Pumpkin season
Halloweenisnearlyuponus, follow ourstep-by-step
guidetostaying safe whilst pumpkincarving!
Workstation
Make sure you set up in an area that is well
lit and ensure that the surface is dry tostop
any pumpkins slipping or sliding. Ensure that
all ofyour tools are dry, including: carving
tools, knife,cutting surface,and your hands.
Have astorage jar on hand to store any
sharp tools (kitchen knife, pin) when they are
not being used. Keeping your workstation
dry will ensure you have afun experience
without any slips of the hand!
Sharperisnot better
Encourage your child to draw out their
design using achunky felt tip pen,
then you can use apin to poke small
holes in the design where you plan to
cut. Use your cutting tool to slowly cut
along the edges of your marked design;
asharper knife isnot always best here
as it can become wedged in the thicker
parts of the pumpkin. Aslightly blunter
knife will help to avoid any injuries
and keep the whole family safer.
Leavethe
carvingtothe
adults
To begin, use acarving tool to cut a
hole in the top of your pumpkin to
create the lid of your lantern. It is
really important that an adult always
carries out the carving itself.Whilst
it is tempting for children, they
are best leaving their skills for the
pumpkin design and scooping the
seeds out with aspoon.
Light it Up!
Once your pumpkin design is cut
out then you can show itoff by
shining alight inside.Traditionally
candles are used but to avoid any
burnt finger tips, battery-powered
tea lights or strings of fairy lights
are equally effective in attracting
trick-or-treaters!
Pumpkin Seeds
After pumpkin carving youwill have plenty of
leftover seeds and we have the ideal wayto
make sure thattheydon’t go to waste. Simply
turn them into adelicious snack by giving
them aroast–they’re also ideal foradding to
salads and sprinkling on soups! Youwill never
discardyour pumpkin seeds again.
Method
•Give the seeds agood rinse and pull away
anystrings of flesh
•Scatter them evenlyacross abaking tray and
season with apinch of salt
•Toss in some olive oil until they
are well coated
•Roast at 180°C/350°F/gas 4for approximately
10 minutes, or until theyare lightly
golden brown.
•Allow to cool and store in
an air tightcontainer
And there you have it, ourguide to staying
safe whilst pumpkin carving! If youwant to
make your pumpkin stand out even more,
getyour child to decoratewith paint, stickers, and
glitter! Just always remember that any sharp tools
should be used by an adult onlyand should be
stored away when not inuse. It’s all about enjoying
afun familytradition in the safest waypossible.
Toprevision tips to boost
your child’s exam results
Exams seem like a long way
off, but preparing for revision
early could make life easier
for many. The After-School
Learning Centre has top tips
for gaining the best results
from studying:
• Create a daily revision
timetable and stick to it
showing the times you will
study each subject.
• Publicise your revision
timetable so friends and family
can see it to limit outside
distractions and help you stick
to your schedule.
RED HOT REVISION TIP FOR
ACHIVEING TOP GRADES
• Go through many past
exam papers searching for
the questions on topics you
need practice. Then, write
answers using your own
words. You will remember
better following this very
simple step.
• Split revision time up.
Revision is effective when
done in 45 minute chunks,
followed by a 10 minute break.
Use the time to get fresh air or
eat something healthy.
• The mind is alert first thing in
the morning so make the most
of daylight hours.
• Start with the subject you like
least or struggle with while
your brain is at its most alert.
• Limit the use of mobile
phones or give it to parents
for the day and ideally the
computer too
• Line up some daily treats
during the revision to keep
yourself motivated.
• Exercising boosts brain
power, changes mood
and mindset, thanks to the
release of happy hormones -
endorphins. Exercise boosts
circulation, increasing the
supply of oxygen to muscles
and to the brain.
• Call The After-School
Learning Centre on 020 8440
8586 if your child needs help
in English, Maths, Science,
Eleven Plus Preparation, SATs,
GCSEs or A-Levels.

Fortitude
Text © D J Williams 2018
All Pete wanted to do was spend a nice afternoon
in front of the TV watching snooker. He thought
having to go shopping for his mum was spoiling
his plans, but little did he know how much worse things were about
to get! Bumping into a robber and an accidental exchange of notes
leads him and his (not) friend being mistaken for thieves and the
trouble escalates from there into complete mayhem. Everything
they do to clear things up only makes things worse. Worrying for
Pete, but hilarious for us as readers. See how it all pans out in this
breathtaking adventure with non stop action. With large print and
some pictures it is great for newly developing readers.
Super Frozen Magic Forest
S
Matty Long (Hodder Hb, £6.99)
The Ice Queen has frozen the Magic Forest with
a magic spell. Everyone is suffering, will the
super Magic heroes, Blossom, Herbert, Hoofus
and Twinkle be able to reach the Ice Queen
and break the spell, without being frozen to
death? It’s going to be a tough call. This is a
wonderful picture book full of amusing, far
fetched characters. With a few sentences
in large print and each double page depicting a scene from their
journey there’s lots going on and plenty to discover, enjoy and discuss. A joy
for new readers and fun for all abilities.
Tom and Tallulah and the Witches’
Feast
S
Vivian French (Walker, £5.99)
Tallulah has been given one last chance to stay as a
witch’s apprentice, but it means preparing a feast and
to say she isn’t a good cook is putting it mildly. It is
vital she stays on to help her grandmother and stop
her turning into a chicken. Worse still, the feast has to
consist of all the witches’ favourite foods. She enlists
the help of her brother, Tom, to discover what these
are. He isn’t happy snooping and feels he has other
skills that would be of more use, but Tallulah won’t listen to him. With only
3 days to complete the task there are some anxious moments and plenty of
chuckles in this magical story with some really great animal characters.
Night of the Living Ted
Barry Hutchison (Stripes, £5.99)
Build a Bear might not be everyone’s idea of a birthday
present for dad, but Vernon is attracted by the ‘free’
sign. This is only for Hallowe’en bears and, as her father
is an Elvis fan, his step sister, Lisa Marie, makes an
Elvis look alike bear (Bearvis) as well. They should have
remembered the saying ‘you don’t get anything for
nothing’ when their bears come alive and Lisa Marie’s
witch bear magically turns her parents into a frog and
slug. As the pair try to reverse whatever has caused
this, aided by Bearvis, they are attacked by an army of evil vampire,
zombie and alien bears. Is this the end for all humans? This is an exciting story full
of magic and horrific attacks cleverly mixed with plenty of humour to make the horror
BEARable! Very old readers can look out for lots of Elvis references. First in a new
series.
The Whimsical
World of
British
Pantomime
"a childwho hasn't seen apantomime
is apublicdanger!"
GeorgeBernard Shaw
Pantomimes are a
wonderful annual
tradition for many
families in the UK, providing
slapstick comedy and topical
humour to entertain every
age. The performances are
almost always based on
popular children’s stories and
fairy tales, and are held ina
wide variety of venues, from
prestigious theatres to local
town and village halls across
Britain. Pantomimes tend to
be more playful and comical
than regular theatre, and
involve eccentric costumes,
musical numbers, audience
participation, and ahappy
ending in every show.
Although less strictly
followed today, traditionally a
number of the main roles were
gender swapped. The Dame
is an older female character in
pantomime, often the hero’s
mother, who regularly wears
the most bizarre and garish
outfits, and tothis day
is almost always played
by aman. .The gender
swapping between the
principal boy and girl is
followed less frequently
in more recent years,
but traditionallyionally these
would also be
notable features of
the performances. rmances.
One of the most
popular additions to
British pantomime shows are
the celebrity cast members.
They both help to draw in
crowds for the theatres,
and provide audiences with
the opportunity to see their
favourite stars taking part in
over-the-top, farcical comedy
guaranteed to have them
roaring with laughter. The
type of humour we know in
pantomimes today was first
introduced in 1843 when
the Theatres Act was lifted
and allowed all theatres the
use of spoken word intheir
performances. Witty puns,
word play, and audience
participation began to be
introduced by writers at the
time, and these are still some
of the main factors to the
modern British pantomime
providing fun, feel-good
shows for all ages!
Have you ever thought about an independent education for your child,
but have been frightened by the fees? At Bancroft’s in Woodford Green
they are able to help with school fees for bright children whose family
circumstances mean that aBancroft’s education would otherwise be
beyond their reach. Every year, children benefit from Means Tested
Awards which provide significant financial help to less well-off families.
Such awards are given to children joining in Year 3 and Year 7 based on
their performance in the entrance tests, interview and their family’s need.
Bancroft’s also offer Academic and Music Scholarships at 11+ and 16+ to
talented children regardless of their family’s income.
Bancroft’s School, established in 1737, is afully co-educational,
independent day school for children from 7to18. They have afantastic
history of academic success in GCSE and ALevel and pupils of all ages
enjoy varied sporting and co-curricular programmes.
Join them for their autumn Open
Days. You will have the chance
to view the fantastic facilities
and to talk about the financial
De Yin School
“Learn Chinese in a fun way! We offer Mandarin
Chinese classes for children aged 5-11 and
we try to keep the class sizes small. We are a
Chinese school who emphasise the importance
of developing good character. We teach children
to listen, speak and write Chinese. We will also
reveal the benefits of traditional Chinese culture
and virtues. The ability to speak and write Mandarin
Chinese will open up a child’s world. Being
virtuous children will help create a harmonious life
within the family, the work place and society as a
whole.”www.deyinschool.org
