Message from the Artistic Director
Message from the Chair of the Board of Directors
The 2017-2018 season was a tremendous step forward for Canada’s
Ballet Jörgen with exceptional artistic development. The 30th
Anniversary season saw the return of the company’s completely
original full-length ballet, Anastasia. Created in 2007 for the company’s
20th Anniversary, Anastasia was substantially re-worked with updated
choreography for the 30th Anniversary National Tour. The tour reached
every single province in Canada and the ballet was filmed for worldwide
release, an exciting step in our evolving digital presence.
Development of our dancers is a hallmark of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen,
and the 2017-2018 season saw some tremendous performances from
all of our artists. Several of our future stars made significant debuts as
principal dancers, and retiring artists, Taylor Gill and Gustavo Hernandez,
bid farewell with unforgettable performances. We are blessed to have
a unique group of artists who are committed to the vision of CBJ and
who make it possible for us to bring performances, education and outreach
programming into communities across Canada.
As I look to the future, I want to recognize the exemplary commitment
to the artform and to Canada’s Ballet Jörgen that our artists and staff
embody at every level of their work with our organization. This commitment
is what makes it possible for us to deliver arts programming to
more communities in Canada than any other organization.
Due to the ever-rising costs of reaching under-served communities
across Canada coupled with growing uncertainty around public funding,
it has become more important than ever for the Company to explore
new ways to introduce classical ballet to new audiences. Support from
individuals and organizations that believe in our mission has become
more vital than ever, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all
of our funders with special recognition to our growing audiences
and donor base for helping us stake out a new path towards greater
self-sufficiency as we expand programming to more Canadians.
In addition to an exceptional artistic season, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen
made great strides in its financial operations. After an operating loss in
the 2016-2017 season, resulting from expanded programming across
Newfoundland & Labrador and into other underserved areas, the
company was able to bring its operating budget into balance. Growing
audiences and private support were an important factor in eliminating
the deficit amid increased public funding challenges. I want to thank
my fellow board members, volunteers, staff and artists for their extraordinary
commitment during the past season that allowed us to continue
to expand our programming in a very difficult operating environment.
Education is at the core of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s mandate. As we
celebrated an exceptionally successful 30 years, we also celebrated an
incredible 25-year relationship with our core partner, George Brown
College. Together, we have helped thousands of young Canadians
access high-quality dance training and discover a new world through
dance. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to training for the
creative industries and most specially for the performing arts and dance.
Our 30th anniversary season was one of artistic success and organizational
resilience. It has laid the foundation for exciting new initiatives
that will help us reach new audiences and ensure classical ballet in
Canada thrives for years to come. Stay tuned!
This past season we celebrated our unique
partnership with one of Canada’s largest and
most innovative post-secondary institutions,
George Brown College, with over 33,000
full and part-time students and over 68,000
continuing education registrations. Since
1992 we have worked together to develop
a critical training ground for the dance
community. Each year, this partnership
graduates some 50 dance artists who can
be found in every part of Canada’s diverse
dance milieu, internationally and including
several who are now members of Canada’s
