only as the Phantom lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House. He falls in love with
the obscure chorus singer Christine and privately tutors her while terrorizing the rest of the opera
house demanding Christine be given lead roles. It is based on Gaston Leroux's novel Le Fantôme
de l'Opéra (1910).
The King and I - November 27, 2018 - The King and I is the fifth musical by the team of
Hamilton - December 30, 2018 - Lin-Manuel Miranda's Pulitzer prize-winning transformation
of Ron Chernow's biography, Hamilton, into a hip-hop musical is taking the world by storm. At
the center of this groundbreaking multi-award-winning new musical is the story of founding father
outsider and bastard child to American war hero and George Washington's right-hand man.
Fiddler on the Roof - February 26, 2019 - Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman with five daughters,
explains the customs of the Jews in the Russian shtetl of Anatevka in 1905, where their lives are
Dear Evan Hanson - April 2, 2019 - The winner of six Tony Awards (including Best Musical)
and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, Dear Evan Hansen is a deeply personal
and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it. A letter that was never
meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have.
Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.
Anastasia - April 30, 2019 - A musical inspired by the beloved films, Anastasia transports us
Rod McDonald presents: “Duke
Ellington, Eddie Cantor
& Jimmy Durante”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
In the early 20th century, few performers made
the transition from vaudeville to recordings and
radio better than the Duke Ellington Orchestra,
Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante. Ellington, one of
the foremost composers in the history of jazz, led
one of the longest-running bands in history (and
it’s still going) from the streets of Harlem to the
world, with top musicianship, such swinging hits as
“Satin Doll” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,”
and complex orchestral music. Cantor and
Durante became America’s most popular entertainers,
introducing “Yes, Sir That’s My Baby” and
“Makin’ Whoopee”, “Make Someone Happy”, “Inka
Dinko Do” and many more historic songs, all with
their iconic characters. Join Rod MacDonald for this
video lecture, with archival footage, research materials
and live performance, exploring the lives
and legacies of three of American music’s greatest
entertainers. Cost is $5 per person.
Thursday, December 6, 2018
Another Show”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
Marlene Solender and Peter Fuchs weave together
the story and the music of the most sophisticated
song writer of our era. You will see why people
would say to Cole Porter "You're the Top" and your
music is "C'est Magnifique". The evening is sure to
be "De'Lovely" so come on out and join us and
“Let's Do It"!! Cost is $5 per person.
Two Part Lecture Series with Dan Hudak
“When Oscar Gets It Wrong Part 1 & Part 2”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
Is Ordinary People better than Raging Bull? Is How
Green Was My Valley better than Citizen Kane?
According to the Oscars, yes! This 2-part lecture
series by film critic and professor
Dan Hudak examines the
politics, voting patterns, and
cultural influences that led the
Academy to overlook movies
we now consider classics. Cost
is $10 per person.
Thursday, January 10, 2019
Ed Hershey presents: Post War Jewish
America “Hiding in Plain Sight”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
In his memoir “The Scorekeeper”, former Newsday
reporter Edward Hershey reflects on Brooklyn roots
and Jewish culture in the 1950’s and 1960’s when
his Ocean Parkway neighborhood was “as Jewish
as Ivory soap – 99 and 44/100ths pure”. Up and
down “the Parkway”, which spanned the six miles
between Prospect Park and Brighton Beach, nearly
everyone was Jewish, reflecting a demographic
reality of midcentury New York. Banding together
was one way to counter the limitations and
indignities of bias in employment, housing, education,
and social access. Hershey’s lecture will bring
to life a time now sometimes forgotten but that
shaped his life and that of thousands in his generation.
His presentation will inform some, evoke
nostalgia in others and delight all who are proud
of their Jewish-American heritage. Cost is $5 per
person.
Thursday, January 17, 2019
Lynda Milito “My Life as a Mafia Wife”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
When Lynda Lustig, a Jewish 16-year-old high
school dropout met Italian gangster Louie Milito,
she had a taste for adventure and was happy to be
out of her domineering mother’s loveless house.
When they married, Louie was not yet a “made
man” in the powerful Gambino crime family. Over
the years, she was willing to forgive her husband
for everything: his violent rages, his frequent absences,
his shady associates and the blood on his
hands. For 24 years, Lynda Milito remained loyal
to this charming and dangerous criminal, her children’s
father and close friends of crime boss John
Gotti and underboss Sammy “The Bull” Gravano.
But in 1988, Louie Milito disappeared, murdered by
the very people he always trusted to protect him.
And now, you can share her story live and in
person! Cost is $5 per person.
Tuesday, January 22, 2019
“The Legacy of Joan Rivers”
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
Rivers was a remarkable comedian who will be remembered
the glass ceiling for women in stand-up. Rivers
woman in it but as part of that amazing time in
comedy," said her daughter Melissa. This lecture
will explore the life and career of this comedy pioneer
by means of numerous audiovisual material.
Cost is $5 per person.
Screening/discussion
presented Director Alan Feinberg
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
“Bagels Over Berlin” is a captivating documentary
based on airmen who fought in the U.S. Army Air
Corps during WWII. It provides a unique perspective
of the war, offering audiences rich insights into
the experiences of Jewish men who struggled
bravely and heroically against Nazi Germany. The
story tells incredible stories about men who never
shared what they experienced with anyone, including
their families. It dispels the erroneous views
that Jews in America in the 1930’s were disinclined
to be fighters, and definitely not war heroes. And
it validates the heroic roles so many Jewish Americans
embraced as they fought to protect the
American way of life in one of the branches of service
that suffered the highest mortality rates. This
film is about brave and patriotic Jewish American
men who became WWII war heroes. It is a story
told with both poignancy and humor. Cost is $5 per
person.
“The Nazi Titanic”
presented by Dr. Robert Watson
3:00 p.m. Main Dining Room
Dr. Robert Watson is an American scholar, researcher,
author, and lecturer. His brilliance in research
and uncovering previously untold stories of
history will keep you spellbound. Join us as he tells
the true story of the German ocean liner SS Cap
Arcona. Built in 1927, it was the greatest ship
since the RMS Titanic and one of the most celebrated
luxury liners in the world. When the Nazis
seized control in Germany, she was stripped down
for use as a floating barracks and troop transport.
The German navy used the Cap Arcona to transport
German soldiers and civilians across the
Baltic, away from the Red Army’s advance. In the
Third Reich’s final days, the ill-fated ship was
packed with thousands of concentration camp prisoners.
Without adequate water, food, or sanitary
facilities, the prisoners suffered as they waited for
the end of the war. Just days before Germany surrendered,
the Cap Arcona was mistakenly bombed
by the British Royal Air Force, and nearly all of the
prisoners were killed in the last major tragedy of
the Holocaust and one of history’s worst maritime
disasters. The Nazi Titanic is a riveting and astonishing
account of an enigmatic ship that played a
devastating role in World War II and the Holocaust.
Cost is $10 per person.
Ira Epstein presents:
The Comedy of Ellen Degeneres
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
Ellen Degeneres has done everything, from starring
in hit sitcoms and movies, to writing best-selling
books, to having her own award-winning talk
show. But she's never forgotten her roots as a
stand-up comedian. She takes the most ordinary
life events and makes us see the insanity of our
way of life. Ellen is a master of comic timing, delivery,
pacing, and helps us laugh at the foibles of
our humanity. This lecture will present some of her
most memorable comedy routines. Cost is $5 per
person.
“Best Picture Oscar Discussion” presented
by film critic Dan Hudak
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
Clips and background information about all nominated
films will be shared, and a discussion of the
Academy’s voting habits will lend perspective to
choosing the likely winner. Oscar history, trivia,
and other major categories will also be covered.
It’s a lively, insightful and fun hour-long discussion
that’s not to be missed! Note: Attendees are encouraged
“The Kitty Genovese Murder Case and How
it Sparked the 911 Emergency System”
presented by Stephen Singer Esq.
7:30 p.m. Imperial Room
It was only one of the many murders that occurred
in New York that year, but it shocked the nation.
It was the murder with 38 “witnesses” who supposedly
heard and did nothing. It was the murder
that branded New York as a cold, uncaring place
for decades thereafter…and it wasn’t true. It gave
rise to the 911 system, having EMT’s and medical
equipment on ambulances, neighborhood watch
groups and Good Samaritan Laws nationwide.
Attorney Singer’s law firm defended the man who
killed Kitty. He lived one block from the murder
scene and the trial happened across the street
from his law office! Cost is $5 per person.
