Membership
While spring has sprung
and many clown activities
are coming back to life from
the winter months, it will be
summer before you know
it; but there is still time to
prepare for International
Clown Week (ICW)
recognized August 1 – 7.
With that note, I would like
to thank Barbara “Nuzzles”
Waters-Riddle for her time,
talent, and untiring efforts
in chairing the Clown Week
committee over the past
few years. I have asked Bob
“Bunky” Gretton to fill in
as the interim chair for the
upcoming year. Bob has been
chairman in the past. See his
article on page 59. He looks
forward to reclaiming his old
position.
Congratulations to Alley
#6, Kapitol Klowns, in
winning last year’s Alley
CHARLIE Award, and to
John “Splash” Sullivan
for the Individual Award.
Both participated in many
activities for International
Clown Week 2011.
Hopefully, you and your
alley have plans for an active
Clown Week in 2012. Please
Page 10
remember one important
element of Clown Week—to
obtain public awareness. You
can do this by scheduling a
visit to your local or state
government to request they
issue a proclamation. If you
do vie for the CHARLIE
award, please make sure
you have at least one
proclamation.
When planning to submit
nominations for any awards,
(as a nominator) please
carefully read all of the
criteria. The committees for
the different awards must
follow the criteria. I ask that
you do so as well. Please
double check the website
www.coai.org under the
specific award. If it’s easier,
copy the information, break
it down, highlight it, etc., to
make sure you have followed
the rules. I would also like
to see some Excellence In
Clowning applications. It has
been a couple of years since
any have been submitted.
Criteria updates are
in the process of being
implemented. Please follow
the criteria on the website,
and then check back with the
website before you submit,
just to make sure no criteria
changes have occurred.
The COAI Board is
delighted to announce that
we began a new membership
drive on May 1, 2012. While
the previous membership
drive/contest has ended,
the new drive will proceed
until December 31, 2012.
For every new member that
YOU, as a sponsor, sign up,
two months will be added
onto YOUR membership.
Sign up six and you have
a whole year of added
membership.
The Membership Drive
and Contest that ended on
April 1, was won by Charlene
Link. Congratulations
Charlene and thank you for
the seven new members!
She recently moved from
New York to Florida and
decided she needed to start
a new COAI alley in her
area. She took advantage
of the membership drive
contest and signed up more
than enough new members
to form an alley. Way to go
Charlene! Look for more
information on the contest
and an up close and personal
interview with Charlene in an
upcoming issue the The New
Calliope.
If you are instructing
clown classes, include the
COAI membership as part of
the class fee, automatically
registering each student. This
has been a very successful
endeavor for others. What a
great educational benefit!
Kudos to each and every
member who attended the
COAI Convention in Kansas
City.
The convention was
fantastic with much
entertainment and tremendous
education.
Congratulations
to all who received awards
for competing in the different
categories. I know that
everyone benefitted by the
competitions as they are
a significant value in the
educational process.
Congratulations are in
order for Kynisha Jarreau
who won the Convention
Best in Clown Award for
competing in single skit,
single parade-ability,
character makeup, single
balloon, multiple balloon,
balloon arrangement, as
well as cheek and full-face
painting. She earned top ten
awards in all competitions,
and medaled in third place
in cheek art, second place in
character makeup, and first
place in full face painting and
single balloon twisting.
New Calliope editor, Tom
Newton, awarded Glenn
Kohlberger, the Editor’s
Choice Award for his
assistance and dedication to
the New Calliope magazine.
He also awarded the Best of
Press Award to the Rose City
Clown Alley 196 for their
great alley publication.
Everyone is already
looking ahead to Richmond,
VA, where the 2013 COAI
Convention will take place,
hosted by Virginia Clowns,
Alley 3.
Continue to support the
membership drive in 2012
and bring in new clowns
everywhere.
Don’t forget the “gifting”
opportunity that can apply to
the membership drive as well.
