Rowling’s worldfamous Harry Potter books, the young protagonist and his wizard friends overcame challenging obstacles and bested wicked beasts with their wands in hand and a complex understanding of spellcasting. On Aug. 13, the young wizards of Glenview had to rely solely on their wits to beat the clock. Members of Griffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff joined forces to break out of a Harry Potter-themed escape room at the Glenview Public Library. Three groups of ten participants entered the room in the children’s section of the library with the intention of cracking the code to a lockbox in less than an hour. The participants, ages 10-13, first chose a house — none opted for Slytherin. Then the young wizards read a letter from Professor McGonagall and began searching for clues that would help them solve the puzzle. The activity was designed by library employee and devoted Harry Potter fan Meg Ramsland. After designing and organizing the library’s first escape room in the spring, Ramsland worked out a few kinks to ensure the best possible experience for the participants. Ramsland said she began planning the activity in April after the A Wrinkle in Time-themed escape room proved a big hit with participants and parents. She hid clues, keys and puzzles for participants to find in the strategically laid-out room. The first group of the day, which entered the room at 10 a.m., certainly demonstrated those qualities, finishing the puzzle in just 20 minutes. After the dynamic group located the final key and opened the lockbox, they found a unique wand inside for each participant. Ramsland excitedly told the members of the group they had beat the time of the librarians by a full 20 minutes. While the activity is meant to be a fun exercise, Ramsland believes it also serves a greater educational purpose. She said the type of learning it requires has become a major direction in the education world. “The ability to learn at your own pace and the ability to learn in an open space where it’s self-directed is something that a lot of educational programs are leaning toward,” Ramsland said. “Escape rooms are a great example of using your own knowledge within the space. You don’t have to do everything in order. You don’t have to do everything by yourself because you can rely on your teammates.” The library’s youth service program coordinator, Colleen Cochran, saw similar value in the “secretly educational” activity. She said it was great to be able to offer such a learning opportunity for free to young residents. “The opportunity to feel successful in a unique setting is maybe something that not many kids get to do all the time,” she said. “It’s educational without being obviously so, and I think they get to use different types of smarts.” Participant and Hufflepuff wizard Josiah Yang, 13, said he enjoyed the experience and looked forward to doing it again. “I enjoy solving problems. Due to high demand for the previous escape room activity, the library added a third group this time. In addition to Yang, several of the young participants said they would try their hand at another escape room in the future.
