Swaffham Swimming Pool
Sport England and Breckland District Council have
told us we need up-to-date evidence to prove that the
people of Swaffham would actually use a swimming
pool, before they consider helping us to move the
project forward. There is a short survey which
everybody who has an opinion about swimming in
Swaffham needs to complete if we are to get any
closer to making the dream a reality.
To complete the survey please visit www.smartsurvey.
co.uk/sSwaffhamSwimmingPoolCIO or look out for
people with paper versions at events in Swaffham.
Many thanks.
Swaffham Christmas Lunch
I know what you’re thinking...talk of the ‘C’ word
already?! Yes, it may seem a little early but in order
to be able to put on our Christmas celebration a lot
of time needs to go into planning and co-ordination.
Every year we hope to better the last and this year is
no exception. As always we welcome anyone to come
and join us for a few hours of food and festivities on
Christmas Day in the Assembly Rooms. So, if you
or anyone you know will be alone this Christmas
and would like to come along then please contact
Iceni Partnership on 01760 722800. We would also
welcome anyone who could volunteer either on the
day or in the days leading up to Christmas to help
with tasks such as decorating and serving food. We
look forward to hearing from you!
WANTED – A COMMUNITY GOVERNOR
What are we looking for?
The Nicholas Hamond Academy Governing Body is made up of Community, Parent and Staff
Governors.
Our Governors may come to us through a variety of routes and with a range of different
backgrounds, skills and experiences, but they are all volunteers who work together for the
benefit of the academy and are the link between the academy and the community it serves.
Due to a governor retiring, we are currently looking for a new Community Governor and
would be delighted to hear from anyone who has:
• An interest in the performance of the academy
• A desire to contribute to and represent the community
• An open and enquiring mind
• The ability to look at issues objectively and to monitor and challenge
• The confidence to ask questions and join in debate.
• A willingness to listen and make informed judgements
• A Team Player
• Time to spare
We are particularly interested in someone with business experience in order to complete our
skill set.
If you match the above description, you may be the very person to become a Governor at
The Nicholas Hamond Academy and be part of our journey the ‘Be the Best that we can be’
What can we offer?
• A chance to develop skills in strategic management
• The opportunity to work with our team of governors and staff in meetings and Link
Visits to monitor progress
• A sense of achievement in making a difference to our School
Being a governor can be enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding.
If you are interested, please contact Jill Hambright Clerk to the Governors for an application
form, or to find out more about the role and the appointment process. Email:
RAF Coningsby Summer Camp 2018
On 14th July 2018 we travelled to RAF Coningsby in
Lincolnshire for Summer Camp, it only took around
an hour and a half to get there so the drive wasn’t too
bad. When we arrived, we put our luggage in our tents
and were given a briefing from the guards about safety
whilst we were on base. Afterwards we were sorted into
flights which were Spitfire and Hurricane. We then played
softball for an hour before we walked from the tent area
to the fire section where we were given a swift brief and
then practised running with hoses and rolling them back
up. The slowest team had to run through a “shower” and
got soaked. We then played tug of war and everybody got
soaked! We had free time for the rest of the night. We
had a 6am start the next day and did some leadership and
first aid exercises to help improve our skills in both areas.
During leadership the non-NCOs were told to take control
to improve their confidence. After lunch we travelled to
Newark Air Museum to look around the new and old
aircraft including a Vulcan.
On the second day we had an ACLO meeting telling us what
was on base and the history of the aircraft and squadrons
there. We then had our camp photo taken in front of 29
Squadron. After lunch we watched 11 Typhoons take off,
which was cool. Next day we went to see 29 Squadron and
got to look around a Typhoon, had a picture taken in front
of a Spitfire and then saw a Dakota take off. In the evening
we watched Solo, a Star Wars story.
The following day we used high ropes and STEM. The high
ropes were a good way to build trust between the cadets
in each flight. The STEM was very educational, but fun. We
got to build our own gliders and fly them. In the evening
we had a PTI make us do the tests used to join the RAF.
On the fifth day we went to a water sports place on a
lake and did an obstacle course. It was really exhilarating
and we all had a good time. After that we visited RAF
Scampton and went on a tour around the heritage centre.
At the end we had fish and chips and then had the Paper
Plate Awards.
On the last day we had a Drill Competition, which
Hurricane Flight won. Afterwards we went to the Battle of
Britain Memorial Flight and looked around the old aircraft.
Finally, we had the camp awards and the leftover Paper
Plate Awards before cleaning our tents and packing to
leave. RAF Coningsby camp was great.
The Churches of Beachamwell
Beachamwell Local History Group is celebrating this
wealth of historic and religious buildings with a range
of exhibitions and events on Sunday 23rd September
from 11am to 4pm. In St Mary’s Church there will
be displays and exhibits featuring the history and
architecture of the various churches and information
about their incumbents. Some of the parishioners
who worshipped here through the centuries who
are remembered in memorials and gravestones,
will be included together with information from the
registers of Births, Marriages & Deaths. A timeline
will show the significant dates stretching back to the
Domesday Book. The day will provide a chance to
visit St Botolph’s Church at Shingham – normally not
open to the public - and experience the charm of its
simple interior with 15th century benches and the
17th century Jacobean pulpit. There will be a guided
walk along local footpaths from Beachamwell to St
Botolph’s. In Beachamwell Village Hall’s art exhibition
we will be featuring the Beachamwell churches in
painting, drawings and photographs. The hall is also
the venue for light refreshments. The Beachamwell
creative writing group has already produced a booklet
of poetry inspired by the churches, this will be on
sale. Entry to all events is free. More information
on the Beachamwell Local History Group website at
Swaffham Infant School
Fun In The Sun – Summer Fete
Yes we had plenty of fun and rather too much sun
on a sweltering Saturday. Children still had plenty of
energy with so much to hold their attention.
Driving a tractor, holding birds of prey, looking in
a large modern tractor, or maybe eating from the
wonderful BBQ, followed by Mr Whippy Nicks ice
cream, looking around the stalls, activity on the
inflatable assault course, trying archery, playing
games, having hair braided, glitter tattoos, or face
painted were among the attractions. Freya and Olivia,
below, enjoyed the petting pony.
Then the wonderful Pot of Gold Shanty Crew
entertained us. Green Man Woodlands carved an
owl with an electric saw and there were displays of
gymnastics, Taekwondo, and Infant Dance Club. We
even had a visit from a Minion and a Furry Frog!
We are so grateful to our sponsors Hamlyn Financial
Services and Saxon Agriculture, to everyone who
helped, to compère Eddie Gee, and all who attended.
The money raised helps the school in so many ways,
thank you. Our main fundraising for next term is for
our Forest School which is expanding so every class
will have time there. Some equipment we need
doesn’t have to be brand new and you may have
some spare not being used (as long as not rusty) ie
carpentry tools and outside tools such as secateurs,
lopers, wheelbarrow, mallet, watering can, Jerry can,
tool box, nature books, wicker baskets, enamel mugs,
binoculars, paint brushes, rope and waterproof
suits. We will need a regular supply of wood, for fire,
and for carpentry work too. Please take to the school
when open or email suechittock@btinternet.com
who can collect from you.
Tombola, the Bottle Tombola, the jewellery stall, or
the cakes stall, to name just a few. A little nearer the
time more information will be given. Thank you in
anticipation.
Churches Together
The life of our church is very much interwoven with
the life of the town and of particular families. It has
been good to see different branches of Swaffham
families celebrating christenings and marriages this
summer, and a privilege also to realise that some of
those for whom I have taken funerals belonged to
these families, and are much loved and remembered
as a new generation is born and named after them.
To the left of the altar is the tomb of John Botright who
was my predecessor from 1435-1474. Although the
spelling may vary, because English spelling was far from
standardised in those days, there are descendants of
his in this country and in America, and I was privileged
to lay the ashes of Rodney Boatright, one of his
American descendants, to rest in the churchyard a few
months ago. It seemed extraordinary to have such a
close connection with someone who had such an
impact on the church and town. Revd John Botright
had the daunting task of coping with a church building
which had collapsed, and was a major force behind the
rebuilding. Inheriting old buildings is both a joy and a
huge responsibility and so the current parochial church
council and congregation greatly value the support of
our wider community and the many visitors who come
from across the country and the world to visit the
‘new’ church built in John Botright’s time.
We’ve just had a wonderful flower festival, and are
now turning our attention towards Harvest Festival
(7th October), All Saints/All Souls (4th November)
and then a number of services and events around
Remembrance and marking the centenary of the end
of the First World War, with both town and church
taking part. As we contemplate the cost of the church’s
day-to-day running, we are also holding a special Gift
Day for those who wish to contribute to its ongoing
life and witness of the church in Swaffham: this will be
on Saturday 28th September, with envelopes available
in church.
With every good wish.
to meeting you at one of our talks.
September’s Artist at Gallery Iceni
Debbie Osborn - Artist and Designer
I make, exhibit and sell finished pieces of art, paper
goods and textiles and am happy to take commissions
for bespoke art and design work. I am also a mail artist
and I create and exchange mail art with other mail
artists across the world. This work can be seen on
my Mailmaker blog. I paint a lot on canvas and wood
panels, but I enjoy working with re-cycled materials.
Recently, for example, I have been painting on found
surfaces like wood or discarded material and old
frames. I also recycle past works. The more I work,
the more satisfied I am at being able to produce
something by transforming previously used items
into beautiful or interesting pieces of art.
When I work I’m aiming for a visual harmony of image,
colour, texture and shape. Sometimes searching for
the right image, shape or colour to finish a piece of
work takes time, but that process for me is relaxing.
I love that I can bring people enjoyment through my
work and maybe introduce them to something new.
I like to think that my studio is an encouraging and
exciting place to visit, where you can see me working
or view my work in the adjoining gallery. I love to get
visitors but if you are coming any distance please call
01328 856700 or 07941 784207 first.
I graduated from Birmingham Institute of Art and
Design with an MA in Fashion, Textiles and Surface
Design (2001). I previously graduated from University
College Northampton with a BA (Hons) in Fashion &
Related Textiles (1999).
I sell my work direct from my studio, my Etsy shop,
from exhibitions and Fakenham Makers Market,
of which I am the co-founder and curator, with my
husband Keith.
Merle Boddy Centre
On the hottest day imaginable we ran out of paint
for a project, so being the only one available it’s me
who goes shopping. Well me and heat are not the
best of friends, but off I go heading for Pedlar’s Gold
for the goods I need. After selecting what I needed
,which of course they always have (what a shop),
then being served with a smile and a chat from Jayne
I was then presented with money! A total of £190
had been given by the generosity of the customers
who are putting money in collection pots near the
tills and also from book sales. My thanks go to Jane
and Carol who have organised this, to all the staff at
Pedlars Gold for always making my shopping visits a
pleasure and to all the lovely people who are being
so generous with filling the pots with cash. There
aren’t many shops you go into and come out with
more cash than you went in with, what a lovely visit
to a lovely shop.
We have a garden of flowers that we don’t have to
water, but looks just fantastic. Such a lot of hard work
by our clients goes into making such a wonderful
display.
We may be a little late getting on this band wagon,
but we thought we would give this a try, so these are
our first batch of Norfolk rocks. Please look out for
them and Facebook us if you find one.
The front of the day centre has another addition.
We now have a new flower box to enhance the
entrance. This is being filled with alpines and sun
loving succulents. The sleepers were sourced from
Grademore in our local village of Necton. Look out
for our new sign coming soon.
It is with great sadness that we are saying goodbye
to Patsy. Retirement is not going to be sitting back
doing nothing as she has a granddaughter to occupy
her time! She will be missed at the day service for
her skills at reminiscence, her skills for the old songs
and for just being Patsy. For Patsy’s leaving pressie
we thought long and hard and in the picture is what
we came up with, who wouldn’t want a wizard to
stand in your garden and a rooster that will be very
quiet at dawn?! A Chinese meal was enjoyed and
a few little surprise gifts were given because this is
not only Patsy’s retirement, but also a big 0 birthday.
This message is from us all, don’t be a stranger and
we will really miss you. Health, happiness, good luck
and love from us all.
We were bowled over this afternoon when we
received a cheque from Swaffham Bowls Club for
the wonderful amount of £350. This was raised from
matches that were played for a trophy which was left
by a benefactor and what a result, Swaffham won!
Well done Swaffham and thank you you for thinking
of us.
Swaffham & District Lions
Swaffham and District Lions had
a very enjoyable day at Swaffham
Infant School’s fete. With the sun
shining the Lions Pig Race game
attracted young and old for some light hearted fun,
as the six pigs raced down the track to the finishing
line. The Lions use the game as a community support
for local fetes not as a Lions fundraiser.
Swaffham & District Lions are receiving more
requests for help as a result of funding cuts by
national and local governments. In the past 4
weeks we have had requests from Swaffham
Infant School, Home-Start, the Daisy Programme.
We have also helped the Food Bank to either help
with funding or collecting food. All requests are
considered by the Lions Welfare Team and the
recommendations are presented to the club for
approval.
Swaffham Lions held an afternoon teas and a
Boules competition in honour of Robert Pollard
and wife Trudy. Robert, a former Swaffham Lion,
made the trip over from America where he is a
member of Concord Lions in North Carolina, who
are twinned with Swaffham. The Boules event was
organise by Lions David and Bobby Elsom. Despite
the windy conditions the twenty contestants
fought some tight matches. After four rounds Pam
Tallon beat Adrian Adcock 2-1 in the final.
Swaffham Lions continue to support local village
fetes throughout the summer. Despite the rain
showers the children and adults of Narborough
had great fun cheering on their pig in the Lions
very popular pig race game, at the annual village fete.
Sporle Afternoon WI
Somehow “self catering” will never
sound quite so ordinary again. The
Landmark Trust hires out the most
amazing properties for just this purpose. The
buildings involved are so unusual and different you
could be the “landed gentry” for a few days for just
a relatively low hire cost. A very interesting and
illuminating talk.
After the customary tea and cake the WI business was
dealt with, the main thing being the Breast Cancer
Care coffee morning on the 27th July. In-spite of a
low turn out from the village we raised £322.60p for
this most worthwhile cause. The August outing to
the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is
now sold out and will be a moving experience for
those who have lost family members in the forces
and other organisations with memorials there.
The craft afternoon will be re-instigated with the
hope of completing the quilts for dementia patients.
The new Norwich Theatre programme was discussed
and the afternoon ended with a slightly unusual Pam
Ayres poem.
Sporle WI – 3rd Afternoon of the month 2pm – 4pm
– visitors welcome – September’s topic - A make
up demo.
Swaffham Evening WI
Our August meeting was a birthday
party celebrating 43 years since our
WI was founded. We enjoyed a bring
and share supper provided by our members and a
lovely cake made and decorated our catering officer,
Julia. We enjoyed a short programme of humorous
readings and sketches. A relaxed, friendly evening.
Next month our speaker will be Jenny Gibbs talking
about her life in Turkey. Visitors are always welcome.
For more information, please call our Secretary on
Swaffham 722879.
Beachamwell & District WI
After last months’s Bollywood
event, Beachamwell WI enjoyed a
quieter evening in August when we
welcomed Colin Hawgood otherwise known as Mr
“Norfolk Sharp”. He gave a most interesting talk
about his work and a demonstration of knife and
tool sharpening techniques. We learned how to
“get sharp and stay sharp”. For us, August also
brings a garden meeting with chat, tea and scones.
September is the month when the Committee
step down from their duties and the members
take over, as a thank you. Our speaker will be Sue
Pennell, who will talk about “Fungi”, illustrated by
her own photos. Previously we have all enjoyed
Sue’s talks on wild flowers and butterflies; she
is a real expert on our Breckland natural history
and her photos are exquisite. In October we will
celebrate 100 years of Votes for Women with a
special presentation written and performed by
our members.
If you like the sound of what we do at Beachamwell
Swaffham WEA
In September tutor Fiona Fitzgerald returns to
Swaffham WEA with a course looking at the history of
sculpture. Fiona says: “Our world is littered with quiet
stone and bronze inhabitants, both in public places -
buildings, parks and streets, as well as in museums.
This course will help us to understand and appreciate
them.” Introduction to Sculpture starts on Friday 21st
September at 10am
The flowering of Dutch art and culture in the 16th
and 17th centuries is the subject for the Monday
evening course. Tutor Charles Lewis will examine the
rise of the Netherlands as a political and economic
power and the consequent emergence of great Dutch
painters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt. Holland in
the Golden Age begins on Monday 17th September at
7.30pm. The venue for both courses is the Swaffham
Community Centre, Campingland, Swaffham, PE37
7RD. The fee for each seven week course is £52. You
are welcome to attend the first session as a ‘taster’ for
£7 with no obligation to continue. Fees may be waived
for those in receipt of benefits. More information is
available at www.wea.org.uk where you can also
sign up in advance to attend. However there is no
requirement to book in advance; just come along and
you will be very welcome. For further information
Growing Communities Launch
Families joined Garden Organic and Family Action
this summer to celebrate the launch of their Growing
Communities Project in Breckland and West Norfolk.
Visitors to the ESCAPE allotments at Tumbler Hill were
treated to storytelling, willow weaving and green
woodworking, along with fantastic folk music, seed
workshops and trails. A big thank you to all of the
volunteers and staff who helped out on the day, along with
the families who joined us. The event even made its way
onto the BBC’s local evening news, which the organisers
were all delighted with!
The project aims to encourage local people to grow
their own organic fruit and vegetables out in their local
communities, either at allotments, on windowsills or in
community gardens. We are looking for eager volunteers
to help spread the growing message to their friends,
families and communities, by becoming a volunteer
Master Gardener with Garden Organic.
If you would like to find out
more about the outreach
project or are interested in
becoming a volunteer, please
contact Becky on breavill@
gardenorganic.org.uk or 07454
Gardener training weekend
will be held in Thetford on Sat
29th & Sun 30th September.
Swaffham Twinning Association
On a beautiful warm summer's evening members of
the Swaffham Twinning Association were guests of
Irene and Arthur for a pizza party - great fun rolling
out the dough and putting our favourite toppings
on. Rather hot for Arthur though cooking in the
Pizza Oven!! Our next event is at Rasputins Russian
Restaurant on Friday 12th October.
Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice
In our article published in last month`s Newsletter,
we announced that we expected the profit from our
Relay Together/Summer Draw to be in the region
of £3500. However as sponsorship monies began
to come in after the event, it became obvious that
this estimate was very much on the conservative
side. At the time of writing this report (6th August),
with some monies still to come in and taking into
consideration gift aid that can be claimed, the final
figure raised will slightly exceed £7k. Thanks to all
the walkers that took part, to those who sponsored
them and to everybody else who helped make the
day the success it undoubtedly was.
Next, a date for your diaries as on Saturday 6th
October, for the fifth year running, we have organised
a Concert Of Choirs featuring Marham Military Wives
and Kings Lynn Male Voice. The event is being held at
Swaffham Assembly Rooms – 7pm for 7.30pm start.
We will be running a wine and soft drinks bar and
a raffle. Tickets are £10 each and can be obtained
from our office at 17/19 Brocks Road, Swaffham
(01760 722937) or from Ceres Bookshop, London St,
Swaffham. In previous years the concerts have sold
out and we are hoping the same thing to happen
this year. For the past few years David Gulliver has
dealt with our publicity, writing the articles for the
Swaffham Newsletter and the various magazines
produced in the villages around Swaffham. David
has now relinquished this role but will continue
to help us with street collections and ticket selling
whenever possible. Our grateful thanks to David for
all the work he has done in raising the profile of our
charity in Swaffham, the surrounding villages and
beyond. Adrian Adcock, our Fundraising Chairman
and Treasurer, will be taking over the role.
We are always looking for volunteers to join our
Fundraising Committee or indeed in other roles. If
you are interested then please ring Adrian Adcock
(01760 724304) or our Co-ordinator Wendy Martin
on our office number (01760 722937).
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
Elisabeth Frink: Humans And Other Animals
The largest presentation of work by Elisabeth Frink
since the artist’s death in 1993. 13th October 2018
– 24th February 2019.
Press View: Friday
12th October.
This autumn, the
Sainsbury Centre will
present a major new
exhibition of work by
Elisabeth Frink (1930-
1993). Elisabeth Frink:
Humans and Other
Animals, featuring
over 130 works by
the artist, will be the
largest showing of
Frink’s work in 25
years. The exhibition will provide new perspectives
and examine her radical and bohemian beginnings
in 1950s London, reappraising one of the most
important British sculptors of the twentieth century.
Frink’s work will be placed alongside that of other
modern masters, most notably Pablo Picasso,
Alberto Giacometti, Auguste Rodin, Francis Bacon,
Germaine Richier and Louise Bourgeois. In addition,
work by two exciting contemporary artists, Douglas
Gordon and Rebecca Warren, will also provide a
wider context to explore themes important to Frink.
Elisabeth Frink: Humans and Other Animals will trace
the evolution of Frink’s work over four decades,
presenting the major themes in her practice and
paying significant attention to her early work in the
context of artists such as Rodin, Giacometti and
Richier who inspired her. The relationship between
humans and animals was central for Frink and
one she returned to throughout her life. Whilst
offering exciting contemporary possibilities both
metaphorically and directly, she was conscious of the
fact that animals appear in art from the very earliest
times and that their relationship with humans and
animals is interdependent.
Elisabeth Frink: Humans and Other Animals
will feature a number of the artist’s final works,
influenced by the ancient, folkloric figure of the
Green Man. Drawing solace just before her death in
this motif’s associations with rebirth and fresh life,
this section will evidence how the natural world was
a fertile source of inspiration at the core of Frink’s
oeuvre. The exhibition has been developed in full
collaboration with the Elisabeth Frink Estate, and will
include a large number of loans from the Elisabeth
Frink Estate, Tate, The Ingram Collection, and private
lenders alongside important examples from the
Sainsbury Centre’s own Collection.
Supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, the
Geoffrey Watling Charity and the Hargreaves and
Ball Trust.

Swaffham Community Hospital LOF
After some negotiations with the Hospital Trust,
we are pleased to confirm that work started
late July with a major revamp of the gardens at
the rear of the Hospital. The old gardens were
in need of some TLC but also had become a bit
“tired”. The opportunity has arisen for us to be
more ambitious and go for a major revamp. We
wish to reflect a “Market Town” theme including
some market type stalls. We are building a new
garden gazebo with open sides with new seating
for patients and relatives to use. The garden will
include a variety of ground surfaces which enables
those with walking difficulties to relearn skills.
We aim to keep the garden overall as effective as
possible to maintain.
Once the work is complete (late Summer) we
will be holding an open day with stalls and
refreshments to welcome members of the public
as well as patients’ relatives, to see what has been
achieved. Dates will be confirmed later. I hope
at the time you will be able to come. Our funds
received a very welcome boost from the proceeds
of a sponsored walk undertaken by staff and
others from the Pedlars Gold shop in Swaffham.
Many thanks again for this support. As we do hold
raffles and events it is always helpful to receive
any unwanted items that you may like to donate.
These can either be left at Hospital Reception or
if you ring me I can collect. We were very lucky
in securing the return of the Imperial Vienna
Orchestra for the afternoon of Sunday 22nd July.
This was their third visit to Swaffham and we
had a good turnout. The title was “The Beautiful
Galatea” a concert performance and comic opera.
Delighted to say that the Orchestra are booked
to return on Saturday 13th October, 7pm for 7.30
with a traditional performance. Tickets again £12
available in September from Ceres Bookshop and
Just Hair. A further reminder our Annual Street
collection will be on Saturday 1st September.
Thanks to those helping.
As usual you can contact us Colin Houghton
Farewell to the Swaffham Hare
After spending a large part of the summer with
us, the Swaffham Hare and his cousins have all left
their spots in shop windows around town. However,
many will still be residing in Swaffham in new forever
homes after being auctioned off by CR Auctions.
Thanks to everyone who participated in making
the Swaffham Hare idea a success; the community
groups that decorated them and the shopkeepers
who displayed them, those of you who completed
the trail and of course those of you who bid on a hare
to buy. In total the auction raised £245 for charity.
We look forward to seeing what visitors we will be
welcoming next year!
Thank you from Home Start
Swaffham Community Garden
Rain at last!!
Since our first very successful start-up session for
the new Community Garden on the Campingland,
the continuous hot weather with no rain has
unfortunately halted further progress. Our thanks to
James Dean and others
for watering on a
regular basis to ensure
that at least the initial
planting prevailed.
Our thanks also to
Swaffham Rotary for
designing and offering
to finance new signage
which is planned
to be placed in the
Town Centre pointing
to the Campingland
and the new garden.
However, the climate now seems to be back to our
more usual summer holiday regime allowing the
ground to sufficiently soften allowing us to plan
the next work stages leading to continuation of the
project. September will see a variety of activities
at the site including turf lifting, creation of a Bug
Hotel, apple tree planting, plus wild flower and herb
areas. We are waiting to hear from our RHS Advisor,
who is currently on vacation, as to her availability
next month before we set a definitive time table
but are looking forward to involving volunteers of
all ages from around the town, local community
organisations including the schools and Iceni Youthie,
to help us complete the Garden. So please watch out
for further announcements on the Town Council and
Iceni websites, on our Community Garden Facebook
page and other social media for the dates and
objectives so you can join us in ensuring that we can
be proud of the garden we are creating.
Thanks from the Swaffham Town Team
Benefits for the elderly
Many older people are entitled to claim benefits –
but not everyone is aware of what their entitlements
are, and how to claim. Age UK Norfolk is working
hard to raise awareness so that those in later life,
and their carers, can claim; and helping them along
the way to make those claims.
The awareness campaign begins in January and the
charity is aiming to ensure that the people concerned:
• Will be better informed
• Know their rights
• Are claiming their entitlements
• Are fully informed about attendance allowance,
pension credit, council tax benefit etc
• Get the help and assistance they need to claim
those benefits.
Age UK Norfolk hopes to achieve this by offering:
• Benefit entitlement checks.
• Free and confidential advice about home safety,
housing, care issues etc.
• Providing this service in a place of a claimant’s
choice, either in their own homes, at Age UK
Norfolk’s premises, in a care home, or any other
venue that is deemed suitable.
To find out more about
benefit checks, call the Age
UK Norfolk advice line on
Icenima - You decide
For those of you who don’t already know, we
show a film in the Community Centre on the third
Wednesday of each month at 2pm. We try to select
a varied choice of films to cater for all tastes, but
realise we might not always get it right. Therefore,
we want to ask for your suggestions, would you like
more comedy, drama or documentaries?
You can send in suggestions to swaffhamnewsletter@
gmail.com or contact us on Facebook, just search for
‘Iceni Partnership’. We may even set up an online
poll so you can vote for your favourite from the ideas
sent in. It would be great to widen our audience, so
please get in touch.
The Rotary Club of Swaffham are nearing the launch
of their Annual Visual Arts Festival. This year we
have an exciting International Artist to commence
our celebration of the arts. Rebecca Louise Law will
open the Festival at The West Acre Theatre with a
presentation and talk about her remarkable floral
Installations using simply dried flowers and copper
wire. Remarkable because of their detail design and
sheer amount. Born and raised in Cambridge after
studying fine art at Newcastle, Rebecca worked as a
florist in London and was asked one day to produce
a floral installation at The Royal Opera House’s Floral
Hall. She promised the most extreme thing possible
by suspending flowers from ceiling to floor. In 2017
her installation “Life in Death” at Kew Gardens
installed 375,000 flowers made into 1000 garlands
each 5 metres long, which visitors could walk through.
Law has worked all over the world with some of her
installations being permanent. Shown below is the
artist at work.
The launch is at West Acre Theatre on Friday 6th
October at 7pm. Tickets are available from Ceres
Bookshop at 20, London Street, Swaffham (722504).
The Arts Festival built on the Annual Arts Exhibition
some 6 years ago with the aim of increasing and
growing the knowledge and appreciation of Arts in
the Swaffham area. The Festival also includes the
heart warming film Breathe, the story of a polio
victim, a Theatre production by fEast entitled “ Into
thin Air”, a talk by local artist Jane Hodgson and at
the end our Annual Art Exhibition at the Assembly
Rooms 26, 27 and 28 October. Last year the Festival
raised a record profit for charities so we have a big
challenge this year ahead of us!
Lioness Club - The Pride Of Swaffham.
Our new Lioness Year started at the beginning of July
with our Changeover of Presidents, when Christine
Haines handed over the chain of office to our new
President Anne Dryden, with a meal and get-together
at The Station pub which was enjoyed by all.
Our President Anne visited family in St. Lucia in July.
Whilst there she attended a meeting of the Castries
St. Lucia Lions Club. She learned of their tireless
efforts to Feed the Poor on a regular basis.
The final event of Christine’s year was our Lioness
Team entry in the Swaffham & Litcham Home
Hospice sponsored relay, where our team raised over
£200 in sponsorship. Our first fund-raising function
was an Afternoon Tea Party and flower arranging
demonstration for EACH (children’s hospice). Many
thanks to everyone who turned out to support this,
and special thanks to our flower arranger Sarah Green
of “Precious Petals”. We have raised approximately
£400 for the EACH Nook Appeal.
On 26th August we have a tombola and bric-a-brac
stall at the Swaffham Vehicle Spectacular. On 22nd
September we will be holding a Macmillan Coffee
Morning in the Assembly Rooms from 9am. Entry is
free and we look forward to your continuing support.
A Norwich and Swaffham
Day’s Bank note. Ceres
appears to be carrying a
sickle, although Ben Ripper
describes it as “extending
her fingers in a gesture of
giving”. Looks like a sickle
to me.
However, we know from the news report of the
affixing “a most elegant figure of Ceres” on the top
of the Buttercross in 1784 that she was holding
some ears of wheat in her right hand and the horn
of Plenty under her left arm.
grateful for the work done by Bernard Hunt over
the last four years in the Church Newsletter and by
volunteers who have donated items, documents
and research time. We are now going through the
town's Roll of Honour of around 400 names. One
of the problems is that they didn't always give their
true age. So far we've only had one letter from Mum
telling the authorities to send him back to England
– he's only 16. But there are probably more. If you
Rather ironic that they were taking down the Barclays
Bank sign on Norfolk Day.
It was also rather sad, because Barclays and its
predecessors have been associated with Swaffham
since 1795 when the Day family opened a bank in
the town, trading under the name of the Norwich
and Swaffham Bank. The premises were on the site
of what is now the Old School. This banking company
had many ups and downs (mainly downs) throughout
the difficult 19th century but eventually by 1883
became known as Gurney, Birkbeck, Barclay, Buxton
and Creswell, later shortened to Gurney & Co.
This, together with 19 other banks became Barclay
& Co and by 1917 were Barclays Bank. The Barclay
premises became 69 Market Place, an early Georgian
house converted to suit the business. It was
demolished in 1966 and rebuilt to blend with the
existing architecture.
This year – with the selling of Day's Field and the
redevelopment of the Old School House it would
seem that all connection with the Day family has
been severed, although there are family memorials
in the church.
Wissey U3A
At the last monthly meeting
on 2nd August, Georgie
Bell gave members a very
interesting presentation about the Merle Boddy
Centre in Swaffham. Her presentation covered
the centre’s history and detailed the running
costs of the centre and the cost for clients
visiting the centre. Alzheimer’s disease and
various types of dementia were discussed. Then,
using a wide selection of musical instruments,
members were exposed to a riot of sounds
which demonstrated some of the difficulties
clients can experience when they have problems
communicating with others. The presentation
at September’s meeting will be about the
Thursford Collection. October’s speaker will
talk about “Assassins, Traitors and Spies” and
in November Sir Henry Bedingfield will give
a presentation about Heraldry. There was no
archery at the Holme Hale playing field in August
but the event will hopefully be resumed again
in September. Sporting activities include shortmat
bowling, table tennis and croquet. Soft-ball
tennis at Swaffham’s Leisure Centre will restart
Swaffham Jazz Club
For our August session we welcomed vocalist Melody
Brooker and her Trio, together with Dave Taylor,
tenor sax. Melody is not content to sing a couple of
numbers in each half, in someone else’s band. She
prefers to choose her own line-up and sing in every
number. The rest of the line-up was Paul White,
piano, Colin Borrell, guitar, and John Trowsdale, bass.
The more observant among you will have noticed
the absence of a drummer. What difference to the
music does this make ?
I think it makes the sound more transparent, firstly
because of the absence of a constant ‘wall’ of sound
coming from the cymbals. Secondly, unlike trad jazz
or rock drummers, who mostly concentrate on laying
down a heavy off beat twice in every bar, modern
jazz drummers are busy all the time, filling the gaps
between each beat using their sticks or brushes to
make intricate rhythmic patterns.
Returning to the music. Given that there were just
over twenty numbers (a club record!) I can only pick
out some of the most memorable.
I was struck by what a great jazz number The Beatles’
“Ticket to Ride” makes. Perhaps the best moment
was Dave’s ascent into the stratosphere at the end of
“Masquerade” drawing gasps of astonishment from
the audience. I loved the way a brilliant solo from
Dave inspired equally brilliant solos from Paul and
Colin, especially in “Love For Sale”, “How High the
Moon” and “Blue Skies”. “Quiet Nights” performed
as a subtle bossa nova was delicious, and the way
in which “You’ve Changed”, starting as a soulful,
laid back number grew into a sustained climax by
the end, was masterful. The only bass solo came
in “Taking a Chance on Love”, emphasising what a
beautiful sound an acoustic string bass can make.
Melody’s voice production was superb, with
wonderfully clear diction and perfect intonation
throughout. Lastly, “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t
Got That Swing” demonstrated that you don’t need
a drummer for a really swinging number if you have
a group of talented jazz musicians.
Next up we have a change to our advertised
programme, when the Canadian duo, Roger and Kari
Hewitt, keyboard and vocals, will appear with the
Lee Vasey Jam Band. Tuesday 11 September 7.30pm
SCALGA
Greetings from the allotments.
What can I say? With temperatures shooting up to 38
deg in my garden at one point all the produce began
to shrivel in front of our eyes. No matter how many
watering cans we drenched the stuff with we could not
keep the ground hydrated enough to allow the fruit/
veg to swell properly. The carrots and onions, whilst
being very tasty, were small as was the sweetcorn and
potatoes. We salvaged what we could but the plot
has been cleared and rotovated by the end of August
normally its September. On a bright note, the apples,
peas, raspberries and blackberries have been wonderful.
What a topsy turvey weather year this has been so far.
Fact:- Great Britain is the only country that grows apples
expressly for cooking. As Charles Dudley Warner said:
“Everyone talks about the weather but nobody does
anything about it” (1829 – 1900)
The pigeon in its precarious nest raised 2 squeakers and
they have now flown away, hopefully mother will be
back next year. The old gazebo frame that is covered in a
grape vine where she hid her nest is full of small bunches
of grapes. We hope the blackbirds will leave us some.
We had some unpleasant incidents. Several sheds
were broken into and equipment was stolen, others
were simply forced open and nothing was taken. Black
currants were stolen along with other produce. Two
incidents of chicken theft also occurred. It is extremely
aggravating to think that things you have looked after or
grown throughout the year are casually stolen. Shame
on the offenders. I am sure if they had said they were
in need the plot holders would have gladly spared some
produce. On the 11th August we held our annual BBQ.
25 members attended and we were so lucky that the
day was bright and sunny. Apart from sausages and beef
burgers (courtesy of Papworths Butchers) members
brought a delicious assortment of desserts. Obviously
everything was non-fat and sugar free!! So no one felt
guilty tucking in.
The Afternoon Tea will be held on the 9th September,
3pm in the Assembly Rooms. All members welcome. The
winners of the three categories of best kept allotment
will be presented with their prizes. This is usually well
attended as members contribute a wonderful selection
of eats. What a good job keeping an allotment is healthy
and ensures good exercise!!
We still have starter plots available. These are ideal for
pensioners who just want to grow a small amount of
produce. Young families, who don’t have time to spend
on a large area, and just people who have never gardened
before. Your only commitment is monthly so should you
decide gardening is not for you then a month’s notice is
all that is needed. For further information please contact
us on the numbers below
If you are interested in taking a plot or a starter plot,
please call Graham or Jennifer Edwards on 07919
888870 or 07919 888870.
From the Mayor’s Parlour
This is my third article since taking over in
May 18. By the time you read this I will have
chaired three full council meetings. Although
meetings can be seen as boring, why don’t
you give us a try and come to see first-hand
what we get up to. There is an opportunity for you to
ask questions which if we cannot answer then, we will
always get back to you. As my diary permits I will always
try to respond to any invites to come and see you at any of
our town’s groups/clubs/ organisations etc. I think this is
important as it is good to meet “face to face”.
Sad to see Barclays now gone. Still no news about what
the building may be used for.
Congratulations to all those involved in getting our “Park
Run” established two months ago. It’s going well. Another
new initiative to encourage us to exercise!
The “Beating of the Retreat” procession and the evening
concert held in July really was a magnificent event. It
was an emotional day and it will be long remembered.
Although we cannot make a definite promise we will if
possible seek to get them to return at some point.
I hope many of you managed a day out at the Bank Holiday
when we held our second Classic Car Show and Family
Fun Day. I hope you found it interesting and enjoyable
with plenty to do. Any ideas for future events are always
welcome. Thanks to those at The Norfolk Vehicle Club
and colleagues at the Town Hall for the hard work in
organising. Nothing definite yet to report on the future of
the Green Britian Centre. However, the Council has been
talking to the “Garden Science Trust” to see whether we
can help them to relocate.
The refurbishment of the Buttercross area is now
underway and as explained previously this will provide
many new features and facilities. The work to install parking
machines in the centre car park will take place at the same
time to minimise disruption. More info on parking next
time. Sorry for the disruption and inconvenience whilst
the work is undertaken.
I hope you all have seen my feature in last month’s
newsletter regarding the “Poppy Display” which we plan
to start in early October. This is in conjunction with the
British Legion to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of
WW1. The concept is to have displays around town which
you, the public, can add to. Some will be internal like in
the Church and Museum and in shop windows and some
external. All the schools are on board to do displays and
many of the shop keepers. I really hope that you all will
want to participate to make this a really special time for
our Town. Any Poppy related or WW1 material, including
photographs etc, will be appreciated. Any contributions
can be dropped off at the Town Hall or could be collected.
Drop a line to me at the Town Hall. AND any ideas on what
realistically we could seek to do to keep Swaffham “on the
map” for residents and tourists
In Touch With Your Town
‘In Touch with your Town’ is put
together by the Town Clerk Richard
Bishop or occasionally by the Deputy
Town Clerk Claire Smith. It deals with
some of the most topical items of
the day and the odd item where the Council want to
share information with the Town.
“DON’T PANIC” it’s only DADS ARMY DAY at
Swaffham Market
Swaffham Market is hosting a ‘Dads Army Day on
Saturday 22nd September, the road will be closed in
front of Pedlar’s Gold from the Buttercross through
to the Swaffham Café. We are looking for any vehicles
of World War 2 era to come along – Jonesy’s Van will
be there with a Dads Army re-enactment group. It
will be as close to the real thing as we can get. There
will be entertainment and we have the Thursford
Organ too! Anyone who dresses in 40’s style will
be most welcome. Our traditional Market will be
in full swing, with lots of lots at Swaffham Auction,
Auction starts at 11am. Should be a great day, if
you are interested in playing your part please get in
WHAT’S GOING ON IN SWAFFHAM?
Better joined up working for Swaffham & Watton
Sue Dent has joined the team at Swaffham & Watton
Town Councils as ‘Events and Projects Support
Officer’ to promote events and projects in and around
both Towns. Her post is jointly funded by both Town
Councils and will also be working closely with both the
Iceni and Wayland Partnerships. There will be a real
emphasis on joined up thinking and trying to make
the most of opportunities that might apply to both
the Towns and the surrounding areas. In the short
term Sue will be helping to support existing events
and getting to know the groups and organisations that
do so much in both Towns. So, if you have anything
happening soon, or are planning for next year, do get
in touch with her at the Town Council or on 07776
BUTTERCROSS and TOWN CENTRE
– work in progress…
As reported in the newsletter last month, you now see
some fencing has been placed around ‘The Buttercross’
as work began on 13th August on some Town Centre
improvements, for a period of 15 weeks finishing
on 23rd November. Quinn Construction Ltd are the
appointed contractors for some necessary repairs and
refurbishment to ‘the Buttercross’ itself, some relaying
of cobbles to make the area flatter, reducing trip
hazards and more accessible to use; removing unsightly
electrical cables or structures, replacing with easily
available sockets and subtle lighting. There will be new
seating placed around the area of ‘The Buttercross’,
replacing previous seating removed as part of the
preparation for this scheme. Other improvements in
the Town Centre will be publicly available ‘Wi-Fi’, two
electric car charging points, 6 double electrical sockets
for use by Market traders and/or events within the Town
Centre and finally 6 new street lights. The Town Council
look forward to bringing our Town Centre into the
21st Century and sincerely hope that these measures
will provide opportunities in what is an ever-changing
Market Place and to enable Businesses, Community
Events and our Traditional Market the platform to thrive.
CHRISTMAS LIGHT SWITCH-ON & CHRISTMAS MARKET
TOWN COUNCIL ELECTIONS & REFERENDUM
As we approach the Autumn months your Town
Councillors will have one-eye on May next year, as the
Local Government Elections will take place once more
for both Swaffham Town Council and Breckland Council.
The Town Council recently agreed to do two taster
events “Do you want to be a Councillor?” one before
the end of 2018 and another as we get a little nearer the
election date in the new-year 2019. These events will
be targeting anyone who is thinking about standing for
election but would like to know a little more about the
Town Council before they take the final step. How do
we operate? What services do we run? What land and
property do we manage? What are we responsible for?
What exactly does a Town Councillor do? What is the
role of the Town Council within the community? How
does the Town Council fit in with Breckland Council and
Norfolk County Council? All of this and the opportunity
to ask that burning question you’ve always wanted to
ask… Look out for a future Swaffham Newsletter to see
the date, time and place coming soon…
The referendum referred to is for the Neighbourhood
Plan (see article below), as the Steering Group and the
Town Council are hopeful that this will be before the
Town Council elections in May. Again, look out in future
newsletters, it is your only chance to vote on a plan that
will be influential in how Swaffham develops over the
next 20 years. If you haven’t got involved to date, there
is a lot of information on the Town Council website
www.swaffhamtowncouncil.gov.uk if there is anything
you need to know, please ask, probably best not to wait
until you have your ballot papers in front of you which
will ask you a ‘Yes/No’ question, to either support the
plan or not.
IN MY BACK YARD
The Swaffham Neighbourhood Plan is a community-led
document for guiding the
future development of our
Town. It is about the use
and development of land
over the next 20 years. The plan will set out a vision and
aspirations for the future development of the Town and
will be an important document that will help influence
and control the way our town changes in the future,
including any new housing developments. This is the
eighth in a series of Articles designed to give you the
latest information on how we are progressing with the
development of our Neighbourhood Plan. This time it’s
a very short article as explained below:
On the 16th July the Council “signed off” the draft
document and printed copies. A public consultation day
was held in the Assembly rooms on the 18th July running
from 10am to 7pm. This was fairly well attended, and
it was good to talk to people about their issues and
concerns. This started a pre-submission consultation
period from then to 31st August 18. I hope that you
have taken this opportunity to get your views in. We will
now make final amendments and submit to Breckland
for independent evaluation. After such independent
evaluation and checking against Breckland’s Local
Plan, the absolute final document will come out to a
TOWN REFERENDUM to seek widespread support and
adoption. WE want all our town to support the Plan.
Remember it strengthens our position locally in helping
to determine planning applications and what shape we
want our town to develop to over the next 20 years.
