The Port Clinton Art Festival celebrates 35 years
Submitted by Amy Amdur
Festival Founder and Director
The 35th annual Port
Clinton Art Festival comes
to Highland Park on Saturday
and Sunday, August 25
and 26. This much loved
annual tradition brings artists
from all over the country
to downtown Highland
Park for a weekend of fun
and culture.
The festival was started
with just 40 artists, it was
one of many events created
the year that Port Clinton
Square opened. It’s hard to
believe that 35 years have
gone by since then.
As the years have
passed, the festival has
grown in size and quality
to its position as one of the
top outdoor art festivals in
the country. Artists nationwide
apply every year with
images of their art, as well
as images of their booth
presentation. A group of art
professionals reviews and
scores all of the entries, and
only the top scoring artists
are invited to participate.
Every year, the Port Clinton
Art Festival is an entirely
new show, with only
the award winners from
the previous year automatically
invited back.
A youth division was
started many years ago to
give area youth a chance to
show and sell their art.
Over the years, we have
created an area of the festival
that we call the Taste of
Highland Park and More,
where we feature the “art
of cuisine” of our wonderful
Highland Park area restaurants
along with those in
neighboring communities.
The Taste now opens the
festival weekend on Friday,
along with music on the
main stage.
A few years ago, we added
a non-profit area to the
festival for local non-profit
organizations to show the
art of their good work, and
it’s been extremely well received.
When people ask what
changes there have been
throughout the last 35
years, I can answer that
the world has changed. 35
years ago, we did not have
smart phones. Our artist
lists were kept on typed
sheets. Digital photography
did not exist. So, really
the question is what hasn’t
changed.
The passion that artists
have for their art has not
changed. There is, and always
has been, a passion
that artists have to make
their art; be it paintings, or
DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 26
Crowds at the Port Clinton Art Festival in 2017. Photo submitted
sculpture, jewelry or wearables,
artists love to create.
And, people love to look
at art. Some look casually,
some critically. Some look
to buy, some look to give.
I love going to people’s
homes and offices and
seeing art that I know was
found at the Port Clinton
Art Festival. The festival itself,
and the art at the festival,
really touches people’s
lives.
Trends in art have come
and gone; as is the way
with art. Current trends include
upcycling materials
into art, as Amy Manning
does with her upcycled
wood windows. The influence
of graffiti and street
art is also easily seen in art
today. We’re very excited
that this year’s festival includes
two Highland Park
residents — photographers
Mark Hersch and Howard
Tator.
New this year is the
launch of our Highland
Park Landmark Photo Contest,
where the community
is invited to be the artist
and submit their favorite
images of Highland Park
to the festival. We also
have the Fest Photo Challenge
where we invite the
public to take images at the
fest and submit them. Both
contests will be judged, and
prizes will be awarded.
Also, new this year is
the Highland Park “Hands
Together” Mural Project.
Kids and adults of all ages
are invited to add their
hand print to a community
mural showing that Highland
Park is a community
of unique individuals that
is stronger and more unified
together. Each participant
will receive an 8-by-8
inch square and a choice
of paint colors to create a
hand print. The hand prints
will become part of a 4-by-
8 foot mural which will be
displayed in the community.
Painting can be messy,
so please dress accordingly.
The Highland Park “Hands
Together” project will take
place from 12–1 p.m., both
Saturday and Sunday.
There will be live entertainment
throughout the
entire weekend beginning
at 5 pm on Friday with
the Battle of the Bands,
followed by the Saturday
June Band 6:30-8 p.m. and
Standing Room Only 8-10
p.m.
On Saturday, the live
entertainment line-up includes
Check with Lucy,
The Whose Who: The Who
Tribute Band, and Class of
68, and on Sunday Check
with Lucy returns along
with Railheart.
Restaurants participating
in the Taste of Highland
Park include such favorites
as Michaels, Judy’s Pizza,
Backyard Grill, Onion Garden,
Tamales, Real Urban
BBQ, Beelow’s, Ravinia
Brewing, Phoenecia, Sunset,
Casa de Issac and Jade
Café.
As the years pass, and as
those who attended as children,
now bring their own
children, I thank all who
have helped along the way,
those who have enjoyed
the festival, those who
have supported the artists,
and those who appreciate
the blood, sweat, and tears
that go into making the Port
Clinton Art Festival something
special in our community.
I look forward to seeing
you.
