I've been the editor
of The Station for a
little more than a year
now, and I'm continuously
impressed and inspired
by the generosity of the
Frankfort community. It's
a village that not only produces
a variety of annual
fundraisers and drives for
great causes — the Midwest
BBQ for the Brave,
Hometown Hoedown and
Sean Duggan Foundation's
"Never Back Down" Toy
Drive are just a few that
come to mind — but also
promotes individual acts of
kindness.
Earlier this summer, we
published a story about
Frankfort native Jessica
Leja and her quest to donate
her unaltered wedding
dress to a cancer patient.
This week, we're running
a follow-up story on Leja
and the bride she chose to
receive the dress: Tennessee
resident Toni Roberts,
who was diagnosed with
breast cancer last year. The
two women recently met
in person for the first time
when Leja drove down to
Tennessee to deliver the
dress.
Leja reached out to us
in June to share her story,
and we were glad to help
her get the word out. But
we couldn't have done it
alone. In addition to being
printed in The Station,
the article ran in our 22nd
Century Media sister
papers The New Lenox
Patriot and The Tinley
Junction, and other area
media outlets such as The
Chicago Tribune ran their
own versions of the story
as well. Because community
members and readers
throughout Chicagoland
shared these stories,
Roberts was able to read
about Leja and the dress
and contact her, despite
living hundreds of miles
away from the southwest
suburbs.
Local journalism can
be a powerful force, but
it's only one part of the
puzzle. While it is the responsibility
of newspapers
to inform the public, the
readers are the ones who
ultimately drive change,
who read an article and say
"I want to help," or "I want
to fix this," and take action
accordingly. Sometimes,
that can take the form of
civic engagement, such as
voting, signing a petition
or writing a letter to a local
representative — and in
this case, it was as simple
as reading and passing
along an article.
Here at The Station, we
are thankful for both our
readers and the movers
and shakers who play such
an important role in this
community, and we look
forward to publishing
many more articles that
showcase the best of what
Frankfort and the folks
who live and have lived
here have to offer.
Letter to the Editor
Animals deserve to be better
cared for
This commentary is directed
to whoever dumped the
sweet, loving orange tabby
cat near 84th Avenue and
North Street on Aug. 25 in
Frankfort. I just wanted you
irresponsible losers to know
that I chose to take him home
with me. He was filthy, had
“And that’s a wrap! Thank you to all who
It was a great way to get information out
long game — i.e., five years
— not a short one — i.e.,
three years. And you have to
accept that you have to rewrite
your ‘Business As Usual’
metric,” Donovan said.
The district just recently
approved to hire PMA Financial
Network from Naperville
to help develop a long-term
never been brushed or cared
for in any way, his ears were
black with dirt and his neck
hair was almost down to the
skin where a too tight collar
was finally removed when
you chose to leave him in the
corn field.
He is now safe at P.A.W.S
Tinley where he will be taken
care of and found a forever
plan regarding the district
long-term debt outstanding.
“However, understand 100
percent of this debt was referendum
debt, approved by
the voters, and carries a separate
unlimited tax levy to pay
these bonds off as they come
due,” Cauffman added.
Cauffman said that the financial
outlook for the next
10 years looks very good for
the district as it continues to
rebuild the fund balance.
home (which was YOUR responsibility
in the first place
if you no longer wanted him).
What goes around comes
around and because I believe
in karma your misdeeds will
come back to you in full
force.
resident
“The FY2019 budget is
one more step on the path to
recovery by having at least
a 3 percent operating budget
surplus as per Board of Education
policy 4:20,” Cauffman
said.
The Illinois School Board
of Education refused to comment
on the Lincoln-Way
school district budget, or
speak generally on the subject.
