Pushing and pulling experiments
Complete the following experiments to find out about forces.
Materials:
Balloon rocket push
• balloon • drinking straw • scissors
• fishing line/cotton about 4-5 m long
• 2 chairs • masking tape
I. Steps:
O Thread
fishing line
through straw.
f) Place chairs about 4 m
apart and tightly tie fishing line
between chairs.
E) Move straw to one end of line.
O Blow up balloon and twist open
end to seal.
C, Tape inflated balloon to straw.
8 Release neck of balloon.
2. Predict what will happen to the
balloon.
3. Write the results and an explanation
(or analysis) for what happened.
Materials:
Rubber band weight pull
• long ruler or length
of wood • pencil
• 2 tables
• strong rubber band
• paper strips • small plastic bucket
• strong wire • marbles
• scissors
I. Steps:
O Attach wire to bucket handle to
form hook.
f) Slip rubber band over wood to
middle.
E) Place wood between tables.
O Attach hook to rubber band to
suspend bucket.
C, Cut strip of paper the same
length as rubber band (with
bucket on it) and write O on it.
2. Predict what will happen to the
rubber band when one marble is
added to the bucket.

3. Cut new strip of paper the
same length as rubber band
and write I on it.
4. On the back of the worksheet, write
comments about the activity. Tell
what you liked about the experiment,
what worked and what didn't and
any improvements you would make
if you repeated the experiment.
