North Shore School District 112 Board of Education
Update given on summer
construction projects at schools
Erin Yarnall, Editor
While students were on
summer break, construction
crews were hard at
work, making improvements
on all nine of the
schools in North Shore
School District 112.
Members of the district’s
administration and board
of education received updates
on the construction
from Joseph Slattery, a
project executive at Gilbane
Building Company at
its regular meeting Tuesday,
Aug. 7.
An original contract was
signed with Boller Construction
to complete the
work for $3.66 million at
all nine schools.
“Like most summer programs,
we’re going down
to the wire,” Slattery said
about the work that still
needs to be completed before
classes resume Aug.
20.
Some schools, like Braeside
Elementary School,
only had minor work done,
including an enhancement
made to the parking lot,
an office conversion and
the re-purposing of existing
closets for medical enhancements.
Edgewood Middle
School, on the other hand,
had an excessive amount
of work done, including
the renovation of locker
rooms, adding an ADA accessible
ramp and loading
dock and the replacement
of a broken sewer line,
which ran under a hallway
in the school.
Slattery said he expects
all of the work to be done,
besides minor work that
will be finished over winter
break, to be finished by
Aug. 20.
Superintendent Michael
Lubelfeld also spoke at
the meeting about the long
range planning committee
he is heading, and their
plans to get community
members involved in the
future of the district.
During a five-hour meeting
with the committee,
Lubelfeld discussed the
pros and cons of operating
either nine schools, eight
schools or seven-schools.
“We’re going to start
to test that with the community,
because I’m expecting
some people are
going to have some strong
feelings about that and we
want to hear them,” Lubelfeld
said.
The district is sending
out a ThoughtExchange
Don’t just
list your
real estate
property...
survey, to get feedback
from the community on
how many schools they
believe the district should
have in operation.
The board also approved
changes to the academic
calendar for the 2018-2019
school year.
While a previous board
voted to attend school on
Columbus Day, students
will not attend school on
the holiday in the upcoming
school year, in order to
have the district’s calendar
align with Township High
School District 113’s calendar.
“We approved our
2018-2019 school calendar
last September,” Monica
Schroeder, the deputy
superintendent said. “District
113 amended their
calendar to observe Columbus
Day. It came to
our attention at the last
board meeting that we had
not been aware of them
amending their calendar.
Being that our students
from the high school were
going to be off, and teachers,
parents, we thought it
would be in our best interests
to also observe the
Columbus Day holiday,
known in our district as
Fall break.”
