Surgical hand disinfection
Standard rubbing method for surgical hand disinfection
according to EN 12791
Surgical hand disinfection is carried out with clean and dry hands. With visually clean hands,
according to RKI, no additional hand washing is necessary.
Step 1
Put a suitable hand disinfectant in dry, cupped hands.
Press the dispenser system with the elbow
(with no palm contact).
Step 2
Rub hands and forearms down to elbows for the entire
duration of the reaction time* with the disinfectant.
Important
To exclude
bacterial contamination,
hand
washing should be
carried out with a mild
soap preparation before
work starts, at the
latest before the first
surgical hand disinfection
of the day.
The hands and forearms
should be wetted
with the disinfectant*
during the entire reaction
time.

Step 3
Disinfect the hands according to the standard rubbing
method for hygienic hand disinfection according
to EN 1500.
Step 4
The hands should be kept above elbow level during
and after the entire disinfection process to avoid
re-contamination. Only after drying the hands may
surgical gloves be put on.
The reaction time
depends on the
preparation used. The

Hand disinfectant
is proven to have
an effectiveness of
3 or 5 minutes with
regard to surgical
hand disinfection. The
information on the
disinfectant used must
be observed.
