Offense carries New Trier to win
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
It’s important for a team
to finish the nonconference
portion of its schedule on
a high note, something that
helps give it confidence
going into conference play.
Coming off of a win
against Fremd on Sept. 7,
New Trier was looking to
do just that and win its second
straight against a Mid-
Suburban League squad.
The Trevians walked out
of its Friday, Sept. 14, road
game against Palatine with
a 37-25 win.
“This is the first time
we’ve finished nonconference
play 3-1, because we
were always 2-2,” New
Trier coach Brian Doll
said. “Once the MSL deal
started, we’d never been
better than 2-2 so this is a
big deal for us to get out
of this. We’ve won three
games against MSL teams
in a row and we feel like
we’re starting to compete,
starting to get better.”
What ended up being
somewhat of a shootout
didn’t always look
that way. In a first half
that included five punts,
New Trier’s Jonathan Taylor runs in for a touchdown against Palatine Friday, Sept.
14, in Palatine. Scott Margolin/22nd Century Media
more points were scored
off of field goals (nine)
than touchdowns (seven).
Luckily for the Trevians,
they did most of the scoring,
with a 13-yard touchdown
run by Jonathan
Taylor and two field goals,
of 42 and 40 yards, from
Graham Dable to take a
13-3 lead to the half.
“Those are the longest
field goals I’ve ever had
in a game,” Dable said.
“When I’m going up there,
I’m just thinking to have
a clean, fluid motion and
trying not to kill the ball.
Every kick should be the
same kick.”
The second half was an
entirely different story,
however, as both team’s
offenses came to life. The
Trevians scored on all four
of their possessions, including
the opening drive,
which was highlighted by
a 51-yard run by quarterback
Carson Ochsenhirt
(161 yards rushing on 24
carries), who also punched
the ball in from eight yards
to extend the Trevians lead
to 20-3.
On the next possession,
after a 20-yard run, Taylor
went down with an
injury that would cause
him to miss the rest of
the game. Already down
to their fourth running
back because of injuries,
the Trevians got an unexpected
boost from one of
Top Performers
1. Thomas Criswell, RB – 48 rushing yards on 13 carries, 2
touchdowns.
2. Carson Ochsenhirt, QB – 161 rushing yards on 24
3. Graham Dable – The kicker converted 42-, 40- and 35-
yard field goals.
the players that normally
wouldn’t see much playing
time: junior Thomas
Criswell. Criswell would
finish with 48 yards and
two touchdowns rushing
on 13 carries.
“We’ve got a lot of kids
working hard,” Doll said.
“Criswell had been our
scout team running back
all the time and just runs
hard. We were like ‘let’s
go. Next guy up.’
“He knows the plays,
he knows what we do. We
kept it simple, we kept
it basic and he did what
he needed to do to get us
downfield.”
Dable added another
field goal, a 35-yarder in
the second half as well.
Both he and Doll said the
team talked about what
they had to do in the second
half to secure the win
at halftime.
“Our coaches were just
trying to fire us up, get us
focused,” able said. “We
were able to do so well
because everyone started
to do their job even better.”
“They (Palatine) gave
us some different looks
than we were planning
on, based on scouting reports
and were we able to
make adjustments from
those looks,” Doll said.
“They gave us those same
looks in the second half, so
we were able to see some
things we were able to take
advantage of up front and
we let Ox read some of the
plays in the second half,
where in the first half we
weren’t reading as much.”
The Trevians head to
Skokie Friday, Sept. 21,
to face Niles West and
start CSL South play. The
Wolves are 0-4 this season
and have given up at least
47 points in three of their
four losses.
