frankfortstation.com school the frankfort station | September 13, 2018 | 11 Lincoln-Way East Key Club sponsor honored by Will County Submitted by Lincoln-Way East Community High School District 210 On Sept. 4, Project Acclaim’s secretary, John Zalanka, presented Key Club Sponsor Matt Jordan with the Reverend James E. Allen Award for Service to the Community. The award was presented in the board room of Lincoln-Way Central among community members during the monthly team asset meeting. The James E. Allen Award for Service to the Community aims to highlight those who make a positive impact in Will County. According to the Project Acclaim website, nominees must meet eight criteria: • Selfless devotion of community by direct action • Live in the Joliet or Will County region • Performed action above and beyond the usual call of duty • Action has communitywide impact • Improved the life or well being of individuals • Action noted promotes Project Acclaim vision or mission • Action enhanced the best interests of the community • Actions observed can be singular or repeated events, not necessarily associated with a long term activity or career “I have a soft spot for Key Club sponsors. Photo submitted what the needs are out there.” Jordan has served as Key Club sponsor for 11 years between his time at Lincoln- Way North and Lincoln- Way East. Last year’s program hosted 90 students, and this year’s number of participants is expected to grow. Jordan was nominated by Forest Preserve District of Will County Volunteer Services Supervisor Renee Gauchat, who has worked closely with Jordan while guiding Key Club members in the staffing of local forest preserve programs, events and projects. “It really is just a reflection of the kids,” said Jordan. “You get a good group of kids who want to serve and they can really take charge of their own service; I just point them in a right direction. It’s really good simply to see them grow in their leadership and see them get involved in the community.” Lincoln-Way East student completes AFJROTC Flight Academy program Submitted by Lincoln-Way East Community High School District 210 Lincoln-Way East Junior Angelo Wilder, an Air Force Junior ROTC cadet, has completed the private pilot license training course at Kansas State University earning his private pilot license. Wilder is one of 120 AF- JROTC cadets around the world to receive the Chief of Staff of the Air Force scholarship from Headquarters AFJROTC, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. More than 750 cadets applied for one of the 120 scholarships, valued at approximately $20,000. Graduates of the program who earned their private pilot license do not incur a military commitment to the Air Force or other branch of Arbury Hill students take prizes in coloring contest Submitted by Arbury Hills School service, nor does completing the program guarantee acceptance into one of the military’s commissioning programs. The Flight Academy Scholarship Program is a new Air Force-level initiative. In collaboration with the commercial aviation industry to address the national civilian and military pilot shortage, AFJROTC has been charged by the Air Force Aircrew Crisis Task Force to bring back the “luster of aviation” to high school students and to increase diversity in aviation fields. Photo submitted Students at Arbury Hills School participated in the Will County Fair coloring contest. Entries were completed in May of the 2017- 18 school year due to the July deadline. There were five winners from Arbury Hills School. Isla Nightingale placed second in the first-grade category. In the second-grade category Summer Polansky placed third, Hunter Janes placed second and Nicole Luna won first place. Kaydence Blatt placed third in the third-grade category. These talented students won a ribbon and a prize. The coloring contest was open to all kindergarten through I would in a heartbeat,” said Wilder. His high school AF- JROTC Instructor, Lt. Col. John O’Connor, USAF (retired) stated, “This Flight Academy program is such an amazing opportunity for the cadets, and Angelo showed great determination in completing this intense training program and earning his private pilot license in just seven weeks over the summer. We’re very proud of his accomplishment and hope more of our cadets will have the opportunity to follow in Angelo’s footsteps by taking advantage of this program in the future.” Contingent on funding, this program will grow exponentially in the coming years. If financing continues, scholarships are expected grow to 250 in the summer of 2019 and 500 in the summer of 2020. There are also plans to open the program to fourth-grade students in Will County schools. All entries were on display Army, Navy, and Marine Junior ROTC programs as well as Civil Air Patrol cadets by 2020. The application process for the summer 2019 program will begin in late September or early October. The mission of AFJROTC is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community, while instilling values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and sense of accomplishment. There are more than 120,000 high school students enrolled in AFJROTC at more than 880 high schools in the U.S and overseas.
