Welcome Message from the Artistic Director
I am pleased to welcome you to tonight’s performance
of Coppélia: A Comedy with Love, which is part of our 31st
season tour.
Coppélia is unique; it is the only major classical ballet to
have survived as a comedy. This is because, I believe, it
also holds great dramatic potential. Drawing from the
Pygmalion tale, Dr. Coppélius always struck me as an
ambivalent and misunderstood figure living in a world
shaped by his own creativity, but at some distance from
his fellow men. His obsession with literally creating a
perfect creature of his own making may be doomed
to failure but it doesn’t stop him from baring his soul
and forever altering the object of his love...this is a love
comedy so sit back relax and have fun.
