Ryde Public School celebrates its 150th birthday 

today with an Open Day and Art Show from 1pm in 

the school and grounds. 

Assembly will be in the Quadrangle at 1pm with tour 

of the school classrooms to follow and viewing the archives 

in the Library with refreshments available outside 

the Library. 

The Art Show opens at 2.30pm with a P & C barbecue 

near the main hall followed by musical items by 

students at 3.30pm. A feature will be the ringing of the 

old school bell by the youngest current student and the 

oldest former student present.

Edward was born in 

Leni on the Island of Salina 

off the northern coast of 

Sicily in 1916 and came to 

Australia in 1950 where he 

met his future wife Stella 

Speziale. 

Their first daughter Stella 

was born in 1951 and 

second daughter Lorraine 

June in 1952. 

Edward and Stella ran 

a mixed fruit business in 

Surry Hills for 15 years 

before moving to Eastwood 

in 1968 where Edward 

was appointed caretaker 

of Eastwood Public 

School.

happening now? 

Dear Sir, 

I refer to the Editor’s 

comment under a contribution 

by Bob Selinger 

where he accuses him 

of being a “misguided 

teacher” that is “brain 

washing our school children” 

on the effects of climate 

change. 

This was on top of his 

mocking comment of my 

letter from the previous 

week regarding the same 

issue. 

This sort of childish response 

is what I’ve come 

to expect from John Booth 

and once again he fails 

to support his derogatory 

comments with any form of 

argument whatsoever. 

I would challenge Mr 

Booth to provide links to 

any peer reviewed material 

by credible scientists in this 

field and published in the 

last five years. 

Where is the information 

that would substantiate his 

claim that all this talk about 

climate change and man’s 

contribution to the rapid increase 

in global warming, is 

in fact, all nonsense. 

Why is it that governments 

across the world are making 

significant legislative 

moves in light of the clear 

and irrefutable evidence 

that has been provided by 

almost every single credible 

climate scientist. 

Why have we experienced 

ten of the hottest years on 

record in the last two decades 

and the four hottest 

ever were the past four 

years. This is no longer theory 

this is fact. It is actually 

happening now. 

We all await your argued 

response.

of unit city in Gladesville 

in recent months, clearly 

suggests that our Local 

Member Mr Anthony 

Roberts (State Minister 

for Planning) is no longer 

accepting any consideration 

from his electorate. 

The much published and 

discussed proposed development 

of a massive unit/ 

retail block at the corner 

Letters to the Editor 

of Victoria and Tennyson 

Roads now stands as the 

ultimate test of Mr Roberts’ 

authority and political commonsense. 

Representing many Tennyson 

Road/Point residences, 

I request and urge 

Mr Roberts most strongly to 

completely deny this “battery

How much more of this 

development nonsense 

must we endure? 

Judgement day for 

Gladesville’s future liveability 

is at hand, and at the 

cross roads as a peaceful 

and beautiful suburb. 

However, judgement day 

is also at the cross roads 

for Mr Roberts as our Local 

Member with the State 

Election next March. 

Should this project ever 

receive the green light a 

swift and decisive termination 

of Mr Roberts representation 

will be our only 

choice.

No privatisation 

of cemeteries

Thank you Minister for 

Lands Paul Toole for ruling 

out privatisation of 

Sydney’s cemeteries. 

We have avoided another 

catastrophic situation just 

like the Sydney Airports. 

Price gouging for parking 

would be very high in an 

attempt to meet revenue 

targets. 

Imagine being asked for 

an entry fee when you want 

to lay a wreath at a loved 

one’s grave site only to 

find out later that they also 

needed money for its clearance.

On a recent, rare visit 

to Eastwood I was dismayed 

to find two Chinese 

restaurants without 

a word of English 

on their shopfront.

Dear Sir, 

I had the pleasure of representing Ryde at Hunters 

Hill’s Independence Day celebrations recently. 

What an amazing victory! 

On behalf of Ryde residents I’d like to thank Hunters 

Hill for the significant role they played in saving Ryde 

from the Liberal Government’s disastrous Council 

amalgamations policy. 

I’d also like to acknowledge the role The Weekly 

Times played in preventing Hunters Hill, Ryde and 

Lane Cove being forcibly merged. 

The key message from last week’s celebration was 

that we must remain vigilant. 

This Government has a track record of steam rolling 

local communities. 

Recent evidence of this is the threat made on the 

public record by the Planning Minister, and Member 

for Lane Cove, The Hon. Anthony Roberts MP. 

He stated that if it were up to him that he would put 

an Administrator into Ryde. 

The Liberal Government failed to merge Ryde, and 

now one of the Government’s most senior Ministers 

has threatened to sack the elected Council to impose 

their draconian planning policies upon our City. 

For the record, I will not be capitulating to the Government’s 

threats. I will always put Ryde first.

developments 

Dear Sir, 

I write in response to 

the letter of Laura Pinzone, 

of West Ryde, in 

last week’s edition of the 

Weekly Times. 

I am compelled to write as 

Ms Pinzone is either unaware 

of the true facts or is 

being deliberately misrepresentative. 

She talks about various 

developments in Ryde: Fact 

– the Talavera development 

is not approved. 

In fact, any residential development 

on this site was 

enabled by Mr Dominello 

and the State Liberal Government 

when they rezoned 

the land from commercial to 

allow for residential development. 

Fact – The Ivanhoe Estate 

development has broken up 

and dispersed a cohesive 

community and intensifies 

development on the site 

from 279 dwellings to over 

3000. Again, promoted and 

enabled by the State Liberal 

Government. 

Fact – Council was already 

undertaking a review 

of its LEP, before the 

feigned intervention of 

Planning Minister Anthony 

Roberts. 

The LEP review was in 

response to the State Government 

setting a 7600 

dwelling, 5 year housing 

target on the City of Ryde. 

Hunters Hill has a housing 

target of 300 for the same 

period. 

I could go on, but you get 

the drift. The next time Ms. 

Pinzone wants to spruik the 

State Liberal Government’s 

lines regarding development 

in Ryde, she should 

check her facts first.

50 years community service 

The Hunters Hill 

Trust is celebrating 50 

years of service to the 

community and its remit 

in promoting and 

protecting heritage in 

the Hunters Hill local 

government area. 

This role remains as 

relevant and vital today 

as it did back in 1968 

when the Trust was 

formed in response to 

development threats to 

our local heritage, its 

integrity and character. 

Two years before 

Kelly’s Bush became 

the site of the world’s 

first green bans, the 

Trust took up the battle 

to resist the push for 

re-zoning for medium 

density, the demolition 

of historic buildings 

and replacement with 

blocks of flats. 

We have continued 

to work alongside others 

to help preserve our 

built environment from 

over development as 

well as to protect public 

lands around Sydney 

Harbour, including 

Kelly’s Bush, the Sydney 

Harbour Defence 

Lands, Boronia Park 

and Riverglade reserve.

In recognition of this 

50th anniversary The 

Trust is updating its key 

publication, the ‘Heritage 

of Hunters Hill, 2002’ (the 

Green Book), and making 

it available in a searchable 

form on The Trust’s website. 

The Green Book has 

helped to protect many 

houses that faced unsympathetic 

development 

over the years. 

The Trust will take the 

opportunity to ensure 

that any valuable heritage 

buildings that were 

missed last time are included. 

In addition to the 270 

houses already listed the 

Trust will be including 

buildings constructed up 

to the late 1920s. 

The layout will change 

as the houses will now 

be listed in alphabetical 

street order instead of the 

local area groupings. 

We are looking to use 

the original Douglass 

Baglin photos and have 

access to higher quality 

visuals. 

If you wish to provide 

either an updated photo 

or history of your home

The Romantics return to Hunters Hill 

Ramon Ward-Thompson will be one of five outstanding local artists whose works will be on sale at the Hunters Hill 

Romantics Exhibition at the Hunters Hill Town Hall from Friday, September 7 until September 9 

Ward-Thompson’s works feature scenes from Paris, included above, London and Australia and he is described by 

exhibition coordinator Adrian Black as “a true romantic impressionistic painter” who captures the beauty of his subjects 

with a deliberately limited palette. 

“As a Sydney-sider he loves the beauty of the Harbour and can often be found on the foreshore. He often travels to 

Europe to be inspired by the people, its atmosphere and the architecture. He is inspired by the season.” 

The artist told The Weekly Times he strives to capture the romantic mood of his subjects in changing seasons, 

whether it be the Sydney sunshine, misty mornings in London or Paris in the rain. 

Sales of paintings will benefit the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, whose never ending search for a cure for cancer and support 

for patients is outstanding - we gladly support this charitable organisation. Gail, wife of the late Chris O’Brien and 

resident of Hunters Hill forges ahead, together with the Lifehouse team with this important task. 

The exhibition opens on Friday, September 7 from 5pm and continues on Saturday from 10am until 5pm and concludes

spokesperson Phil Jenkyn OAM had 

sought a court decision to force the government 

to release the documents and Mr Jenkyn 

said political pressure will continue. 

“Something in that report is so secret and 

embarrassing, the State Government just 

wants to hide its head in the sand,” Mr Jenkyn 

said. 

“It is extraordinary that a document that is 

referenced as support for the amalgamation 

proposals is not available for the community 

to review. 

“All major political parties except the Liberal 

Party want these documents released now.” 

The argument in favour of the KPMG documents 

release is that they were paid for by 

the taxpayer although the government argues 

that they are confidential reports for the 

cabinet only. 

“This makes it really hard for the public to 

find out what information and documentation 

it has in its records as it will have already 

stamped everything that might cause it grief

forced merger papers

DESPITE a defeat in court last week, local communities will continue to 

pressure the Berejiklian Government to release secret cabinet documents 

used to claim cost savings from a forced merger of councils.

deceptive, arrogant and incompetent government 

that fails to listen to communities

“Clearly such a government does not deserve 

to govern.” 

Court of Appeal judge Justice Basten commented 

on the documents in his verdict in 

the Ku-ring-gai case on a forced amalgamation. 

“It would be incoherent for the Minister to 

assert that any material presented to Cabinet 

to support an amalgamation of local government 

areas should not be disclosed,” Justice 

Basten said. 

“Particularly where the proposal expressly 

relied on financial information which was derived 

from an external report submitted to 

Cabinet.” 

‘This Government will be forever condemned as 

dishonest, deceptive, arrogant and incompetent 

overnment that fails to listen to communities and will 

ever learn’ 

Sales benefitted two charities 

A record crowd attended last weekend’s Hunters Hill 18th Biennial 

Quilt Show at the Hunters Hill Town Hall. 

Hundreds of local and interstate quilt lovers purchased dozens of quilts with the 

proceeds of the show going to support the Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Women’s 

Shelter and the Days For Girls organisation, which provides advocacy and health 

education for girls. 

Sixty one quilt makers exhibited their works this year and the high quality of 

these works reflected the influence of modern, traditional and folk art. 

Quilt makers attributed the record number of local visitors to promotion in 

The Weekly Times and said this year’s show set a standard that will be hard to 

surpass. 

Alleged serial sex offender behind 

bars after cold case breakthrough 

A man who allegedly raped and sexually assaulted women and 

girls in Sydney’s north west over nearly 30 years is behind bars 

after being refused bail in a Sydney court. 

DNA evidence has said the 12 victims had 

helped police crack all been contacted immediately

20 rapes and a dozen 

women, between 1989 

and 2007 in the Macquarie 

Park, Epping, Cheltenham, 

Beecroft and 

Hornsby areas. Victims 

were aged between 14 

and 40.

“an extensive analysis 

of all the evidence we 

had at the time, by the 

victims”. 

“We’ve had analysts 

scour over this … it’s like 

a jigsaw puzzle without 

knowing what the end 

picture looked like,” he 

said. 

Richardson is facing 

20 charges including 

multiple counts of aggravated 

sexual assault 

inflicting actual bodily 

harm, stalking and intimidation, 

and acts of 

indecency with a person 

under 16 around Ryde 

and Hornsby. 

In Burwood Local 

Court on Friday, his lawyer 

made no application 

for bail which was 

formally refused and 

Richardson did not enter 

a plea for any of the 

charges. 

He will appear before 

the same court via video 

link on August 20.

V-P Sunday at Epping 

Epping RSL Sub-Branch vice president Captain Brian 

Swan AM stood in for guest speaker Brig Dr David Leece 

who was ill on Sunday at the Epping Victory in the Pacific 

73rd annual commemoration service in the Ballroom at the 

Epping Club. 

Brian read Dr Leece’s address which said that VP Day is also referred to 

as VJ Day or Victory over Japan Day “which for Australians after nearly 

three years of total warfare in the Pacific meant that the Second World 

War was finally over”. 

Epping will also host a service today Wednesday August 15 which is the 

actual VP Day at he Boronia Park Cenotaph at 10.45am. 

322 Squadron Australian Airforce Cadets were well represented on 

Sunday led by Squadron Leader Merridy Thompson and provided the 

catafalque party. 

Epping Sub-Branch president John Curdie OAM welcomed all, officiating 

minister was Rev John Candy, Master of Ceremonies John Prestidge, 

scripture reading by Epping Scout Isabella Denniss and prayer for 

Australia by Robin Cummins.

Aortic Dissection Awareness 

– A Poignant Tale

Barry Willis was a 66-year-old industrial chemist, ready 

to enjoy his retirement years with his wife, Penny, their 

three adult children and two grandsons. But life dealt a 

wicked blow; his family and friends are left to mourn his 

loss. 

Today, Penny, a dear colleague of mine, is on a quest to 

create awareness, to ensure that others will not suffer the 

same fate. Here is an extract of Barry’s story, in his own 

words. 

“Last year (2015), I suffered an aortic dissection and my 

life hung in the balance for more than three days, although 

my family and I were completely unaware of this at the 

time. 

I was using the computer when I suddenly felt dizzy and 

experienced severe, sharp pain in the chest. I lay down and 

after a few minutes of the pain persisting, my wife, Penny, 

rang an ambulance, which took me to Concord Repatriation 

General Hospital (CRGH). I was initially treated for 

a heart attack by the ambulance paramedics and doctors in 

the Emergency Department. 

During my admission, the migrating pain persisted, with 

limited relief from morphine. Following a number of tests, 

including ECG, a chest x-ray and blood tests, I was advised 

by a doctor early the next morning that I had not suffered 

a heart attack, but that they were unsure of the cause of the 

ongoing pain. The doctors advised that I would be sent for 

a CT scan later that day, but this did not happen. The CT 

scan was cancelled for no apparent reason. 

It took three days and a second doctor, two CT scans, 

to finally diagnose that I was suffering from aortic dissection 

and rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) for 

emergency surgery. 

It was a long and difficult surgery – a ‘touch and go’, in 

the surgeon’s words. I was put in an induced coma for two 

days, and for the rest of my life, I will be taking medication 

and undergoing regular scans to monitor my aorta which 

continues to dilate. 

An aortic dissection occurs when the inner layer of the 

aorta tears, resulting in a second channel of blood flow. 

In addition to making the aorta very prone to rupture, the 

dissection flap can block blood supply to any of the vital 

organs fed from the aorta, such as the brain, heart, kidneys 

and intestines. 

According to scientific literature, about 20%-30% of sufferers 

die before reaching hospital; given my delayed diagnosis, 

I am a statistical anomaly. 

When people present, as I did, with a suspected heart attack 

which is subsequently ruled out, an aortic dissection 

should be ruled out as a matter of urgency, as any delay 

in diagnosis decreases the likelihood of survival. The only 

definitive way to diagnose an aortic dissection is with a 

CT scan, MRI or transesophageal echocardiography. Chest 

X-rays are not sufficiently sensitive to definitively exclude 

the presence of a dissection in approximately 40% of cases. 

I have decided to tell my story in the hope that others will 

avoid the potentially fatal delay in diagnosis that I experienced. 

” 

Barry is now gone, having not survived further major 

aortic surgery, in August 2017. He is much loved and 

missed by all, but his written words and memory will live 

on...

of solar hot water, heat pump water heaters 

and solar photo-voltaic systems. 

A staff report - requested 

by Clr Dr 

Peter Kim at the last 

council meeting - will 

consider current and 

emerging technologies 

in the renewable 

energy sector and 

whether they can lead 

to electricity costs 

savings. 

It will also detail the 

value of preparing an 

online package of information 

and education 

material aimed at 

assisting residents in 

selecting suitable solar 

power systems. 

The report will be 

provided to the Renewable 

Energy Advisory 

Committee in December 

prior to being 

submitted to Council. 

It follows a motion 

put by Clr Dr Peter Kim 

and seconded by Deputy 

Mayor Christopher 

Gordon which was 

passed unanimously. 

The motion was: 

“That a report be provided 

to the December 

2018 meeting of the 

Renewable Energy 

Advisory Committee 

for comment and 

review, prior to coming 

to Council on how 

Council is encouraging 

and can further 

encourage the uptake 

of solar hot water, heat 

pump water heaters 

and solar photo-voltaic 

systems in the local 

community. 

“That the report 

should consider current

Shock figures reveal our schools at breaking point 

Two local schools have reached full capacity and six others are being pushed to breaking point, 

according to figures released this week by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale. 

The figures obtained 

under the Freedom of 

Information Act reveal 

that Eastwood Heights 

Public School and Eastwood 

Public School have 

reached full capacity with 

North Ryde Public School,

School and Epping Boys 

High up to 94 per cent of

Cork and Fork Festival will be a classic 

Putney’s Kissing Point Park on the beautiful 

foreshore of the Parramatta River will be the 

place to be this Sunday for the Cork and Fork 

Festival. 

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale, encouraged all 

residents to get down to Kissing Point Park on Sunday. 

“The Cork and Fork Festival allows the community to 

come together at one of most picturesque spots in the 

City of Ryde to enjoy some great culinary treats and entertainment. 

“I hope to see you all there,” Clr Laxale said. 

Among the stars of this year’s event is acoustic musician 

and singer/song writer Jazzy Myers who told The 

Weekly Times she is thrilled to return to Ryde, where she 

began her career. 

“I’m very excited because I live around here and lots of 

my friends will come along to watch me,” she said. 

There promises to be something for everyone with 

quality food, world class wine and craft beer, terrific local 

entertainment and free activities for the kids available 

throughout the day. 

A highlight on the day will be a cooking demonstration 

from the My Kitchen Rules stars Josh and Nic. 

These two brothers will be showcasing their culinary 

skills with some classic Italian influence for the crowds 

to enjoy. 

A great line up of stalls and food trucks will also be present 

throughout the day selling mouth-watering gourmet 

food, internationally recognised craft beer and wine from 

some of the leading Australian vineyards. 

Pick up your $5 branded Cork and Fork wine glass from 

the ticket stalls at the event to enjoy free wine tastings or 

to purchase a glass of wine. 

Visitors will also receive a re-usable wine glass to use 

again and is dishwasher safe. 

The food that will be on offer includes Waroo lamb direct 

from the farm, freshly shucked oysters as well as delicious 

cheese from Hunter Belle Dairy. 

Renowned craft breweries Riverside Brewery, Nomad 

Brewing Company and Bilpin Cider will all be selling their 

tasty craft brews, while there will also be more than a 

dozen wineries from around NSW offering some of their 

latest vintages. 

A great line-up of local musicians will also be performing 

throughout the day to keep everyone entertained. 

Now in its second year, this year’s Cork and Fork Festival 

promises to be bigger and better with a larger event 

site to cater for the growing event. 

The festival will run between 11am to 4pm. 

All festival-goers are encouraged to use public transport 

where possible as there is only very limited parking at the 

venue. 

The City of Ryde will also have a shuttle bus operating 

every 15 minutes between Meadowbank station, Putney 

shops and Kissing Point Park. 

As single use plastic water bottles are no longer sold at 

City of Ryde events, festival-goers are reminded to bring 

their own water bottle with refills available on the day at 

Sydney Water stations located throughout the venue.

Bibi’s Favourite Photo – This is me with my

Bibi the Borzoi says goodbye 

A FAMOUS Hunters Hill Borzoi dog (pictured) 

has penned a last goodbye with the help of her 

family and friends. 

Bibi passed away a 

few weeks ago and 

shared these memories 

... 

“I was a 12 week old 

puppy when I first made 

my entrance onto the 

tree lined streets of 

Hunters Hill with long 

gangly legs, big feet, 

huge brown eyes in a 

small head with a long 

nose, soft white hair 

and a skinny strip of a 

tail. 

“I was stopped many 

times by curious residents 

who asked what 

breed of dog is that. 

“Well, I knew what I 

was .. I was a descendant 

of the long line of 

the Russian Tsars great 

aristocratic hunting 

dogs, the Borzoi ! 

“My beauty made 

me a queen and I was 

greatly admired and 

renowned throughout 

Hunters Hill.” 

Bibi went on to win 

a blue ribbon at the 

Royal Easter Show and 

was one of the stars of 

the Moocooboola Dog 

Show. 

“I was surrounded by 

dogs of every breed 

dressed in tiaras and 

clown outfits but my 

beauty needed no embellishment 

because 

I was a queen and I 

pointed my long Russian 

nose even higher in 

the air. 

“But alas, my rightful 

position on the podium 

was taken by a dog that 

did tricks, so I walked 

away with a quiet dignity 

after first relieving a 

little girl of her hot dog !” 

The beach was Bibi’s 

favourite playground. 

“It was there I and my 

brother Boris could run 

free. 

“With silken hair 

catching in the sun and 

with our ears pinned 

back we flew over the 

sand, leaping dunes 

and waves in a display 

of mighty power and 

strength.” 

Time passes quickly in 

the short life span of a 

beautiful animal. 

“I was soon an old girl, 

especially for my breed 

and my beautiful legs 

have failed me cruelly 

and my life is reduced 

to memories and the 

only running I do is in 

my dreams. 

“To the strains of Andrea 

Bocelli, with my 

mummy and daddy cradling 

me in their arms, 

we meet each other’s 

gaze and written in our 

eyes is the mutual gratitude 

for a life well lived, 

for the joy and happiness 

we brought each 

other and the love we 

shared. 

“I close my soft brown 

eyes .. it is time to say 

goodbye.”

Chinese Style, presented 

with a lotus flower carved 

from an onion. 

The fried ice-cream took 

two days to make and 

would have brought back 

childhood memories for 

many of the guests. 

It was an occasion designed 

to blow your mind 

with the celebrations 

topped off with a surprise 

traditional Lion Dance. 

The lion is a symbol of 

power, wisdom, and good 

fortune, chases away evil 

spirits and brings happiness, 

longevity and good 

luck. 

And many guests who 

were sceptical, Dragon on 

the Green had something 

special to offer, departed 

with plans for a return 

visit.

Riverside Girls High School will introduce a seven day free challenge 

which allows students and staff to take a step back and look 

at our media usage. 

Cara Murray and Portia Amy-Wilson from Riverside Girls High spoke with The 

Weekly Times about the week long charitable fundraising intitiative. 

“As we know social media and technology is taking over our lives,” they said. 

“The seven day free challenge is a week challenging ourselves to cut back on 

social media use and reconnect with the people around you. 

“Once you enter, you can choose a charity of your choice to fundraise for. 

“To raise money you can get people to sponsor you for the challenge, for example, 

a sponsor might give you $1 for every hour you spend social media and 

technology free. 

“Just by entering the challenge you will be put in the running to win a prize. 

“However, there will also be prizes to be won for the people who raise the most 

money. 

“Some of the prizes include; beautician vouchers, hairdresser vouchers, book 

vouchers, yoga vouchers and so much more.” 

Cara and Portia stressed that students and staff do not need to live like hermits 

for a week. 

“This doesn’t mean completely blocking out social media, like instagram and 

snapchat, but just trying to allow yourself to focus on things that aren’t online 

and to look up from the screen,” they said. 

“You set the rules for this challenge, so whether you think cutting out 15 minutes 

a day or a whole seven days will make you take a look at your social media 

usage is up to you. 

“We encourage you all to give the seven day free challenge a go. 

“Try to step out of your comfort zone and see life outside the screen.”

1. Get a better structure 

- Too many Australians 

don’t use the banks 

products properly, so refinancing 

is an opportunity 

to press the reset button. 

Some of the things 

you’re able to do are: 

Split loans, particularly if 

a portion is tax deductible; 

fix a portion to provide 

certainty and keep 

a variable split, against 

which there can be one 

or two offsets - to ensure 

your pay immediately 

saves you interest; linking 

a credit card to use 

the bank’s money for up 

to 55-days interest-free; 

and eliminate the hassle 

of manually paying your 

credit card bill and - if 

there’s always funds in 

your offset - never having 

to pay a cent of interest 

on your credit card. 

2. Debt consolidation - 

You can clear small debts 

and wrap them into a single 

structure and even 

use your home loan to 

pay off your car loan.

How local mums are changing the way we see cricket 

Senior cricketers said it was madness to expect toddlers to start playing 

the game from the age of five but a group of local mums backed by a 

cricket mad Ryde councillor have proved the sceptics wrong.

the Parramatta River at Putney 

this winter, you might well 

have discovered something 

far more accessible .. young 

people building timber sailing 

boats! 

The boat building was happening 

at Concord and Ryde 

Sailing Club. 

Part of a pilot programme 

aimed at making dinghy sailing 

accessible to more people. 

Contrary to the exclusive 

image, dinghy sailing is a low 

cost sport that is accessible 

to people of all ages and with 

only a very modest degree of 

physical fitness. 

As the father of one young 

boatbuilder put it: 

“I had no idea that sailing 

was cheaper than a season 

ticket to the football.” 

The Federal Government is 

again promoting physical activity 

and sporting participation 

as a contribution to promoting 

wellbeing and controlling the 

nation’s growing health costs. 

If the government message 

appeals to you or you just want 

to be involved in sport, dinghy 

sailing has a lot to offer, particularly 

to families. 

Adults and children of both 

genders can participate in the 

same events eliminating the logistical 

nightmares of saturday 

sport. 

Look deeper, what are the 

biggest challenges facing 

families today? High on the list 

will inevitably be getting their 

young people established in 

their careers. 

As one youngster described 

it: 

The toddlers and the mums 

have not only proved it is possible 

for locals of all ages to 

play cricket but have attracted 

crowds to grounds like 

Boronia Park which rival the 

crowds at senior games. 

They’ve even been backed 

by major sponsor Woolworths 

which has officially codified 

the new game as the Woolworths 

Junior Blasters series. 

The new series is similar to 

the 20/20 cricket series and 

while it lacks many of the 

classic skills and competitiveness 

of senior cricket, it is a 

lot of fun to watch and play. 

Local mum Kristy de Groot 

is one of the first local mums 

to take up the game. 

She was at a training session 

in Boronia Park on Friday 

where she told The Weekly 

Times you don’t have to be 

good at sport to be a good 

sport and a junior blaster. 

“We love it, it is a real family 

affair and it is so much fun 

when the little ones join in,” 

Kristy said. 

“We are so thrilled to have 

a new sport the whole family 

can play and it is not like 

soccer where mums have to 

stand on the side line shivering 

while watching their children. 

“It is also a learning experience 

as we teach the little 

ones how to catch a ball but 

what I like most is the batting, 

which is a lot of fun.”

agree that batting is the best 

part of the game and told The

” With sailing combined with 

boatbuilding a young person 

can write on their CV .. My 

sport is sailing, my hobby is 

boatbuilding and I sail the boat

“If the lad finishes his boat 

and wants an apprenticeship 

then send him to me!” 

Concord and Ryde SC is located 

at the epicentre of Sydney’s 

urban development. 

Determined to reach out to 

our local community, and with 

funding donated through The 

Australian Sports Foundation, 

CRSC approached local high 

schools. 

Young people were invited 

to complete our Learn to Sail 

programme and through the 

winter, build a Firebug.

“If you’re little and you get 

bowled out or caught out on 

the first ball, you even get a 

second chance and a prize.”

the sceptics wrong about 

mums and toddlers playing 

cricket has been one of the 

most satisfying achievements 

of his career. 

“The cricket community 

told me I was mad for encouraging 

five year olds and 

their mums to play cricket,” 

he said. 

“Well, we’ve not only 

proved them wrong we’ve 

created a new game that entire 

families come to watch 

and take part in. 

“It has exceeded our expectations, 

for sure, absolutely.” 

He said the aim is to create 

a game that brings families 

together. 

“The idea is to get families 

away from the computer 

screen and out into the great 

Aussie outdoors with children 

bonding with parents 

and with mums bonding with 

other mums,” he said. 

“It is like bringing a cricket 

bat and a ball for a hit at a 

family barbecue in a park, 

with the difference being that 

our families get involved in a 

sponsored competition that 

ensures everyone gets a go, 

regardless of their age and 

gender. 

“If it teaches youngsters 

skills that is great but it is 

mostly about getting out 

there, having fun and communicating 

with each other 

without touch pads and technology.” 

Sportsmanship also plays a 

key role. 

“We’ve got boys giving the 

girls a go and what is really 

brilliant is that you have the 

older children wanting to step 

aside and give the five year 

olds a go,” Clr Maggio said. 

The new game is also ideally 

suited to parks in densely 

populated areas because 

it doesn’t feature the competitiveness 

of the senior 

game with loud screams of 

“howzat” and balls being hit 

into backyards. 

“There are still some aspects 

of the traditional, senior 

game but we actually have 

lots of fun at training just playing 

around the cricket nets at 

Boronia Park,” he said. 

Sponsor Woolworths said it 

is excited by the enthusiasm 

of our new cricket mums. 

“The game is designed for 

parents to get involved and 

spend some quality time with 

their child,” a Woolworths 

spokesperson said. 

“Parents involvement is a 

huge determinant of participant 

enjoyment.”
