A major redevelopment of the Spartans’ four back gyms in the school is expected to mostly be completed by the time school starts. The changes involved removing a wall separating the two middle gyms to create a large middle gym while also adding new lighting and flooring to all the gyms. Most of the project is expected to be done by the start of school on Aug. 22, while some little finishes might be needed during the first few weeks of the school year. I think that was a game changer for her career and it was such a fun moment to coach.” Fluegge was in contact with Carthage College and suggested the coaches make a visit to Northbrook during Carsello’s senior year to watch her play. Carthage head women’s basketball coach Tim Bernero immediately saw Carsello’s potential due to her athleticism and height. “Coaches are always partial to taller kids at whatever level it is and you always like to see kids with height who are good athletically,” Bernero said. “We’ve had kids similar to Samm, and if we put a little time in, I think we can help her get to another level.” Fluegge, who knows the college system well from her time playing for Loyola University of Chicago, had words of warning for Carsello as she goes off to play in college. “It’s a different game once you get to the college level, so she’s going to have to keep grinding it out,” said Fluegge. “She’s going to have to keep working on her post moves, she’ll be going up against girls who are bigger, faster and stronger.” Bernero said there will be plenty of competition for minutes next year among the frontcourt and expects Carsello to be in that mix — Carthage graduated two of its four centers from its 2017-18 team this past summer. With the preseason coming up quickly, Carsello Samm Carsello will fight for minutes early on as she competes for a spot in the Carthage College women’s basketball rotation. Photo submitted has been getting prepared by helping out GBN’s summer camp and by putting in work at the gym whenever she can. Carthage finished its 2017-18 season getting second place in conference and with such stiff competition at the center position, Carsello will need to continue to improve in order to earn playing time now and in the future. “We expect her to have a good career,” Bernero said. “She looks like she wants to be a good player and you put that with a little time and effort, then I think she’ll do nothing but keep improving. Kids that are willing to work and do those things usually success comes to them so I think some will come out and compete with our girls pretty well.”

No, Michael Jordan isn’t leaving his ownership of the Charlotte Hornets to go back to the Chicago Bulls to prove who truly is the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) — there’s no debate. The high school sports season is upon us. Different Glenbrook North athletes have returned to campus to try out and get ready for the fall season as the school year begins in a week. The Spartans are putting in the work now to win conference, regional, sectional and state championships when the leaves fall to the ground and we return to that dreaded time of year we call winter. I hope you all have enjoyed catching up with what Spartan alumni are doing in college and reading about what’s next for the just graduated seniors, but it’s time for game action and for a new school year to begin. I’m ready. Now, I’m excited for the new school year because of all the new stories that we at The Tower will get to tell all our readers this fall. Think about it: All the stories of Spartans that haven’t been told, the games not played and stressed about, the joy and heartbreak that will take this year. There are so many events that will happen this school year and fall, it’s hard to play the waiting game. While the Spartans get ready to embark on their journey, we at The Tower can’t wait to follow along and provide Northbrook readers the most up-todate information when it comes to GBN sports, like we do with all things Northbrook. The Tower is excited to provide its readers with up-to-theminute information when it comes to its sports.
