Third annual Hero Hustle draws the best from Glenview
Sarah Haider
Freelance Reporter
Hundreds of runners
raced for a cause at the
third annual Hero Hustle
on Sept. 9 at Hoffman
School.
Glenview Rotary Club
Sunrise, Glenview Firehouse
4186 and the Glenview
Police Department
joined forces for the third
year in a row to celebrate
the community’s heroes
and raise money for
charities in Glenview and
across the area.
The morning began
with music by the Glenview
Concert Band and
Glenbrook South Marching
Band Drumline. Hundreds
of runners prepared
for the Fun Run, as well
as the Chicago Area Runners
Association-certified
5K and 10K, with a group
warmup led by Sara Mc-
Spedon of Orange Theory
Fitness in Glenview. Before
racers lined up below
the inflatable arch at the
starting line, Glenview
firefighters performed a
flag ceremony and observed
a moment of silence
honoring those who
lost their lives on Sept. 11,
2001.
“First-responders are
so important to the community,
and that includes
police and firefighters,”
said Mary Bak, a Rotarian
and the race chairperson.
“Teachers, ministers, social
workers, parents and
grandparents are all heroes
in our in our world.
Firefighters and police are
the public face of that, so
it make sense to support
them.”
The early morning race
followed the Firefighter’s
Pig Roast and Wing Dinner
the previous night
at Harley Davidson in
Glenbrook South musicians (left to right) Mary Isaac,
drums.
Glenview. Due to the
event’s growth, the dinner
was moved to the store’s
large showroom this year
to accommodate the 350
guests. Raising more
than $13,000, the night
featured food donated
from Pizano’s and Harrison’s
Poultry Farm, beer
provided by Ten Ninety
Brewing Company, and
bingo ran by Youth Services
of Glenview/Northbrook.
“It is great to have nice
events like this is in the
community that we can be
involved in just to be out
with everyone and get to
meet and talk with people
in the community,” Lieutenant
Gary Schumacher
said. “It’s fun to bring everyone
together.”
Proceeds from the twoday
charity weekend were
split between the services
supported by the rotary
club and the firehouse.
More than 22 chosen
charities will benefit, including
Boy Scout Troop
55, Camp I Am Me, GBS
Booster Club, Northfield
Township Food Pantry and
Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook,
as well
as Glenview’s farmers
market, history center and
public library.
“Throughout the year,
we have a variety of service
projects at the rotary
club with various ways to
get involved, but this is a
way of letting the community
get involved with what
we do and have a good
time,” Bak said. “They can
get to know who [the rotary
club is], they know what
we do, they know that this
is a charity event that gives
Everything goes back
to the community, and it’s
combination.”
January. Both the Rotarians
and Glenview firefighters
dedicated months
of planning to secure
sponsors and organize the
event; but, for Bak, seeing
the community rally
behind those who serve it
daily was a worthy hustle.
“It’s a fun opportunity,
and it all goes back to the
community,” Bak said.
“It’s fun to run with your
friends and neighbors. It’s
just a good day.”
