10 Questions
with Charlie Forbes
The senior is a member
of the New Trier crosscountry
team
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a meet?
I try to listen to the same
playlist of songs before
every meet. I change it a
little each season, but it’s
always a mixture of rock,
country, and film scores.
Listening to those songs
definitely gets me in the
right mindset to race.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
I would love to go to
Alaska someday, especially
to one of the massive
national parks they have
there. I think that’s one of
the places that’s been least
touched by humanity, so I
would love to see the rugged
wilderness and wildlife
that lives there.
If you could play any
other sport, what
would it be and why?
I’d want to play golf. I
love playing it during my
free time in the summer. It’s
a great activity that I get to
do with my family because
a lot of them play it regularly.
Unfortunately I’m
not great at it, but I think it
would be a lot of fun to play
more in the future.
When did you start
running and why?
I started running in sixth
grade because I wanted
to run in a road race in
Madison Wisconsin called
Crazylegs. It’s something
that my dad and his family
had done in the past, and
it seemed really cool, especially
finishing in Camp
Randall, the Wisconsin
Badgers’ football stadium.
I had to train for it so I
started running, gradually
fell in love with the sport,
and just kept running.
What’s something on
your bucket list?
I want to run all six
World Marathon Majors.
I’ve never run a marathon
before, but that’s definitely
a goal of mine to do in the
next few years, and I think
it would be a great experience
to run one in six of the
greatest cities in the world
on some fantastic courses.
What’s something that
is a guilty pleasure?
I love to eat El Rey
Lemon Nacho chips. They
are these tortilla chips with
this lemon flavored coating
that is so addictive. It
has the perfect balance of
spicy, sour, and sweet that
makes them irresistible.
If you won the lottery,
what would you do
with the money?
I would definitely save
as much as I needed for
college, and set aside a lot
for retirement. I would then
use some on buying a cool
car, probably the new Tesla
Roadster that’s coming out
in a few years, and then
probably some on season
tickets for the Milwaukee
Brewers and Bucks.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
The best part about being
an athlete at New Trier, and
specifically on the cross
country and track teams is
the amount of people I’ve
gotten to know. I think we
have the largest teams in
2018 Football Standings
Central Suburban League South Division
Maine South 7-1 overall, 4-0 conference
New Trier 6-2, 3-1
the state in those sports,
and so it’s been really easy
to become friends with a
lot of people I otherwise
wouldn’t have. The other
great thing is the coaching
staff, who have helped me
out so much in becoming
a better runner and more
importantly a better person
over the past four years.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier (athletics or
otherwise)?
My favorite moment
was sectionals in crosscountry
last year. We
knew it was going to be a
close battle in terms of if
we were going to make it
to the state meet. Almost
everyone on our team ran
well, and everyone battled
through the finish line and
picked up spots in the last
stretch of the race. Our initial
scoring had the meet
very close, and ultimately
we qualified for the state
meet by one point. It was

an incredible feeling because
everyone had trained
so hard for months to get
to that point, and to see the
work pay off in the form
of qualifying for state was
awesome.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
I’m a massive Green
Bay Packers fan. I’m one
of 360,000 Packer shareholders,
and currently
number 39,850 on the
season ticket waiting list.
Hopefully, I’ll get my tickets
in the next 50 years.
