His report was based on conclusions that were reached during a special meeting of the board in June. The subjects covered were homework, final evaluations as a component of a student’s grade, school calendars for 2019-20 and 2020-21, daily starting time at GBN, learning space environments, life-safety projects for the summer of 2019, safety and security enhancements, performance opportunities in the arts, the budget reduction plan for 2019 through 2022, and the selection process for Riggle’s successor as superintendent. From the Village Butterfly gardens grant The Village of Glenview is one of 26 northern Illinois public agencies to have received a 2018 Green Region grant from ComEd and Openlands. The $7,500 grant will be used to help create four high-visibility, public monarch butterfly gardens. For more information, visit glenview.il.us. Glenview reads together The Glenview Public Library on Aug. 13 chose the book for its new community-wide reading program. It is expected that a detailed plan for reducing the budget will be implemented during the 2019-2020 fiscal year and it will result in expenditure reductions over those three years. A committee of performing arts teachers, instructional supervisors and building supervisors will be convened in early September; data regarding student opportunities and participation will be collected during October and November; and a report on findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Board of Education in December. Bids for safety and security enhancement projects are scheduled to be approved from early to mid- March and these projects are scheduled for completion by September. Speaking of authors Glenview and the northern suburbs are home to many interesting people who have something to write about. Starting Thursday, Aug. 23, the show presents young adult authors Sarah Alan and Beth Barber. The programs are also uploaded on YouTube. Here are a few of the most recent featured authors: • Tom Weinberg — “Chasing the Lost City: Chronicles of Discovery in Honduras” • Peter Grable — “Nothing in Hell” • David Klow — “You are not Crazy: Letters from your Therapist” • Sally Stone — “Golden Words” and “I am a Butterfly” Back to school time Classes for most schools in Glenview start next projects will be presented to the Facilities Committee for review in September and to the Board of Education in late October or early November. Approval of bids is planned for early to mid-March, and September of 2019 is the target date for completion of the projects. Surveys of students and teachers will be conducted before and after they move to pilot classrooms from November through January and there will be an analysis of the results in May. The analysis is designed to measure the effect of the new learning space environments as compared to the original classrooms and the impact on student learning. A decision on the start time at GBN will be based on a financial analysis of the current transportation contract and the impact a new transportation agreement would have on grammar school feeder districts. The analysis is projected to be completed by November. The school calendar decision will be based on an all-encompassing survey of the school community to be conducted from mid to late September. An analysis of the data and findings will be presented to the board in late October. Based on the findings, the 2019-20 calendar is scheduled to be adopted by late October and the 2020-21 calendar by May. Discussions on types of evaluations and possible changes within departments to produce greater consistency will continue from September through January, at which time changes are expected to be implemented. The homework initiative is a follow-up to a 2016 baseline survey administered to students and teachers. Another survey will be conducted in November followed by comparative analysis of the 2016-18 results in February and/or March. week, which means backto-school safety should become a priority.
