TRAVIS SHUMAKE LIVES LIFE ON THE FAST TRACK
“People cannot wrap their heads around
drag racing being something that is not
drag queen related,” reflects NHRA racer
Travis Shumake.

He has the distinction of being the fastest
gay driver in motorsports history, and last
month, Travis Shumake took several steps
in his journey to being the first openly-gay
owner of a major American motorsports
team. He purchased his own hot rod (that
he named Judith Light!), as well as a truck
and race hauler, and moved into a race shop
space in Brownsburg, Indiana.
Home for Shumake remains NYC. He and
his partner Daryl moved here five years ago
and love that they can eat dinner at Arriba
Arriba, finish a bottle of wine at Elmo and
even dance at Hush without ever being
recognized. We spoke with Travis Shumake
from his apartment in the financial district.
INTERVIEW
Hello, Travis. Congratulations on
being named the fastest LGBTQ+
driver in motorsports history!
My sport is the fastest, by almost
100 MPH. It takes 24 NASCAR
engines or 12 Formula One engines
to match the power of my single
engine.
Who did you beat out?
The next fastest driver would be
Zach Herrin, who races at around
200 MPH, so 120 MPH less than
my 319 MPH record.

Is there a camaraderie between LGBTQ+
racers?
There are different forms of racing and
motorsports around the world. There’s
Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and NHRA
drag racing, which I am a part of. We help
each other out. I help other racers with
sponsorship materials and I share outreach
strategies and ideas for their social medias.
It’s amazing to have friends to talk to who are
experiencing the same challenges on and off
the track.
What are some of the challenges?
The biggest hurdle is the sponsors. There is
a lot of lip service to the LGBTQ+ community
when it comes to corporate spending.
As a gay man, do you feel welcome in
racing?
For a lot of folks, I’m their introduction to the gay
community. I was protested by the Westboro
Baptist Church last year. That raised a lot of
eyebrows, but didn’t bother me at all. I asked if
I could keep the signs! My fellow competitors
understand the value I bring to the growth of our
sport. While they may not agree politically, they
support me being there.
Did your being gay play a role in your
decision to become a team owner?
When I was told by my previous team owner
that I needed to tone down the gay and stop
using my signature rainbow parachutes, it lit a
fire in me like never before. I felt like Elle Woods
in Legally Blonde: “I’ll show you how valuable
Elle Woods can be!” and I stomped out of the
race shop. Now, as the first openly gay owner
of a major American motorsports team, I can do
whatever I want for the LGBTQ+ community.
I can auction off experiences for non-profits, I
can bring the dragster to Pride events, I can hire
LGBTQ+ crew members, I can be sponsored by
Gun Oil…It’s my ship now, baby!
You named your car Judith Light. Does
that make you the Danny Pintauro of the
raceway?
I guess it does! Everyone names their cars
something stupid like “El Guapo” or “Terminator
5.” Judith popped up on an episode of Poker
Face and I knew instantly it was my new
dragster’s name. Ms. Light is an icon and she
uses her power and influence to support the
LGBTQ+ community, as I plan to do.

industry and, looking
to 2024, I am currently
completely unsponsored.
I have a sports agent, a
publicist, everything a straight
guy would have to get
sponsors and I have yet to
crack the door open on a big
corporate check. Motorsports
sponsors don’t want to take
a risk on pissing off their
consumer base by putting
their name on my car. Thanks,

will test you for HBV. If you have
both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may

taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop

as they will need to check your
health regularly for several months,
and may give you HBV medicine.
ABOUT BIKTARVY
BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day
prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1
in adults and children who weigh at least
55 pounds. It can either be used in people
who have never taken HIV-1 medicines
before, or people who are replacing
their current HIV-1 medicines and whose
healthcare provider determines they meet
certain requirements.
BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS.
HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS.
Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take

symptoms: weakness or being more
tired than usual, unusual muscle
pain, being short of breath or fast
breathing, stomach pain with nausea
and vomiting, cold or blue hands and
feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a
fast or abnormal heartbeat.
Severe liver problems, which in rare
cases can lead to death. Tell your
healthcare provider right away
if you get these symptoms: skin or
the white part of your eyes turns
yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine,
light-colored stools, loss of appetite
for several days or longer, nausea, or
stomach-area pain.
The most common side effects of
BIKTARVY in clinical studies were
diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and
headache (5%).
These are not all the possible side effects
of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare

REACHING FOR THE STARS
Irene Michaels has been entertaining people throughout her life for over
six decades. As a lifelong participant in the entertainment industry, she
has danced, modeled, authored books, shared lifestyle and life-changing
beauty secrets, and acted. She is renowned for her recurring role as
a nurse in the celebrated soap opera “General Hospital” and has also
appeared in movies, including the cult film “Killer Klowns From Outer
Space,” “Home Alone 2,” and “Mahogany,” to name just a few.
Most recently, Irene has shifted her focus to singing, writing, and recording
music, with a particular emphasis on House Music. Her song “I Like Rain,”
released via the iconic record label Trax, has earned her a Josie Award,
and her latest pop recording, “What the World Needs Now,” is under
consideration for a Grammy. She is also on the Grammy Ballot for Best
New Artist. Get Out reached out to Irene for a heartfelt conversation...

Hi, Irene! What inspired you
to begin your house music
journey, and why never
before this during your
career?
The music scene has always
been a huge part of my life. I
enjoy writing my own songs
and singing covers. A few
years ago, my band, Our
House, began performing live
at some of the best known
cabaret and jazz venues
throughout Chicagoland. At
some point, I was approached
by Rachael Cain, owner of TRAX
Records, with an intriguing opportunity
to dip my toe in the House Music genre.
While it was certainly not an obvious path
for me, she was convinced that I would be
great, so I took my best shot! And, to my
happy surprise, I just love it! Sometimes
life takes you down a different path than
you expected, and I have found that if I
am open to trying new things, life really is
amazing, and I live every day to its fullest
on and off the stage.
What is it that attracts you to house
music?
Being a dancer my whole life, my body is
in tune with the rhythm and beat of music.
Performing house music makes me
want to dance and brings me back
to my younger years. I love being
a woman my age and having the
energy and flexibility to move and
groove with the best of them.
What other genres of music are
you exploring as a singer and
why?
I am interested in a certain sound
more than a genre per se. Lately,
I’ve also been doing some detailed
research on Stevie Nicks and why
so many loved her sound…which is
unusual. Also, Joni Mitchell. I love
the earthy type!
Knowing what you know now,
what advice would you give to
baby Irene?
I was a very active and adventurous
baby. Let’s just say I kept my mom
very busy. My favorite place to play
was in our pantry. I would put every
single pot on my head and parade
around the house, complete with
a spoon and fork serving as my
instrument.

My natural tendency to be
a part of the social scene
started around age six.
I used to disappear out
the front door and go for
a walk by myself, talking
to all the neighbors as if I
was interviewing them and
my mother would have to
come and find me. And, If
I wasn’t doing that, I was
playing dress up or running
my own lemonade stand.
I craved adventure and
exploring new things. I have
remained that way my entire
life. Sometimes, it means I
want to do too much at the
same time. That can be a
good thing and a curse...So,
my advice to my younger
self would be to slow down
just a tad and really focus
on one thing at a time. Keep
that love of adventure, but
try to enjoy each minute a
little more before moving
onto the next.
Where do you hope your
music career will take
you?
I would love for the world to
hear my music and share
my love for this amazing
form of expression. I plan
to continue recording and
performing for as long as I
can. One day, my dream is
to win a Grammy award!
Aside from music, you
have other interests and
careers. Please fill us in.
You may not know this,
but I am an accomplished
equestrian, having ridden
and competed most of
my life. Still to this day,
spending a day at the barn
with my horse is one of
my greatest pleasures.
I also enjoy working the
red carpet, being a part
of the social scene, and
supporting many charitable
organizations. Lastly, but
certainly not least, I love to
travel all over the world with
my husband and experience
the different cultures. Seeing
new things and learning
more about the world
around me is extremely
valuable to me.
What artist or artists are
you currently influenced
by musically?
There are many artists that
have influenced me. Some
you may not have even
heard of; however, the top
four are Judy Garland, Lady
Gaga, Barbra Streisand,
and Dolly Parton.
What do you admire
most about the LGBTQ
audience?
The freedom to be creative
and have fun during a
performance. The fact that
nothing is off limits inspires
me to really get into the
music and connect with
the crowd. And, of course,
being an arbiter of style
and fashion throughout
my life, their personal flair
and unique viewpoints are
a valuable addition to the
world of entertainment.
What is new on the
horizon?
I have been nominated for
awards for my cover of the
iconic anthem, What the
World Needs Now is Love,
by Jackie DeShannon. I will
be performing more shows
nationally and even globally;
shows are in the works for
London in early 2024. I’d
very much like to tour the
gay clubs in NYC, LA and
Chicago, perhaps judge a
drag show in each of those
cities--I have some plans for
Pride 2024. There are some
more things in the works
that I am very excited about,
but the details are still being
ironed out, so stay tuned!

LADY CLOVER HONEY BRINGS
DRAG AND HORROR TOGETHER
HORRIFYING, BUT STILL FABULOUS

Horror film monsters, serial slashers
and villains do not have to always be
masculine. The new indie, horror short
film DRAG TO DEATH is proof of this
in a very off-the-wall way! DRAG TO
DEATH, written by and starring drag
performer Clover Welsh, will have its
world premiere on Wednesday November
15th at RockBar, 185 Christopher Street,
New York City at 9 PM. This will follow the
FINAL EXAM Horror Trivia event hosted by
FANGORIA horror and cult magazine at 7
PM on the same night. DRAG TO DEATH
will also be broadcast by the TV series
RYAN REPORTING on MNN, Manhattan
Neighborhood Network cable station, while
being globally streamed on MNN Culture
Channel 4 on November 27th at 10 PM.

The plot involves a drag queen who gets
someone to impersonate her to provide a
false alibi when murdering her husband.
But makeup can’t mask the horrors in heels
that unfold. “Horror and drag work very
well together” says Welsh, who also goes
by the name Lady Clover Honey. “Both are
outrageous, campy, over-the-top and aren’t
afraid to go beyond the viewers’ comfort
level.” DRAG TO DEATH gets inspiration
from ALL ABOUT EVE, DRESSED TO KILL
and obviously (when you see Welsh’s
breasts) ELVIRA’S HAUNTED HILLS.
Cross-dressing and gender nonconforming
characters have been part of
the horror genre since PSYCHO in 1960.
And continuing with HOMICIDAL, THE
COMEBACK, DRESSED TO KILL, TERROR
TRAIN, DEADLY BLESSING, SLEEPAWAY
CAMP and others. Also worth mentioning
are the infamous horror drag personas
in Ryan Murphy’s AMERICAN HORROR
STORY–HOTEL, Charles Busch’s DIE,
MOMMY DIE, Lloyd Kaufman’s TERROR
FIRMER and most notably, THE ROCKY
HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
Appearing in DRAG TO DEATH is
filmmaker/journalist/actor Jed Ryan
(LAVENDER AFTER DARK), who previously
collaborated with Welsh on the awardwinning
comedy short film MODEST MALE
EXPOSURE, a mockumentary about public
nudity. Actors Ryan Wolowaki and Anu
Singh, who also appeared in MODEST
MALE EXPOSURE, are again with Welsh
and Ryan in DRAG TO DEATH. Wolowski
also brings us RYAN REPORTING, an
event/nightlife TV series on Manhattan
Neighborhood Network since 2006.
Also in the cast is Gladiola Gladrags,
known for being a Sister of Perpetual
Indulgence who was in MORE TALES OF
THE CITY. Rounding out the cast are Ike
Avelli (LOOSE LIPS), Wendy Stuart (IF
THESE WALLS COULD TALK) and Tym
Moss (LOOSE LIPS and IF THESE WALLS
COULD TALK), who are actors as well as
comedians and talk-show hosts. Avelli and
Moss additionally bring us the renowned
live comedy/variety cabaret showcase 50
SHADES OF GAY. Stuart is also the author
of the best-selling memoir SHE’S THE
LAST MODEL STANDING.
DRAG TO DEATH has cinematography,
editing, graphics and F/X by Dana Bryan,
aka Brian Brennan, who is known as the
creator of the original Latino Fan Club,
male adult entertainment videos. Bryan
and Welsh also recently created ATTACK
OF THE AMAZING COLOSSAL STUD, a
sci-fi, horror parody with Welsh in drag
introducing a classic story with archival
Fan Club footage. COLOSSAL STUD
contains no penetration or sex acts, but
has nudity, comedy and larger-than-life
visuals.
DRAG TO DEATH, filmed in New York City
and Jersey City, provides entertainment
to thrill-seeking horror fans, as well as
cult, comedy, underground film and drag
aficionados.
