Ennis Friary
The Ennis Friary is a Franciscan Friary founded
by the O’Brien Kings of Thomond, in
the 13th century. The site was originally on
an island in the River Fergus around which
the modern town of Ennis has grown.. The
centre of the town at Woodquay. A recent
riverside development is a pleasant
walk, along which some superb pieces of
sculpture have been erected.
Clare
Ennis is the gate-
way to
County Clare.
The county is renowned
for its natural beauty.
The Burren limestone area
has many unusual features
that make it unique in Europe.
Its geology, flora, caves
and archaeology set it apart as
an area of great beauty and mystery.
Ailiwee Cave and the stunning Doolin Cave
are certainly worth visiting. The famous Cliffs of Moher stand as
800ft ramparts against the battering of the Atlantic Ocean. They
are majestic and offer superb views of the western Irish coastline.
Clare has a string of superb beaches within easy reach of Ennis,
some sandy and others rocky. The beach at Lahinch is renowned
for surfing. Lough Derg, at 32,000
acres, is the largest of the Shannon
Lakes. Along its shores are many picturesque
villages.
The South Clare coast hosts shoals of
Dolphins: boats regularly visit them
from Carrigaholt and Kilrush. A very
popular destination, to the south of
Ennis, is Bunratty Castle & Folk Park,
Ireland’s most complete and authentic
medieval castle. The Folk Park is a
fascinating recreation of 19th century
rural Ireland.
Other attractions worth a visit, outside
Ennis and its environs, include
the picturesque Burren Perfumery
& Floral Centre, the Burren Smokehouse,
which has preserved the art of
smoking salmon, the beautifully-constructed
vandeleur Walled Garden
in Kilrush, the stunning and rugged
Aran Islands, one of the last outposts
of gaelic civilisation and, if you’re
researching a local genealogy, the
Clare heritage Centre in Corofin.
