Woodlands Academy prepares
women for STEM careers
As aptly stated by the Brookings Institution,
“The challenges that face the world
today — from global poverty and climate
change to financial systems and conflict —
require globally-minded solutions. Global
competency skills are necessary so that
young people can invent a future that appropriately
addresses global challenges.”
The Center for Global Studies at Woodlands
Academy of the Sacred Heart equips
students to navigate through and flourish
in a rapidly changing global landscape by
equipping each student with global competencies.
“The Center for Global Studies at
Woodlands has opened my eyes to the
interconnectedness of our world today,”
said Mikayla Swanson ’18. “Going on international
exchange is an experience beyond
words that has allowed me to learn,
embrace, and share the different cultures
of the world with my friends and family.
It has also furthered my understanding of
the challenges facing the world today and
sparked a desire in me to take action and
contribute to the solutions.”
Mikayla’s most recent trip abroad took
her to Japan on an international exploration
as a part of the school’s Global Odyssey
program. Over this year’s Global Odyssey
— a one-of-a-kind global education program
that is part of the Center’s offerings
— 54 students traveled to seven countries
on four continents during the last week of
May. Mikayla will continue to develop
her ability to contribute to solutions to
solve global challenges when she attends
Georgetown University in Washington,
D.C. this fall, where she is considering a
major in International Relations.
As a part of the worldwide network of
Sacred Heart Schools that spans the United
States and 40 other countries, internationality
is a part of the school’s DNA. Founded
in 1858, Woodlands Academy is an
independent Catholic college preparatory
day and boarding high school for young
women. Woodlands Academy’s identity is
rooted in Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s
desire to inspire young hearts and minds to
excel, to lead lives of integrity and to serve.
By empowering girls to lead, compete, engage,
and explore, Woodlands Academy
empowers girls to change the world.
Montessori School of
Lake Forest encourages
academic and
character development
Discovering the Nature of Learning
MONTESSORI EDUCATION
Call for a Tour
Montessori philosophy
sees each child as
unique and precious with
magnificent individual
potential. It emphasizes
learning through handson
experience, utilizing all
five senses, not just listening,
watching or reading.
Children learn at their own
pace and according to their
own choice of activities
from hundreds of possibilities.
Learning is an exciting
process of discovery,
leading to concentration,
motivation, self-discipline
and a life-long love of
learning.
During the first three
years of life, the brain absorbs
and processes more
information than at any
other time in life. Children
are born learners, but
need the right environment
to grow, learn and
unlock their full potential.
The Montessori School of
Lake Forest offers a weekly
Parent – Infant program,
which provides just such a
place to begin.
Starting at age three,
Montessori classrooms
group children across
three-year age spans. Each
child moves through periods
of being the observer,
the participant, and the
teacher. Older children
help younger children to
learn, which reinforces
their own knowledge.
Younger children admire
their older classmates and
eagerly anticipate the day
when they too will have
enough knowledge to act
as role models. MSLF
provides the caring, supportive
and prepared atmosphere
that promotes the
development of responsibility,
collaboration and
cooperation.
Continuing the multiage
classroom into the elementary
years, students
now strive for intellectual
independence. While following
their interests and
passions, they naturally
collaborate with others,
and self-direct their efforts
creating an atmosphere of
intellectual rigor, experimentation
and challenge.
By the time these MSLF
students complete the elementary
cycles, they are
well prepared to meet the
challenges ahead of them
in middle-school and succeed,
academically, socially
and emotionally.
MSLF’s approach emphasizes
the development
of the whole child and
encourages academic and
character development
equally. Curricula at each
developmental level are
broad and deep. Our standards
exceed the Illinois
State Board of Education’s
requirements, and students
thrive at every level.
MSLF alumni go on to
succeed at renowned high
schools, universities, postgraduate
institutions and
workplaces.
MSLF is currently enrolling
in all programs,
with immediate openings
in our new toddler classroom,
for children ages
15 months to 3 years, and
children ages 3-6 in our
Primary program.
Full Day and Full Year
Options are available 7:30
a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Rochelle Zell Jewish High
culture of academic excellence
that inspires students to think
critically and achieve their full
potential, while preparing them
to live Judaism as responsible and
is to nurture the whole student —
academically, spiritually, physically
and socially.
class size of eight, Howe
provides the individual
for them. Daily scheduled
Program (CAP) that
gives cadets one-on-one
access to faculty members
to discuss academic matters
reinforces our belief
The school offers students an
exceptional college preparatory
curriculum that includes honors
is updated every six weeks
Rochelle Zell Jewish High
Youth Choral Theater of Chicago led by New Trier choral director
Founded in 1985, Youth
Choral Theater of Chicago
now enrolls 90 children
and youth from 19 Illinois
communities. Auditioned
ensembles that specialize
in top quality vocal training
to students ages 3-18
rehearse in two locations
in Wilmette.
YCT is led by Artistic
Director Amy Branahl,
who joined the organization
in the fall of 2016.
Branahl graduated from
the University of Illinois
(Champaign-Urbana) with
BME and MME degrees
in Choral Music Education
(Voice/Piano). She has also
taken the intensive Choral
Conducting Symposium
at Westminster Choir College.
Branahl is the choral
director at New Trier High
School-Northfield Campus
where she teaches Boys’
and Girls’ Freshmen Choruses.
She is the founder of
YCT’s newest a cappella
group, Impact.
There are many different
ensembles within YCT
that students can participate
in, depending on their
ability and grade in school.
Students learn a large variety
of music including
classical, musical theater,
pop music, and music from
around the world, giving
students a solid foundation
of singing techniques.
With the students in the
more advanced ensembles
singing the most challenging
parts of the music and
younger students singing
the more straightforward
parts, all student can sing
together as one choir while
learning at their own pace.
Each student learns group
singing, solo singing, music
theory, rhythm, listening,
cooperation, and
teamwork. Because YCT
has been around since the
1980s, we have developed
a reputation as a choir that
not only sounds good and
produce singers that continue
with music, in some
way, for the rest of their
lives. We have alumni of
the program that are involved
in community music
groups, studying music
in college, and are even
professional musicians.
Something that sets
YCT apart from other organizations
is our mission
to provide our top quality
vocal training to all students,
no matter their economic
background. Our
scholarship program is a
large part of the fundraising
that we do throughout
the year for just that reason.
We pride ourselves
on our ability to allow all
students to participate in
YCT programs because
of the fantastic benefits
that music provides. YCT
is embarking on it’s 33rd
season of music making.
For nearly 135 years, St. John’s
Northwestern Military Academy has
the character of young people
from around the country and around
the world, many of whom have gone
has produced heads of state, entrepreneurs,
accomplished artists, and
well-rounded and well-grounded
young people who became leaders in
countless other disciplines.
Nestled in the scenic lake country
region of southeastern Wisconsin,
St. John’s Northwestern Military
Academy is a private boarding and
day school for young men and women
in grades 7 through 12. At every
level, the school provides the structure,
discipline and focus that many
young people need to reach their full
potential, and small classes and dedicated
faculty that ensure they receive
the very best formative educational
experience.
The campus remains vibrant
throughout the summer with its
unique and highly popular five-week
summer school program called Summer
OPS (Opportunities for Personal
Success) for young men and women
in grades 7 through 12 that allows
students to catch up or work ahead
in traditional academic areas or explore
interests that they were unable
to during the regular academic year.
Summer OPS also includes a chance
to participate in activities such as
aviation, computer programming,
JROTC leadership, and language
studies.
In addition, Camp St. John’s
Northwestern offers four week-long
sessions of high-energy adventure
camp for young men and women
ages 10-16 that promote physical
activity, leadership, self-confidence
and teamwork. Camp sessions feature
popular activities such as paintball,
rappelling/climbing, “THE
MUD PIT,” archery, obstacle course,
water survival, SCUBA diving, fellowship,
and just plain fun.
Leap into fall with SNAP
Boost your good health
with classes in the arts!
A 2016 Huffington Post
Wellness article entitled,
“Dancing Isn’t Just Fun –
It’s Really Good for your
Health”, among many
other studies, supports the
idea that dancing is not
only viscerally advantageous,
but also shows a 76
percent reduction in dementia
risk!
The article continues to
state that, while dancing is
a great cardio workout, it is
also a social boon, it’s accessible
to everyone, it’s
more gentle on the body
than some other sports,
and, unlike other physical
activities, you don’t need to
purchase a lot of equipment
to see benefits. There are a
variety of styles offered in
Pascal Pour Elle offers
variety of color treatments
In the beauty industry,
color serves as a form of
expression for both men
and women; it ranges from
soft and subtle to bold and
unpredictable. In my salon,
most men opt for our
10-minute gray-blending
treatment, focusing on
converting their “salt” to
“pepper” while leaving the
temples intact to gently reduce
the appearance of aging.
Our female clientele
opt for a broader spectrum
of services and are a bit
bolder with their selection.
Whatever your preference,
I suggest conducting some
research before you commit.
There are various types
of color, ranging from
temporary to permanent.
Temporary colors deposit
pigment onto the hair cuticle
without penetrating.
the vast realm of dance, so
it is easy to find one that
piques your interest. Additionally,
there is currently
a large movement toward
competitive dance across
the nation, which makes
choosing dance another
viable option for the team
sports-minded consumer.
Luckily, Studio North
Academy of the Performing
Arts, LLC, in Wilmette,
can help you find
your healthy passion!
SNAP offers dance classes
in ballet, tap, jazz, modern,
musical theatre, lyrical,
They contain no ammonia
or peroxide and therefore
cannot lighten hair. These
semi and demi permanent
options can last up to 24
shampoos. Permanent color
removes pigment from
hair while also depositing
new color; it does not
wash out, requiring root
touch-ups for maintenance
every six to eight weeks. If
you are looking for a more
dramatic change (two or
more shades darker or
lighter than your natural),
a permanent color is a better
option and best for coloring
gray hair. There are
several color techniques
and applications: single
process, highlighting,
balayage, ombre to name
a few.
While maintaining your
beautiful color during
the summer, protection is
contemporary, and musical
theatre, in addition to periodic
sessions in acro training,
pilates, and WERQ
dance fitness. Additionally,
SNAP offers private
and group music lessons
at the studio, in piano,
voice and guitar. Adults
and children are welcome
to indulge in their healthy,
artistic pleasures at Studio
North Academy in
Wilmette. There really is
something for everyone!
both multitasking protection
North Shore Country Day focuses on what matters most in education
In 1919, North Shore Country
Day was the visionary answer to a
fundamental question: What matters
most when educating a child?
Since then, NSCD has continually
refined its answer to propel the
school’s educational model forward
with purpose and passion,
building a transformative JK-12
community on four essential pillars:
Purposeful Challenge — Truly
knowing each student allows
faculty to challenge and support
them as people and learners.
Intentional Design — NSCD
carefully crafts its entire JK-12
program to optimize learning,
develop skills and prioritize
wellness.
Courageous Exploration — The
school pushes students to participate
widely and take risks
regularly, ensuring they stretch,
explore stumble and grow.
Conscientious Community — The
diverse community and collaborative
culture help students
understand themselves and their
obligations to each other, their
communities and their world.
North Shore Country Day is
a place where school is engaging,
interesting, rigorous and fun.
Teachers know each student and
set the bar high in order to build
confident, independent thinkers.
Students balance passions with
responsibilities and learning becomes
a way of life.
Early Childhood
Every moment in NSCD’s junior
and senior kindergarten program
is an opportunity for joyful
learning. These youngest students
are known and loved, they’re empowered
and encouraged. Asking
questions, making choices, listening,
participating in discussions,
sharing, reading books, creating
art, making music, speaking Spanish
and moving about.
Lower School
NSCD believes that learning is
engaging when it’s meaningful,
awakening the senses and opening
the mind. Students develop a solid
academic foundation, venture into
local communities and are encouraged
to think globally—not only
growing in knowledge but in character.
Students learn to speak up
and become self-advocates. The
goal is to see each child thrive
by helping them develop the selfconfidence
needed to truly blossom
in a challenging program.
Middle School
NSCD Middle School faculty
sees the world through students’
eyes, and not only understands
but truly enjoys adolescents. It
also sets high standards and demands
academic accountability.
The school welcomes spontaneous
ideas that enhance learning:
An experiment becomes a Science
Olympiad project, a debate
evolves into a Model United Nations
presentation and a servicelearning
exercise builds awareness
to enlighten others.
Upper School
The North Shore Country Day
Upper School is vibrant, challenging,
engaging and intentionally
designed for learning. The
long-block schedule is just one
example. With four 75-minute
classes per day, students have time
to practice and develop skills, and
understand and analyze material
on a deeper level. It also provides
teachers flexibility to design a
range of learning experiences. The
goal is to support meaningful academic
engagement, inquiry-based
and experiential learning, and a
more balanced and healthy school
experience.
Outcomes
The true outcome of a North
Shore Country Day education is
seen in graduates who advance
into college and the world fully
prepared for whatever comes next.
They are exceptionally equipped
with the skills and the mindsets to
make an impact on their world after
years spent exploring, collaborating
and embracing the school’s
motto, “Live and Serve.”
Mathnasium allows children of all ages
to develop and learn vital math skills
Mathnasium is a mathonly
after-school learning
center with over 900 locations
worldwide. Mathnasium
provides a fun,
active and social learning
environment where a child
can develop a lifetime passion
for math, operating on
the core belief that virtually
any child can become
great at math.
Mathnasium focuses its
curriculum on the development
of Number Sense
— the ability to think
mathematically and with
mathematical fluency —
which is the foundation of
math understanding. The
Mathnasium Method,
implemented at more than
900 Mathnasium centers
in the U.S. and abroad
combines mental, verbal,
visual, tactile, and written
techniques. Using Number
Sense and the Mathnasium
Method, “Mathletes” learn
how to conceptualize math
through a unique program
that provides each child
with a customized learning
plan and personalized
instruction in a way that
‘makes sense to them.’
“At Mathnasium, we focus
solely on math, so we
know how to teach it in a
way that really connects
with kids. Mathnasium
centers across the country
have helped struggling
students develop into ‘A’
students and ‘A’ students
go on to even greater
achievements. Children at
Mathnasium quickly learn
that math can be fun and
interesting as well as extraordinarily
useful, both
in terms of succeeding in
school and for the valuable
life skills it provides.”
Mathnasium increases
a student’s understanding,
skills, and overall
math performance, while
building a child’s confidence
and a positive attitude
toward math. For
students, the Mathnasium
experience begins with a
highly detailed assessment
of each child’s strengths
and weaknesses, which is
then used to create a customized
learning plan.
Personalized instruction
from Mathnasium’s highly
trained and caring instructors
assures that each student
fully understands key
concepts before moving
on to the next. “The greatest
part of Mathnasium is
that we can individually
tailor our curriculum to the
student’s needs — from
the struggling student to
the gifted wanting enrichment.”
“The teaching of math
is rapidly changing these
days. Common Core standards
are impacting how
all students are taught (particularly
impacting gifted
students). In addition, the
expansion of technology,
such as graphing calculators,
is evolving topics reserved
in the past for college
to be taught in high
school. Math is the U.S.
in a ‘mile wide but an inch
deep.’ A lot of ground is
covered but not with great
depth. At Mathnasium, we
dig deeper so that our students
develop true mastery
in the topic.”
Mathnasium. We change
lives through math!
to educating the child’s mind, body
and heart through all developmental stages.
From early elementary years, students
have the opportunity to lead and serve their
community through the Reading Buddy
program, service projects, and student-led
chapels and drama productions. Through
mentoring programs for middle and high
school students and weekly chapels, students
connect biblical truth to their daily
lives and receive spiritual support. Special
programs such as serving trips to the Dominican
Republic and internships at local
hospitals allow students to gain real-life
experience and discover paths for college
and life. One high school parent stated,
“My child has grown in spiritual maturity
and character because of the positive,
faith-nurturing environment and the caring
teachers at CHA. CHA’s academically rigorous
honors and AP courses have given
her outstanding preparation for college,
and the school’s smaller size has allowed
her to have more leadership roles than she
would have had at a huge school. I’m so
thankful to CHA and proud of the person
she is becoming - a compassionate, godly
and intelligent young leader who reflects
the heart of Christ.”
“Christian Heritage Academy is unique
among schools in this region, combining
academic excellence with a Christian
worldview. CHA partners with parents to
develop leaders who will take their faith
into the world and serve their communities
with excellence,” CHA President Hutz
Hertzberg said.
Forest Bluff School fosters independence
through self-directed learning
Walk into a Forest Bluff
School classroom on any
given day, and you will see
students deeply engaged in
a wide array of meaningful
work of their choosing,
perhaps identifying
the parts of speech in a
favorite poem, researching
the burial customs of
ancient Egypt or collaborating
with classmates on
an original play about the
structure of a leaf. At Forest
Bluff School, an internationally
renowned,
AMI-accredited Montessori
school in Lake Bluff,
students between the ages
of 18 months and 14 years
experience the joy and satisfaction
of a self-directed
learning approach that respects
their innate curiosity,
encourages independence,
and embraces the
individuality of each child.
Since its founding 35
years ago, Forest Bluff
School has adhered faithfully
to the educational
philosophy developed by
Dr. Maria Montessori. We
believe that the search for
understanding, as opposed
to the memorization of information,
is the essence
of a meaningful education.
A Forest Bluff School
education focuses on the
child’s skills for discovery
and exploration through
hands-on learning opportunities
at every age. The
child-centered instructional
methods allow students
to take ownership of their
learning and provide students
with the skills and
confidence to challenge
themselves on many levels.
Many of the learning
experiences that students
most enjoy at Forest Bluff
School are those that take
place off campus. Schoolwide
theatrical productions,
Secondary Level
(ages 12-14) work trips,
small group outings to
supplement classroom research,
and regular visits
to local parks and the public
library are just some
of the ways in which our
students are given frequent
opportunities to apply
their learning outside of
the classroom.
As a true Montessori
school, we support the
development of the whole
child. Students at Forest
Bluff School not only exhibit
academic excellence,
but also the many qualities
that constitute positive
character development:
empathy, integrity, grit,
resilience, responsibility,
initiative, self-discipline,
self-reflection, and respect
for themselves, others, and
the environment.
Graduates of Forest
Bluff School achieve excellent
records at public
and private high schools,
large and small, local and
North Shore Country Day
national. Recent graduates
have gone on to attend
Lake Forest High School,
Lake Forest Academy,
Woodlands Academy, St.
Paul’s School, and Phillips
Exeter Academy, among
others.
Every member of the
Forest Bluff School faculty
holds a master’s degree
in education and is AMI
Montessori certified. Our
experienced and dedicated
teachers work closely with
one another, sharing their
wisdom and best practices
for supporting all students
in their quest for knowledge,
understanding, and
genuine human connections.
Forest Bluff School recognizes
the importance of
building strong relationships
with the families it
serves. As such, we maintain
close communications
with parents on an ongoing
basis through our Parent
Education programs that
include book discussions,
lectures, parent and child
classes (for children under
18 months), and more.
Adults and children alike
benefit from the intimate,
supportive, and welcoming
parent community at
Forest Bluff School.
