In Memoriam
Jack Buffington
Dr. Jack
Mortimer
Buffington,
94, died on
Oct. 9, at
his home in
Wilmette.
A member
of the
Buffington
“Greatest Generation,”
Jack was born Dec. 5,
1924 in Buhl, Idaho. Later,
his family moved to Glenwood,
Iowa, where he resided
until adulthood.
While in Glenwood,
Buffington began his
school years in a one-room
schoolhouse. At the age of
17, in the wake of Pearl
Harbor, he enlisted in the
Army Air Corps, becoming
a first lieutenant. A bomber
pilot, he commanded the
B-17, and later, the B-29.
Throughout his life, Buffington
valued and reminisced
about his experiences
serving his country.
He experienced the thrill
of a lifetime in 2015 when
he took the Honor Flight to
Washington, D.C. to pay
his respects to those who
served in WWII.
While stationed in Nebraska,
Buffington had
his pre-med training at the
University of Nebraska,
and later at Iowa State
University. Thereafter he
attended the University of
Nebraska medical school.
“Introspection” was an
important value to Buffington
and he felt that “I
have to understand myself
in order to understand others,”
a value which drew
him to psychiatry and
which he sought to inculcate
in his children. A lifelong
learner, he attended
the Chicago Institute for
Psychoanalysis, graduating
from the analytic
program in 1976 and becoming
affiliated with the
Institute as a Research Associate,
Clinical Associate,
and Continuing Education
faculty member. He was
always a valued member
of the analytic community,
and contributed a chapter
titled “Emerging Values
in a University Community”
to the volume Late
Adolescence: Psychoanalytic
Studies. He authored
numerous articles, papers,
and panel presentations
throughout his career.
Buffington served as
Director of Northwestern
University’s Student Mental
Health Service from
1974-1985. From 1970-
1995, he was also involved
at Evanston Hospital’s Department
of Psychiatry in a
variety of capacities.
Buffington leaves behind
his significant companion
in life for the past
10 years, Jean Sampson of
Wilmette and Winnetka.
Buffington’s greatest enjoyment
and fondest life
memories were his children,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
His first wife, Valucha
de Castro, preceded him in
death. Together, they had
three children, Paul (Lori);
Sandra, her two children,
Chalo (Eve) and Analucia;
and Gigi (Steve). Buffington
was also preceded in
death by his second wife,
Babette (Bobbie). She had
three children, whom he
adopted and considered
his own. They are Marilyn
Langworthy (James);
Carol Gerner (Philip),
their sons, Kevin and Brian;
and Margaret (Margie)
Guidarelli (Mark) and their
children, Jack (Brittney)
and their daughter, Emilia;
Jenny Guidarelli Ofman
(Rick) and their daughter,
Charlotte (Charley); Jeff,
Joe; and Joanie Hartmann
(Kevin).
The memorial service
will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 26, at First
Presbyterian Church of
Wilmette, 600 9th St., Wilmette,
(847) 256-3010. A
reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made in
Institute for Psychoanalysis,
