Ronin Gilbert is a threesport
athlete (football, wrestling
and track) heading
into his senior year at Tinley
Park High School. He will
be one of the few Titans to
play on offense and defense
this season. His father,
Joey Gilbert, is an assistant
football coach at TPHS and
was a legendary wrestler
(161-1 record, four IHSA
state titles) at Andrew.
Do you and your dad
trash talk about Andrew
and Tinley Park?
We don’t trash talk. He’s a
Tinley guy now. He coaches
football and wrestling, so
he’s all about Tinley Park.
What do you like better,
offense or defense?
I like offense a little bit
better. That’s what I want
to do my whole life - running
the ball. But I’ve been
enjoying myself on defense,
too.
If you could line up
against any football
player, who would you
like to test yourself
against?
On defense as a safety,
I would like to face Tom
Brady just to see how I
would do playing against
one of the best ever. As a
running back, I would like
to go up against a Ray Lewis
type of player.
What is your proudest
moment in athletics?
When I got moved up to
varsity football my sophomore
year. And I scored my
first touchdown on varsity
[against Hillcrest] - that was
pretty cool.
Do you have any
embarrassing moments
in athletics?
Probably dropping a lot of
punts last year. I’m not very
good at it for some reason.
They still had me out there.
I don’t know why.
Are they going to let
you do that this year?
I hope not. We’ll see.

Are there any TV shows
you can binge watch
over and over and not
get sick of them.
Probably “The Office” or
“Friday Night Lights.” I like
the comedy in “The Office.”
It’s a funny show. I like the
football aspect of “Friday
Night Lights.”
Are there any movies
you could watch over
and over?
Actually, the “Friday
Nights Lights” movie.
If they made a movie
about you, who should
play you?
Probably someone good
looking and funny.
What would the title of
the movie be?
“The Athlete.”
