The Bug Farm - Just A Mile from St David’s<br />
The Bug Farm is a visitor attraction and scientific research<br />
centre all about bugs! Based on a 100 acre working farm in the<br />
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, The Bug Farm is a haven<br />
for flora and fauna and perfect for a day out with family or<br />
friends.<br />
Inside the converted farm buildings there is a Tropical Bug Zoo, a<br />
Bug Museum and Up Close sessions run though the day. Out and about<br />
there is a beautiful Walled Garden and guided Bug Hunts run through<br />
the summer season. The Bug Farm Trail is a unique outdoor space<br />
showcasing Pembrokeshire farming in small, bite size chunks. Visitors<br />
can explore the award-winning wildflower meadows, ponds and mini<br />
farming plots learning how we can produce food and look after our<br />
planet at the same time. There is also a Bug Barn where the children<br />
can run riot and an Art Gallery which doubles as a lecture theatre and<br />

workshop room, so keep your eyes peeled for visiting experts, events, and<br />
professionally-led craft workshops.<br />
If you are hungry you can indulge yourself at Grub Kitchen; the UK's first edible insect restaurant. Insects are always on the menu,<br />
although there are plenty of non buggy dishes too! Local, sustainable produce is used to create delicious, beautiful and innovative dishes that<br />
demonstrate how you can eat more sustainably now and for the future.<br />

Funding For First Rescue Hovercraft<br />
The volunteers who crew the lifeboat at Ferryside,<br />
Carmarthenshire, have welcomed a grant from the UK<br />
Government for a new rescue hovercraft, believed to be the first<br />
in Wales. This new vessel complements existing lifeboat use at<br />
Ferryside, a marine division of St John Cymru Wales and could<br />
potentially lead to more lives being saved. The funding (£30,800)<br />
has come from the Department of Transport, Inshore and Inland<br />
Rescue Boat Grant Scheme 2016/17.<br />
Ferryside Lifeboat operates in an area of three tidal river<br />
estuaries - at low tide, this means a large expanse of sand banks,<br />
mudflats, and meandering rivers often impossible to reach by<br />
boat or wheeled vehicle.<br />
Senior Coxswain, Ferryside Inshore Lifeboat, Anthony<br />
Rees said: “This is excellent news for Ferryside Lifeboat and<br />
the community. It will enhance our operating capabilities<br />
significantly and allow for a comprehensive 24/7 SAR service at<br />
any state of the tide. This will also allow us to become part of the<br />
national flood rescue response.”<br />
Ferryside Lifeboat and HM Coastguard will now work closely<br />
over the coming months to develop the skills, experience and<br />
operating procedures required to make the new craft an integral,<br />
effective and safe element of the rescue capabilities. U<br />
Help For Aspiring Engineers<br />
Brand new Pottinger machinery has been installed at Coleg<br />
Sir Gâr’s Gelli Aur campus to help agricultural engineering<br />
students study high-end technology onsite.<br />
Using European funding, the agricultural engineering team<br />
tendered for new machinery and as a result, Tallis Amos Group<br />
in Narberth supplied a Servo 25 plough and Davies Implements<br />
Ltd supplied a Power Harrow combination seed drill.<br />
Representatives from all organisations involved, including<br />
former students employed by Tallis Amos and Davies<br />
Implements, attended the Pottinger workshop. An insight<br />
into the extensive working knowledge of the machinery was<br />
given to both agricultural and engineering students by Barry<br />
Humphreys, territory service manager for Wales, North West<br />
and West of England and Clive Richardson, area service<br />
manager.<br />
Geraint Evans, Coleg Sir Gâr’s Agricultural Engineering<br />
Team Leader said: “We have a close working relationship<br />
with Pottinger as well as all the local dealers. Later on this<br />
year, we will be hosting trials on a new concept of companion<br />
cropping, simultaneously drilling maize and grass seed. The<br />
new machinery will further enhance the excellent teaching<br />
and learning experiences of our students. We are very aware<br />
of the need to supply engineers to work in such a fast growing<br />
technological and manufacturing industry.” U<br />
