A few items of note as summer winds down
Cody Mroczka
cody@tinleyjunction.com
I
asked Frank Leahy, one
of the sibling artists
featured on last week’s
life and arts cover, about the
difference living in upstate
New York compared to his
sister Barbara in Tinley Park.
“They call this a village,”
he said before letting out a
laugh.
His point being that with
an estimated population of
close to 58,000 and with
as much infrastructure and
amenities as Tinley Park, it
can feel like more of a medium-sized
city than what’s
typically thought of as a
suburb. It feels like this to
me too sometimes. Though I
grew up in Chicago and prior
to moving home in January, I
lived in three municipalities
with populations of 3,300,
2,800, and 1,300. With so
many different governing
boards to cover, so many
wonderful community accomplishments
to highlight,
and the occasional breaking
news story thrown in, not to
mention only so many pages
in a newspaper, some things
understandably get lost in the
shuffle. So, here’s an effort
to catch up and get ahead on
some notable items:
VVAC seeks October artists
A call for artists was
issued for the specific,
potentially spooky art of
Bachelors Grove Cemetery
in Bremen Township. Tinley
Park-Park District’s Vogt
Visual Art Centers is looking
for art of all mediums for its
October gallery. Local artists
have plenty of time to catch
the Sept. 25-28 drop-off
dates when participants can
submit up to three pieces per
person. Any questions? Give
gallery director Julie Dekker
a call at (708) 309-4371.
Full-day kindergarten begins
at D146
A reminder that things
will be a little different
when Community Consolidated
School District 146
kicks off its new school year
on Aug. 23. That’s when the
Tinley Park-based district
plans to begin welcoming
more students to its campuses
with the implementation
of a full-day kindergarten
program, a product of a lot
of hard work and careful
planning pulled off by
dedicated teachers, staff,
administration and the board
of education. More information
Thank you, Jon
The 22nd Century Media
newsroom said goodbye
to Junction/Prairie editorial
intern Jonathan Barlas,
who finished up his summer
internship in mid-August.
Jon made most of his
presence felt in the sports
section, where his feature
stories earned several of our
back covers throughout the
last couple of months. His
contributions to the news
section were mostly behindthe-scenes,
but greatly
appreciated. Jon is studying
journalism at Illinois State
University, where he is also
the sports editor of the student
newspaper, and we wish
him the best of luck.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Lincoln-Way Swim
Association to hold tryouts
Whether it is freestyle,
breaststroke, backstroke or
butterfly, the Gators swim
club does it all.
With more than a dozen
people on the coaching staff,
they are able coach children
from the age of 5 through
high school. Many of their
swimmers go on to swim for
their respective school swim
teams during the high school
season and continue with the
Gators in the off-season.
Under direction from the
board, head coach Ryan
Counihan takes the reins in
the pool, while administrative
coach Mark Hoffer covers
much of the “dry” workings
of the team.
No matter the age, Counihan
said the team’s goals are
not all about trophies and
titles — although they have
quite a few of those in the
trophy case — but also helping
each swimmer meet his
or her own goals.
“We try to work with our
fastest kids to make sure that
they are getting to that national
level, and we’re working
on the kids that want to
get there, and we’re working
on the kids who just want to
be here to make friends and
have fun,” Counihan said.
Tryouts for the upcoming
winter season are to be
held on Aug. 20, and Aug.
21, at the Lincoln-Way Central
Aquatic Center, 1801 E.
Lincoln Highway in New
Lenox. Children 8 years old
and younger are scheduled
for tryouts at 6 p.m., while
children ages 9 and older are
to try out at 7 p.m.
