Workshops & Seminars Friday, September 21, 2018 12 pm Easy Holiday Hors d’oeuvres – Tis the Season! How about some ideas for easy but delicious finger food and munchies? This workshop will also give advice on how to prep early so that you can enjoy the party with your guests and not be stuck in the kitchen. Presented by: Randi Remedio, A Difference in Dining Catering 1 pm Solar Energy Systems for your Home How on-grid and battery backup systems work and the financial incentives available for you – This workshop will cover what solar energy systems are: the different types of equipment being used today; options for how they are installed; the differences between on-grid, off-grid and battery backup systems: the amount of electricity they can produce and store; federal and state tax incentives. Presented by: Rob Clemons, Monarch Solar 2 pm Small Space Vegetable Gardening – Growing vegetables in your own landscape can be both rewarding and challenging. With limited space available to most home sites, many gardeners shy away from vegetable production. There are ways of growing those vegetables you like in very limited spaces. In this workshop you will learn how to grow vegetables in small spaces as well as what works well in those limited areas. A brief discussion on the Clemson Extension Master Gardener program will also be presented as a resource to educate you on growing conditions in South Carolina. Presented by: Gary Forrester, Clemson University Cooperative Extension, Senior Area Horticulture Agent/ Master Gardener Coordinator / Turfgrass Specialist. 3 pm Emergency Generators 101 – In this workshop we will discuss selecting the right backup power option for you. Portable Generators vs. Whole House standby generators. We will also be discussing selecting the correct size based on your home and most importantly your needs. We will also look at fuel sources for standby units and what local code requirements are for generators and fuel sources. Presented by: Tony Zack, Mr. Sparky.
Saturday, September 22, 2018 12 pm Cooking for Two – Some people just don’t like leftovers – so it’s not easy to cook for two. But this demo will help you buy the right amount. However, for those of you who like leftovers, here you will learn how to be creative with what’s left over to create an entirely different meal. Presented by Tom Mullally, Strand Catering and International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach 1 pm Green Gardening – Maintaining a landscape and vegetable gardening in our climate can be a challenge with the pest pressure we have in the south. However, there are ways to minimize or eliminate the use of pesticides in your garden by following good horticulture practices. In this workshop, we will discuss how to develop and maintain a landscape with minimal pesticide use. Presented by: Gary Forrester, Clemson University Cooperative Extension 2 pm Holiday Wreaths & Centerpieces – Life starts all over again when the air gets crisp in the fall. Pumpkins, gourds, scarecrows and sunflowers with colorful fall leaves in red, yellow and orange. In this workshop, you will learn how easy it is to create table centerpieces, wreath and door decor for your holiday decorating. Plus, the secrets to making the perfect holiday bow. Presented by: Debbie Gough, Designer, AC Moore 3 pm Staging & Home Improvement Tips that boost your home’s value – Staging your home to look like a model home can pay off when it comes time to sell your home. Not all home improvements increase the value of your home, so if you are planning on selling in a few years make sure you do the improvements that give the greatest return. Presented by: Cherie Hardy, SC Real Estate Network Sunday, September 23, 2018 1 pm Winter Gardening -Plants for Winter Color – Every gardener loves to plant colorful flowers and plants in their landscape. When gardening in the south, the winter can be a challenge when it comes to winter color. Many of the plants grown in more northern climates producing winter color have difficulties in our summer heat. There are plants that will survive our hot summers and still produce winter color, however, in this workshop you will be introduced to those plants and management of those plants that will bring a little color to a dreary winter landscape. By Gary Forrester, Clemson University Cooperative Extension. 2 pm Eat for Your Heart – Change is good for your heart & variety is the spice of life! Learn to prepare an exciting healthy CHOPPED SALAD using 17 different vegetables and a citrus vinaigrette! Chef DeWayne will also show you how to prepare vegetable kabobs, flavored waters, plus, the secrets of juicing. Presented by: Chef DeWayne Beaty, CHOPS Resident Chef, Personal Chef, & Caterer. 3 pm New Trends in Kitchen Design - Planning a new or remodeled kitchen?
