Deputy Mayor Christopher Gordon had voted not to change the zoning and confessed he made a mistake. “I really feel I voted the wrong way,” he said. “But we councillors can only deal with what is in front of us at the time and I did not want to see a zoning where developers can take advantage of it.” Councillor Penny Pedersen also made a confession. “I too feel the same,” she said. “I’ve since received letters from the church and once I understood the focus of their proposal I felt I made the wrong decision.” Councillor Jordan Lane did not change his vote but appealed to the church for understanding. “I said the reason I spoke in opposition to it was one of principle,” he said. “I now think the intent behind it was very noble but I don’t think we should make changes with a development freeze on. “I hope you will understand my position.” The council will now notify the NSW Department of Planning and Environment of the new decision. The church will keep and rent one building on the site. Anthony Roberts welcomes new surge in seniors cards THE Seniors Card program has been an outstanding success with the number of card holders and participating businesses significantly increased since the program was introduced in 2015. Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts said the number of business partners has now increased by more than 1,600 to more than 5,700, with more than 250,000 new members. “It’s so important that we continue to do everything we can to put downward pressure on the cost of living, and the Seniors Card program has enabled older people in our community to do more for less,” Mr Roberts said. “Everyday living discounts range from energy and phone bills, education courses, travel insurance, accommodation, and through to your local caf,, gym, hairdresser, or mechanic.” “Seniors are already enjoying savings from big brands like Woolworths, AGL and Telstra, but I am calling on local retailers throughout Lane Cove to get on board.” The Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said the concerted effort over recent years to grow the NSW Seniors Card has brought unprecedented discounts to the State’s ageing population and helped businesses grow their customer base. “Business owners are catching on and realising the benefits of offering a NSW Seniors Card discount are two-fold, enticing new loyal customers and giving back to their communities,” Mrs Davies said. Mr Roberts agreed. “At a time when the cost of living is rising and much of our ageing population is living on a fixed income, we need to find innovative ways to help seniors make every dollar count,” he said. “Businesses who sign up by November 9 this year will have the chance to win a $10,000 NSW Seniors Card advertising package, and members who nominate a business to join will go into a draw to win one of three $500 Visa gift cards.” “A recent survey of 35,000 Seniors Card members revealed NSW seniors are more likely to try a new business if it offers a Seniors Card discount and almost 70 per cent of seniors would return to a business if they offered a Seniors Card discount.” For more information or to nominate, visit the website: www.seniorscard. nsw.gov.au Birdlife in Springtime MEET the birdlife of the Field of Mars Reserve on Saturday October 6 on walks guided by Cathy Goswell of the Cumberland Bird Observers Club and hosted by the Ryde-Hunters Hill Flora & Fauna Preservation Society. The event is being hosted by the City of Ryde and is open to young and old riders. “Come along to one or both of our Essential Skills courses,” the City of Ryde team said. “In the morning we’re holding an essential skills and commuting course for people who want to increase their confidence and start riding more often. “In the afternoon you can learn the essentials of bike maintenance, so you’ll be prepared for whatever happens.” Participants are welcome to attend for both workshops but bookings ase essential and can be made by phoning 9952 8222. Boarding the tram the conductor handed each member an original two penny tram ticket before embarking on a tram ride to the National Park. The group spent an hour inspecting the old trams in the Museum building including a very spooky prison tram without windows, only vents near the wooden roof, and inside steel barred sliding doors closed over cubicles that had held the prisoners. They had a great time inspecting this unique attraction in the Sutherland Shire for over 50 years. Ryde Probus are a combined club and welcome applications from couples, single men and ladies. On March 19, 2019 the Club will celebrate 40 years in Probus. The Club organises regular outings, barbecues, coffee mornings, Christmas in July lunch and December Christmas luncheon at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club along with other excursions out for lunch to places like Doyles on the Beach plus Carmens at Canada Bay. Meetings are held at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club on the fourth Tuesday each month commencing at 10.15am and concluding shortly after 12 noon.
