Loyola routed by Brother Rice, sitting in new seat
Loyola Academy’s
sophomore team surmounted
a three touchdown
first half deficit and
won on a field goal on the
last play of the game.
That was the highlight
of the Ramblers’ trip to
Brother Rice on Sept. 15.
Saying that the varsity
was unable to come up
with an encore is an understatement.
“It’s been over a decade
since we lost like this,”
Loyola head oach John
Holecek lamented after
the Ramblers were routed
35-3. “It was such a debacle—offensively
and
defensively—that I can’t
put my finger on anything.
“Obviously, they’re a
good team and they’re
rolling. They executed
in every aspect and we
didn’t. They have some
good weapons. We had to
play catch up and that’s
not our forte.”
Top Performers
1. John Bean, QB — 248 passing yards, 1 passing TD, 53
rushing yards, 1 rushing TD
2. Brother Rice defense — four interceptions
3. Nate Van Zelst, kicker — 38-yard field goal
The Ramblers trailed
7-0 at the end of the first
quarter and 14-0 when the
second quarter was in its
infancy before Nate Van
Zelst’s 38-yard field goal
put them on the scoreboard
midway through the
quarter.
Brother Rice answered
immediately with a 74-
yard touchdown drive and
maintained its momentum
by scoring again in the
third and fourth quarters.
The loss in their Catholic
League Blue Division
opener was the second
straight for the Ramblers
(2-2). They were defeated
at home 17-12 the previous
week by Mount Carmel,
a game in which they
were stopped on the goal
line on the last play.
Undefeated Brother
Rice (4-0) was led on offense
by quarterback John
Bean, who completed
14 of 20 passes for 248
yards and ran 12 times
for 46 yards and another
touchdown, and by running
back Jessi Plunkett,
who rushed for two touchdowns.
back Danny Fitzgerald,
who returned a fumble
recovery 55 yards for a
touchdown and accounted
for two of their four interceptions.
Ironically, the Ramblers
made a good first impression.
Michael Gavric
fielded the opening kickoff
with a fair catch at his
own 29-yard line and the
passing of Matthew Schiltz
and running of Trevor
