This
is hardly surprising since it’s chockfull of Vitamin B and C,
electrolytes, amino acids, organic acids, enzymes, minerals and
trace elements, antioxidants and phytonutrients. The list just
goes on and on; and all these are exceptionally beneficial to
your health. They are also great for your heart, skin, bones and
teeth.
What is coconut water?
Coconut water is the liquid found inside unripe coconuts that
eventually forms the familiar white pulp as the fruit matures.
Naturally refreshing, this translucent drink contains easily
digested carbohydrate in the form of sugar and electrolytes.
Though low in sugar, coconut water offers a pleasantly sweet,
nutty taste. Weight- watchers are bound to appreciate that it’s
low in calories, naturally fat- and cholesterol free. Furthermore,
coconut water is all natural, free from added sugar and doesn’t
contain artificial ingredients or food colourings; provided you
choose plain coconut water and avoid those with added sugar
or juices, which are no different from other sugary beverages.
Hydration
Dehydration occurs when you lose more water and electrolytes
than you take in. You lose electrolytes when you sweat or lose
fluid from your body such as when you have diarrhea or vomit.
Coconut water can help keep you hydrated because it contains
high levels of essential electrolytes such as potassium, that are
needed to keep proper fluid balance in your body and maintain
proper muscle and nerve function.
As a sports drink
Drinking refreshing, slightly sweet coconut water after a
workout can help replenish the electrolytes your body needs.
It has fewer calories, less sodium and more potassium than a
sports drink – about 15 times more to be exact. One of the most
important electrolytes that coconut water contains is sodium.
This electrolyte is also the one most depleted with exercise, as
you lose sodium through sweat and urine. Hence, consuming
coconut water after exercise may be a more effective way to
rehydrate than drinking plain water or a sports beverage.
Anti-aging benefits
Coconut water is a good source of plant hormones called
cytokines. These plant hormones have anti-aging effects on
human cells, keeping them smooth, full and youthful. Drinking
coconut water can have an anti-aging effect on your body,
including your skin, from the inside out. It improves wound
healing and eye health as well.
Curative properties
Coconut water has also shown significant anti-cancer and
anti-thrombotic benefits. This is due once again to its high
cytokine content. It is useful as a means to treat diseases such
as hypertension and heart disease because it is an effective
vasodilator, improving circulation and reducing the occurrence
of plaque formation in your arteries. Coconut water contains
trans-zeatin which can be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease or
dementia.
Helps balance blood glucose and insulin
levels
Coconut water is excellent for diabetic patients as it contains
certain nutritional properties that help in maintaining the blood
sugar levels. Coconut water directly improves blood circulation
and aids to widen the vessels for smooth blood circulation.
Therefore, coconut water provides great relief against fighting
the symptoms and side effects of diabetes.
Lowers blood pressure
Coconut water lowers triglyceride levels helping to manage
the good cholesterol in your body. A study showed that 71 per
cent of participants lowered their blood pressure after drinking
coconut water.
Dissolves kidney stones and prevents urinary
tract infection
Due to its high quantities of potassium, coconut water may help
alkalize urine and dissolve certain types of kidney stones. Foods
high in potassium are excellent sources of nutrients that help
create an alkaline-forming environment in the blood and urine,
altering the body’s pH and dissolving various calculi. Since it is
a diuretic, coconut water helps prevent urinary tract infections.
Good for the bones and teeth
Calcium is needed for healthy bones, muscles and tissues.
Coconut water provides a high amount of calcium which
strengthens bones and teeth. It is effective in preventing
osteoporosis. It also improves oral health and prevents tooth
decay.
For pregnant women
Coconut water is beneficial for pregnant women. Many
pregnant women in tropical climates drink it to alleviate
morning sickness and to soothe the stomach after vomiting. It
aids digestion and prevents constipation, a common complaint
during pregnancy. Coconut water contains lauric acid which
boosts the immune system, preventing infection and illnesses.
only nurtured his country with breathtaking buildings and
landscapes, but also inspired the world with unique elements
of modernist architecture drawn upon the surrounding beauty
of Sri Lanka. He is famous for 'inventing' Tropical Modernism
– using vernacular concepts and recycled, salvaged local
materials to cool a space and capture sunlight, to harness wind
currents. He shunned swathes of glass and airconditioning and
used open verandahs, courtyards, ha has, pillars, pavilions,
wall-ess roofless rooms, loggia, green spaces and waterbodies.
Lunuganga Country Estate, Bentota
1948-1998
Nestling near the Indian Ocean and Dedduwa Lake, Lunuganga
Country Estate seamlessly fuses architecture, interior design,
landscaping and environment into a single holistic entity.
Frangipani trees line the walkway and frame views of the
shimmering lake and Katakuliya temple. There are lily ponds
and rice plots, statues and huge earthern pots. Bats, birds,
toads and other wildlife share your sanctuary. Lunuganga is
today a functioning commercial hotel owned by the Bawa Trust.
No. 11, 33rd Lane, Bagatelle Road, Colombo
Townhouse and Home Office
1962–1968
In 1959, Bawa rented the third bungalow in a row of four and
converted it into a little pied a terre with sitting room, kitchen,
bedroom and servant's room. When the neighbouring units
became available Bawa, acquired them. He hacked walls to
join the four units in a major remodelling exercise with his
ever-expanding composition that used salvaged items from
old buildings throughout the country. There are elements of
European and Asian architecture; classical and modernist.
Everything connects to a matrix of axes and geometric lines
linking pavilions, courtyards, corridors, pavilions, tower,
outdoor rooms.
Wildlife and Beaches
If you have kids in tow they'll be restless for something else.
Beach life includes the deserted beaches of Jaffna and the
golden sands of the south, and the water sports spots and
spectacular coves of the east coast. You can surf at Arugam
Bay, jet-ski in Bentota or kite surf in Kalpitiya. Snorkel at Pigeon
Island in Trincomalee, scuba dive at The Basses in the south or
head out to sea on a luxury catamaran for a morning of whale
and dolphin watching in Mirissa. Passikudah is home to one of
the longest stretches of shallow coastline in the world where
you can walk far out sea with the water just lapping your legs.
For contrast explore the wildlife of Sri Lanka and you may spot
wild cats, elephants and deer. Deep South and Yala National
Park have the highest density of leopards of anywhere in the
world.
No More Free Space?
This question pervades Singapore’s pavilion at the 16th International
Architecture Exhibition
La Biennale di Venezia
Sale d’Armi, Arsenale
26 May – 25 November 2018
Lucky Shophouse by Chang Architects
“We restored an old book store
to become a residential house
and, instead of maximising its
built-up area, transformed the
concrete backyard into a singlestory
extension and a garden, thus
offering breathing spaces and green
spaces for the family to enjoy.”
Nearly six million people live in Singapore, a tiny island with an area of 720sqm.
No More Free Space? tells the story of how Singapore-based architects and urban
planners find creative ways to bring delightful free spaces to the city’s everyday life. This
connects to the overall theme of FREESPACE at this year’s International Architecture
Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia.
The Singapore pavilion greets you with a cloud of luminescent handcrafted acrylic knots and
immerses you in the sights, sounds, smells and textures of Singapore. The creative freedom of
the mind turns constraints into possibilities.
Bringing a garden into the house, turning an old bookshop into beautiful liveable space,
connecting seniors with food and fun at a void space under a block of flats, incorporating
a natural pond and vegetable gardens into a hospital’s landscape to promote wellbeing,
transforming office space into a play den for children to learn via exploration and play.
These are part of 12 Singapore-based projects at the exhibition that showcase the creativity and
resourcefulness of the architects while borrowing natural resources such as light, air, greenery
and water. The projects show imagination, openness, discovery and resolution to offer answers
to the question No More Free Space?
The Singapore Pavilion is commissioned by the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg) of the Ministry of
Communications and Information, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), and curated
by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) in collaboration with the National
University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture (NUS). The exhibition marks the country’s
sixth showcase at the International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, since 2004.
Repurposing
the Historical
Shophouse
You do business and trade on the ground floor.
Residential living is on the upper floors. The
shophouse is an iconic heritage building in Singapore.
With various architectural styles from various eras,
shophouses are laid out in a row with several units fused
together along with a common 5-foot walkway and clay-tiled
roof. You’ll find clusters of conservation status shophouses
in ethnic neighbourhoods such as Chinatown, Little India,
Kampong Glam and Joo Chiat. Many have been repurposed
for modern, contemporary use in food, retail and leisure
accomodation.
Ashish Manchharam has a soft spot for shophouses because
he grew up in one. His youngs days were spent playing with
his neighbours on the Kampong Glam streets and often staying
over for dinner at their homes. Today the owner and managing
director of 8M Real Estate is behind many of Singapore’s
shophouse restoration projects such as Luke’s Oyster Bar &
Chop House, Employees Only Singapore and Birds of a Feather
in the Amoy Street area.
Transforming the shophouse into contemporary usable space is one
of 8M Real Estate’s passions. They recently opened their flexi-stay
hotel Ann Siang House
Manchharam recently unveiled Ann Siang House, a flexi-stay
hotel that was formerly known as The Club. Its stylish interior
spaces went through a reconfiguration design process led by
Flo Sander of iThink Consulting, drawing inspiration from the
surrounding street scenes of Ann Siang Hill and Chinatown.
The 1920s heritage building fuses elements of the past and
the present with spacious rooms flush with natural light and
neighbourhood views. Handmade furniture feature with eclectic
artwork, bold bathtubs and private balconies.
A Chat with
Ashish Manchharam,
owner and managing
director of 8M Real
Estate, about Ann Siang
House and developing
shophouses
Who are your architects and designers,
and what concepts do you and they focus
on when turning a shophouse into a
contemporary space?
Over the years, we’ve worked with some enormously talented
individuals. Wendy Koh from WK Partners is an authority on
restoring heritage properties and has been integral to a number
of our redevelopment projects including the much-lauded
interior design for our serviced apartments at Hongkong Street
property, BASE Residences. To compliment Wendy’s talents,
we also work with Flo Sander from iThink Consulting whose
commitment to excellence, modern aesthetic and eye for detail
is an invaluable contribution to breathing fresh life into our
heritage properties.
What are your plans for your Keong Saik
Road project?
We’ve already commenced the conversion of the ground
floor space into multiple f&b units. The Guild by Hongkong
craft brewers, Young Masters Brewers, is the first concept to
open in May. The opening of the remaining f&b spaces will be
staggered in the 2nd half of 2018.
Tell us something interesting about the
design and dining concepts of Ann Siang
House.
We’re very proud of the final product. In line with our vision
for the property, it has been transformed through bold
enhancements to our facade and a deliberate repositioning
realised through the careful selection of dynamic f&b concepts
that complement not only our beautifully appointed 20-room
onsite lodging but also the neighbourhood vibe. Whether its
gourmet pizza with an unrivalled selection of Californian wines
offered by Blue Label or unparalleled city views from our
rooftop, we think we’ve created a space for everyone to relax
and enjoy in the heart of oldtown Singapore.
You’re selective with the businesses that you
choose for your properties – what qualities
do you look for in prospective tenants?
Well-thought concepts with strong, passionate management
teams. Prior to signing a lease with a new operator, we review
brand decks, design, menus, pricing – all of it. We believe in
creating properties with staying power which means that we
need to secure operators who have concepts with longevity.
The shophouse is a vernacular architectural
treasure in Singapore. Is there a particular
era or style that you are fond of, for
example early style, transitional style?
One style that’s interesting is from the art deco era mainly
due to the clean lines and how we can weave that into the
facade with colours and lighting. Unfortunately, many art deco
buildings have not been restored and redeveloped unless
located within the shophouse districts. We own a few In
Hongkong Street and Boat Quay.
What are your fondest memories of growing
up in a shophouse in Kampong Glam?
It was a very different time as most of the shophouses then
were for retail use on the ground floor and for residential use
on the upper floors. It meant that during the day it was full of
commerce and at night filled with residents. As kids, we used
to hangout at each other’s houses in the neighbourhood often
staying for dinner. We would play soccer and cricket in the back
alleys, which is today Bussorah Street and Haji Lane.
Apart from office space, f&b and a scattering
of residential units, would you like to see
shophouse residential living brought back to
Singapore on a larger scale?
The upper floors are undergoing a massive facelift and will
be rebranded and reimagined to offer an approachable,
high-quality, design-led lodging alternative on the Keong Saik
Road stretch. We are excited to bring a contemporary, flexible
stay concept servicing the growing need for such space in
Singapore.
Do you strive to keep the spirit of history
alive in these spaces?
Of course, but with a modern twist. We pride ourselves
on preserving the integrity of our assets while creatively
reengineering spaces to ensure modern conveniences are
provided to our discerning tenants and guests.
What local food do you crave for after a
hard day at work?
I love chicken rice, popiah and carrot cake! Always up for that!
If a young boy tells you he wants to be a
property developer like you what advice
would you give him?
I would tell him to learn all about property development
first by working with a real estate company. It’s important to
understand the intricacies of development before embarking
on it yourself. In the end, it’s fulfilling to be involved with the
way people live – eat, live, work and play – when we design the
space and eventually build it.
Yes, I think it’s an Important part of the restoration process.
The original use should be brought back; however, with
contemporary, modern amenities. This is what we are trying
to do with Ann Siang House and BASE Residences. There
is growing demand for this type of living, in particular, when
shophouses are fully restored to provide the comforts of other
residential use.
Building: 1935 but characterised by a tenement building from the late 1800s. Minimalist design where
Note of interest: Norwegian Nobel Prize writer Sigrid Undset lived at 20 Vibes Gate from 1896 to 1898
Architects Alexander Heien Berg and Ibrahim Elhayawan
of Various Architects (variousarchitects.no) undertook the
design and renovation of the Vibes Gate apartment to instil
a contemporary feel by opening up spaces, remodelling,
repositioning social and sleeping sections from the original
plan, and connecting zones along a common thread.
Maximising the utilisation of space for comfort, modern lifestyle
and sophistication is a key objective.
The living room together with the kitchen form the apartment’s
social zone, with seating areas, fireplace and plenty of space for
a dining table.
All surfaces and fittings are new or treated. The bathroom is
finished with white marble tiles on floors and walls. The kitchen
matches the contemporary look of the overall white interior
with its colour scheme of deep blue fittings and white marble
counter tops.
A highlight of the apartment is a rough textured concrete slab
wall with a multi-function wooden mount that spans its breadth.
It combines bar, bookshelf and seat bench that connects the
kitchen and living room together with the hallway. On it you can
eat, store, display, work from home and tie your shoes on your
A Chat with architects
Alexander Heien Berg and Ibrahim Elhayawan
about their 26A Vibes Gate project
Alexander Heien Berg
Ibrahim Elhayawan
The rough-textured concrete wall creates a unique character for the apartment
You have created a contemporary style
by opening up spaces. What was the main
objective of your design project for this
apartment in Oslo?
Our design scheme suits single people or young couples.
The aim is to maximise the utilisation of space to suit various
lifestyles.
Why did you choose this colour concept?
Our colour palette goes from warm beige in the living room and
to slightly darker and cooler blue-green tones in the bedrooms.
This provides various atmospheres in different spaces.
Several interior elements such as lighting and kitchen fittings
are chosen in black to form a continuous thread in the whole
apartment.
What did you want to achieve with touches of
gold?
The gold in the kitchen, the bathroom and the hallway creates
an exquisite and timeless touch, matching the marble in the
kitchen and the bathroom.
The large windows let a lot of light through.
Did you take advantage of the natural light
in your design?
Yes. The design concept is based on opening the spaces of the
apartment to create a flow between the rooms, and to allow the
natural light through the whole apartment.
Tell us about the rough-textured concrete
slab wall as part of your design scheme.
The main focus was to create a unique character for the
apartment, and this is achieved by exposing the rough concrete
structure of the building.
One of the furnishing highlights is the
wooden counter that spans this concrete
wall. What inspired you to create this as
opposed to conventional shelving units?
The rough concrete surface contrasts with the soft wooden
element with various functions attached to it. This solution
provided more usable space in front of the kitchen, activating
an otherwise useless area. The counter is a combined bar
solution, bookshelf and seat bench, connecting the kitchen and
living room together with the hallway.
What parts of your own personality did you
leave behind in the finished result?
The open design with raw and simple elements that contrast
sophisticated solutions reflect our characters. This project
emphasises our dedication to create a special design,
regardless of the size and scale.
Mercedes-Benz
The new AMG GT R
From the world’s most demanding racetrack directly onto the road: Never before has Mercedes AMG
packed so much motorsport technology into a production vehicle than into the new AMG GT R.
Featuring pioneering technologies, the AMG GT R was designed with racetrack use firmly in mind. Its
development was largely based on vast motor- racing experience in AMG GT3 customer sport and the
German Touring Car Masters. Figures such as 3.6 seconds from zero to 100km/h and a top speed of
318km/h, combined with the outstanding driving dynamics, will undoubtedly translate into extremely
fast laps on the racetrack. The new exclusive colour “AMG green hell magno” alone establishes a
visual link to the “Green Hell”, the nickname for the legendary “North Loop” of the Nurburgring,
emphasising that the car’s roots are firmly embedded in the racetrack.
