ISSUE 380 - AUGUST 15 2018
Head Over Heels at the Hudson
Theatre was destined to become a
phenomenal treasure and a vibrant
awakening filled with energy and
attitude from the very moment
the curtain opened. Riveting and
captivating, the musical was a
complete sanctuary.
The Elizabethan love story, disguised
with comedic foreplay and songs
from Belinda Carlisle and The Go-
Go’s, features a relevant, powerful
and titanic message pertaining to the
antiquated fashion that a large sum of
society views of the less public facets
of the LGBTQ community.
Based upon “The Countess of
Pembroke’s Arcadia” by Sir Philip
Sidney, the play touched on
lesbian and transgender people,
crossdressers and drag queens, and
flirted with tasteful sexual innuendos
and salacious topics in the best and
funniest way possible. It emotionally
touched the hearts and minds of the
audience in a colorful way, with a
surprising and forgiving finale.
In adults with HIV on ART who have diarrhea not caused by an infection
Tired of planning your life around diarrhea?
Enough is Enough
Get relief. Pure and simple. Ask your doctor about Mytesi.
Mytesi (crofelemer):
• Is the only medicine FDA-approved to relieve diarrhea in people with HIV
• Treats diarrhea differently by normalizing the flow of water in the GI tract
• Has the same or fewer side effects as placebo in clinical studies
• Comes from a tree sustainably harvested in the Amazon Rainforest
What is Mytesi?
Mytesi is a prescription medicine that helps relieve symptoms of diarrhea not caused by an
infection (noninfectious) in adults living with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Important Safety Information
Mytesi is not approved to treat infectious diarrhea (diarrhea caused by bacteria, a virus,
or a parasite). Before starting you on Mytesi, your healthcare provider will first be sure that
you do not have infectious diarrhea. Otherwise, there is a risk you would not receive the
right medicine and your infection could get worse. In clinical studies, the most common
side effects that occurred more often than with placebo were upper respiratory tract
(sinus, nose, and throat) infection (5.7%), bronchitis (3.9%), cough (3.5%), flatulence
(3.1%), and increased bilirubin (3.1%).
What Is Mytesi (crofelemer)?
Mytesi is a prescription medicine used to
improve symptoms of noninfectious diarrhea
(diarrhea not caused by a bacterial, viral,
or parasitic infection) in adults living with
HIV/AIDS on ART.
Do Not Take Mytesi if you have diarrhea
caused by an infection. Before you start
Mytesi, your doctor and you should make sure
your diarrhea is not caused by an infection
(such as bacteria, virus, or parasite).
Possible Side Effects of Mytesi Include:
• Upper respiratory tract infection (sinus, nose,
and throat infection)
• Bronchitis (swelling in the tubes that carry air
to and from your lungs)
• Cough
• Flatulence (gas)
• Increased bilirubin (a waste product when
red blood cells break down)
For a full list of side effects, please talk to your
doctor. Tell your doctor if you have any side
effect that bothers you or does not go away.
You are encouraged to report negative
side effects of prescription drugs to the
FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or
call 1-800-FDA-1088.
Should I Take Mytesi If I Am:
Pregnant or Planning to Become Pregnant?
• Studies in animals show that Mytesi could
harm an unborn baby or affect the ability to
become pregnant
• There are no studies in pregnant women
taking Mytesi
• This drug should only be used during
pregnancy if clearly needed
A Nursing Mother?
• It is not known whether Mytesi is passed
through human breast milk
• If you are nursing, you should tell your doctor
before starting Mytesi
• Your doctor will help you to decide whether
to stop nursing or to stop taking Mytesi
Under 18 or Over 65 Years of Age?
• Mytesi has not been studied in children
under 18 years of age
• Mytesi studies did not include many people
over the age of 65. So it is not clear if this
age group will respond differently. Talk to
your doctor to fi nd out if Mytesi is right
for you
With Other Medicines?
If you are taking any prescription or over-thecounter
“Last Lesson” is the second short
film by actor/filmmaker Badar, and is
available now on Revry.TV.
You might recognize Badar from
the Melissa McCarthy film “Identity
Thief.” Though based in Atlanta,
Badar has roots in New York. His
family migrated to NYC from Abu
Dhabi when he was nine. They
lived in Buffalo for two years before
making the move down south. He
now works in Atlanta’s growing
film production industry, while also
creating personal projects like “Last
Lesson.”
What inspired you to make Last
Lesson?
The marriage equality ruling was
passed, but I remember continuous
media reports of businesses refusing
service to gay and lesbian customers,
or job discrimination. Unless one is a
victim of this firsthand, we only hear
about these injustices after the fact.
I wanted to make a film that would
show what it looks like the moment
someone is fired because of their
orientation.
What is the film about?
“Last Lesson” is a 10-minute short
drama, and tells the story of a piano
instructor, Carmen, who is fired from
teaching her student because she
is a lesbian. At its core, the film is a
reflection on society and how the
power of influence can affect us in
our lives. It is also about bringing
awareness to job discrimination
against members of the LGBTQ
communities.
Any production challenges?
When making a film, you will
face multiple obstacles. Several
actresses turned down the lead
role of Carmen, because they
weren’t comfortable playing a
lesbian. Currently I am the only
Pakistani-American filmmaker
in Atlanta’s independent film
community. Support is important,
and as an independent filmmaker
I had very little. I was addressing a
controversial issue, and I think this
frightened people from working
on “Last Lesson.” However, the
collaborative efforts of the cast and
crew eventually came together, and I
persevered in the end.
Where can people watch the film?
They can watch it on Revry.TV, an
LGBTQ digital streaming service
platform. Due to the success of “Last
Lesson” at film festivals and the
positive social media reaction, Revry
reached out to me and requested
a screener to watch. They liked it
and offered me the chance for “Last
Lesson” to be included among the
short films category. I was honored to
sign with them.
What’s next for you?
Currently I am writing my first feature
screenplay. It will focus on Indian-
Pakistani communities living in
Atlanta—a group which is a growing
part of the city, but also extremely
underrepresented and ignored. I will
also continue to freelance as an art
department assistant and contribute
my skills on local productions.

THOMAS
DRUGS
TALKS
ABOUT:
LGBTQ individuals,
compared to
heterosexuals, are more
likely to use alcohol and
drugs, have substance
abuse issues and continue
heavy drinking later
in life. Much of this is
thought to be explained
by Minority Stress Theory,
which broadly states that
individuals of sexually
marginalized groups
experience elevated levels
of stress.
Many LGBTQ individuals
reach for substances to
find the comfort and
acceptance we’re not
always able to in other
ways. I’m not anti-drugs,
but we need to talk about
why they’re being used
and find other ways to
fill the voids. Personally,
I would love to never
have to log onto social
media again and see that
someone I know has OD’d
and died.
I’ve known my best
friend and now
roommate for six years.
A bit ago I noticed he
was staying up all night,
picking his skin, pacing
around the apartment,
and he eventually lost his
job (his parents now pay
his rent). I finally asked
him what was going on
and he enthusiastically
told me he started doing
meth. I’m worried about
him. What can I do? -
Male, Gay, 27
I would begin with
talking to him about
your concerns, which
it sounds like there are
plenty of. This is someone
you’ve known for a while,
so you should have a
decent guess about what
response to expect.
Depending, your next
move is to do what’s best
for you both. If it’s the
living situation you want to
change, then one of you
may have to move out.
If it’s his substance use,
you’re going to need help
from others. He’s an adult,
and you have no control
over what he does, but his
parents pay his rent, so
they have leverage.
There is a huge difference
between someone
casually using a substance
and someone not being
able to take care of
themselves. If this is
someone you sincerely
care about, and you
fear for his safety, you
may have to put your
friendship at risk. A big
part of friendship is
honesty, so be honest with
him.
I love my friends, and
hanging out with them
on the weekends is
great, but more and
more all we do is go out
and do coke or molly. I’m
not going to lie, I enjoy
it, I just don’t want to do
it all the time. How can
I keep my friends but
get them to stop doing
so many drugs? - Male,
Gay, 25
Unfortunately, we can’t
just make our friends do
what we want them to;
however, I’m curious to
know what conversations
you’ve had with your
friends about this. Have
you proposed other
activities to do that don’t
involve drugs? What else
do you have in common
that you can do aside from
drugs? Furthermore, what
would your substance use
look like ideally?
Just because your friends
are doing them doesn’t
mean you have to. If every
time you do an activity
you have to be fucked
up, maybe the activity in
itself just isn’t that fun.
NYC is huge, and there is
no reason you can’t have
more than one friend
group. It’s possible to find
friends that don’t use the
substances you’re trying
to cut back on.
Water Off a Duck’s Back
The other night, my boyfriend
J had dinner with some old
classmates, including H.
H and J dated briefly while
I was dating someone else.
Even then, H could tell that J
was more into me, something
that he brought up when J
broke things off.
Around 9 p.m., after dinner,
J texted me that they were
all getting drinks, so I
asked, “Did you want me to
come with?” By the time he
answered yes, I was already
dressed in my new black
leather Rag & Bone shorts,
strutting downtown.
I met them at 9th Ave Saloon,
going up to J and hugging
him from behind. “Hey, whawhat
doya want, whateva you
want, Igotit,” he mumbled
drunkenly, smiling. So it was
gonna be that kind of night.
While he ordered me a
cranberry vodka, H spied
me and sauntered over. “It’s
good to see you again,”
he slurred, holding a dark
cocktail. “I’ve never been
here—but when J and I
dated, we shut down the bar
across the street one night.”
Bringing up memories to
intimidate me: nice try. I
nodded. “He’s treating you
right, isn’t he?”
“Did you think he wouldn’t?”
“No, I mean, you know—I
just want him to be happy.
I want both of you to be
happy.” Just when I thought
maybe he’d gotten over it,
an older man that looked
like Ned Flanders from The
Simpsons walked by, several
feet behind him. H lurched
forward dramatically, as if
Ned Flanders pushed him,
and the red cocktail drenched
me from my nipple to my
knee.
“Oh, fuck you!” he said,
making a big show. Ned
Flanders looked back, saw
H’s bloodshot eyes, and kept
walking out the door. “Fuck
him,” he said again to me.
“It’s really OK,” I mumbled.
My boyfriend was deep in
conversation, oblivious.
While I dried off with cocktail
napkins, shorts already
sticking to my thigh, H
asked my boyfriend outside.
Through the clear door, I
watched H make big gestures
with his arms. My boyfriend
looked uncomfortable, but
not in need of saving, so I
kept an alert distance.
When they came back inside,
H went to the bar and put his
head down on the counter.
The bartender looked around
as if he were looking for H’s
mom to take him home.
“Time to go,” J nodded.
He paid his bar tab and we
walked toward the subway.
“What did he say to you out
there?” I asked, lacing my
fingers through his.
“He wanted to know why I
thought you were better than
him,” he shrugged. “I just
told him I felt how I felt, and
that I couldn’t force myself to
feel anything that I didn’t.” I’d
been H, many times before,
and knew exactly how he felt.
Which is maybe the reason I
let the night slide off me like
hard liquor running off my
leg.
He tried to apologize the
next day, which we ignored.
Though I really should send
him my dry-cleaning bill.
