Erin Yarnall, Editor Throughout the month of August, Nicasa has been opening the doors of their Highland Park office to welcome anyone struggling with a gambling addiction for a session on how to overcome their addictions. Each session is hosted by Brian Meister, a gambling counselor at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. Meister wanted to host these sessions after realizing the lack of resources for gambling addicts in Illinois, compared to other addictions. “If you wanted to find treatment for someone with substance abuse issues in Lake County, in Chicagoland, in the country, you have many, many options,” Meister said. “If you want to go to an AA meeting in Chicagoland, there’s 4,000 a week. Gamblers Anonymous has 60 meetings in the whole state.” The sessions run every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Nicasa’s Highland Park office, which serves as their headquarters for gambling outreach. Although the meetings are held in Highland Park, Meister hopes to spread awareness about gambling addiction throughout Lake County. “It’s a hidden disease, but we know there’s possibilities,” Meister said. Nicasa wanted to hold these sessions after hearing about the high rates of suicide among gambling addicts. “Gamblers have the highest suicide rate, and it’s because they don’t kill themselves physically,” Meister said. “They’re not breaking their organs like an alcoholic, and sometimes the financial devastation is life-long.” Ultimately, Meister said there is hope for addicts, and he hopes they and their families can learn from the discussions started at these sessions. According to a press release from the school, Mahoney stepped away from his position to pursue other professional opportunities. The former athletic director and 1990 graduate of the school had been the athletics leader of the school since 2003. “We are very grateful to Mr. Mahoney for his many years of dedicated service to Loyola,” said Loyola Academy President Father Patrick McGrath in the press release. “We wish him nothing but great success in the next chapter of his professional journey. Athletic programs have grown considerably during his tenure, and he has worked tirelessly to help advance the mission of Loyola.” McGrath announced Aug. 8 that Genevieve Baisley Atwood, of Wilmette, vice president of admissions and enrollment, will assume the duties as Loyola’s interim athletic director effective Aug. 15. The departure comes a few months after the school fired former girls soccer head coach Craig Snower over allegations that he made inappropriate comments toward players during his time as coach. Investigations by The Wilmette Beacon and Wilmette Police Department into the allegations showed that Snower made sexual comments toward players. The police investigation concluded Mahoney was not aware of any of these sexual comments made toward players, but parents had approached him about not being comfortable with their children playing for Snower. THE WINNETKA CURRENT Potential Lincoln Avenue arcade seeks Village, Zoning Code amendments Winnetka’s Village Code currently prohibits coin-operated amusement devices, but that could change in response to an applicant’s request to bring a “high-end boutique arcade” to Winnetka. During its Tuesday, Aug. 7 meeting, the Winnetka Village Council considered an application from Hoffmann Commercial Real Estate, which seeks to bring an arcade to a tenant space at 552 Lincoln Ave. Bringing the arcade to the Village would require amendments to the Village Code, which currently prohibits coin-operated amusement devices, in addition to a Zoning Code amendment permitting an amusement arcade establishment in what is classified as a General Retail Commercial District. Dan Burns, senior manager with Hoffmann Commercial Real Estate, said a majority of the games would be for children ages 4-12, with a small number of arcade games for adults to play. Burns said the proposed arcade at 552 Lincoln Ave. won’t be a “run-ofthe-mill arcade.” “It’s going to be nice flooring, nicely decorated with the top games that are out there right now,” he said. Burns said the space would likely feature somewhere between 15-20 arcade games, including some that dispense tickets, which can be redeemed for various prizes. He added he also wants to work with area restaurants to cater birthday parties at the location. Burns said the arcade is just “one piece of the puzzle” in the property at 552 Lincoln Ave. “What we really want to do is bring children, young families down there which we feel are kind of underserved in that area right now,” he said. “We want to use that as a catalyst to bring new energy to the street, just attract more foot traffic.” Reporting by Fouad Egbaria, Freelance Reporter.
