Creating Space at the
Table: Gender Inclusion
101
Gender development and
identity is not often talked
about in faith communities.
However, with gender
impacting everyone and 41
percent of gender diverse
individuals reporting attempting
suicide, there is a
growing need for all people
to learn to love these individuals
and create gender
inclusive spaces. at 7 p.m.
on Sept. 24 in the Culbertson
Room, the church will
be led by the Ann & Robert
Lurie Children’s Hospital in
a session that provides attendees
with the opportunity
to understand how to support
transgender and gender
expansive people in church.
All will review key terms,
recognize the positive impact
that their support can
have, and receive an overview
of best practices. This
session is jointly sponsored
by A Joyful Noise Preschool
and Adult Education at Kenilworth
Union. For additional
In Memoriam
Gerry Hedlund
Gerry Hedlund, 74, of
Wilmette, died on Aug.
18 after a commendable
six-year fight against leukemia.
He was a loving
father to Jeff and Laurie
(Peter Obara), proud
grandpa to Jake, devoted
brother to Ron (Cathy),
dear uncle to Chris, Brian
and Kelly (Max Kanter)
and loyal friend to many.
Born in Chicago to Gunnar
and Doris Hedlund,
he graduated from Northwestern
University, raised
his family in Glenview
and later moved to Wilmette.
He spent his youth
traveling the country and
racing powerboats with
many who would become
lifelong friends. That
passion was channeled
into a career as he and
his brother designed and
built their own boats. The
brothers, together with
their parents, then opened
Hedlund Marine Sports,
which served the boating
and sailing needs of
the North Shore for close
to 50 years. Family and
friends celebrated his life
on Sept. 9.
Mark Arthur Scarborough
Mark Arthur
Scarborough,
suddenly on
Sept. 1. A
resident of
Kenilworth, Scarborough
Scarborough
was originally from
Elkton, MD. He was born
on Dec. 17, 1967 to Joseph
Henry and the late
Carol Vivian Lilley Scarborough.
Surviving in addition
to his devoted and loving
wife of 17 years, Lara
Nelle Bixler Scarborough
and their children he was
so proud of, Jack, Eva and
Robbie, are his sisters,
brothers, nieces and nephews
whom he all loved
so dearly; brother Robert
Scarborough and wife
Cindy with their children
Mathias and Olivia; sister
Diane Forrest and husband
Dean and their children
Vivian, Nolan and
Emily; sister Sharon Williams
and husband George
and their children Katie,
Sarah, Eric and Scott; and
brother Matthew Scarborough
and wife Melissa
and their daughter Courtney.
Professionally Scarborough
was a senior leader
for Discover Financial
Services for over the last
19 years. He held numerous
senior level roles at
Discover: heading Cardmember
Acquisition,
Marketing, Customer
Service and Cardmember
Assistance and Recovery
to name a few. Scarborough’s
impact on the
company, employees and
business partners he encountered
was unique,
filled with intellectual
curiosity and doing the
right thing for customers
and employees, and created
a culture in and around
Discover that was always
fun to be a part of.
Scarborough was a
man who never held back
whether it was expressing
his fierce love for his family
and friends, traveling,
welcoming a challenge or
debate, or speeding down
hill on a mountain bike
or skis (he took pleasure
in encouraging others to
embrace his “no brakes”
style!). He had a passion
for music, restoring old
cars, riding motorcycles,
reading and debating history.
Scarborough was a generous,
caring and intensely
loyal husband, father
and friend. He was known
by his family, friends,
and colleagues for his unmatched
energy, passion,
commitment, and spirit.
Those who knew him appreciated
his strong and
direct opinions, wry humor,
adventurous and funloving
spirit, off the chart
intellectual thoughts and,
most of all, his love for
life! He advised so many
of us and we will always
carry him with us.
