New travel column to focus on local getaways
Community tips,
favorite spots and
more sought

In the near future, 22nd
Century Media — publisher
of The Tinley Junction —
is set to launch a monthly
travel column, keeping the
local spirit of its newspapers
in mind with a focus on day
trips, weekend getaways and
more for residents of the
southwest suburbs.
And that is not the only
thing we’re doing to keep
a local focus in our latest
regular feature, even
as it branches out just a bit
from our usual hyperlocal
fare. While the core of each
month’s column is to focus
on a particular destination
from a personal perspective,
as well as additional tips and
recommendations, we want
you involved, too.
Each month, we hope to
feature a blurb from a local
resident, so we can share
your expert travel tips, favorite
get(-not-so-far-)aways
and personal anecdotes.
Space is limited, so please
keep it short (100 words, at
most), but we want to hear
about your favorite day-trip
spots, your most luxurious
weekend hideaways, how
you (legally and ethically)
travel on the cheap, what fun
things you do when you get
there and where we might
find off-the-beaten-path culinary
gems.
We want the things you’re
not going to find easily
through a Google search but
the type of knowledge that
comes only from repeat visits.
We’re looking for personality
and character, both
in the locations and from our
readers.
You can submit blurbs
starting now to bill@opprairie.com,
and we will pick
out a favorite each month
to accompany the column
(credited, of course, to the
resident who submitted it,
so please make sure to share
with us your name and town
of residence).
The column is being
launched with the idea that
while most of us love to live
and work here in the southwest
suburbs — and (as
our coverage shows) there
is plenty to do around our
towns — everyone needs to
a change of scenery now and
again. And it doesn’t always
require beaucoup bucks or
a passport for international
travel to find some fun.
There are plenty of wonderful
destinations within a
day’s drive, and we plan to
share some of our favorites.
We also intend it to be a
column for all seasons (yes,
we realize we’re launching
this in late-August). We
want to show you where we
go when the midday sun is
doing its best to keep us indoors,
when the ground is
covered in 2 feet of snow
and everything in between.
We hope you enjoy the journey
with us.
