Rauschenberg: a 30-Year Retrospective
Center for Visual Communication, until 31 January
Seven months after Rauschenberg’s death at the age of 82, one of the most significant artists of the postwar
era is the subject of a major retrospective at the Center for Visual Communication’s new 10,000 sq. ft
gallery. On display are more than 70 works, including nine complete series and his last project: “The Lotus
Series,” 12 prints shown together for the first time. Each is characteristic of Rauschenberg’s massively
influential media mix of painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture. Above, Lotus VIII, 2008.
“Entertaining, lucid...
rigorous, precise reportage.” —Financial —Financial Times Times
“Thornton gives us a one-stop tutorial on an often insular subculture....
Seven Seven Days Days is light-hearted but sociologically acute, allowing us to both
laugh at and empathize with those for whom ‘contemporary art has become
a kind of alternative religion.’ Verdict: Read.” —Time —Time magazine
“The best book yet written about the modern-art boom....
A Robert Altmanesque panorama of…
the most important cultural phenomenon
of the last ten years.” —The —The Sunday Sunday Times Times
