Call to get Edgeware beautification project under way
• By Ashleigh Monk
“JUST GET on with it.”
This is Papanui-Innes
Community Board chairwoman
Ali Jones’ view on the proposed
Edgeware Village beautification
plans.
Ms Jones said at last week’s
community board meeting that
St Andrew’s
ladies mark
diamond
jubilee
• By Ashleigh Monk
IN 1958 a group of mothers,
grandmothers and teachers at St
Andrew’s College gathered for a
tea party.
Sixty years later, the tradition is
still going. The Ladies Circle social
group meet often to chat over
tea and fundraise for projects at
the school.
Member Alison Ballantyne
said the group was ‘overjoyed’ to
celebrate its diamond jubilee.
“It’s such a simple idea and yet
a lovely idea,” she said.

she wants the public consultation
process on the Edgeware
Village Master Plan to be
bypassed.
“Let’s just get on with what
we can do without having days,
weeks, months of ticking off
boxes.”
She said locals had been ‘overconsulted’
on the matter, and it
was time to set the upgrades in
motion.
“What we are hearing from
this community is ‘just get on
with it’,” she said.
“I think there are some things
here that if our community woke
up one morning and saw [the
changes], they would be stoked.
We might not please all of the
people but I think there are some
things that we can just get on
with.”
There has been $158,000
allocated in the Long term
Plan for the Edgeware Village
upgrades, but not all of this can
be used on beautification.
Project manager Kelly
Griffiths presented several ideas
for the beautification of the area
to the board.
The ideas included fairy lights
to be wrapped around trees,
bunting, a mural, planter boxes,
bike stands, and the replacement
of worn out signage, seats and
rubbish bins.

MORE SUCCESS on the local junior
sports front this week (see pages 8-9).
Rangi won both individual and team
medals at the Canterbury secondary
schools duathlon championships last week,
and Christchurch Girls’ Olivia Kikstra won the under-16 event.
St Andrew’s Georgia Bonne is the only South Island goalie to
make the national under-18 talent squads.
This age group is a stepping stone for higher honours – and by
that I mean world championships and Olympics.
There are five North Island goalies in the squads. But Georgia
is one determined young sportswoman – and multi-talented too
– having represented New Zealand at volleyball.
There are 12 Cantabrians named in the boys and girls talent
squads which will play in Auckland in October.

Sawyers Arms Rd repairs “shoddy”
Residents
upset over
resealing job
• By Ashleigh Monk
Aaron Campbell
PAPANUI RESIDENTS are
unhappy about a stretch of
Sawyers Arms Rd that has had
two “shoddy” resealing jobs.
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board deputy
chairman Aaron Campbell said
the section between Highsted
and Gardiners Rds was repaired
and upgraded in November, but
was resurfaced again in June
after the surface
started
breaking up.
Now the
city council
will have
to look at
repairing the
road again.
“Within seven
months,
they ripped
up and resealed the same stretch
of road,” Mr Campbell said.
“It was $10,000 for the green
paint for the bus lane which
was resurfaced over – that’s

and resealed twice in the past few months - and the work still
isn’t up to scratch.
money down the drain . . .
you’re effectively throwing out
$30,000 of materials and time
and management costs at the
minimum.”
He received an email from the
city council after he inquired
about the state of the road. It
responded saying some failures
had been identified.
“The contractors just didn’t
do the job up to scratch,” Mr
Campbell said.
Sawyers Arms Rd resident
Barbara Purvis said she was
“‘shocked” at the amount of
money wasted.
“We’re not complaining and
saying it’s got to be perfect.
What I’m complaining about
is the waste of money and the
shoddiness of the job.”
She said this was not the first
time the city council has had a
problem like this.
“Ten years ago, we had the
same sort of issue with council
not listening to residents and
putting a pedestrian island in the
wrong place. We’ve spent more
money by putting something in,
getting it wrong, pulling it out,
and putting it in again.”
City council road maintenance
manager Mark Pinner said the
work was carried out by a subcontractor
of City Care.
City Care has temporarily
repaired the road until a more
permanent solution can be
found.
“Council, as part of its own
quality checks, identified and in
turn notified our contractor that
the surface was breaking up in
isolated areas,” Mr Pinner said.
But until the cause of the
issues are determined, he said
it was not possible to say who
would be responsible for the cost
of the permanent repairs.

Heavy vehicle
ban for some
Papanui streets
• By Ashleigh Monk
HEAVY VEHICLES have been
banned from driving through
some streets in Papanui.
On Friday, the Papanui-Innes
Community Board approved a
bid to prevent heavy vehicles from
driving along parts of Mary St,
Proctor St and Grassmere St.
Trucks and other heavy vehicles
will be prohibited from driving
along the streets unless they have
planned deliveries or collections.
Board chairwoman Ali Jones
said a part of the Land Transport
Act which permitted temporary
heavy vehicle restrictions on these
streets ended on Saturday.
“[The current laws] ceased to
apply after August 11 and the
streets would have to be assessed
again – obviously costing
significant time and money –
only for the same laws to be
implemented by the city council.”
She said as part of last year’s
review of the Traffic and Parking
Bylaw, the city council added
a clause, Control of Vehicles
on Roads, as an alternative to
the Land Transport Act and
permitted it to retain existing
heavy vehicle restrictions and
create new ones.
Students experience Indonesian jungle
• By Ashleigh Monk
AFTER HIKING through a
remote jungle and diving around
coral reefs, a group of students
have a new-found respect for the
environment.
Twelve students from
Christchurch Boys’ High School
went to south-east Indonesia
to take part in a conservation
project led by NASA.
Biology teacher Simon
Brouwer, who accompanied the
students on the trip, said it was
an ‘eye-opening’ experience.
“There were certain places
you just wouldn’t get to see on a
normal holiday unless you were
incredibly intrepid,” he said.
“It could be brutal, you meet a
few little snakes and things that
you need to watch out for.”
The aim of the project, which
was hosted by conservation organisation
Operation Wallacea,
was to measure carbon emissions
from trees.
The data collected would be
used to identify and assist areas
across the world that needed
protection.
Mr Brouwer said the boys
rose to each mental and physical
challenge they encountered.
“It was a completely different
world where you’re sleeping in
hammocks and have rudimentary
toilets . . . but the boys really
liked the fact that you’re not
getting bogged down by technology.
They got to the end of it and
didn’t really want to leave.”
One of the students who went
on the trip was 17-year-old
Danny Schefer.
He said he had always been
interested in conservation, so
putting his hand up was an easy
decision.
But the trip definitely pushed
him out of his comfort zone.
“The trekking was tough going,
we were out for about five
hours each day. And the meals

were tough as well, it was just
rice with a few accessories to it.”
“As the week went on I got
used to the schedule and really
got stuck into it all.”
He said he planned on pursuing
more conservation expeditions
in the future.
“I learned not to take anything
for granted, in terms of seeing
how the environment can be
so easily destroyed. It makes
you think about how fragile the
world is.”
With over 250 people turning out
from the Waimakariri electorate
for Leader of the Opposition
Simon Bridges’s Connecting with
Communities Tour, our priorities
have certainly been heard. The
nation-wide tour has now finished,
with about 10,000 New Zealanders
sharing their views, and I was
thrilled that our residents had
a chance to have their voices
included.
New climate-change legislation
and how it will impact on how
we live, and how we as a nation
transition to a low-carbon economy,
is an issue we should all be
thinking about. I wanted to give
our residents a chance to have
their say on this important topic
and enjoyed bringing National’s
Climate Change Spokesperson
Todd Muller to the electorate for a
public meeting last week. Giving
our residents the opportunity to air
their views on the issues that affect
us all is an important priority for me
as local MP.
I have written to all our Members
of Parliament across New Zealand
as National’s Spokesperson
for Mental Health to call for a
cross-party mental-health group
to increase access to services
and which will not be affected by
changes in Government. I believe
that the mental health of New
Zealanders is more important than
party politics. We need to work on
finding common ground to help all
New Zealanders.
I am delighted to again be
sponsoring the Matt Doocey
Supreme Youth Award for
Waimakariri in the YMCA
Canterbury Youth Awards. Watch
our local media for the finalists to
be named.
I enjoy bringing my Caucus
colleagues to the electorate to
hear your views or to visit our
community groups and businesses.
If you would like me to arrange a
visit to your business or community
group, then please get in contact.

The mural was of

Rangi Ruru musical talent

RANGI RURU Girls’ School
musicians have won cash and
silver awards at two national jazz
and chamber music competitions.
Two of the school’s senior
chamber music groups competed
at the national finals of the NZCT
chamber music contest, while the
Ara Jazz Quest saw Rangi Ruru
swing with the best of them.
In the chamber music competition,
groups Matryoshka (Sarah

cello, and Valerie Xiang, piano)
and the Bohuslav Trio (Rachel
McSweeney and Lucy Costelloe,
violin, Yuna Chon, piano) were
both awarded a June Clifford
silver award, along with $500 per
group.
The prestigious contest has
been running for 53 years, with
more than 400 groups entering
nationwide this year, involving
about 1800 students.
Rangi Ruru was the only school
in New Zealand to have two
groups among the top 12 competing,
and its director of music

very deserving of their success.

Mairehau residents don’t want ‘noisy’ buses
• By Ashleigh Monk
MAIREHAU residents are upset
about a new bus route that they
say will disrupt their “peaceful”
streets.
The proposed change would
see the No 44 Shirley bus travel
to and from Innes Rd via Philpotts
Rd, Glenfield Cres, Roslyn
Ave, Croziers Rd, Ranger St and
Nancy Ave.
The planned change is set to
coincide with the opening of the
Northern Corridor, which would
no longer allow right turns by
the Orbiter bus in or out of the
QE II Drive end of Philpotts Rd.
Resch Fowler, who lives on
Nancy Ave, said the change
would disrupt residents.
“It’s very quiet, lots of small
children running around, there’s
after-school traffic and kids that
are walking home. So we don’t
want the increased traffic, we
don’t want noisy buses along
here, we don’t want the pollution,”
she said.
“We are quite concerned because
buses don’t stop in a hurry,
so if a kid darts off across the
road, they’re not used to having
a large vehicle around here.”
The proposed re-route
comes after a group of 80
retirees presented a petition
to Environment Canterbury,
pleading with it to reconsider

route changes to the Orbiter
which would see the nearest bus
stop be moved almost 1km away
from the village.
“We do understand that the
retirement home needs access
to the service but we feel like
there’s alternatives,” Ms Fowler
said.
She and several other residents
met with Christchurch Central
MP Duncan Webb on Friday to
voice their concerns.
She said they would put
forward proposals to ECan and
the city council to see if the
Orbiter’s current route could be
retained, or if a bus turn-around
point could be established on
Philpotts Rd. ECan senior
manager public transport
Stewart Gibbon said ECan was
gathering public feedback.
“We have had a good level
of engagement and feedback
from the community on the
44 proposal. The consultation
period has been extended until
24 August, and we will be
holding two drop in sessions
before then so that residents can
come along to ask any questions
they may have before they make
their submission.”
ECan plans to implement the
changes later this year.

Chemical will
kill lake weed
at The Groynes
A CHEMICAL treatment that
is harmless to fish and plant
life will be used this week to
eradicate an invasive weed
choking lakes in The Groynes.
The weed, lagrosiphon major,
which forms dense mats of vegetation,
has affected lakes at the
popular recreation reserve since
2014.
There has been concerns that
the annual Take a Kid Fishing
day, set to be held at the The
Groynes in October, might be
postponed because of the weed
infestation. The city council
commissioned environmental
consultants Boffa Miskell to
undertake a report which recommended
using the chemical
Endothall to fully eradicate the
aquatic weed.
It found the herbicide had no
known negative impacts on native
fish and plants. The reserve’s
fishing lakes were closed on
Thursday and will reopen on
August 23.
The weeds will be removed by
a mechanical harvester six weeks
after the spraying.
Environment Canterbury’s
regional biosecurity team is
working closely with city council
staff on the project.

St Andrew’s goalkeeper’s talent recognised
SUCCESS: Georgia Bonne is now a national age-group
representative in both hockey and volleyball.
• By Jacob Page
A LUNG condition hasn’t
stopped St Andrew’s College
goalie Georgia Bonne from
achieving her aspirations in the
sport.
THe 16-year-old was one of
12 Cantabrians named in the
boys and girls national under-18
talent squads to attend a camp in
Auckland in October.
Out of six goalkeepers in the
squad, she is the only one from
the South Island.
“Back in year 7 when I was at St
Margaret’s, I was playing in the
field and I was trialling for teams,
but I wasn’t very fit and with my
lung condition my coach realised
that I probably wasn’t going to
make rep teams,” Georgia said.
“I was asked if I’d try goalie
and I just loved it.”
It’s fair to say Georgia’s fitness
has improved since she has
gone on to be a New Zealand
age-group representative in
volleyball.
Georgia was on a volleyball
trip to Thailand in the weeks
leading up to the national
under-18 hockey tournament
which hampered her preparation.
“To be honest, I was thinking
I’d be the reserve goalie for
Canterbury because I was the
youngest one there, but I ended
up starting in that tournament,”
she said.
Canterbury were runners-up in
the tournament, losing the final

in a penalty shoot-out.
Georgia said she was eager to
test herself against the best agegroup
talent in the country and
she wasn’t afraid to speak up if
her defence needed it.
“I’m a competitive person so
I will say my bit, but off the
field it’s all good . . . it’s just the
game.
“THe camp is a chance to see
where I’m at nationally and work
on things I need to improve on,”
she said.
Georgia believes playing
volleyball and being a goalie
helps her athleticism in both
sports.
“Hockey isn’t as physical as
volleyball but I use the same
skills to block shots as I do diving
on the volleyball court so it
works well for me,” she said.

REMARKABLE CONCERT EXPERIENCE
THE NZSO AND THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION!
TO CELEBRATE their 20th year e
Phoenix Foundation have joined forces
with the NZSO for a remarkable concert
experience.
e Phoenix Foundation is one of the
most iconic New Zealand bands of the 21st
century. Formed in Wellington in the late-
90s, they have been lauded here and
overseas and feted by rock royalty, from
Neil Finn and Jarvis Cocker to Iggy Pop.
e band has also contributed to several
movie soundtracks, including film-maker
Taika Waititi’s celebrated box office smash
Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
If you are not yet familiar with their
music, you are in for a treat; if you are, you
are likely to encounter their most
challenging and assured set of songs yet.
From the soaring soundscape of opener
“Mountain” and the frantic, joyful surge of
the David Fridmann (e Flaming Lips,
Tame Impala)-mixed “Bob Lennon, John
Dylan”, through to the trippy, delicate
“Prawn” and “Myth”, and the self-styled
manifesto of sorts that is the title track,
this is the sound of a band at the top of
their game, making music that is every bit
as enjoyable as it is detailed and wellcraed.
And with a substantial back catalogue of
much-loved songs from their five previous
albums – “Horsepower”, “Pegasus”, “Happy
Ending”, “Buffalo” and “Fandango” – to
draw from, they are a band who have
earned their place in the hearts and minds
of their audience, and who are equal parts
charm, hard work and inspiration, and
who fully deserve your attention, just as
you fully deserve the wonderful music they
make.
Drawing from their much loved
catalogue, e Phoenix Foundation and
Orchestra will perform unique
arrangements of audience favourites and
deep album cuts.
It will also be a rare opportunity to hear
their soundtrack work performed live.
e NZSO and e Phoenix Foundation
perform in Christchurch at the Isaac
eatre Royal on ursday 30 August 2018.
7pm start. Tickets on sale now at Ticketek.
