Dear Residents
Since the start of spring, and as we move
closer to summer, it is clear to see that
the nature around us are just as excited
about the warmer weather. Birds are
more prominent in our eco areas and with
the arrival of new game to the Nature
Reserve, we all have even more reason
to visit this lovely piece of heaven in our
midst, more frequently. We’ve noticed
that the lovely weather has also inspired
many of you to become more active. It
is an excellent time of the year to return
to any of your New Year goals and get
busy.
May each and all of you enjoy a great
spring, and even greater start to summer.
Just a reminder to keep to the speed limit
30 km/h within the gates of the Estate.
Please ensure that all dogs are on a leash
when they leave your premises and that
they are under someone’s direct control
at all times, especially entering the Eco
area. We often end up with pets roaming
the Estate freely and often, they are
brought to the security office at the gates
for safe keeping.
The security personnel and HOA staff
do not have the facilities to keep and
care for these animals while their
owners are located. It is a requirement
per the Estate rules that pets are tagged
with some form of identification or
contact details so that we know who to
contact when your four legged friend
is found.
Our animal guardian angel, Barbara
Galanos at the HOA office, offered
her assistance and requested that all
pet owners send her a picture of their
pet/s with their contact details to help
her compile a Pet Owners database.

The Hills has a large variety of birds in the Estate.
Many species has been identified so far in the
Estate with the help of Birdlife Northern Gauteng.
The Owls in the Estate are mainly two species: the African
Grass Owl Tyto Capensis and the Spotted Eagle Owl
Bubo Africanis.
The Grass Owls occur on the open
grassland areas near the water streams.
These owls can be spotted in the evenings
or late afternoon when they are hunting
for rodents in the grass. The grass owl
nests on the ground among the long bush

walkways in the Eco area to encourage nesting of the
Spotted Eagle Owls.

While stencils
are by no
means a new
form of décor, it has
recently spread from
the walls onto floors,
furniture and various
other textiles. Stencil
painting is an extremely
cost-effect and versatile
DIY technique suitable
for paintable surfaces
inside and even outside.
If you can imagine it, it
can probably be done.
Here’s what others are doing:
Floors
Cement, wooden, vinyl, laminated or tiled
floors are given a dramatic new look with
stencil patterns. Cover the entire surface to
create a tile or wooden effect or add a stencil
design on a specific area to create a rug-like
appearance. Stencil patterns here and there
create instant warmth and character in large
open spaces. Transform stairs and/ or risers
with this technique.
Settle on one colour to create a two-tone
appearance or attempt multiple colours for
maximum drama. Don’t stop inside the
home either. Patios, driveways, paved areas
etc. could all benefit from stencils.
Furniture

As women, our breasts are
an integral part of who
we are. As each of us are
unique, so are they, coming
in different shapes and
sizes, but subjected to the
same challenges.
Breast development can begin from as young as 8 years
of age, as a girl approaches puberty due and starts to
produce Estrogen.
When menstruation begins, breast starts maturing in
the formation of secretory glands for the milk ducts.
There are normal changes that a breast can be subjected
too, and this is important to know, as not to confuse
it for abnormalities. During menstruation, swelling,
pain and tenderness are to be expected and routine
breast examinations should be postponed until a week
after.
Examination of the breasts is best done in the bath or
shower, because of the smooth surface of the overlying
skin. Placing the one hand behind your head and
palpating with the other is an ideal way of examination.
Doing this regularly, e.g. every 3 months creates
a general “feel” of your breast.
Overall tenderness of the breast, other than hormonal,
can be caused by oral hormones. Due to the anatomy
of the breast, it can also be the cause of underlying inflammation
of the muscles and chest wall.
Breast lumps can be caused by infections, injuries,
non-cancerous growths such as cysts, abscesses, fibroadenomas,
fibrocystic breasts, intraductal papilloma
(milk duct growth), trauma or cancer. These lumps
usually have smooth edges are not attached to the skin
or underlying tissue. Sometimes they are palpable in
both breasts.
Fibrocystic breasts have lumps in both breasts that
increases in size and tenderness just before the menstrual
period. This might be associated with nipple
discharge. Other causes of nipple discharge could be
caused by an increase hormone called Prolactin, which
is usually secreted during breastfeeding called galactorrhea.
This can be caused by certain medications,
herbs and hypothyroidism. Any bloody nipple discharge
is not normal but might be caused by benign
intraductal papillomas, which could become inflamed
resulting in a sticky texture. Please consult a medical
doctor if this happens.
Mammary duct ectasia typically presents in women
nearing menopause, because of inflammation and possible
blockage of ducts located underneath the nipple.
This usually presents as a greenish discharge. Infection
of the breast will present as a pussy discharge from the
nipple known as mastitis or an abscess. The breast will
usually be painful, inflamed and warm to the touch.
Cancer in the duct may also present with a nipple discharge.
A rare form of breast cancer is
Paget’s disease, which causes the nipple and surrounding
areola to bleed or ooze.
Simple cysts in the breasts are filled with fluid, it usually
happens in both breasts and can be aspirated under
ultrasound guidance.
Fibroadenomas are the most common benign lumps
and usually occurs in women aged between w 20-30
years. These might resolve spontaneously or sometimes
needs to be removed surgically.
It is therefore crucial to look after yourself and have
your yearly gynaecological examinations, which includes
the breast examination.

will assist you and your architect
to design your dream house in
such a way that it will add value
to your investment.

This is specifically relevant to designing a house
within the Estate, as the vision of the Estate has
always been to create beauty in the collective
aesthetic of individual homes and the harmony
between buildings.

Put on your favourite pair of pants, sharpest
shirt, and coolest jacket without regard for their
coordination. Then walk down the street and try not
to get laughed at. Build a car out of the most
beautiful features of the most stunning cars
ever made. See if your friends will be seen with you
in it.
Create a dream lover out of body parts from your
favourite Hollywood hotties. See if you are turned on
by the sum of the parts as you were by the
previous wholes.
It is the dialogue of the pieces, not the pieces
themselves that create aesthetic success.
3 Overdesign
At the outset of your design, make your spaces
about 10 % larger than they need to be. During the
design process, additional special requirements will
arise for mechanical rooms, structural columns,
storage, circulation space, wall thickness and a
hundred other things not anticipated when the
building programme was created.

The point of overdesigning is not to design a larger building than is necessary
but to design one that is ultimately the right size. In the unlikely event the
extra space turns out to be unnecessary, you will find it easier to shrink an
overly large building than to create more space where it doesn’t already exist.

Creating brighter, airier living

exactly the opposite. Bright, airy and
cool are the three things that will
help make the indoors more bearable
during the long summer season that
awaits.

Here are some clever tips to
brighten-up your home:
Let the light in – Brighter rooms are created
through natural light, so where possible, let more
light in. Replace heavy, dark curtains with lighter,
thinner options, even dummy blinds could work.
If it is possible to add glass panes in heavy wooden
doors, this will also help brighten up your space.
IDEA: Extend your curtains rods 12 - 18 cm
above and 25 - 30 cm past the window frame so
that curtains don’t obscure any of the natural light
streaming in. This will also make the windows
appear bigger.
Add shine – Shiny objects reflect light, which
means it could double the effect of your available
light. Glass, mirrors and metal vases for e.g. will
make a dramatic impact as light is bounced back
and forth.
IDEA: Create a bright feature wall by hanging
multiple medium-sized mirrors that are diverse in
style.
Simulate natural light – It isn’t always possible to
utilise natural light in some corners or passages
in a house. Simulate natural light in these areas
by using light sources. The higher a ceiling light is
placed, the more natural it will appear.
IDEA: Brighten up dark corners with a small
table lamp with a white lamp shade and keep it lit
during the day.
Choose brighter, lighter colours – White walls
and ceilings will create a sense of brightness, but
the same is true of light pastels or brighter colours
such as yellow, bright green, bright blue etc. The
use of indoor plants will instantly cool down any
room.
IDEA: Balance out the dark appearance of a
brown leather couch with the use of a lighter/
brighter carpet and scatter cushions as well as a
white/bright wall as its backdrop.
Less is more – Cluttered spaces will prevent air
from passing through freely. In summer less is
more. Remove or reshuffle unnecessary decor
items such as carpets, book shelves etc.
IDEA: Transform big, bulky furniture by
painting/upholstering them in a lighter shade.
