January/February, 1997 As I begin my fourth year of writing this column, I'd like to look back at a couple of items. 1 / If you missed Nicki Zwerin's article, "The caring clown -- Is this the toughest gig?" in the September/October, 1996, issue of The New Calliope, go look it up and read it now. If you read it, go back and read it again. In this article Nicki deals with the specific subject of clowning with the terminally ill in a hospice setting.What she has written applies not only to the hospice setting and not only to those spending a lot of time clowning in hospitals and nursing homes. What she has written applies to each and every clown that has any contact with people, young and old alike. Why? Because, sooner or later, you are going to be asked to go to a home, hospital, nursing home or hospice and visit a terminally ill patient. Yes, that translates into, "A person who is dying." Nicki recommends two books.One is Alan Klein's The Healing Power of Humor. Last summer at Clown Camp '96, Nicki told us in her class that this book is still in print and is available at most book stores. I found it very helpful. The other book she recommends is Delores Kuenning's Helping People Through Grief. This one is on my reading list to be read soon. 2. When I read my column in the September/October, 1996 issue of The New Calliope, I began stumbling and rereading the last paragraph. I was writing about the word "vulnerable" and its meaning. The sentence that I was having trouble with read, "An individual who is the opposite of the type of person described as one who could succeed in this day and age." Mrs. Bugg says she didn't have any trouble with it, but I sure did. If I did, maybe someone else did, too. Let me see if I can say what I was trying to say in that paragraph in a little simpler way. I have written the entire paragraph. The new sentences are in bold type: As I look at these words (from the definitions given in the dictionaries), the ones that stand out in particular for me are: sensitive, accessible, capable of being wounded, assailable, exposed and weak. This led me to think of naive and innocent. These words describe for me the type of person whom the world says wlll fall. This description Is Just the opposite of the type of person that the world Is looking for. According to the world, persons who are going to succeed,who are going to amount to something, must be strong, powerful and always thrusting forward that they might advance, succeed and overcome all obstacles that lie before them. In spite of this the clown is secure in his/her vulnerability. An individual secure enough to give security, meet emotional needs, not needing a wall between themselves and the rest of the world . An individual who brings humor and a sense of security into our personal world and one who can take the sticks and stones -- the hurts of the world - - and absorb them and show us their true littleness in the larger view. While I was wrestling with all this, trying to make a simpler statement, I received a letter from Dean Harris of Pflugerville, TX. He had taken the column to his Sunday School class on "Issues" at First United Methodist Church and used it as a discussion starter. Several wanted to share their reactions with me. I would like to share their reactions with you. Lise Wernt wrote, "The people who are in charge of 'officially' defining words tend to make the word vulnerable a negative thing. I like how you have turned that around." Amy Roberts commented, "The world would be a better place if everyone had the self-confidence of a clown. To take sneers and abuses with a smile. Self-confidence is the key here, I think." And then an unsigned comment: "One who is secure in his vulnerability is one who is at peace with God. This is very accurate.
