Dear Members, 

THE JOURNEY IS THE REWARD – 

STEVE JOBS 

My heart is full of deep gratitude 

and I am thankful to each one of 

you for giving me the opportunity 

to serve the Dubai Chapter of ICAI. 

My journey with the Chapter started 

several years back as an Executive 

Committee Member, then as a 

Secretary, Vice Chairman and now as the Chairman. 

I feel proud to say that ICAI (Dubai) Chapter has made 

tremendous progress because of the collective hard work of 

our members and visionary leaders year after year. This year 

also ICAI (Dubai) Chapter won the Best Overseas Chapter 

Award for the 5th consecutive year from the parent body ICAI. 

My tenure which began on 30 September 2017 will conclude 

officially on 29 September 2018. This one year journey has 

been a wonderful experience for me and for my dedicated 

team of Office Bearers and Executive Committee Members. 

Our focus was to continue with the good work done by the past 

Chairmen and committees and keep on upgrading and lead 

Dubai Chapter to meet new challenges which we are facing 

in our professional field almost every day. We have left no 

stone unturned to meet your expectations and aspirations. I 

only wish to say one thing – A BIG THANK YOU – for allowing 

me to contribute to our wonderful and prestigious ICAI (Dubai) 

Chapter. 

UAE has implemented Value Added Tax (VAT) this year and 

our chapter has played a significant role in spreading the 

knowledge of VAT Law. Due to the efforts of our chapter, our 

parent body, ICAI has launched VAT Certification Course for 

the UAE. This is the first time a certification course is launched 

outside India. Our chapter organized first of its kind VAT Clinics 

not only in Dubai but also in other emirates like Sharjah, Ras 

Al Khaimah and Ajman. We also organized a VAT Clinic at 

the Indian Consulate and at the Khaleej Times Office. We 

conducted Online VAT Quiz, VAT Zero Hours, VAT Roundtable 

Conference, VAT Open Day, VAT Open World. 

Our chapter has received tremendous coverage from media. 

Number of TV Channels either partnered with us or covered 

our events which includes Times Now, CNBC Network 18, Zee 

TV, Zee Cinema, India TV, Republic TV. Not only the English but 

also Arabic, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi Newspapers 

covered our events extensively. 

Our Chapter has taken many new initiatives which include, ICAI 

(Dubai) Chapter Radio “News You Can Use”, Online Credit 

Card Payment, Online Quiz, Knowledge Based Games, Using 

Robot as a Part Speaker, Residential Study Camp, etc. One of 

the most important agenda of the year was to obtain Non Profit 

Incorporation Organization (NPIO) License in DIFC and I am 

happy to inform you that our chapter has been incorporated 

as an NPIO and opened its office in the DIFC which was 

inaugurated by Mr. Arif Amiri, CEO, DIFC on 29 August 2018. 

This year our chapter has added a massive 1,133 new members 

taking the membership count to 2,913 which shows that 38.89% 

of our members are new and have joined the Chapter in the last 

12 months. We have generated a record of 62 Events, 146 CPE 

Hours, 180 Speakers, Total Cumulative Attendance of 12,675 

Members and 54,962 Collective CPE Hours. These numbers 

demonstrate that our Chapter has grown from strength to 

strength and are testimony that we have been able to deliver 

on the milestones we had set for ourselves as a chapter during 

our first event on 7 October 2017 “Mega VAT Open Day”. 

Our Chapter has maintained good cordial relationships with 

the local community in the UAE and we have invited & hosted 

eminent Emiratis during our events. These dignitaries include 

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Hon’ble 

Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance, Government of UAE, 

Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General, 

General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai, 

His Excellency Saud Salim Al Mazrouei, Director of Hamriyah 

Free Zone and SAIF Zone. 

In addition, we have also had an opportunity to host Dr. 

Raed Safadi, Chief Economic Adviser, Dubai’s Department 

of Economic Development, Mr. Derek O’ Brien, Member of

I must say that this been a great journey of one year for our

MEETING WITH THE CONSUL GENERAL OF INDIA TO DUBAI 

The Managing Committee of ICAI (Dubai) 2017-18 met the 

Consul General of India to Dubai, His Excellency Shri Vipul 

at the Indian Consulate. They apprised the Consul General 

(CG) about the Chapter plans for the upcoming year and 

various events. Chairman CA Naveen Sharma assured 

the CG full support for Consulate events or programmes 

where ICAI can play a role.

INDIAN HIGH SCHOOL GROUP 

Chairman CA Naveen Sharma updated Dr. Ashok Kumar, 

CEO, IHS Group about the Chapter’s upcoming events and 

he particularly discussed about Mr. Anand Kumar, Super 

30 Fame. Dr. Ashok Kumar expressed his desire to host 

Mr. Kumar and assured his full cooperation to the Chapter.

MEGA VAT OPEN DAY 

7 OCT 2017 

EMEA addressed members on modern finance in the digital 

age. They conducted a live demonstration of a VAT mobile 

application that was especially developed for this event. 

Ms Sudha Sharma, Head - IPs & Events, Network 18 Media 

& Investments Limited, spoke about importance of Digital 

Branding of CAs. The event was attended by over 800 

members of ICAI (Dubai). 

This was followed by sessions from Mr. Rob Dalla Costa- 

Director VAT-KPMG Lower Gulf, CA Ankur Jain- Senior 

Manager VAT-KPMG Lower Gulf and CA Pratik Shah, 

Partner, Dhruva Advisors. 

ICAI (Dubai) began the 2017-18 term with the “Mega VAT 

Open Day” a technical seminar on Value Added Tax (VAT). 

With the then recently introduced UAE rules on VAT, this 

session was a unique opportunity for members to get the 

latest updates on VAT in the UAE from tax experts advisers, 

and businesses leaders, who shared best practices on 

implementation and compliance. 

The event was graced by the presence of Guest of Honour 

- Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director 

General, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners 

Affairs-Dubai and Chief Guest - Shri Vipul, Consul General 

of India to Dubai. Renowned speakers included Key Note 

Speaker - Ms. Devita Saraf, Founder, CEO and Design Head, 

Vu Televisions, a young and dynamic CEO spoke about 

Leadership and Innovation in the Millennial World.

Mr. Anand Kumar, an Indian mathematician best known for 

his Super 30 programme, coaches economically backward 

students for IIT-JEE, the entrance examination for the 

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

He addressed over 300 ICAI (Dubai) members on his 

journey, and shared inspiring narratives of his economically 

backward students who after being coached by him, are 

now working in leading organisations across India, UAE, 

USA etc. By 2017, 396 of the 450 students he trained had 

made it to IITs.

Speaker Rashmi Bansal’s first book, Stay Hungry Stay 

Foolish, traced the progress of 25 MBA entrepreneurs 

and sold over 500,000 copies. She sighted examples from 

her books and experiences, encouraging the audience to 

make their dreams come true. 

Savi Sharma, is the author of best-selling novel “Everyone 

Has a Story - An Inspirational Story of Dreams, Friendship, 

Love & Life”. 

She spoke about the “Book Keeping of your dreams” where 

she shared her life story of leaving her CA studies mid way 

to pursue her writing goals, and posed a series of questions 

to members about their passions and what they are doing 

to pursue them.

Mr. Anand Kumar also addressed over 1000 school 

students at the Indian High School, Dubai and Delhi Private 

School, Sharjah. 

He shared his story and those of his students, with them 

and encouraged them to work hard and persevere to 

achieve their goals in life. Mr. Sharma also shared that a 

movie was being made on his life story and experiences, 

starring Indian actor and superstar Hrithik Roshan. 

CA Nirav Shah, Director – FAME Advisory DMCC and 

CA Ashwin Dedhia, Mentor, FAME Advisory DMCC addressed 

more than 500 ICAI (Dubai) members on the challenges 

and issues of Group Registration, Case Studies, Scenario 

Analysis and conducted interactive Q & A sessions.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF

CA MEANS “CAN ACCOMPLISH” - 

4 NOV 2017 

ICAI (Dubai) organized a live audio-visual musical journey 

celebrating 100 years of Bollywood. 

The team of artists comprising singers and dancers 

enthralled an audience of 1000+ members and guests with 

their performances. Starting with glimpses of the earliest 

silent movies, followed by movies from the decades of 

the 50s, 60s, until the millennium. A talented troupe of 

singers and dancers captivated the audience with their live 

performance spanning several decades.

The events for month of November 2017 commenced 

with a speech and talk show with Mr. Derek O’ Brien. 

Mr. O’Brien, a Member of Parliament, Author, Television 

personality, Public Speaker and popularly known as 

a Quiz show host, addressed members how one can 

“accomplish” or succeed in life.

VALUE ADDED TAX (VAT) - 


Mr. O’ Brien said success is a four letter word; “fail”. 

He attributed many achievements in his life to first 

experiencing failure – which he considers as a pre 

requisite to achieve success! Accomplishment, he 

said, is what you make of yourself, whether it is as a 

parent, spouse or professional. 

A second master class workshop on VAT was organized 

where CA Nirav Shah, CA Ashwin Dedhia, CA Pratik 

Shah and CA Anurag Chaturvedi addressed members 

on the Business Impacts on sectors like Financial 

Service, Transport, Real Estate, Retail, Construction 

etc. A VAT Zero Hour was then conducted to address 

queries of the participants. 

His speech was followed by a “Talk Show” where Aakanksha 

Tangri, Journalist interviewed Mr. O’Brien and spoke about 

his career, early days as a quiz show host, his family, political 

career etc. 

Various topics such as the practical issues and 

challenges being faced with regards the UAE VAT 

law, along with case studies, scenario analysis and 

interactive Q&A sessions were conducted.

Mutual fund industry AUM recorded a compounded annual 

growth rate of 15.25% over financial years 2007-2017, with 

India being considered one of the preferred investments 

destinations globally, said Dr. Mohit Batra, Founder & CEO- 

Marketmojos. 

In a panel discussion that followed, Mr. Rajesh Kothari-MD- 

AlfAccurate Advisors Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Govind Agarwal-Director, 

AlfAccurate Advisors Pvt. Ltd. discussed commodity 

process, which are expected to remain firm, in which case 

inflation will move up, leading to possibly higher interest 

rates in the US and globally.

INSPIRING CHANGE - 21 NOV 2017 

“Email, social media, mobile web and big data reduced costs 

of searching, exchanging of information etc. However, we 

still cannot trust one another to transact without validation 

from bank or government. These intermediaries invade your 

privacy. Blockchain enables moving digital currency from 

one person to another, and removes the third party; speeds 

up movement; while lowering costs and creating a chain of 

transactions in a ledger that is open and publicly visible to 

all”, said Mr. Sirish Kumar, Co-Founder & CEO – Telr. 

A team from Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange (DGCX), 

Mr. Meng Chan Shu-Director of Business Development, Mr. 

Saugat Sur-Head of South Asia and Mr. Sudhan Sundaram- 

Head of Equity Products spoke about the opportunities 

in DGCX. For single stock futures, people can buy the 

underlying cash and instead of selling the futures in Indian 

markets, they call sell them in the DGCX market. 

In association with Vedanta Cultural Foundation and 

under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak 

Al Nahyan, Cabinet Member and Minister of State for 

Tolerance, an inspirational talk by Swami Parthasarthy 

was presented.

In his talk, Swamiji spoke of developing one’s intellect and 

learning to live and practice it. The event was conducted 

at the Dubai Opera, an architectural marvel in Dubai. 

This was the very first time that an event for ICAI (Dubai) 

was conducted at the Dubai Opera. 

ICAI (Dubai) made a contribution to this cause for each 

member and adult family member who participated in 

this walk. 

VAT CLINIC - 1 ST & 2 ND EDITION - 

25 NOV 2017 & 6 DEC 2017 

BEAT DIABETES WALK - 


On 25 November 2017, ICAI (Dubai) launched the very first 

VAT Clinic, with Khaleej Times. 

ICAI (Dubai) members and their families participated in the 

“Beat Diabetes Walk” at the Dubai Creek Park. 

The walk organized by the Landmark Group is to spread 

awareness on Diabetes and encourage everyone to live a 

healthy lifestyle by taking three simple steps; Take the Test, 

Eat Healthy and Get Active. 

A large group of ICAI (Dubai) members and their 

families participated in this 3 KM walk on a Friday 

morning in support of this healthy cause. 

This first of its kind concept, saw four VAT experts address 

an array of VAT queries that were received from members 

before the event, as well as questions from the members 

present on the event day. 

The speakers conducting this interactive session were VAT

CA Pratik Shah-Partner-Dhruva Advisors, CA Mayank

welcomed this initiative of ICAI (Dubai) and Khaleej Times. 

Following the successful launch of VAT clinic, second 

VAT clinic is conducted on 6th December 2017. 

This was attended by various executives and industry 

professionals. This edition, too, had a marathon Q&A 

session for nearly two and a half hours, enlightened 

the audience about how to meet the deadline as it 

approached. 

The speakers highlighted that VAT is going to be applicable 

in the entire ecosystem, and that this is something that 

businesses need to understand, whether they need to 

register or not.

For the very first time in the history of ICAI (Dubai), an 

event was conducted at the Indian Consulate, Dubai. The 

3rd edition of the popular VAT Clinic was conducted at 

the Indian Consulate, and was graced by the presence of 

H.E. Shri Vipul, Consul General of India to Dubai. 

VAT OPEN WORLD - 16 DEC 2017 

H.E. Shri Vipul lauded the efforts of ICAI (Dubai) in making 

members and others aware of the new VAT regulations 

through its events. 

With the release of Executive Regulations on VAT, the UAE 

Government cleared a final piece of legislation required 

to implement VAT in UAE effective 1 January 2018. 

Chief Guest, His Excellency Saud Salim Al Mazrouei, 

Director of Hamriyah Free Zone and SAIF Zone addressed 

members and guests present, and appreciated the work 

of ICAI (Dubai) in enlightening its members and people in 

the UAE about the VAT laws. 

The speakers at the event answered VAT related 

questions of members, and addressed industry specific 

queries on Real Estate, Free Zones etc. The speakers at 

this session were VAT experts, CA. Girish Chand Director- 

MCA Management Consultants, CA. Manu Nair-CEO- 

Emirates Chartered Accountants Group, CA. Sangeetha 

Nahar-Senior Manager- Finance-Dubai Properties Group 

and CA. Dilip Jain-VAT Lead, ICAI VAT Faculty. Over 200 

ICAI (Dubai) members, NRIs and guests attended this 

event. 

Speakers Ms. Clare McColl, Head of Indirect Tax and 

CA Ankur Jain, Senior Manager – VAT from KPMG 

demystified Executive Regulations, by mapping them 

to the VAT Law. This was followed by a session by Mr. 

Mansoor Sarwar, Director Technical Services & Pre Sales, 

Sage Middle East on digitalizing VAT. 

Master Abhiraj Gupta, the youngest speaker of 14 years 

addressing the audience, conducted a short session on 

VAT and Arabic language – which may be a key element 

in the VAT regime. A VAT sectoral snapshot was delivered 

by CA Pratik Shah-Partner-Dhruva Consultants, and CA 

Deepak Agarwal, Director - VAT, PWC discussed “Change

Management” during the transition period from being a 

non taxable environment to a taxable one. 

A detailed sector wise analysis of VAT on sectors 

of healthcare, manufacturing, free zones and retail 

was conducted in a panel discussion with speakers

STUDENT EVENT ON OVERVIEW 

ON VAT - 27 DEC 2017 

VAT CRUISE - 


The first students session for the term was conducted on 

27 December 2017. The students were addressed by CA 

Naveen Sharma, Chairman, ICAI (Dubai) who encouraged 

them to grasp as much as they can on new legislations and 

applicable law, to give them an edge in the UAE. 

They were also addressed by CA Smruti Mishra, Executive 

Committee Member, ICAI (Dubai) and DCASA Chairperson 

for the year. 

At the first ever “VAT Cruise” organized by ICAI (Dubai), 

more than 15 tax experts responded to ICAI members’ 

queries on different sectors. 

“VAT will bring in confidence of the outside world into the 

UAE’s system of accounting and transparency. 

Whereas earlier there was no need for a book of 

accounting because there was no taxation” said CA. G.R. 

Mehta, former chairman of ICAI (Dubai). 

The VAT Overview was conducted by CA Anurag Chaturvedi, 

Managing Partner, Chartered House, who gave the students 

a detailed understanding of VAT concepts, executive 

regulations and industry specific examples from the 

insurance sector. 

This was the first time ICAI (Dubai) conducted an 

interactive VAT Session while cruising on Dubai waters! 

The Multiple VAT experts asked multiple questions 

related to VAT implementation in United Arab Emirates 

and also related Information Technology system and 

challenges faced by the various type of industries.

DASTAAN-E- RAJINDER KRISHAN - 

5 JAN 2018 

3 Emirates - 3 Events - 1 Day. For the very first time, 

3 events were held simultaneously in 3 Emirates in the UAE. 

9 VAT experts answered queries from members and guests 

in the 3 Emirates, in this first of its kind event at ICAI (Dubai). 

This was the first time ICAI (Dubai) conducted events at 

Masrah Al Qasba Auditorium (Sharjah), Ramada Hotel & 

Suites (Ajman) and Hilton Garden Inn (Ras Al Khaimah). 

Key issues and concerns of individuals and corporate executives 

around various areas like registration, industries and free zones 

etc. about the then upcoming value-added tax (VAT) were 

addressed at the three forums. 

A musical drama celebrating the life and lyrics of legendary 

poet Rajinder Kishan was presented in association with the 

Ibaadat Foundation. 

Members and their families enjoyed a musical tribute 

which educated and entertained members with episodes 

from his life. 

The two and a half hour musical drama weaved strands 

of the great poet’s life and his work together, and starred 

Rajesh Duggal (Krishan’s son) and Sangeeta Gupta (music 

maestro Madan Mohan’s daughter).

Telangana state’s cabinet minister, said the need of the hour is to

“International investors are bullish on India with the 

economy maintaining an average annual growth rate of 

about 7.3 per cent, positioning the nation as the world’s 

fastest growing large economy,” Consul-General of India 

to Dubai Vipul said. 

On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, ICAI (Dubai) organized its 

first ever overnight stay – residential learning event. Over 50 

ICAI (Dubai) members and family members participated in 

the sunrise yoga and fitness activities organized. 

Various events were organized for family members and 

children including beach volleyball, egg hunting, BBQ dinner 

etc. and everyone spent the night in beach side tents. 

Addressing ICAI (Dubai) members on the Indian Budget 

2018 held jointly with Zee Network he said that over the past 

four years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government 

has been successful in improving India’s ‘Ease of Doing 

Business’ rankings from 142 to 100. He said the Indian 

budget is broad-based and positively impacts a greater 

number of people, resulting in higher incomes for them 

and overall higher growth. “We look forward to the UAE’s 

partnership in this journey by further strengthening our 

already strong trade and investment relationship,” said the 

Consul-General.

An experts panel discussion was also conducted by 

moderator CA. Anil Bhardwaj-Director Arenco Group, 

with a panel comprising Mr. Mohan G. Valrani Sr.- 

Chairman and Managing Director-Al Shirawi Group, Mr. 

Vijay Malhotra-CEO and Chairman-KPMG Lower Gulf 

Limited and Mr. Vivek Law. The panelists discussed the 

impact of the budget on NRIs and investments.

Vivek Law, CEO and Editor-in-Chief, The MoneyMile, said 

the reintroduction of Long Term Capital Gain (LTCG) 

would be counter-productive. “For the past 25 years, 

successive governments have been encouraging to bring 

investors to the capital market, but the reintroduction of 

LTCG will do the opposite.” 

Dr Sachidanand Shukla, Chief Economist, Mahindra & 

Mahindra, praised the government for not bringing any 

major change into the taxation while focusing on the 

expenditure and completing projects announced by the 

previous government in various sectors. 

Anuj Puri, Chairman, Anarock Property Consultants, 

provided insights into the real estate sector. He praised 

the government’s efforts for passing the Rera and GST 

bill, which will prove be a game changer in the coming 

years.Dinesh Kanabar, CEO, Dhruva Associates, decoded 

the Budget 2018 sector by sector, one provision after 

another. 

He also explained the LTCG provision and its calculation 

and impact. Key points of the Indian Union Budget 2018 

and its analysis were led by Mr. Vivek Law-CEO & Editorin-Chief,

A session on the budget implication specifically on 

the real estate sector was conducted by Mr. Anuj Puri-

to change rather than the way we want to change them. 

Whether you’re at office or home, use the traditional 

model of a leader - ask, listen, think, thank, respond, 

involve, change and follow up,” he said. 

“We spend a lot of time talking about how smart we are 

and that reduces productivity. For a great leader, the

most important factor for a successful change is the 

client, not the coach. Coaching should not be about 

your ego,” said Dr Goldsmith, who is known as a 

world authority in helping successful leaders achieve 

positive, lasting change in behaviour for themselves, 

their people and their teams. Dr Goldsmith 

emphasized that the interpersonal communication is 

pretty important for a good leadership but majority of 

people - 65 per cent - spend time about how smart, 

special and wonderful they are.

The next speaker was artist, philanthropist and social 

worker Rouble Nagi, who has undertaken “Misaal Mumbai” 

a slum painting and sanitation project in Mumbai, which 

has painted over 7000 houses in the city. In an interactive 

session, she spoke to CA. Smruti Mishra about the project, 

art as a profession and encouraged all those present to 

do whatever they can to help those less fortunate than 

themselves. 

Deepa Malik, Paralympic Champion then addressed those 

present about her journey from paralysis to Paralympics, 

where she spoke of all the trials and tribulations she 

underwent, and continues to face, in her journey to the 

Paralympics. She narrated various incidents from her life 

which are an inspiration to all. 

Bollywood actress Amyra Dastur then spoke to the guests 

about her life and journey in Bollywood. The evening ended 

with a musical show by Charu Semwal, Indian Idol Finalist, 

who enamored the audience with her lively and melodious 

singing performances! 

ICAI (Dubai) organized a day long get-together for 

members and their families, at Zabeel Park in Dubai. 

The full day event included activities like a play area and 

face painting for children, painting competitions, Rangoli 

competitions, sports and games, photo booth etc. 

Renowned singer and dancer “AJ” enthralled the audience 

with his live acts. This was followed by painter and artist 

Dhaval Khatri, who lost both his hands as a child, painted 

on a canvas live in front of the audience and was given a 

thunderous applause by the 2000+ audience were present. 

A “Golden Bingo” was conducted where winners walked 

away with prizes in gold. A raffle draw was also held where 

prizes ranging from an iPhone X to airline tickets were won.

The first overseas study tour of this term saw over 100 

ICAI (Dubai) members and their families travelling to Bali, 

Indonesia in March 2018. 

A masterclass on the VAT reporting and compliance was 

held where important subjects such as the preparation and 

filing of returns, content and reconciliation of FTA Audit 

Files were led by faculties CA. Nirav Shah, CA. Anurag 

Chaturvedi, CA. Rajiv Hira and CA. Mayank Sawhney. 

The first technical session of the Study Tour was “Are 

you there? A Wealth Management Primer” conducted 

by CA. Krishnan Ramachandran-CEO, Barjeel Geojit 

Securities, where he discussed wealth management and 

investment opportunities for individuals across different 

age groups. Group discussions and team activities were 

carried out where attendees discussed investments 

opportunities and trends. Morning yoga sessions were 

led by Ms. Sunita Sharma-a certified instructor from the 

Art of Living Foundation.

Information management, record keeping, accounting as 

well as practical business scenarios were discussed. This 

was followed by a VAT Zero Hour, where several questions 

of attendees were discussed and clarified by the VAT 

experts. 

According to CA. Mayank Sawhney, one of biggest issues 

is that suppliers’ invoices are improper. “Most of the 

suppliers’ invoices are coming without their proper names, 

addresses and TRNs [tax registration numbers], which will 

create problems for companies to claim input tax on that. 

Because their systems are not proper, they have not done 

the right treatment of certain transactions.” 

CA. Nirav Shah said not everyone is prepared for filing tax 

returns. “It appears people are only focusing on the format 

with 8 or 9 fields, which needs to be populated. 

We encourage people to start filing in time. Since a lot of 

effort goes in to compiling the data, it will take a while for 

the people and companies to settle down. We expected it 

will take 6 months to fully comply and appreciate it,” he 

pointed out.

He said that the theme of the conference “Evolution 

Through Innovation” confirms that you do not fear change,

He urged the Chartered Accountants to nourish the 

admirable characteristics of tolerance both professionally 

and personally, they enhance not just accountancy but the 

human condition as well.

The Chief Guest of the conference, H.E. Sheikh Nahyan 

Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Cabinet Member and Minister 

of Tolerance, Government of UAE, inaugurated the

India to UAE, compared how the theme reflects the rapid 

evolution of Dubai, from a sleepy desert to a sparking 

metropolis. Ambassador also highlighted the innovations 

and evolutions made between the remarkable relationship 

of India and United Arab Emirates.

CA. Naveen N D Gupta, President ICAI India shared some 

humble beginnings of ICAI (Dubai) Chapter, first chapter 

out of the 31 overseas chapters which was started from 50 

members which has grown up to over 3000 members. The 

president also shared the launch of new curriculum and new 

strategic changes for future chartered accountants. The 

achievement of 10 million CPE hours program conducted 

by members across the nation for the last 3 years.

CA. K Raghu, Past President, 2014-15 of ICAI, India, spoke 

about global opportunities and challenges in the profession 

in the era of innovation. He shared that several countries 

including Australia have opportunities for Indian CAs, which 

they must capitalize on. 

Shri Raja Choudhury, Film Maker and Producer of Indian 

Official Global Film, Celebrating International Day of Yoga, 

spoke about how India has given the world numerous 

things including the number zero and yoga. 

Padma Shri awardee Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta, talked about 

how we can bring about unleash creativity and innovation 

in our lives - with simple examples such as setting up of 

innovation groups, just like the recently organized VAT 

Clinics at ICAI Dubai.

Adapting to Disruptive Innovation, shared how the media 

and film industry has undergone a significant change in the

entertainment, users can access a wide range of content

produced only for the online platform. 

H. E. Shri Vipul, The Consul General of India to Dubai shared 

the continuous good relationship of India and UAE. He also 

mentioned the last visit of Shri Narendra Modi and other

Mr. Jaivardhan Singh, Youngest Member of Legislative 

Assembly of Madhya Pradesh, spoke about innovative 

education and healthcare measures being undertaken in

A Technical Seminar on Recent Updates on Value 

Added Tax (VAT) and Microsoft Excel for Chartered 

Accountants was organized at Roda Al Bustan, 

Airport Road, Dubai. 

This was followed by a session on Mergers and 

Acquisitions: M & A Landscape, Process Overview 

and deal structuring, key trends , and how CAs can 

make a career in M&A by CA. Kanhaiya Rathi, CEO and 

Managing Director, Aspire Cap. 

CA Anurag Chaturvedi comprehensively covered recent 

VAT updates that are beneficial to members working 

in industry, practice, or consulting. 

This was followed by a session by CA Naveen Ajmera 

together with CA Anurag Chaturvedi on “What’s new 

in Excel – Automate your tasks with Power Query 

and How to automate VAT Returns” using Excel 

and Power BI tools, which was followed by interactive 

Questions and Answers session. 

The event was attended by more than 600 members 

and guests.

A Technical Seminar on New International Financial Reporting 

Standards (IFRS) was organized on 18th August 2018 at Roda 

Al Bustan, Airport Road. The event started with a session on 

overview of IFRS 16 with predecessor IFRS General Principles 

& Scope, Identifying, Embedding & Accounting for Leases by 

Mr. Yusuf Hassan, Partner - Accounting Advisory Services, 

KPMG Lower Gulf Limited, Dubai. 

A session on Overview and comparison of IFRS 15 with 

predecessor IFRS, General Principles & Scope, the 5-step 

model for recognizing revenue, identifying performance 

obligations, contract modifications, non-refundable upfront 

fees, variable consideration by CA. Abhinav Dhamija, 

Associate Director – Accounting Advisory Service, Mayur 

Batra Group, Dubai. 

Another session was on IFRS 9 – Financial Instruments, Classification 

& Measurement, Financial Assets, Impairment, Hedging by Mr.

25 AUG 2018 

A Breakfast meeting was organized on 25th August 2018 on 

the topic “Learning is a Journey” at Roda Al Bustan, Airport 

Road. CA Sanjay Manchanda, CEO of Nakheel PJSC 

advised members to work hard and improve knowledge on 

a regular basis. He has shared his journey in a talk show 

with Mr Tariq Qureishy, Founder / CEO of MAD Talks.

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter got the NPIO License from DIFC and 

Chapter’s Office was inaugurated on 29th August 2018 by 

Mr Arif Amiri, Chief Executive Officer, DIFC. 

This marks yet another landmark for ICAI as it integrates 

itself further into the financial space of the UAE. 

The DIFC is the foremost financial hub for Middle East, 

Africa and South Asia. The registration with an organization 

of this magnitude puts the ICAI (Dubai) into the very heart 

of the financial activity in the region 

perspective and financial independence she learnt along 

the way. She valued financial independence and worked 

towards it from a relatively early age of 16 while continuing 

her education. 

Her talk was followed by a Q&A session led by Mr. Ashvin 

Gidwani, Founder & MD, AGP World and CA. Naveen 

Sharma, Chairman, ICAI (Dubai). With her passion for 

environmental conservation she has lent her support to 

numerous animal, wildlife and environmental causes and 

appreciated ICAI (Dubai)’s CSR efforts while encouraging 

more such activities including waste management to be 

taken up by professional organisations. She has been 

appointed as UN Environment’s Goodwill Ambassador 

for India and was recognized by the United Nations for 

her contribution to environment conservation. 

The event also saw the celebration of milestone 

achievements of the year, such as achieving 54,962 

cumulative CPE hours, and a cake cutting ceremony 

was held. 

REEL TO REAL - REDEFINING THE 

IDEA OF SUCCESS - 1 SEP 2018 

Dia Mirza, actress, model, producer and beauty queen, 

spoke to ICAI (Dubai) members and guests on redefining 

the idea of success. In an honest and candid talk, she 

talked about her life journey and the importance of honesty,

ICAI (Dubai) hosted its annual bowling tournament on 

7 September 2018. Over 350 members and their families 

participated in the event. 

ICAI (Dubai) has organized an event on how to work, live and 

migrate to USA. Mr Prakash I Patel has given comprehensive 

overview of immigrant investment program, visa categories 

and also explained the importance of regional center 

selection. 

Mr Ryan Conway explained how to secure US Visas 

permanent residency. He also emphasized on lawful 

sources of funds, due diligence and tax planning. 

A large number of Members participated in this Event and 

many queries were resolved relating to VISA and other 

migration procedures.

NEW INITIATIVES 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter Radio 

ICAI (Dubai) launched its radio show “News You 

Can Use” on 26 April 2018. A unique radio show that 

keeps the listeners abreast with important news & 

views on important matters affecting their daily lives. 

Topics including prevalent UAE laws, government 

policies & regulations, innovation, employment, real 

estate, technology, VAT, NRI matters etc. The following 

dignatories participated in the programme. H.E. Mr Vipul, 

Consul General, H.E. Saud Salim Al Mazruei, Dr. Azad 

Moopen, Mr Mohan Valrani, CA Naveen Sharma, Mr 

Mayur Bhatra, Mr Anurag Chaturvedi, Rizwan Sajan, Ms 

Juhi Yasmeen Khan, Mr Dinesh Kothari, Dr Shafi Ul Mulk,

Online Quiz 

The Mega VAT Open Day saw the introduction of the 

“Online Quiz” from the ICAI (Dubai) website and Facebook 

page. The winners were selected at the event by online 

draws, and were presented with iPads. A similar quiz 

was also conducted at the VAT Open World. 

VAT Zero Hour 

A “zero hour” similar to that in Parliament was introduced 

this year, where an hour long Q&A was conducted at 

the VAT Masterclass. Members raised their queries and 

questions to the expert speakers, who addressed these. 

VAT Games 

VAT Games were introduced at the VAT Open World, 

where a live “VAT Bingo” was conducted for members to 

participate in. Winners were presented with prizes and 

gift vouchers. 

VAT Cruise 

For the first time ICAI (Dubai) conducted an interactive 

VAT Session on a cruise. More than 15 tax experts 

responded to ICAI members’ queries on different sectors, 

while cruising over the Dubai Creek. 

New Venues 

DUBAI OPERA - “Need of the Hour, Voices Inspiring 

Change” was held at the Dubai Opera on 21 November 

2017, which was the first time ICAI (Dubai) was associated 

with an event organized at this architectural marvel. 

SHARJAH, RAK & AJMAN VENUES - The first time 

ICAI (Dubai) conducted events at Masrah Al Qasba 

Auditorium (Sharjah), Ramada Hotel & Suites (Ajman) 

and Hilton Garden Inn (Ras Al Khaimah). 

Oracle Zayed Innovation Hub, the new State of the Art 

Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning of 

Oracle Middle East, Building 6, Dubai Internet City, An 

event on Modern Finance in Digital Era – Rise of Digital 

Chartered Accountants was conducted on 23 Jun 2018.

NEW INITIATIVES 

INDIAN CONSULATE - VAT Clinic was held at the Indian 

Consulate. 

Indian International School Auditorium - ICAI (Dubai) 

hosted the Sufi & Qawwali event at the new venue Indian 

International School Auditorium, Dubai Silicon Oasis. 

VAT Clinics 

For the first time, the concept of a VAT ‘Clinic’ was 

introduced by ICAI (Dubai),where at the session, VAT 

experts addressed VAT related queries received from 

members prior to the event, as well as queries from 

the audience present at the event. Such clinics were 

conducted during November 2017 - January 2018. 

Simultaneous Meetings 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter introduced “Simultaneous Meetings” 

this year, when 3 meetings in 3 Emirates took place 

simultaneously on the same day. 3 VAT Clinics were held in 

Ajman, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah on 13 January 2018. 

Online CPE Events 

The first online CPE event of ICAI was held on 9 February 

2018 on VAT. and another one on 9th June 2018. Large 

number of members partcipated in the event. 

Unstructured CPE Events 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter introduced unstructured CPE hours for its 

members by arranging 3 meetings where members can claim 

unstructured CPE hours by attending the events. 

Live Screening of IPL Match 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter organized IPL play off match screening 

for members and their families 

Online Credit Card Payment & 

Automation of Receipts 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter started online Credit Card Payment 

facility for its members. Members can now make their 

membership payment throught credit card and the receipt 

of the same will be sent to their respective Email ID. 

Robot as a Part Speaker 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter had Robot as a part speaker in its 

Modern Finance in Digital Era – Rise of Digital Chartered 

Accountants event. 

Overnight Residential Camp 

An overnight residential camp was held on 15 February 

2018 in Ras Al Khaimah where Yoga and other wellness 

activities were conducted for members and their families.

• Coaching classes for CA Students 

Overseas office, Dubai is spearheading the coaching 

for CA Students with regular support to the students at 

regular intervals. 

The office conducted coaching for CPT, IPCC/Intermediate 

and Final students where many have benefitted. The 

result of the students who have been facilitated with the 

support of coaching has always been very good. 

CA Results in Dubai Centre 

Intermediate Coaching Classes has been programmed to 

start from 1st week of Sept. to cater the needs of May 2019 

CA Exam. 

Final Coaching Class 

Final Coaching Class conducted for November 2017 Exam 

with 16 students from August 2017 to October 17. 

Final Coaching Class conducted for May 2018 Exam with 

16 students from February 2018 to April 2017.

Advanced ICITSS – ITT Course 

2nd batch of 100 Hrs of Advanced IT Training were 

conducted at ICAI (Dubai) Office during the period from May 

2018 to June 2018 and 10 students attended the trainings 

and successfully completed their online examinations. 

100 Hrs of IT Training 

IT Training course was conducted at ICAI (Dubai) Office 

during the month of May to June 2018. A total of 12 

students have completed their Advanced IT Training during 

this period. 

Intermediate Course 

Conducted Coaching Class for Intermediate Students for 

appearing their May 2018 Exam starting from Sept. 17 till 

March 18 and 17 students attended for the same. 

90 Hours of Orientation Programme 

90 Hours of Orientation Programme was conducted at 

our ICAI (Dubai) Office at Knowledge village during June 

to July 2018. A total of 11 Students have completed their 

orientation course.

At the Initiative of Indirect Tax Committee and Dubai 

Chapter of ICAI, Faculty Identification Programme has

conducted in 2 phases and finally identified 32 members 

and gave additional Training for the members with the 

experts to conduct VAT classes for Dubai Office. We are 

regularly conducting VAT courses with the trained faculties 

and all the faculties are delivering the class exceptionally 

good and more members also showing interest to 

participate in such training programmes in the future.

FOR THE FIFTH CONSECUTIVE TIME 

The ICAI (Dubai) won the Best Overseas Chapter Award for the fifth consecutive time. 

The award was received by the leadership of the Chapter at the event organized by ICAI in New Delhi. 

146 HOURS OF CPE CREDIT FOR 2017-18 

The ICAI (Dubai) organized several events during the year, such as open day, workshops,

in Kerala, India. CA Venkatraman known as ‘pencilman’, will 

also be supporting 50 schools in the south Indian state by 

supplying free stationery items and uniforms. 

Since CA Venkatraman is also associated with the Emirates 

Red Crescent, he has also been working as a conduit 

between corporates, schools and charity organizations. 

His coordination helped a radio drive collect 7.5 tons of 

relief items for Kerala flood victims. 

CA Venkatraman is waiting for the situation in Kerala to 

stabilize so that he can personally visit the schools and find 

out the condition and requirement. He will then choose the 

50 schools in the most remove areas to support them. 

CA Venkatraman said “Gradually we will be sending colour 

pencils, uniforms and more stationery items. So the plan 

is to give out items to about 1,000 schools in Kerala by 

October end”

Evolution through innovation, Evolution is a gradual and consistent 

process that occurs due to the presence of creative & intellectual people 

who don’t restrict their imagination and believe that every change can make our 

future secure and better. 

We observed innovation in the financial industry, which made flow of financial 

transactions evolve to the new level. Money is now moving from one jurisdiction 

to another in just a fraction of minute. This speed of transaction also generated 

challenges where the task is to restrict the financial transactions, restrict the flow of bad money i.e. to ensure 

compliance to Anti Money Laundering & Counter-terrorist financing (AML/CTF). 

There are various mechanisms innovated and in the process of evolution, various steps are taken to ensure 

compliance to AML/CTF. Financial industry is getting challenged to innovate and evolve in the process of 

compliance for trade and commercial transactions. Indirect taxation plays an important and integral part of 

compliance in global markets. 

Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of the indirect tax where trail of transaction gets established for every sales and 

purchase in the economy, in one way, we can say it’s a traditional Blockchain, which is improving day by day. 

This introduction of VAT in the region will help financial industry to take benefit of the change and innovate 

to ensure compliance to the AML/CTF, to facilitate risk free global economy and attain sustainable growth.

and media presence with chequered execution plan, building vat leaders on way, effective media presence 

on vat updates has been a best example of how innovative inclusive planned strategy can bring pride and

“We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost” were the 

words with which Mr. Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, ended his speech 

in 2013. These nine (9) words are enough to justify the theme of ICAI (Dubai) 

Chapter for Annual Conference 2018. Nokia, which was one of the leading 

brand in early 2000; lost battle to other brands in 2013 due to lack of 

innovation. Innovation is key for continuous evolution, else we may end up 

with a history similar to Nokia. 

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter has been instrumental in innovating new means and ways of adding value to 

members and society at large. Witnessing 36th Year of Excellence and being awarded “Best Oversees 

Chapter” year after year are self-explanatory achievements of chapter which believes in innovation and 

this torch of innovation is getting effectively passed year on year from one committee to another. Kudos 

to the current torch-bearers (Executive Committee) of Innovation and wish the evolution continues for 

years ahead for the chapter.

fear to innovate. Others attribute lack of innovation as the cause of 

downfall e.g. Kodak. 

Uber is an excellent example which enhanced simplistic mobility experience 

for customers through GIS and GPS. Tesla has challenged the traditional utilities. Apple, Alibaba, 

Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, Baidu, etc. have had significant influence on the traditional sectors 

through innovation. 

Innovation is no longer an option; it is a fact of life and here to stay.

“Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.

Studies for providing their auditorium with state 

of the art facilities for conducting events of the 

chapter. 

It is with immense gratitude that we acknowledge 

the continuous support and parental guidance 

provided by the President, Vice President, Secretary, 

members of the Central Council of ICAI New Delhi, 

the staff of the International Affairs and other 

departments of ICAI in successfully organizing the 

Chapter activities. 

We also express our sincere gratitude to CA. 

Manoharan P. Thulicheri, for auditing the Chapter’s 

financial statements on honorary basis. We 

also place on record our sincere appreciation 

to all our Sponsors for supporting us in all our 

activities during the year 2017-18. The efforts of 

the Managing Committee were greatly assisted 

by various members who served on the Sub- 

Committees and we thank them for rendering their 

services to the Chapter. 

The contribution of CA. Janak B. Panjuani in 

ensuring that the annual elections are conducted in 

a fair manner is commendable. He has undertaken 

the task of Election Officer on a completely 

honorary basis and has maintained the position 

with grace and dignity. We place on record his 

contribution to this Chapter. 

We express our thanks to CA. Shailesh Mulki, past 

member of our chapter, now residing in Canada, 

who has been responsible for preparing the Weekly 

Economic Updates for the benefit of the members. 

We also take this opportunity to thank CA. Karuna 

Luthar, for her effort and continuous support 

during the Social Audit of the chapter. 

The efforts of the Managing Committee have 

been aimed at providing the members a platform 

to enhance their professional knowledge through 

the various technical seminars, workshops and 

conferences that have been conducted throughout 

the year. The sports, social and entertainment 

events, overseas study tours and CSR activities 

that have been conducted provided great learning 

and enjoyment for the members and their families. 

The unstinting support and contribution from the 

members have been very encouraging and the 

Managing Committee acknowledges that these 

have been the main factors that have contributed 

to the success of all the events conducted during 

the year. 

We extend our sincere appreciation to all of you 

and look forward to your continued support to the 

Chapter activities in the year to come.
