22ndCenturyMedia.com private school guide 22nd century media | August 9, 2018 | 5 Youth Choral Theater of Chicago led by New Trier choral director Founded in 1985, Youth Choral Theater of Chicago now enrolls 90 children and youth from 19 Illinois communities. Auditioned ensembles that specialize in top quality vocal training to students ages 3-18 rehearse in two locations in Wilmette. YCT is led by Artistic Director Amy Branahl, who joined the organization in the fall of 2016. Branahl graduated from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) with BME and MME degrees in Choral Music Education (Voice/Piano). She has also taken the intensive Choral Conducting Symposium at Westminster Choir College. Branahl is the choral director at New Trier High School-Northfield Campus where she teaches Boys’ and Girls’ Freshmen Choruses. She is the founder of YCT’s newest a cappella group, Impact. There are many different ensembles within YCT that students can participate in, depending on their ability and grade in school. Students learn a large variety of music including classical, musical theater, pop music, and music from around the world, giving students a solid foundation of singing techniques. With the students in the more advanced ensembles singing the most challenging parts of the music and younger students singing the more straightforward parts, all student can sing together as one choir while learning at their own pace. Each student learns group singing, solo singing, music theory, rhythm, listening, cooperation, and teamwork. Because YCT has been around since the 1980s, we have developed a reputation as a choir that not only sounds good and produce singers that continue with music, in some way, for the rest of their lives. We have alumni of the program that are involved in community music groups, studying music in college, and are even professional musicians. Something that sets YCT apart from other organizations is our mission to provide our top quality vocal training to all students, no matter their economic background. Our scholarship program is a large part of the fundraising that we do throughout the year for just that reason.
